Series 2, Episode 63 ~ House of Tricks
Alfie and Camilla couldn't help the smiles that flashed onto their faces as they glanced to one another. Chaos ringing out around them both.
They had everyone fooled.
Perfect.
They just needed to end with a convincing flourish and they were free to explain to the Sibuna's their plan before any of them murdered them anyway.
"I guess things have gone a bit wrong..." Alfie dramatically gulped as Camilla lifted her heel and bent to grab the bag from the floor in the ladylike way she had been taught. The pieces of the broken amulet dropping to the floor one by one.
Victor was turning a funny shade of red as he glanced at the two trying to contain his anger in front of Gustav. The man in question however burst out laughing – clearly finding the whole thing rather amusing. This caused two very nervous laughs to bubble from Jasper and Mr Sweet as Vera put on a strained smile.
"Victor!" Gustav spoke up with a grin, "you ruined this poor lad's trick, and got tricked because of it!" this caused a new wave of laughter from the boy causing Camilla to send the man a smile. Thank you, Gustav, for giving her and Alfie the excuse they hadn't thought up. Victor was at fault for his own amulet destruction, or that was now what he was to believe.
"Leave us!" Victor screamed waving at the two in the centre of the room, and Alfie didn't need to be told twice as he held out his arm for Camilla – as Fabian had taught him all those years ago when the residents of the house found out about the twin's titles and demanded posh lessons (it was part of the reason Jerome and Alfie always offered their arm to Camilla when walking. the girl was a lady and deserved to be treated as such) – and the two hurried from the room. The handkerchief still tightly gripped in Camilla's hands.
Camilla wasn't sure what excuses the other's made but soon the rest of the Sibuna's had hunted down Camilla and Alfie in the girl's bedroom – none of them surprised the first thing Camilla had done was take off her shoes and put on her UGG boot slippers – which totally clashed with her dress but Amber knew there was way pressing matters to deal with than the current fashion disaster.
"Alfie! Camilla!" a furious sounding Nina screamed as she watched the pair high fiving one another with huge grins on their faces. The two turning to face the row of angry Sibuna's not even looking worried.
"Nina!" Camilla mocked causing a laugh from Alfie who stood next to her as the pair looked over the group who were trying very hard to look scary and only Patricia was really succeeding in the pair's minds.
"you guys ruined our only chance at getting through that hidden door!" Nina dramatically yelled, not appreciating that Camilla – of all people – wasn't taking the tasks seriously anymore.
"Gods, what's the matter, Nina?" Alfie asked calmly looking at the American girl, "I thought with Camilla on our side you'd believe in magic by this point in the term," with that he tucked a strand of hair behind Camilla's ear and pulled the intact amulet out of his sleeve for the Sibuna's to see.
The four Sibuna's faces all went from looks of anger to ones of surprise causing Camilla to let out a giggle.
"Guys...why did you do that?" Amber asked in awe.
Fabian racing over to his sister and grabbed her into a hug, spinning her in a circle. "you guys are brilliant! I knew you wouldn't have let us down; I just knew it."
As Fabian put Camilla back down on her feet Alfie smiled at her before explaining their plan to their friends, "well I knew I couldn't simply do a standard disappearing trick, Victor would always assume we had it."
"so, he came to me," Camilla spoke up with a smile from next to her brother, "and we put our heads together to form a plan to make him believe we had really destroyed it."
"and neither of you thought to share?" Patricia demanded a little put out she hadn't been included in the plan.
"We needed your real reactions," Camilla told the girl kindly, "Victor would never buy it on your guys acting skills alone."
"but... how? We all saw Camilla stand on the bag in those monster shoes. We all heard the cracking noise," Fabian asked the pair amused by the whole situation.
"Real magic..." Camilla grinned looking to Alfie.
"well, a little real Magic helped out a little," Alfie nodded his head, before looking to the group as he explained their plan in full, "I knew we needed two smashed amulets to fool everyone. So, I took a fake amulet wrapped it in an identical handkerchief, and I put it up my sleeve."
"then we made a decoy amulet out of clay in art class," Camilla added.
"I dropped the decoy from my sleeve picked up Victor's real amulet and placed it into a secret pocket Camilla had spelled the bag to have, whilst putting the decoy amulet into the pouch you all saw me make."
"which is the one Alfie smashed with his shoes," Camilla concluded with a grin.
"After I showed the smashed pieces of clay, knowing everyone was distracted by that one. I took the real amulet out of the magic bag and put it into my pocket." Alfie shrugged as if it was that simple, "but we knew we had to make sure Victor saw two broken amulets. So, I deliberately dropped our fake one on the floor."
"where I accidentally stepped on it when moving forward to try to reassure Victor." Camilla laughed.
