Mom, Secrets And More

Chapter 49

Jamie sat up slowly in the bed the next morning, opened his eyes and looked around the room, rubbed his eyes, and did a double-take. He sat for a moment as he got his bearings.

This isn't my room, he thought as he noticed an array of items...A chair, a dresser, and a comb on the nightstand with a missing tooth on it.

Oh, yeah, he thought to himself suddenly remembering. I was with Lee yesterday. This must be his place.

The clock radio on the nightstand to the right of him said 8 AM.

As Jamie gently rose from the bed, he noticed his pants and realized that he had on the same clothes from the day before, but where were his shoes, he wondered?

Searching around, he then walked to the other side of the bed near the closet and found his shoes.

Putting them on, he went to the bedroom door and opening it, then heard Lee and Amanda talking as she asked him, "I have eggs and bacon warming. Would you like-"

But Lee sighed tiredly answering, "No, thank you. You know I don't eat breakfast-"

Then the two chimed together, "Just coffee with cream-"

Lee finished with, "Yes! How many times do I have to tell you-"

Then Amanda started groaning, "But all this is just going to go to waste-"

Lee shook his head remarking, "Not if you and Jamie both eat it-"

Amanda sighed and shaking her head queried teasingly, "What am I gonna do with you?"

Lee shrugged and with a twinkle in his eyes looked at her and smiled responding, "C'mon. You've heard the saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", haven't you?"

Jamie thought as he continued listening, Wow...Guess Mom knows more about Lee than she let on...

He then heard his mother chuckle as she replied, "I think that only applies in certain cases, Big Fella. C'mon! I can just make toast for you then-"

Lee shaking his head firmly commented, "A-man-da! For the last time, no!"

"Mom...Lee...Excuse me!"Jamie cut in as he approached them, his voice slightly agitated, interrupting them.

They stopped and turned towards him.

"Good morning, Sweetheart." Amanda, forgetting Lee for the moment, greeted Jamie warmly as she came over to get a good look at him, and giving him a kiss asked,"How are you feeling?"

Jamie shrugged, "Okay, I guess."

Amanda smiled and gestured, "Good...Would you like some breakfast? It's almost ready. You go sit down and I'll bring your juice, alright?"

Jamie answered, "Sure. Thanks, Mom."

As Jamie got to the dining room and sat down, Amanda poured orange juice into a glass and bringing it out, put the glass on the table in front of him, stating, "Here you go, Honey."

Jamie replied, "Thanks," and taking a sip of juice, put the glass down and then asked, "So, Mom? You weren't in the bedroom with me, then?"

Amanda responded, "No. I stayed out here on the rollaway bed."

Jamie sighed and queried, "What happened yesterday? Lee and I were here, and then you came over. Why?"

Lee cleared his throat and sitting down in the dining room chair near Jamie commented carefully, "Well, Jamie. You-You had a rough time yesterday, so you and I hung out here for the afternoon. You took a nap after lunch, and then later had a bad dream. I was worried about you, so I called your mom over with Dr. Pfaff, who didn't stay long. He gave her medicine for you, to help you sleep-"

As Jamie nodded, Amanda came over to Jamie's side and stroking his back responded gently, "Honey, we had Animal Crackers and I gave you some warm milk to help you sleep- I even sang to you. Remember?"

Jamie thought carefully for a moment, and commented with a shrug, "Sort of. Is there something really wrong with me, though?"

Lee and Amanda shared a concerned look and Amanda cupping Jamie's cheek gently answered, "No, of course not, Jamie. There are some things that you and Lee and I need to talk about, however, but you're gonna be fine, okay? I don't want you to worry, though. We'll figure everything out soon, I promise..."

Jamie nodded as Amanda turning back to head to the kitchen remarked, "Let me go get your breakfast now."

As she went into the kitchen, Jamie looked at Lee and asked, "Where did you sleep if I was in your room?"

Lee smiled and putting a hand on Jamie's shoulder answered, "I was on the couch, your mom was on the rollaway, and you used my room."

Jamie queried, "Why?"

Lee shrugged and commented, "Because I knew you needed your rest, Pal. It's called being considerate to friends who stay over."

Jamie nodded replying, "Oh." as he drank the rest of his juice and putting the glass down once more said quietly, "Lee, I'm-I'm sorry if I scared you yesterday. I just wish I could stop being afraid of stuff, you know?"

Lee nodded and swallowing hard, gently pulled Jamie to him for a hug and holding him commented softly as he patted his back, "You-You will, Sport. It's just gonna take time, alright? But don't worry. Your mom and I will be here to help you get through this..."

And from the kitchen doorway, Amanda stood watching the tender scene as she held Jamie's breakfast plate, and as tears came to her eyes, she thought, Lee's right, Jamie. You're going to be just fine. We'll make sure of it...Somehow...
