Series 2, Episode 62 ~ House of Magic

The twins were still on edge as they looked around the room as the Sibuna's huddled together, neither of them happy with the spirits annoying interruptions. She was becoming less than helpful especially as they were helping her at the end of the day.

"14 symbols." Nina spoke up as she crossed her arms over her chest, "two per reflector. Facing each other..."

"One is useless without the other," Camilla added as she lent against the zodiac wall.

Fabian sighed as he looked between the two girls, it was getting late and from the way Amber was clutching onto Alfie's sleeve she was spooked. They had the information they needed and the task chamber wasn't giving them anything new. "guys come on," he told them with a nod of his head towards the tunnels. Camilla nodded and pushed off the wall, joining her brother by the entrance as Alfie, Patricia and Amber headed off. Nina hung back a little in the task chamber, causing Amber to pause and look back at her.

"Nina... your glowing?!"

Amber's shout caused the twins to look around to see Nina had crossed the room and was stood next to a wall, causing her locket to light up.

"Thanks," Nina rolled her eyes at Amber but taking the compliment from her friend.

"No, your locket!" Patricia told the girl as she stormed back into the chamber, past the twins pointing her torch to the girl's locket.

"Oh," Nina glanced down to see her locket was in fact glowing. The twins looking to Camilla's ring on her hand to see her's wasn't.

"Move over Cam..." Fabian muttered. Camilla, nodding her head. The Sibuna's all gasping as they saw the girl's ring start to glow as she approached Nina. There was something magical about the wall.

"What are these glowing for?" Nina asked as she looked from her locket to Camilla's ring to the wall The Protector was looking at. Her eyes darting around as she tried to find whatever they had missed.

"there," Alfie pointed having searched the wall, his torchlight pointing to a crack on the wall, "the crack."

"It must be a door." Nina confidently spoke

"oh, I love us secret door." Camilla couldn't help but excitedly squeal sounding for a moment like a 5-year-old.

"Guys look," Fabian had been searching like Camilla, but for some reason, something in him caused him to not look at the door but to the walls. He lifted his torch, the light going over a small grove on the wall, but it wasn't like the oven groove which was the eye of Horus symbol like the locket, this one was a groove of an amulet – still with the Horus Falcon on it. "it's a special lock."

Nina put her locket to it – as that always seemed to work – but this time nothing seemed to happen causing confusion to flit across her face, "my locket doesn't open this."

"Maybe..." Camilla spoke up an idea forming in her mind as she took in the dimensions of the groove, "its not a Chosen One lock... but a task lock."

"An amulet opens it," Fabian spoke up as he understood what his sister was hinting at.

Nina shrugged and put her amulet to the door. Her amulet had the engraving of Sekhmet – a lion-headed woman with a sun disc on her head. The amulet didn't work causing the American girl to step back looking a little putout.

"Maybe it is mine!" Amber excitedly spoke up, lifting her amulet up, "maybe I'm the chosen too." Excitedly Amber put her amulet to the door. This amulet having the engraving of Hathor on it – a woman with the head of a cow.

Like Nina's turn, the door stayed firmly shut.

"Not even a door recognises my talents." Amber scoffed.

"That's because your too talented for the door," Camilla spoke up for her best friend causing a grin to appear on Amber's face at her words.

"Guys wait..." Fabian moved closer to the door to examine the area closer. "Horus..." he muttered softly, as he saw the Falcon wearing a crown with a cobra on it engraved onto the wall. "who has Horus!" he asked turning as Patricia and Alfie lifted their amulets to let the twins see them. Neither of the two having the amulet needed.

"None of us do..." Nina sighed dejectedly. "the Amulet that opens this door is Victors."

"I guess we are stealing back the king of Egypt," Camilla smirked slightly at the challenge at hand. She was all for Victor having an amulet as it had helped them out but she had just been given the right motivation to finally side with the Sibuna's in stealing it back.

Gustav was there for dinner that evening and honestly, Camilla couldn't be more annoyed with the man if she tried. The girl glaring at the stunning blood red cocktail dress that was longer at the back than the front that Amber had somehow found and modified for her to wear before she left the room to join everyone at breakfast. On any other occasion, she'd have been excited to wear the dress but the dress meant a fancy dinner with Gustav pretending to be thee Camilla-Anne Rutter that was associated with the Rutter family.

