Silver Beast: Doubt

May 25 – Monday

"Hey Kagome! Where's Inuyasha?" Eri asked as they quickly changed into their gym clothes. "He wasn't in Lab this morning."

"I'm not sure. He went to meet up with a friend yesterday and hasn't texted me back." Kagome sighed as she checked her phone's screen for the hundredth time.

"Have you tried calling him?" Abbie asked as she pulled her red curls up into a messy bun.

"Yeah..." Kagome sighed as she closed her gym locker door. "I just hope something bad hasn't happened to him."

"I'm sure he's fine." Yuka reassured her.

"Yeah, he probably did something stupid like over slept his alarm clock or lost his phone while riding his bike." Yuka agreed.

"Or he's finally realized you're a loser and doesn't want to be with you anymore." Sabrina smirked.

"Inuyasha wouldn't be so shallow as to break up with me like this." Kagome challenged. "If he didn't want to be with me anymore he'd say it to my face."

"Keep telling yourself that Washington." Sabrina scoffed as she flipped her hair over her shoulder. "Just do yourself a favor and leave him be. He obviously doesn't want to talk to you anymore. Knowing him, he's probably moved onto a new girl by now and has forgotten all about you."

"Oh, like he did you last fall?" Yuka said, making Kagome's posture stiffen.

"At least I got laid, Yuka! When's the last time you've had a man in your bed?" Sabrina snapped, shutting Yuka's mouth closed. "That's what I thought. Now take this little advice to heart Washington, Inuyasha is a lone wolf meaning you and half the other girls in this school were nothing more than quickies to him. He's a selfish bastard that's only looking out for himself. He does what he pleases and you crying over spilt milk won't bring him back."

"Don't listen to her Kagome." Eri said as Kagome's shoulders slumped in defeat. "She's just jealous that Inuyasha decided to make your relationship last longer than a one night stand."

"Yeah, just give him some time. He'll text you back eventually." Ayumi agreed as they all sent Sabrina death glares.

"Whatever… don't come crying to me later when he breaks your heart." Sabrina scoffed as they all walked out of the locker room.

"Hurry up girls! We haven't got all day!" Mrs. Bryd called as the boys waited patiently on the basketball court.

"Yes, Mrs. Bryd!" the girls called as they ran over to the center court line.

"Alright class, the game we are going to play today is dodgeball!" Mrs. Bryd said, earning hoots and hollers from all around the gym. "I want half the boys on one side of the gym and half on the other. The same goes for you girls! I want both teams equally divided! Let's move it!"

"Come on Kagome! You can be on my team." Koga said as he took her hand in his and pulled her onto the opposite side of the court from her friends.

"Oh… alright?" Kagome shrugged as her friends shook their heads at Koga in amusement.

They all knew of Koga's upset regarding her relationship with Inuyasha. It didn't surprise them that the one time Inuyasha wasn't in school Koga would be all over her. As Mrs. Bryd was explaining the rules Kagome noticed Hojo leaning against the padded wall with a scowl on his face. It was very unlike him making Kagome nervous as to what he was thinking about. She thought it best to find out what was going on so she and the rest of the Society weren't left in the dark.

"You ok?" Kagome asked, causing Hojo to snap out of his dark thoughts.

"Huh? Oh! Yeah, I'm fine." Hojo chuckled nervously as he scratched the back of his neck.

"You sure?" Kagome asked uncertain. "You seemed upset."

"I guess I am a little upset… my dad's workshop got broken into last night." Hojo said, causing Kagome's eyes to widen slightly in surprise. "Whomever it was took all of our welding equipment and broke into the safe we had on the property. All of my dad's savings went into that shop. It will take us a long time to recover the losses."

"That sucks." Kagome sympathized while secretly praising Chief Mattaki for successfully ridding the tiny shack of their Rebel supplies. Speaking of which… "Did you have cameras on the property? Maybe it managed to catch the guy doing it?"

