Chapter 60 - Secret Is Out

Azumi and Dabi arrived at the hospital from a cab. It had taken Azumi almost 15 minutes to compose herself enough that Dabi felt comfortable telling her what Keigo had relayed to him. He insisted he was coming with her, so she got one of Keigo's hoodies for Dabi to cover part of his face and a medical mask to cover his scars. Dabi held her hand as she hurried inside from the cab to the information desk, claiming Dabi was one of her sons. She also told them her other son, Keigo aka Hawks, and her daughter should be here. Once she dropped Keigo's hero name, the nurse gave her two visitor badges and offered to escort her to the private waiting room. Soji was in surgery and the family was being asked to wait in a private area.

In the elevator going up, Azumi tried to ask for details, but the nurse wouldn't give them to her. It wasn't until they got to the private room that Azumi finally let go of Dabi's hand, crouching down to throw open her arms as Mila ran from Keigo's arms to her mommy, starting to cry. Dabi walked over to Keigo who looked worn out and covered in dirt. Hawks had wiped Mila's face and arms as much as he could, the small room had one window showing more buildings, a water fountain and a pair of vending machines. The rest of the space had chairs for sitting with a tv mounted up near the ceiling. Now, Keigo looked at Dabi, eyes red from crying or trying not to, and was pulled gently into Dabi's arms.

Keigo squeezed his eyes shut and gripped onto the fabric on Dabi's back as he tried not to break down crying. Azumi moved to a chair with Mila, her hands checking the little girl's cheeks, her face, her arms and legs making sure she was alright. Dabi glanced over when Mila calmed down enough to make a coherent sentence. "I'm sorry, mommy. I tried to heal daddy but it didn't work! I tried again and again. I'm sorry." Azumi tried to hush her, kissing her forehead and holding her close as she took a deep steady breath and activated her quirk. "No my sweet baby. Don't apologize, it's alright. Daddy will be ok, you don't have to be sorry." Mila seemed to calm immediately, and Dabi felt Keigo's body relax as well, his own concern seemed to drift away and it was as if they weren't waiting on a life or death surgery of a loved one.

Keigo mumbled as Dabi steered the tired hero to a pair of chairs so they could sit next to each other. "Mom is using her quirk. It'll wear off in a bit." That amazed Dabi that a single sentence relaxed all three of them, and he wondered how powerful her quirk was. He also hadn't missed Mila's statement, choosing to keep that information to himself for now. Healing quirks were rare after all. Once he sat Keigo down, he carefully removed his glasses and headphones, brushing his fingers through his hair and listened to Keigo chirp sadly as he remained clinging to Dabi. It was as if the older teen was keeping the blonde pro hero grounded so he wouldn't break down. Azumi was now rocking Mila in her arms, content that her daughter wasn't hurt, eyes on Keigo with worry. The room was silent as everyone waited for news from the doctor.

It took three hours before a man in surgical scrubs with a clipboard walked into the room. Keigo looked up, his wings moving as Azumi looked up at him, Mila's head in her lap with Azumi's sweater draped over her so the little girl could sleep. "Mrs. Nakamura?" She nodded and saw Keigo stand, holding Dabi's hand tightly. The surgeon wasn't smiling as he looked at the paperwork he had. "We did our best to stop the internal bleeding and removed the glass from your husband's side. His head suffered quite a blow and needed stitches, but his skull suffered a fracture. We've relieved the pressure, but we won't know if there is any brain damage until he wakes up from the anesthesia. His ribs were also fractured and have been bound, so there will be difficulty breathing. We have him on a ventilator for now, until he wakes up."

Azumi's hands were in fists as her soft voice asked what everyone wanted to know. "Will he live?" The surgeon paused before moving to sit next to her. "In cases like this, the likelihood is about 50/50. The biggest factor will be if he wakes up at all. Most of the healing quirks we have available close up wounds or allow the body to use its own resources to heal faster. In this case, your husband's body has no resources to use, so most healing quirks aren't going to work." Azumi closed her eyes a moment, but opened them when Mila spoke up, sitting up slowly. "What about cell restarection?"

The doctor looked confused before Keigo clarified. "She means cell restoration. We know someone who could do that." The doctor looked thoughtful. "It might help, but I would guess that quirk requires the subject to be awake. Cells function via the brain and if the subject isn't awake, the brain can't tell them to fix themselves. It sounds exactly like a hero from a few years back named Soothe. She had the same quirk and it had that limitation. If you know someone who can do that, it might help, but again. The odds of him waking up are the same as him surviving the trauma to his body." Azumi looked at Mila who seemed determined to do something.

