A/N: Hey guys…

Sorry, I know it's been a wait. Things have been rough the last few weeks….

Here's a prompt from Parment and Song.

Kid Skye gets hurt and May freaks out

I'm adding that Skye was adopted and May and Coulson were kind of thrown into parenthood without planning for it because that makes it more fun.

Enjoy!

OoOoOoO

The decision to go to the park was Skye's.

May had been a park person when she was a kid. While doing her brief stunt as a figure skater, she'd also become quite fond of gymnastics. In fact, she spent much of her childhood in a park similar to the one that they were in now, clinging to the pull up bar.

Not even ten seconds after clearing the front gate, Skye took off towards the swings, leaving Phil and Melinda to watch her run with a varying mix of emotions. Phil was happy, as he usually was, although the amount of paperwork he'd had to endure the last few weeks for her adoption was nothing to sneeze at. Melinda was stoic, although there was a feeling settling in her chest that she wasn't sure how to name.

"She sems to be settling well." Phil commented as they neared a bench. Skye had already found another girl, and the two of them were chasing each other around the playground.

"Something tells me she is flexible." Melinda replied quietly, having a seat. She, of course, was referring to Skye's nearly-eight-year jaunt through various foster homes across the US. When SHIELD had finally picked up that she was an 0-8-4, the two most capable agents were sent in to retrieve her. She was to stay with them until who knows when, something they were both more than apprehensive about.

"You know," Phil nudged her, mischief practically written on his face, "Agent Browder asked if we wanted to adopt her."

"Adopt her?" Melinda turned her head slightly, eyes still focused on Skye at the swings.

"Well, yeah." She didn't see it, but the smile fell off of Phil's face as he watched her.

If it was hard to get a read on Melinda on a normal day, then the last few weeks could be considered a challenge level. He had no idea what was going on inside her head. Phil, of course, loved the little girl. They hit it off instantly. He was the goofy dad she always wanted.

"Listen, May," Phil got her attention, "I know this isn't really what you wanted, but it could be a good thing. She's adjusting well, she likes us both. She's doing well in school. Could we give it a shot?"

Her eyebrow raised as she studied him for a moment. Finally, her mouth ticked up. Before she could say anything, she heard crying.

Skye's crying.

She jerked up from the bench, Phil following suit. In an instant, she was jogging over to the swings, anxiety planting itself firmly in the center of her chest.

"What happened?" She directed her question at the girl Skye was playing with, but her gaze was on her ward, who was sitting on the ground, clutching her elbow.

"We were going really high, but the swing broke." The other girl looked to be close to tears, and Phil put a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

May crouched next to Skye. "What hurts?"

"My arm." Skye was in tears. They streamed over her cheeks as she rocked herself.

"Phil-"

"I'll go grab the car." Coulson jogged off before May could even finish.

"Honey, listen," May tried to soothe Skye's crying. "I need to pick you up, okay? Let's go see a doctor."

Skye nodded and reached out her good arm to Melinda could lift her off the ground. Once settled, the two traversed to the gate where Phil had the car waiting.

That tightness in her chest didn't subside, not as they drove to the emergency room, her knuckles white on the seats. It lingered as they were admitted and as xrays were done.

Phil was a rock. He distracted Skye, told her stories, soothed back her hair. When the doctor came in with xray results, he had actually gotten her laughing.

"You seem to be doing better." The doctor commented. She was young, pretty. She had a friendly face and Skye liked her instantly. "Are the drugs kicking in?"

"Yeah." Skye nodded meekly, the smile still on her face.

"Well I have some good news." The doctor was addressing them now, the 'parents'. "Seems to me like it's just a greenstick fracture. Pretty common in children, because of how soft their bones are still. I noticed some swelling, but I don't think she is going to need surgery. What I am going to do is give her a splint, and wait a few days for the swelling to go down. Then we will see about getting her a cast and if surgery is necessary."

"Can I get a green one?"

The doctor chuckled, as did Phil. "We will certainly try."

"I am going to also suggest an over the counter for pain." She addressed Phil. Melinda slid over closer to Skye and took her good hand in hers. "If you're still having trouble at our next appointment, then I may be able to prescribe something a little stronger."

"Thank you." Phil nodded and the doctor left the room to begin the process of getting her a splint.

Once it was clear that Skye was okay to leave, they bundled her into the car and took off for home.

It was late. The magnificent pizza dinner (Skye's request) had been cleared away. The dishwasher was humming low. Skye had gone to bed, and Phil had gone up to help prop her up the way the doctor instructed, leaving Melinda to clean up.

That was fine with her. She needed a second to take a breath. That rock of anxiety and panic had been sitting in her chest all day, making it hard to breathe.

She was putting a trash bag back in the can when she heard Phil come back down stairs. She finished what she was doing and turned.

"She asleep?"

"Out like a light." He crossed his arms.

"Good." She breathed, turning her attention back to the pizza boxes she still had to run out to recycling.

"Hey." He grabbed her wrist gently and slowly spun her around so she was looking at him. "You okay?"

"Fine." She practically choked out.

He just looked at her a moment and finally pulled her towards him lightly. She was wrapped in his arms, the hospital smell still lingered on his shirt. It was then that whatever sat in her chest seemed to alleviate.

"It's okay to be worried." He murmured into her hair. She didn't reply, but she felt herself relax in his embrace.

After a moment, he chuckled and she felt the sound reverberate through his chest. "What?"

"I guess we should tell Agent Browder yes?"

"Shut up."

She felt him chuckle again.
