A/N: Hello everyone! I apologize for the lack of updates recently. These last few weeks have been some of the busiest I've had in awhile so I really didn't have the time. I am going to try to keep updating consistently but if I don't, do not worry; I haven't forgotten about this story.

Chapter Six

(Eric's POV)

For the past three hours the three of us have been sitting around the jeep waiting for the damn radio receiver to charge. Amy sits on the hood of the vehicle messing with the receiver every so often while also warily scanning the tree line. Owen lays across the back seat with his legs hanging out the side. I am currently sitting in the driver's seat trying to come up with something to talk about with Amy. I've tried a few times, but her responses have been short.

Owen sits up and leans in close to whisper to me. "So she's been here for over three years now?"

"Yeah." I whisper back.

"That's a long time for someone to be alone."

Guilt and regret instantly rises up inside me. "Yeah."

"She probably hasn't spoken to anyone in that entire time." Owen tells me. "Anyone living that is. It may…take some time to get a normal conversation out of her…you know."

Owen looks at me for a few more moments before lying back on the back seat.

Amy really has been alone for all this time. Who knows what affect that has had on her? I don't know why but I guess a part of me was hoping that if I found her again, things would be just how we left them. Thinking back on that now, I realize how naïve and selfish that was.

All this time I was thinking about the what-ifs.

All this time Amy's mind has been solely survival.

"We're being watched." Amy tells us quietly and calmly. You'd think she had just told us what the weather was like.

Owen instantly sits up at this. "Come again?"

I begin to look around myself to see if I see anything but I see nothing.

"Are you sure?" I ask her.

Amy gives me a quick glance. "They've been watching for the past hour. Maybe longer."

My stomach sinks. "How do you know?"

"The shadows in the trees…" Amy says. "The ones that don't quite fit or look right. That's them."

I try to focus my eyes on the tree line, trying to see what she's talking about but I can't notice anything.

"I can't see anything." Owen says, his voice nervous.

"Trust me… They're there." Amy responds. "They like to watch."

"What are you going to do?" I ask as I continue to look.

"Nothing." She responds. "Unless they make a move or try to get closer. They usually just watch."

Usually

I focus on one spot a ways in the distance. I see a shadow that doesn't quite look like it belongs and I suddenly feel like throwing up.

"You see it now." Amy says, noticing my reaction.

"I want to get out of here." Owen tells us.

"We will." Amy assures him. "But if we make it obvious, there's a good chance they will react."

"React how?" Owen asks, his eyes darting around.

Amy doesn't respond. Instead, she casually slides off the hood of the jeep. She motions for me to slide over to the passenger seat and I comply.

"There're two new people on the island." Amy tells us. She's talking normally, but I can't help but notice her voice has lowered. "They're…curious."

Amy starts up the vehicle and starts to drive away. "The receiver should be charged enough now. Can you turn it on?" She asks, handing the radio receiver to me.

I take it and begin to fumble with it. Truth be told, I have no idea how to even work one of these. On top of that, I'm definitely still on edge by the fact we were being watched. How Amy is handling it so calmly is a mystery to me.

I shoot a quick glance in her direction and see that she has a white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel.

Maybe she's not as calm about this as I thought.

And for some reason, that puts me more on edge.

Eventually, I hit a button that brings the receiver to life and static begins to crackle through the speaker.

We continue driving until we reach a large clearing. Amy pulls the vehicle to a stop and turns towards me.

"We need to get an idea of which direction the signal is coming from. That way I'm not driving aimlessly."

"…Holy shit…." I hear Owen say from the back seat. I turn in the direction he's looking at and see a couple of brachiosaurus towards the opposite end of the clearing. "They're huge!"

I had forgotten how big they were in the three years I've been gone, and I can't help but stare as well. Amy lets out an annoyed sigh and takes the device from me. She then steps out of the vehicles and begins moving around – changing her direction where she thinks the signal is stronger.