"The real one was safe the whole-time guys," Alfie told them all lifting it up for them all to see.
"You two!" Nina squealed racing forward to bear hug Alfie as Fabian pulled his sister into another side hug, pride clearly etched onto his face as he looked down at her.
As Nina let go of Alfie her smile faded from her face, "Guys the dollhouse..." they all turned to look to the dollhouse which was normally pushed by the window between Amber and Camilla's beds, but it had been pulled out slightly on the side next to Camilla's bed, "it's been moved..." Nina observed as she raced over to it, pushing it back against the wall. "someone's been in here," Nina dramatically spoke Camilla having no clue how she had made that leap. The dollhouse could have moved itself for all she knew. It was magic after all.
"Are you sure?" Fabian asked, clearly having the same thoughts as his sister.
"Yeah, Nina's right..." Amber pipped up as she moved to her bed to look at the dollhouse, "someones moved it and the table away from the wall."
"Maybe you should lock it up..." Fabian said to the girls.
"It's a huge dollhouse, where are we going to fit it?!" Camilla asked her brother.
"One of your wardrobes?"
"NOT MINE!" Amber and Camilla instantly said together causing the Sibuna's to look at Nina.
"Mine it is... This dollhouse is one thing we cannot let Victor get his hands on." Nina dramatically told them all.
"Uncle Jasper? Uncle Jasper?" Camilla called as wandered into the exhibition. It was lunchtime and she knew Victor was probably best to be avoided after yesterday, so Camilla had thought her uncle could help her out with some of the hieroglyphics she had found in the book of Isis that even her new Thoth tattoo seemed to be stumbling over. "You free to help me with some hieroglyphic deciphering?" she paused as she looked up saw the boy stood next to her Uncle on the balcony area of the library/exhibition, the two looking shifty as if up to something but what was the question. "Jerome?"
As she called his name Jerome stood up straighter looking down at her before looking to Jasper, "eh, thanks for helping me out..." Jerome told the man before grabbing his school bag and rushing down the steps to the bottom floor, "Milly..." he nodded to her before he rushed from the door.
Camilla watched him go before turning to look at her Uncle who had followed Jerome down the stairs, "what was that all about?" she asked the man.
"it's a surprise I'm afraid," Jasper told her with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes, causing Camilla to not believe what he was saying.
"Right..."
"Promise me you'll keep that boy in your life, it's clear he cares a lot about you..." Camilla's suspicious look softened as she looked back at the door Jerome had just left from, biting on her bottom lip as she did so. Jerome may not be planning a surprise for her as Jasper had just hinted at but the man had all but stated that whatever he was up too it involved her. She really hoped whatever it was he was up too he wasn't putting himself into danger.
"you said something about Hieroglyphics?" Jasper asked causing Camilla's head to turn back round to him.
"Oh yes!" Camilla smiled, opening her bag and rummaging through it for the picture she had printed and written all over, "I'm doing a project for mum's people, kind of, and just need a little help with these. I have decoded them but they don't sound right." Jasper looked surprised but took the picture she handed out and lead her to his desk where he could work better.
"Your working with your mother?" Jasper asked.
"No, her people." Camilla corrected him sadly. "me working with mum would involve her acknowledging me and Fabian exist." Her words she knew cut through Jasper and he glanced to one of two framed photos on his desk. Camilla followed his gaze and her mouth tightened. One of the photos was of herself and Fabian one Christmas when they were younger with Jasper, the second one was of Jasper, her mother and her Father as they all graduated Amun Academy. She only ever saw her parent's genuine smiles in photographs. She didn't think she'd ever see them smile so widely and so unapologetically as they did in that photo in real life.
"How come they don't want us?" the question slipped from her mouth before she could even stop it. The question that had plagued her for years. The question she didn't really want to be answered in case the answer was something worse than the question itself.
"Camilla..." Jasper's soft sigh caused her to look up to see the man had his reading glasses on but the pages she had given him were now lying forgotten on his desk. "they do want you and Fabian, they just..." he paused as if trying to figure out how to word what he wanted to say. "one day you will understand the mindset of your parents, not that I agree with everything they have chosen to do."
"what?"
"There is more to your history that is effecting their choices than you know, but that is all I can say."
Camilla looked at the man as he glanced back down at her papers. What did he mean? She already was dealing with so much she didn't need some weird cryptic answer from her uncle to add more questions to the mix. "okay, you see here this is where you have gone wrong." Jasper's words brought her back to reality as the man pointed to the paper and Camilla let herself get distracted by what he was helping her do.
The Sibuna meeting called was straight after lunch and Fabian greeted his sister with a grin as she threw herself into the seat next to him. "How's Uncle Jasper?" Fabian asked knowing his sister had gone to talk to him about some hieroglyph problem she had.