"Could we have some time, doctor? We need to contact the rest of his family and we'd like to see him." The surgeon nodded. "Of course, just let the nurse out here know and she can take you to his room. I will be here for awhile, so if you need anything or have questions, just say so." She nodded as the surgeon left, and Keigo kept a hold of Dabi's hand as Mila spoke up. "I can do it, Mommy. If Daddy wakes up. I can do it." Dabi looked confused and glanced at Keigo. "Do what?" Azumi picked up Mila to sit her in her lap. "Mila's mother was Soothe, and Mila has her quirk. We were trying to keep it quiet for her own safety, and because it wears her out so much." Dabi blinked and spoke aloud. "Jin's eye."

Keigo nodded. "Yeah." Dabi whistled low. "That's a hell of a healing quirk " Azumi nodded as she held Mila. "But after Jin's eye, she collapsed and ran a high fever all night. I'd be scared of what would happen with Soji." Mila put both hands on Azumi's cheeks, and chirped. "I can do it mommy. Let me do it." Keigo spoke up, glad Dabi hadn't let go of his hand. "How about we wait and see if dad wakes up and then decide from there?" Mila nodded, accepting that as she hugged Azumi. The older woman stood with Mila on her hip, and Keigo smiled a bit as Mila's wings wrapped around Azumi. He remembered the many times Azumi carried him and how he did the same thing for her. Dabi shook Keigo's hand a bit. "Hey, don't get lost in your head, pretty bird." He nodded and followed Azumi to go find the nurse so they could see their father.

The Commission had its hands full with the rescue and detainment of all of the villains from the mall incident. Not only that, but All Might had been severely injured by his fight with a villain named All For One. While being treated, Sir Nighteye, his sidekick, assured the Commission that All Might would recover, and recommended a cover up on the fight to prevent people from learning about a villain that could steal and give quirks. The Commission agreed and was in the process of burying that story amidst the Mall rescue and the graduating class doing such a great job under tough conditions.

While going through the many reports and requests for aid and compensation, one of the secretaries saw Hawk's name on a report. She didn't realize he had been assigned to the mall rescue, but the more she read the report, the more she got worried. She made a copy of the report from Best Jeanist, and hurried to the president's office. There was a standing order that anything involving Hawks was to go through her and her alone. The secretary saw her door shut and timidly knocked on it, waiting for a reply.

"Come!" She took a deep breath and then slipped into the President's office. "Ma'am, I was going through the Mall Incident reports and found something on Hawks that I think you should see." She offered the folder to the older woman behind her desk and stood with her hands folded once the folder had been taken. "It seems Hawks was at the rescue operation on orders from the Commission, but he also had an altercation with Hook Shot over a sidekick named Echo. The two worked amazingly well together and Hawks made allegations of abuse from Hook Shot on his sidekicks. Best Jeanist separated the two, and then Hawks found his father and sister in the wreckage. He went to Yukina Mercy Hospital with them and left the rescue operation."

The president read everything over, despite the secretary's explanation. "How is his family?" The secretary checked her phone for the casualty report. "His sister was unharmed, but his father is in critical condition. According to this, he just got out of surgery, but it's unlikely he'll make it if he doesn't wake up." There was silence for a while, and then the president closed the folder. "Send our best healers to Yukina Mercy Hospital. Anything they can do to help in Soji Nakamura's recovery, they are to do it. If he dies, they'll be strongly disciplined. Also, anything they witness or see, I want a report on, especially in regards to the sister. Understood?" The secretary nodded and hurried out to do as she was ordered.

The president sighed and looked at the folder. This would be an excellent opportunity to apologize for everything that went wrong with Keigo Takami and his training. They could try to start the make-up process with his family if they can help his father recover. She just hoped they could get to him in time.

Soji was laying in a bed with a respirator and IV lines in both arms. He was in a private room that had a large bay window that overlooked an interior garden. A row of cushioned chairs was along a wall. Azumi stopped in the doorway for a moment, Mila holding her hand. Once she stepped inside, Keigo and Dabi followed. She pulled a chair over next to the bed and sat down with Mila in her lap. Soji looked pale, half his head was bandaged and probably shaved short. Keigo swallowed as he saw how weak and sick his father looked. He didn't like it, and he didn't like the sight of Azumi holding his hand gently with both of hers.

