Chapter 39
Friendly Neighborhood Gullwings
We defeated Bahamut. It wasn't easy, but as Paine said, we didn't have a choice. Yuna fell to her knees as the mighty aeon dissolved into pyreflies. I thought that all the aeons had disappeared four years ago. What were they doing here? And why were they attacking us? I knelt down beside my sister. She looked at Paine.
"Thank you, Paine. You were right. We had to fight it, didn't we?"
I saw a tear roll down her cheek. Rikku walked to the edge and looked down.
"Nothing..."
I looked over.
"This hole was made recently."
"Could only be one thing. The sphere was recorded here, so this had to be Vegnegun." I said.
"How deep do you think it goes?" Rikku asked.
I heard footsteps and turned with my sword drawn.
"What? Where's Vegnegun?"
I lowered my sword as Leblanc came forward.
"Not here."
"It must have fled in terror, knowing I was coming." she said.
"Give me a break..." I said.
"I don't think so." said Rikku.
"I must report to Noojie-woojie at once. Boys, record this. Don't miss a single detail!"
"Yes boss!"
I looked back towards the hole.
"Vegnagun. Was it really here?" Paine asked.
"I doubt anything else could've made that hole."
Yuna looked a little defeated. Before anyone could say anything else, Brother started screamingg.
"YUNA! We are in super doo-doo! Get back to Celsius on the double!"
We ran back and got out of the Bevelle underground. I had a horrible feeling in my heart, and those usually came true.
Yuna's POV
We ran to the bridge and Buddy ran up.
"They're fiends pouring out of the temples!" He said.
My eyes widened.
"Authion!"
"Which ones?" Rikku asked.
Brother pushed her down.
"Only all of them! It's a freakin' state of emergency!" he said.
"Set a course to Besiad! NOW!" Amahy said.
Buddy set a course and all we could do was wait. I sighed. All I wanted was to live life my own way. Now... the eternal calm seemed to be anything but.
"Is it Gullwing time?" Brother asked.
"Not exactly sphere hunter work." said Shinra.
"True. But seeing Yuna out there could calm people down." said Buddy.
Paine looked at me.
'They'll expect her to do the dirty work."
"But Yunie wants to help!" Rikku said.
Of course I did. I didn't want people to suffer, but I also didn't want to be used again. No like when I was a summoner.
"Hey! I got an idea." we looked at Rikku. "We could be your friendly neighborhood Gullwings!"
I arched my brow.
"You mean taking out fiends and charging for it" Buddy asked.
"E mega ed!" Brother said.
Paine looked at me again.
"What do you think?"
"Well why not? If that means we can help out people in trouble why not?"
Rikku started to jump around excitedly. I looked around but Amahy had gone.
Amahy's POV
I jumped off the ship the second we got to Besidad. I ran into the village calling for my son.
"Mommy!"
He ran from Lulu's house and jumped into my arms. I held him tightly and fought back tears.
"I'm okay mommy. Uncle Wakka fought the fiends!"
I ran inside to see Lulu. She was explaining what happened to Yuna.
"They came out of the temple. Luckily no one was hurt. You should be proud of your son, Amahy. He threw rocks at any fiend that came too close to anyone. Wakka and the other fought them off." she said.
I smiled at my son.
"You're just like your father."
"Funny. He looks like Sir Auron, but he behaves and thinks exactly as you did when you were a child." said Lulu.
"Yunie! Amahy! Come quick!"
I set Authion down and ran out with Yuna. Rikku pointed towards the temple where Wakka and Beclem were arguing.
"What's there to decide, Wakka? We can finish off the fiends right here and now."
"Burning down the temple is going too far!" Wakka argued.
My eyes went wide.
"You have another suggestion?"
Wakka didn't answer.
"We have to do something! What if the fiends keep coming? Or maybe you don't mind putting your family in danger?"
I growled and ran forward. I punched Beclem hard when I reached him.
"Why are you still here? Don't you dare say things like that to Wakka! Family is everything to him! You're not in charge here!"
"Yes I am! I might as well be since I'm the only one who knows what they're doing!"
I hit him again.
"All we gotta do is take care of the fiends ya?"
Wakka ran into the temple before anyone could stop him.
"Wakka wait!"
I looked back at Beclem.
"I don't trust you not to do anything stupid."
I dragged him over to a tree and tied him up.
"You stay here."
I ran into the temple with Yuna, Rikku and Paine.
Yuna's POV
I couldn't let them burn down the temple. Not this one! It was the first place I'd met him and I couldn't let that die! We fought through fiends and delved deeper into the temple until we found Wakka.
"Wakka!"
"You okay?" Rikku asked.
Amahy knelt down and looked at him.
"Just a few scratches, eh? Nothing to worry about."
"There's too many! Lets get out while we can. That man was right, we need to use fire." she said.
Amahy immediately said no.
"Whatever's controlling the fiends is coming from down there. Take that bad boy out..."
"And we won't need fire." I finished.
"Fair enough."
Amahy stood up and we started to walk towards the lift.
'Wakka stay here." I said.
"Why?"
Rikku smiled.
"Wouldn't want you to overdue it, 'daddy'."
I smiled and nodded. He didn't like it but we didn't wait. We went down and through the door. The first Aeon I'd ever received was waiting for us.
"Valefor." Amahy whispered.
I nodded and took out my guns.
'Forgive me." I said.
It was even harder this time. Being that it was the first aeon I'd ever had. Amahy must've been able to tell because she kept trying to keep Valefor's attention on her so I wouldn't have to fight it. When it was gone I sighed.
"That was my very first aeon. I grew up here in Besaid. This is where I became a summoner. This is my home."
I looked at my boots.
This is where I first met you.
"I have to protect this place." I said.
We helped Wakka out of the temple where Beclem was waiting. He'd gotten loose from he tree, but he hadn't done anything.
"The job's done." Paine told him.
He looked at Wakka.
"Glad to see you're not hurt... or are you? Aren't you going to be a father soon? What if something had happened to you? What then?"
Rikku ran forward.
"Quiet meanie!" she said.
"It's okay." said Wakka.
We all looked at him.
Amahy's POV
I saw Beclem a little differently. He might've been rude, insufferable and cruel but deep down...
"What can I say? He's got a point."
Yuna looked at him.
"Wakka..."
He sat down.
'If we die trying to save one memory, we risk losing them all."
"But what if it's a really important memory?" Rikku asked.
"Memories are nice but that's all they are. It's an Al Behd saying, ya?"
"Well yeah, but..."
I walked outside and Beclem found me again.
"Believe it or not, I understand you."
I arched my brow.
"Trying so hard to get something back. Wakka filled me in, I'm sorry."
I nodded.
"I understand why burning was the first thing that came to mind. I use fire to burn things that have hurt me too. I hated the temples, but that one... my sister met someone very special there. That temple has to stay. Understand?"
"I think so."
He walked away and Authion came out.
"Are you leaving again?"
I knelt down and hugged him.
"Yeah, but I'll be back. And when I come back, your daddy will be with me."
His eyes went wide and he smiled.
"You find a way?" Wakka asked.
"I think so. There are a few problems to sort out but then it will work. I know it will."
He smiled and Lulu smiled as well.
"He'll be safe here. We'll be waiting, for both of you." she said.
I hugged her tightly and closed my eyes. I kissed my son's forehead and hugged Wakka goodbye as well.
Auron will be with me when I come back for our son. We'll come here together.