Owen continues staring at the brachiosaurs who are eating leaves off some of the taller trees. "Do you think…the people who built this place ever imagined how large these things actually get?"

"I don't know." I say. "Hard to imagine they didn't."

Owen jumps out of the back seat and begins walking closer. "This is amazing."

I glance back at Amy who's still fiddling with the radio receiver and walking a few feet in different directions.

"It…sounds like it could be coming from the northeast." Amy says, but I can't tell if she's talking to me or herself.

"Guys…" The tone of Owen's voice gets both of our attention and we turn towards him. He's gone white. He then turns and begins sprinting back towards us. "Start the car!"

What? I glance in the distance and then see it. In the distance, several shadowy figures are sprinting straight towards us.

"Amy!" I yell.

"I see them!" She shouts back, running back to the jeep.

Owen dives into the back seat and Amy and I jump into the front. Amy tosses the radio receiver to me and starts the jeep up. To all of our relief, it starts up instantly, and Amy guns it. She drives us back into the trees on a road that looks like it's been neglected longer than the rest of the island.

I glance behind at Owen whose eyes are glued on the road behind us. As we drive I notice the radio signal getting stronger meaning Amy was right about it coming from the northeast and that she's heading right for it.

"Oh shit." Owen mutters. "…That's impossible…"

I turn around in my seat and see them.

The shadowy figures have appeared again.

And they're actually gaining on us.

"Amy, go faster." I tell her, not taking my eyes off of the figures behind us.

"They're following us, aren't they?"

I don't answer, but I feel Amy speed up. For a few moments, it looks like it's working and we're losing them.

But then they're the same distance from us as they were before.

"Faster, Amy!"

Amy speeds up more and now we're going pretty fast. I can tell the old jeep isn't handling the neglected road well and each of the bumps we hit makes me cringe.

Yet the shadowy figures are somehow still pursing us.

"Have they always been this fast?" Owen yells to us.

"I…I don't know." Amy responds. "I've never seen them move this quickly before. It shouldn't be possible."

I glance up and I feel my heart sinks.

"They're in the trees."

"Shit shit shit." Amy mutters. "This thing can't go any faster."

The figures on the road are around fifteen meters behind us but the ones in the trees are around five.

"What do we do?" Owen asks."

Amy looks around us as she continues flooring it down the road. She's thinking fast.

"We don't have much time. They're closing in." Owen tells us.

I glance behind us and see that he's right.

I look back at Amy and she seems to have resolved herself to something. She veers off of the road towards what looks like a clearing.

"I'm going to drive off the cliff."

"What?" Owen and I shout simultaneously.

"Do you have a death wish?" Owen shouts to her.

"Not necessarily." Amy yells at him. "But this is probably our only option."

"You got to be joking." Owen sinks down in his seat.

"You sure there isn't anything else we can do?" I ask her.

"Trust me." Amy tells us. "If we do this right, we should be fine. But listen carefully. When we drive over the cliff, jump as far as you can from the jeep."

"This is insane." Owen mutters.

"Well you have ten seconds to prepare yourself." Amy tells us. "Better get ready."

I face the front, gripping my seat and the door. Time seems to slow down as we near the clearing…the cliff. I take a deep breath…

And we go off the cliff.

"Jump!" Amy yells at us.

I push myself from my seat. For a moment, I am freefalling.

Then, I plummet into a pool of water. I hit the water hard and I gasp, causing water to enter my throat. I begin kicking towards the surface as fast as I can. I break the surface and begin coughing.

Owen breaks the surface a few feet away from me and begins coughing as well.

I look around trying to find Amy but I can't see her.

"Where's Amy?" I rasp out.

Owen looks around. " I don't see her."

"Dammit!" I spin around and begin searching the water. I remember she wasn't a good swimmer. She hated the water.

Suddenly Amy breaks the surface and gasps for air.

Relief hits me instantly.

"Thank God." I mumble.

As we tread water I look around and see we're in a large pool of water that leads off into a stream on one end. On the other is a decent sized waterfall. I glance up towards where we came from. The cliff has to be at least eighty feet from the surface of the water. Probably more.