"he's fine," Camilla shrugged knowing there was no point bringing up his weird behaviour with Jerome, "but he said something odd about mum and dad when I brought up their warm, kind, loving parental style."
"like what?"
"' there is more to your history that is effecting their choices than you know'" Camilla quoted causing confusion to cross Fabian's face.
"What does that even mean?" Fabian asked his sister as Alfie, Amber and Nina approached them.
Camilla shrugged as she leaned down and pulled out her brothers' laptop to hand to him knowing it was going to be needed for their meeting. "I have no idea."
"you have no idea about what?" Amber asked Camilla as she elegantly sat herself down in front of the girl.
"weird, cryptic parent stuff," Camilla waved off the girl's question, hoping Fabian would get the hint to keep this a secret between them.
Alfie looked between the twins sadly knowing their parents being distant was a hard topic for them, especially when almost everyone else had very supportive parents. "Well, do you want to talk about it, or be distracted from it?" he asked them both with a grin.
"Distraction all the way!" Camilla laughed
"Perfect, Sibuna time it is then!"
Nina laughed as she assumed that was her cue to start the meeting and she looked at Fabian with a smile as he got up the zodiac photo they had gotten from Victor. "So each opposite pair of symbols equals one object, but that object could be anything or anywhere."
"yep." Fabian sighed as he looked at the picture.
"good this isn't going to take long at all," Patricia sarcastically commented as she wandered in and sat down with them all.
"At least there's only 7 reflectors." Nina tried to look on the positive side.
"and at least we get some help-" Fabian added knowing Camilla would continue on his train of thought as he focused on his laptop.
"-each item," Camilla spoke up for her brother with an eye roll, "will have the falcon on it, to represent Horus-"
"-so we will know when we find the right object's" Fabian concluded.
"you two haven't had a twin sentence sandwich in a while." Alfie laughed as he and Amber took a moment to process what the pair had just said.
"that is IF we find them," Amber spoke up.
"We have to find them," Nina instantly replied as if shocked Amber would even think they might not find them. "if we want to get to the mask first! And look, I think I already know what one of the symbols is." She turned to the laptop and pointed to the screen, "see that, it's a cupbearer..." she looked around everyone to see their blank looks, "The Cup," she added causing them all to realise she was talking about the cup of Ankh.
"But... I thought you said the cup of Ankh was in Vera's room?" Amber asked her friend.
"I didn't say this was going to be easy," Nina shrugged as s determined look crossed her face.
"why can't just one thing be easy?" Alfie groaned causing them all to laugh.
"The gods are involved Alfie, of course, its never going to be easy." Camilla laughed as she opened the front door.
"but once, how amazing if once it was," Alfie told her causing more laughter to come from her lips.
"Alfie Lewis. Camilla-Anne Rutter." The booming tone of Victor caused the sound to fall from Camilla's lips as quickly as if someone had snuffed a candle and the two turned around slowly to see Victor standing terrifyingly by the front door.
"Are you greeting everyone like this or..." Alfie trailed off looking around to see if anyone else had gotten in from school.
"No just the Amazing Alfredo and his Magical assistant." The man growled. Camilla not missing Victors hint about magic and knowing he was very angry with her about using real magic in their act or the fact she had told Alfie about real magic thus them using it in the act... it was one of the two.
"Hey Milly, Alfie..." Alfie and Camilla looked up to see Jerome coming down from the girl's bedrooms, "Victor... what if they let you smash something of theirs?" he offered trying to get his friends out of trouble. "that would make you, square."
Alfie nodded his head at this idea and Camilla just looked horrified she wasn't letting Victor smash anything of hers!
"We shall never be square!" Victor demanded, giving Nina a run for her money with dramatics currently. "this is none of your concern Jerome," he spoke to the boy waving him off. Jerome sent his friend's apologetic looks before rushing away down to hallway to his bedroom leaving them to their fate.
Victor held up two feathers in front of the pair.
"What's that?" Alfie asked confused, glancing to Camilla. She had no clue what Victor expected either. Honestly, she was expecting the whole toothbrush toilet punishment. It was a classic Victor loved.
"it is a feather duster," Victor spoke in a dangerously calm way. "I want this entire house cleaned from top to bottom... and feel free to use only your magic, Alfredo!"
"Vicky!" Camilla groaned as she took her feather, "our magic show was fine, well till the end."
"You don't have to be just fine. You have to be better than fine," Victor hissed at her before he turned on his heel and stormed up the stairs. Alfie glanced at Camilla confused but as she watched the man go, her shoulders dropped slightly. Victor was disappointed in her, once upon a time it wouldn't have affected her, but now that disappointment cut her to the core.