Fabian looked as excited as Camilla felt as she slipped into her seat beside him. "Amber looked me out my penguin suit..." he muttered to his sister as she slumped down in her chair.

"I sometimes I really hate our family name."

"Ditto." Was Fabian's only response. Nina letting out an amused laugh as she slipped into her own chair seeing the identical unamused looks on the twin's faces. For two people who lived an adventures life of discovery and history, you'd think the two could handle one fancy dinner.

"another door." Fabian spoke up as Amber placed down a plate of food for herself and Nina before sitting down at the table. Patricia and Alfie joining them for the Sibuna meeting. "we need that amulet now more than ever."

Fabian glanced to his sister whose hand had gone to her dainty amulet of Isis around her neck. She had told him all about being drawn to the necklace the year before, and there was something about seeing the symbol of Horus that he was having a similar vibe with. Though that was the least of their worries as a group so he hadn't shared his feelings with anyone but Camilla.

"Let's go over the plan," Alfie said from his seat next to Amber as he grabbed a muffin and put it on his plate. "okay, I take the fake amulet and place it up my sleeve," he lifted his arm to point to his sleeve, "then I take the real amulet from Victor... with a little help from Camilla."

"I've got you sorted," Camilla told him with a nod, causing a laugh to bubble from Amber at the fake serious look on her friend's face.

"I wrap that amulet in a handkerchief. Then I take off my shoe and SMASH IT!"

"NO!" Fabian instantly shouted interrupting the boy with a panicked look on his face whilst the rest of the Sibuna's tried to recover from the jump scare of Alfie's so early in the morning.

"don't worry," Alfie reassured Fabian, "that bit is going to simply be an illusion. Whilst Victor is panicking, I do a switch and give him the fake amulet in one piece. Victor will think he's got the real amulet, he hasn't cos the Amazing Alfredo has kept the real Macoy!"

"Huh?!" Patricia summed up very easily how they all felt about the plan.

"no, no..." Fabian shook his head at the boy across the table, as he rubbed at the empty place where his watch once used to sit, "just do a straight swap, please."

"why don't you just take the real one," Nina spoke up, "make it disappear, swap it and hand over the fake."

"Victor is happy. Gustav is happy." Fabian spoke up.

"And we," Nina smiled at the male twin before looking to Alfie, "have our amulet back."

Alfie looked a little discouraged by this boring plan, but it was the geeks who were coming up with it. They had no sense of theatrical flair. "yeah if you wanna be boring!"

"Is that really your stage name? the Amazing Alfredo?" Camilla was clearly taking the Sibuna meeting very seriously.

"Yeah..." Alfie wasn't sure why the girl was questioning him or why she looked at him so oddly.

"Isn't Alfriado a type of Pasta sauce? So, you're the Amazing Pasta Sauce?" this caused Fabian who had just taken a sip of his black coffee to do a spit take as he burst out laughing. Alfie was really going on 'stage' as the Amazing Pasta Sauce.

"oh, har har..." Alfie slumped back in his chair slightly as he bit into his toast dejectedly.

"Your attention please!" Mr Sweets voice came from over the tannoy system, something none of the students where happy he had managed to get fixed and something Camilla noted down to rope Patricia into helping her disable somehow – the girl was good with computers she'd know a way, Camilla assumed. "Food rots so please don't store it in your lockers!"

"You're one of my favourite people in the world, but you're acting really weird right now." Alfie's voice was clearly heard over the laughter of students who were reacting to Mr Sweet's daily announcements.

Camilla turned around to see the boy walking next to a dejected-looking Jerome before Jerome muttered something causing Alfie to run back the other way. whatever was said Camilla had no clue but one thing she did know for certain was Jerome was making a beeline towards her. Camilla raised a hand and waved at him slightly, causing Jerome to send her a small smile and a wave back. Camilla could see the tiredness and worry in his eyes. There was something he wasn't telling her, something that was gnawing away at him. She didn't know why he wasn't telling her but she knew it must have been for good reasons. That was one of the things she had come to admire about the boy, the two rarely had secrets – which was a surprising fact she hadn't realised until now - and if they did hide something from the other it was always for a good reason. So, Camilla didn't see the need to push him for what he was hiding, unlike Mara who had rushed from the bathroom blocked Jerome's path. From her stance, she was demanding answers.