"We do but they stopped working for whatever reason." Hojo pouted with his hands stuffed into his basket ball shorts. "My dad thinks the robbers were professionals since the cops weren't able to find any prints. Not even tire tracks or footprints were left behind for them to trace."

"Maybe your stuff will show up in one of the pawn shops around town?" Kagome suggested just as Mrs. Bryd blew the whistle to begin the game.

"I doubt it." Hojo sighed as he quickly dodged one of the balls flying their way. "Most of my dad's welding stuff is pretty old. It will most likely be scrapped for cash. As for the safe that had our guns and silver in it, they'd be stupid to sell those. It will likely end up on the black market where we will never find it again."

"Keep your chin up Hojo. I'm sure everything will work out in the end." Kagome reassured him as she picked up a ball off the ground.

"Thanks Kagome." Hojo blushed. "You're really cool, you know that?"

"Oh, haha… I don't know about that." Kagome blushed just as a ball came hurtling towards her.

"Kagome watch out!" Koga yelled as he quickly ran in front of her and caught the ball.

"Thanks Koga! I was almost a goner." Kagome sighed in relief as Koga knocked the kid out that had tried to hit her.

"No problem doll face. Somebody's got to keep you safe." Koga smirked as he quickly kissed her on the cheek. "Speaking of which… where the hell is dog shit?"

"I don't know." Kagome said as she tried to rub off his kiss on her shirt.

"You don't know?" Koga frowned before catching another dodgeball.

"He uh… went to see Kikyo yesterday." Kagome said quietly, causing his back to straighten. "I haven't heard from him since."

"Ah, shit… I swear..." Koga growled as he dodged another ball. "If that bastard is cheating on you I'll kill him."

"He wouldn't do that to me." Kagome defended as she tried to hit Eri with her ball. She laughed when it hit Eri in the leg causing her to get out.

"I wouldn't put it past him Kagome." Koga warned her as he dodged another ball. "Since Kikyo left he's slept around a lot."

"So I've been told." Kagome said as she jumped out of the way from an incoming ball.

"Don't worry angel cake. As soon as he leaves you I've got your back." Koga said, making Kagome's temper flare.

"Would everyone quit saying that?! Inuyasha is not going to leave me!" Kagome said before taking a ball to the shoulder. "Ouch!"

"You're out Miss Higurashi!" Mrs. Bryd shouted from the sidelines.

"Yes, ma'am." Kagome sighed as she jogged out of the crossfire.

"You're out too huh?" Yuka smiled as Kagome pouted with her arms over her chest chest.

"Yeah. Took one to the shoulder." Kagome sighed as she rolled said shoulder to ease the sting from the rubber ball.

"I took one to the chest." Yuka blushed.

"Ooo that had to have hurt." Kagome sympathized just as Fred caught a ball for their team.

"You're in Yuka!" Mrs. Bryd said as she motioned for her to rejoin the game.

"Go get em!" Kagome cheered as Yuka re-entered the game.

As she watched the game unfold before she couldn't help but wonder what Inuyasha was doing. All these comments about Inuyasha's lack of faithfulness had her mind racing with doubt. Was it possible that Inuyasha had left her for Kikyo? Did they run away together and leave her behind like Koga and Sabrina had said? If not, then why wasn't he answering her phone? Was he hurt? Had he wrecked his motorcycle? Was he sick? Did werewolves even get sick? All this uneasiness had her anxiety soaring through the roof and her stomach twisting in knots. Unable to hold back anymore she pulled out her cellphone and sent him another text.

Kagome: Inuyasha, I'm really worried. Call me as soon as you can ok?

"Miss Higurashi! Put away your cell phone before I confiscate it." Mrs. Bryd yelled just as Koga caught another dodgeball. "Oh, and you're in!"

"Yes, ma'am." Kagome sighed as she tucked her phone back into her gym shorts and ran onto the basketball court.
