None of it made any sense. It happened too quickly, she was tied down in a pool of poison. It burned at her skin, wild seconds where she thought she was back in the throat of the snake creature, the fumes tossing spikes into her lungs and prickling behind her eyes. She heard Ruby screaming, looked up to see Huxley lying on the floor. Ruby launched herself at Polybotes, advancing a whole three steps before she crumpled to the ground, writhing and bucking and screaming anew. Polybotes' hand was outstretched, aimed at her, fingers splayed.
Raijin gripped her arm, crying as he desperately shook her. Wanted to help, had no idea how, didn't even get a chance to figure it out. Polybotes plucked him up by the back of his jacket. Raijin sobbed, landing a punch on the giant's thumb that was as bothersome as a fly.
It was a simple shift of his fingers that did it, a minor movement and then Polybotes had snapped the boy's neck. Louisa watched as his body was dropped too, landing on top of Huxley. He really did have it in for his ribs. Ruby had stopped screaming. She was lying on her back, staring up into nothingness. Blood stained her chin, had soaked her shirt, gathering on the stone beneath her.
Louisa blinked. This wasn't right. They had been out of their cages. They had been free.
Then why… why were they… why were they like that?
"You could have saved them." Polybotes said, looking down at the children at his feet. His eyes cut to her, raised an eyebrow. "This is your fault."
Numbness crawled down to her bones. She couldn't keep her head up. She blinked, saw tears splash on the chains around her chest. Her legs didn't feel attached. Did she still have hands? Arms?
Polybotes waved his hand. The poison retreated, rolling out of sight somewhere. She saw his reptilian feet come into view, kept her head down. "There's no-one here for you." He crouched, pinched the top of her head gently, making her look at him. "What is your choice?" Louisa stared at him. Her breath tasted like copper. Her lungs had shrunk, still bristling with fumes.
He waited, studying her face. Louisa sniffed. The silence drew out. She could hear dripping coming from somewhere.
He tipped his head to the side, gaze shifting, as though listening to something. "Yes…" He said quietly, nodding. "Yes, I see." He let go, her head dropped again. "I will give you time to think, demigod. You need to understand where your anger really lies." She hardly heard him, his words wriggling somewhere at the back of her mind. She closed her eyes to blink, slumping into unconsciousness.