"He'll make it, Kei. He's one of the strongest men I know, and I doubt fate would be so cruel to take him away from you and Auntie." Dabi tried to reassure his friend, and Keigo nodded as he stared. Mila trilled and made a whistle as she curled up in Azumi's lap. With a sigh, Keigo moved to sit in one of the chairs, resting his head on Dabi's shoulder. He was so worn out and tired. His mind a flurry of rough emotions as he drifted off to sleep.

Azumi looked over at her son, sleeping on Dabi's shoulder and smiled softly. "He really cares about you. You're all he talks about when you're not around. Thank you for being here right now." Dabi felt his face get warm as he gently put an arm around Keigo and steered his head to rest in his lap. The blonde stayed asleep, his wings curled around himself. "I care about him too. It's no problem, Auntie. You guys have been like a family to me. More than my own. I'd do anything for you guys." She smiled and watched Mila hop off her lap and walked over to give Dabi's arm a hug.

A nurse came in and smiled at them as she checked his monitors and vitals. Marking the information, Azumi asked about anything she could do to help. The nurse began showing her how to adjust the bed and where extra blankets were in case he showed signs of getting cold. Azumi tucked the blanket up to his chest and gently traced his face, eyes intent on him as she whispered. "Please love, wake up soon." When she sat, Mila climbed back into her lap and watched her father sleep.

A few hours later, Akina and Jin arrived. He almost had some trouble getting in, but he came with Soji's brother, so they let him in. When Jin and Akina showed up, Azumi gave Akina a tight hug, whispering to him as Jin walked over to Dabi and Keigo, the latter a bit rested from his nap. It was somber in the room as Jin nodded to his friend, a handshake to Dabi before he flopped into a chair. Jin had showered and changed before coming to the hospital, intent on supporting his best friend. He was glad Dabi was here to help as well.

"Hey Keigo. How ith he?" Keigo shook his head and gave Jin a brief hug. "It's 50/50 for him. Chances are better if he wakes up. Mom isn't handling it well." Jin nodded watching Azumi and Akina, Mila wandering over to them and crawling onto Jin's lap. "The rethcue operathon ith done. Not many thurvived, but the oneth that did are mothtly hothpitalithed. Hook Thot told me not to come in until nect week. Not thure why but I think he wath put off by you." Keigo snorted and shook his head. "I don't care. He was being an asshole to you, and that's not right." Dabi nodded in agreement. "It's one of the ideals Stain talks about. How most heroes don't truly care."

Azumi gasped and hit the call button, making all three boys turn to look at her. Soji's face was scrunched up as if in pain, the ventilator was beeping from lack of steady exhale. Mila chirped and hugged Jin tight as a few nurses came in to check his vitals and status. "Call the doctor. His blood pressure is dropping." Azumi stepped back as one of the nurses left to a doctor. The heart monitor began to alert as the nurse tilted the bed down to lay him flat. Soji's bright blue eyes flew open and he seemed to be choking. Mila squirmed out of Jin's grasp and ran to Azumi who picked her up as the nurse told them all they would have to leave the room, a doctor hurrying into the room. "Get me some molmethocaine and let's ready 80 ccs of adrenaline just in case!" Dabi herded Keigo towards the door as Jin and Akina went to help Azumi.

They got to the doorway before Mila got out of Azumi's arms and ran over to the bed. "Mila!" Azumi grabbed for her as the five year old hopped up onto the bed and laid down on top of Soji, her wings spread out across him. "Daddy! Wake up, daddy!" One of the nurses moved to pick her up until the doctor stopped her. "Don't! His vitals are stabilized!" The beeping and frantic alarms calmed as Soji took a few deep breaths looking around as if in a panic. His voice was hoarse as he spoke Mila's name, as if he didn't realize where he was. The doctor checked a few things before waving for the nurse to step away. Mila was passed out laying on top of him, her face flushed as the doctor waved the family back.

As Azumi moved to the side of the bed and Keigo, Dabi and Jin walked back into the room, the doctor turned to look at her as she took Soji's hand, eyes tearing up as she watched him look around disoriented. The doctor did a quick check of Mila who had passed out on the bed clinging to Soji. When he spoke, it was in surprise and everyone realized the secret was out.

"Your daughter has a healing quirk?"