"So how did it go with Jasper?" Camilla heard Mara say as she swung her bag over her shoulder and closed her locker door. "did you confront him about the letter?"

"Yep." Jerome looked away slightly, before looking Mara in the eye, "he has spoken to Trudy, she says she got someone else to write the letter. Or something. Its no biggy." With that, he looked away. Camilla knew instantly Jerome was lying. Looking a person in the eye was always his tell, much like how Fabian rubbed at his nose while he lied or Nina tended to use exaggerated hand gestures.

"why would she let someone else write a personal letter like that?" Mara asked, causing Camilla to look slightly impressed. She might not realise Jerome was lying but she defiantly picked up that what he was saying was odd.

"Who knows?" Jerome shrugged, "maybe she sprained her wrist whilst baking..."

"no! something is defiantly going on!" Mara insisted, "you have to go speak to Mr Sweet!"

Jerome gritted his teeth together before putting a fake smile onto his face as he looked back at the girl, "you really can't turn off your inner reporter for five minutes, can you Mara?" he half teased half said infuriatingly.

If he thought he was being subtle he was in for a rude awakening as Mara looked at him rather hurt, "What?"

"Just give it up. There isn't a story here, believe me." Jerome told her bluntly, "Trudy is with her brother until he recovers and everything is okay."

Mara looked at his suspiciously but nodded her head at his words, "right... okay..." she muttered before moving off down the hall.

Camilla watched as Jerome let out a sigh and walked over to his locker, opening the door and leaning against it. Something was defiantly odd about what he had just said to Mara.

Expertly weaving her way through the crowd in the new heels Amber had ordered her, she approached Jerome and leaned on the locker next to him crossing her arms with a knowing smirk "liar liar..." she spoke up in almost a sing-song voice causing Jerome to let out a soft groan, "want to tell me the truth or?" Camilla trailed off as Jerome glanced at her. She could see the bags under his eyes from a night of little sleep, the worry was still in his eyes as was something else as his eyes met hers. As if seeing her still there with him was a slight hope, a slight joy to him. "Tell you what?" Camilla spoke up again a bright smile on her face, "Want to skip and just chill in The Lab?"

Jerome blinked and looked at her standing straight as if surprised by what she was saying. "but what about –"

Camilla put her hand up to stop him talking before giving him a knowing look as she too stood up straighter, noting that even in the heels Jerome was still a head taller than her, "You can tell me whatever it is your up too whenever your good and ready," she told him in a soft voice, causing the boy's shoulders to relax at her words. This was why he had hunted for Camilla during the school day, she didn't push. They seemed to just know what the other needed and if he wanted to get through the school day, she was the person he knew she had to be next too. "Come on." Camilla held her hand out to him as an open invitation to her offer, "No one is going to notice we're gone...well until the dinner tonight."

Jerome let out a small chuckle as he looked at her hand. Shutting his locker and taking it, being rewarded with a bright smile from the girl in front of him before she pulled him into the sea of students. The boy feeling so much lighter than he had before just because he caused the smile on the girl's face.

The Lab's earthy aroma wrapped around the two students welcoming hug. Jerome and Camilla had defiantly made themselves comfortable both of them throwing their blazer's off and had thrown them onto the couches along with their school bags. They had both been avoiding the topic which had caused them to go running to The Lab and instead they focused on just them. They hadn't really hung out just them in a very long time – well least not since Camilla had really computed her feelings and Mara had become a constant in Jerome's life thanks to Mick leaving. They were enjoying the time together.

"Many spells have a verbal component," Jerome read from Camilla's grimoire from a stool, Camilla having clicked her fingers causing the old gramophone in the corner to burst to life and was dancing along to the music along with some of Victor's overly large magical plants. They needed exercising and they preferred dancing or so the older man had said. "but that does not mean it has to come from your mouth..." Jerome trailed off as he looked up at Camilla.