To my relief, I can't see any shadowy figures looking over the edge.

We all swim to shore and climb out of the water onto the shoreline. Once we're out of the water, I collapse to the ground with relief.

We're alive. We're all alive.

I hear chuckling besides me turn to see Amy laughing, her arm thrown across her face. "I can't believe that worked."

Then I noticed the deep gash on her thigh.

In an instant, I'm by her side. I place my hand over the cut.

"What happened?"

"It's fine." She tells me. "It isn't as bad as it looks. I must've just cut it on something when I hit the water."

I pull my shirt over my shoulders and begin wrapping it around her leg.

"Wait what are you doing?" Amy asks me. I glance up towards her face and to my surprise she actually looks flustered.

"I need to stop the bleeding." I say, moving my focus back towards her leg.

"I told you it was fine."

"I know."

She turns away when she realizes I won't let it go so I continue fastening my shirt to her leg without any more protest from her. When I'm finished, I let my fingers linger on her leg just a little longer before I stand up. I hold out my hand to her to help her to her feet, but she pushes my hand away and stands up on her own.

"You know, you could've just ripped some of your shirt." Owen whispers to me.

"Shut up."

"Well, I think it's safe to say the radio receiver is gone." Amy tells us. "I guess we will have to find another way to find the signal."

"Maybe not." Owen says pointing up.

Amy and I turn towards where he's pointing and see that on top left side of the waterfall is what looks like a radio tower.

"Do you think that' it?" Amy asks.

"It's definitely a possibility." I say. Then I catch a glint of light or something coming from behind the falling water. "Guys…"

Amy and Owen look down to where I'm looking.

"What is that?" Owen asks.

Amy's eyes widen and she begins jogging towards the waterfall and we follow.

"It looks like there's something behind the waterfall." Amy says.

Before Owen and I could say anything, Amy climbs up on the rocks and walks underneath the falling water to the other side. I run towards her and climb up the rocks and through the water. When I emerge on the other side I swipe my wet hair out of my eyes and see what looks like a cave. The light I had seen is actually coming from a light bulb hanging from the ceiling of the cave.

I hear Owen emerge from the waterfall. He looks around his eyes widening as he takes it in.

"This place keeps getting weirder and weirder." He mumbles.

I look back at Amy who's looking farther down the cave. "Where do you think it goes?"

She begins to walk a few steps into the cave but I reach out and grab her wrist.

"Do you think this is a good idea?" I ask her.

"No." She responds. "But at this point, it's not like I have much to lose."

"You don't mean that."

"Eric, I've been here a long time." Amy tells me. "I'm tired and I want answers."

I release a breath I didn't know I was holding. "And you're hoping you might find some in here."

"Yes." Amy responds.

"Alright, but if it gets dangerous we leave." I say. "Deal?"

"Fine." Amy says and I let go of her wrist.

"You down for this?" I ask, turning towards Owen.

Owen lets out a sigh. "Not like I have anything better to do."

And with that, we're descending down a cave to the unknown.

The deeper we go, the colder it gets. I'm definitely more aware that I'm still shirtless and soaking wet. I look towards the other two and notice Amy shivering every so often and Owen's arms wrapped around himself looking uncomfortable. At this point I'm not sure if it's better to wear clothes that are soaking or not wear clothes at all. At least I'll be drying faster than they will.

Every few feet, there are light bulbs hanging from the ceiling, all attached to a wire heading deeper into the cave. After a few more minutes of walking, I notice an old looking gate up ahead. Amy pushes on it and it opens with a loud creak. We all cringe and wait to see if we hear anything respond to the loud noise we just created.

To our surprise, we hear nothing. Amy takes the first steps inside, a look of determination on her face.

Owen and I follow her. We round the corner our mouths drop.

The room is much larger than we could have anticipated, but that's not what has our attention. In the center is a full sized pyramid lit up by two lines of fire that follow the stairs up to the top.