"It means saying it in my head... non-verbal magic." She told him with a laugh, turning to the plants as the record came to an end to curtsy, the plants bowing their heads slightly as if understanding the dancing was over. "which is all well and good, if you actually know the spell in the first place," Camilla explained as she switched the gramophone off and wandered over to the boy, plucking her grimoire from his fingers before moving past him to sit down on the couch they hadn't dumped their stuff on, "if you don't know the spell and try it... well I don't want to see the results."

"and here I thought learning French was hard." Jerome teased as he moved over to sit beside her picking up the two steaming mugs of tea he had made during her dancing – before he had gotten nosey and read the grimoire.

Camilla smiled at him as she took the tea off him, the day in The Lab had been a beneficial one for her as well. With everything Sibuna a day off was something she needed. "you know, I think I needed this," Camilla told him honestly sadness creeping into her expression as she realised that as long as Nina was in danger – and as The Chosen One Camilla was sure even after school danger was going to follow Nina – she would never have a normal life. "with everything that comes with school, being a Rutter, this..." Camilla threw her grimoire onto the wooden coffee table, "everything with Sibuna and Nina... sometimes I forgets what normal is these days. It was nice to just be a teenage girl for an afternoon before going back to the real world."

Jerome tilted his head at her as he watched her expression change as she spoke. So many people depended on her, even if they didn't realise it. It also didn't help he knew she bared the burden of a lot of things so the others didn't have too. She was the protector, and she wanted to protect her friends but he was starting to realise that other than Fabian – who had his own issues he was dealing with so sometimes forgot to check in on Camilla – who was protecting and looking after the small girl who sat next to him? surely the gods wouldn't have granted such a task to the girl without giving her someone to turn too. "That makes you one of the strongest people I know." Jerome told her, reaching out and taking her free hand, "you are everyone's rock. You are there when people need you and you don't complain about it." Jerome was rewarded with a smile from Camilla as she looked at him, "The second something gets bad, you're the person I go running too,"

"and I never want you to stop doing that." Camilla interrupted him causing him to laugh slightly as he put down his mug and put an arm around her shoulder, pulling her into a side hug so her head was leaning on his shoulder and he could feel her bodyweight press against him slightly and Camilla let out a soft sigh as the pair turned to watch the plants across the room.

She was alive. She was there. And right now, to him, it felt like the world wasn't fighting either of them; as if it saw they were together in that moment and knew everything was right. "I feel better when I'm with you than I do without you." Jerome murmured softly in realisation. Unsure of what that really meant but knowing right now, with the girl in his arms everything felt right.

Their moment of peace was shattered as they walked into Anubis house. Amber grabbing Camilla before rushing up the stairs to get her ready for the dinner that evening. Of course, the girl was not happy when she saw the other outfit that had been laid out on the bed for Camilla. "ALFIE LEWIS! What the hell is this outfit!" Came Ambers bellow causing Camilla to laugh as she set to work curling her hair.

Camilla hadn't planned on wearing the outfit as Alfie's magical Assistant but the fact he had put it on her bed told her that his initial plan to ask Piper had fallen through – good news for Amfie. Vera soon came to grab Amber to show her the correct way to set the table along with Nina leaving Camilla to finish getting herself dressed.

Camilla gripped onto the bannister for dear life as she descended the stairs in the white heels Amber had matched her dress with. The heels being a lot larger than she was used too and though the outfit looked good she was so scared she was going to fall down at any second.

"Whoa..." she heard someone say causing her to look up as she reached the bottom. Jerome and Eddie where to play welcoming committee to Gustav and where waiting in the hallway.

Camilla smiled at them both as she finally reached them, "do I look okay?" she laughed doing a little twirl in the dress. The deep red dress had halter like neckline which covered her scar she got from Rufus the year before (something Camilla was very happy about), and the dress flared out at her waist stopping just above the knee at the front causing the chiffon-like material to sway naturally as she walked. Camilla adding her own little touch by adding a small belt to the waist. Her hair was down and curled – nothing fancy – matched with hanging star earrings, Jerome and Alfie had gotten her for her birthday and the Sibuna bracelet Amber had gotten herself, Camilla, Patricia and Nina.

"You look great Cam," Eddie told her as she looked their way expecting an answer and clearly Jerome wasn't able to speak.

"Camilla, could you fix this please." Fabian came bustling from his room in his suit, the bowtie hung around his neck, which was enough of a distraction for Camilla as she turned to help her twin.

"chin up," Eddie smirked turning to Jerome whose eyes were on the girl he'd spent the day with, looking at her in awe, basking in her beauty. "you're drooling a little there Jerry..."

"oh, shut up," Jerome told Eddie who laughed.

Camilla finally finished fixing Fabian's bowtie and the boy extended his arm to her in the way they had been taught. The two boys in the hallway looking on bemused as the twins they had grown used to all of a sudden took on personas. Both standing straighter holding themselves with poise. Fake but not unnatural smiles appearing on their faces. Both of them rubbing their fingers for a second – Jerome knowing they were used to having place cards and dance cards but this time there was none – before Fabian led his sister into the dining room.

"Ah, the return of Lord Fabian Jonathan Rutter and Lady Camilla-Anne Rutter, son and daughter of the Mormaer of Fife," He muttered to Eddie who looked at the two baffled. "you would never know would you, unless they told you. They now hate that part of their lives probably due to the bloody history it comes with, that's the reason their dad hates it so much and doesn't do anything with it, unlike their grandfather. They have a pretty cool house up in St. Andrews though."

"Right..." Eddie agreed not knowing what a Mormaer was but it sounded fancy. The twins where just layers of secrets no one would ever know about.

The night went on smoothly the twin's fake smiles remained on their faces all night though they had to admit the food was good. Soon Fabian was up to perform causing the biggest grin on Gustav's face as he realised one of his favourite twins was part of the evening's entertainment. Victor and Camilla shared a joint look of boredom from the two ends of the table.

Gustav's clap at the end of Fabian's performance was only outshined by Camilla's. she may be bored out of her mind at the dinner but she would forever be her brother's number one fan, and from the grin on his face he knew it. As he settled down at the table, he leaned over to her, "I think you'll find that was a little piece I named, Camilla-Anne,"

"Awww Fabby," Camilla smiled at her brother.

"Fabian that was wonderful!" Gustav told him, causing the twins to come out from their whispers to look to the man sat between their Uncle and Mr Sweet with their usual polite smiles.

"Thank you, Sir," Fabian told the man politely.

"Honestly, I had no idea you had such a talent," Gustav gushed before looking to Mr Sweet, "this school truly brings out the best in its pupils. Your students are a credit to your school. Excellent."

With that Patricia, Amber and Nina all placed dessert down in front of them all, causing Gustav's smile to falter a little as he realised it was the chocolate cake Vera had 'made' last time he was at the school. "Oh? We're not having your chocolate nightmare cake?" he asked Vera who sat next to Victor.

"Oh, I couldn't get one..." Vera said causing Gustav, Camilla and Fabian to all look at her with suspicion. "I mean, one of the ingredients..." she quickly corrected but as the man turned to look at the twins the damage was done. The two could tell, causing their fake smiles to be replaced by knowing mischievous smirks, which the man caught and subtly gave them one of his own before facing the table again. "Patricia was so keen to help me cook for you I couldn't deny her." Vera kept rambling having missed the exchange between the twins and the exhibition owner.

"No, we can't deny the students." He told Vera looking to the plate before looking to Patricia, "this looks... simply lovely." Patricia took this as a good sign and backed away, "everything has been first class! The dinner, the company, the twins..." this caused a fake laugh to come from Camilla which caused Gustav's smile to brighten slightly not hearing the fakeness of the laugh. "even the entertainment has been first class."

"ah, but there is more," Fabian spoke up causing the adults to look to the end of the table where Camilla and Fabian sat.

"There is Fabian?" Gustav asked curiously.

"yes I'm afraid, there is," Victor sighed dreading the act to come clearly.

"Behold," Stood up helping his sister to her feet as she would be 'assisting' Alfie, "The Amazing –"

Before he could say anymore Alfie rushed into the room and shouted, "The Amazing Alfredo and his beautiful assistant Camilla-Anne Rutter!" Alfie held his hand out to Camilla who laughed but took it.

"Camilla sit down!" Vera hissed but was waved away by Gustav who smiled at the girl.

"Oh Trust me I've seen Camilla at her highest and lowest, we are pretty much family at this point and it's lovely to see her helping to show off other students works." He told the woman who sat back not looking happy Camilla was up helping, but knew not to argue.

After a few simple tricks like disappearing coins, card tricks, and changing Camilla's earrings from stars to moons – thank you real magic – the pair performing looked to one another and nodded their head. It was time for the real performance, one they had yet to tell the Sibuna's about.

"Sir..." Alfie turned to look to Victor.

"No." Victor bluntly spoke. He wasn't going to be apart of anything, and he wasn't happy Camilla was using real magic to help the boy out – he could see the magic after effects on her earrings.

"Play along Victor," Gustav encouraged the man.

"Sir, may I borrow your watch?" Alfie asked.

"ah... now, unfortunately, I have left my fob watch in my other-"

"No problem," Alfie told him darting forward, "I'll just use this neat little necklace here –" he went to grab the amulet from Victor's pocket but the man grabbed his wrist before he could pull away.

"Victor," Camilla said eyes widening, "it's a little magic trick..."

"Relax," Gustav agreed with Camilla, "as Camilla said it a little trick."

Due to the company at the table, they all knew Victor had to let go of Alfie and that is where the Sibuna's had the upper hand. "I promise he'll take good care of whatever it is..." Camilla reassured Victor pretending to play dumb causing the man to glower at her and roll his eyes.

"Now I do believe there is a small scratch on your necklace," Alfie told Victor holding it up for the table to see, "Allow me to fix it for you. Now, this is my magic handkerchief, it's woven from the finest silk from Egypt itself,"

"Ohhhh," Camilla spoke up using her hands to show off the garment

"I'm going to make a small bag, alas the bag of allusion, a sack of mysticism... now I take your necklace and it shall enter the bag..." With that he placed the handkerchief he'd made into the bag and placed it into the third secret pocket, Camilla had spelled into the bag that no one but he and Camilla knew about.

"Ohhh," Camilla tried to encourage the crowd getting a, "Ahhh!" back from an enthusiastic Gustav, and very nervous looks from the Sibuna's.

Alfie placed the bag onto the table getting to his knees and taking his shoes off. "Now personally, I like to use my magic shoe... don't worry I'm just going to give it a little tap." With that, Alfie went to home on the bag causing all the Sibuna's to cover their faces and Camilla to look away trying not to laugh.

Alfie stood up and emptied the handkerchief to reveal the broken pieces causing all the adults to gasp.

Victor was the first to get to his feet as he glared at Alfie who suddenly looked very nervous under the man's gaze.

"I know what you are thinking... em, we've gone a bit wrong..." he faked sounding nervous.

"It's up his sleeve..." Gustav spoke with a wide smile on his face.

"Yes!" Victor agreed looking relieved his amulet wasn't really broken. "Mr Amazing, perhaps you would like to remove your jacket."

Alfie glanced at Camilla pretending to look nervous and giving her a wink before looking back to the teachers. This was when the fun bit was about to happen.

"A magician never reveals his secrets!" Camilla moved forward to stand next to Alfie, the danger shoes she was wearing needed to come into play soon as this needed to be timed right for the best performance.

"Give. Me. You're. Jacket." Victor threatened the boy.

"Victor, I promise you..." Camilla started but was silenced with a look from the furious man.

Alfie nervously fumbled with his hands and something felt to the floor behind him in a bag. Victor noticed it as everyone else did – except Camilla (or so the pair performing were pretending."

"Seriously Victor!" Camilla moved forward and as she did the heel of her shoe went on the bag and everyone heard the crack that followed it.

"NO!" Victor screamed causing Camilla and Alfie to look to one another as the room erupted into chaos around them.
