Chapter 51: True Colors

May is sitting on the edge of the island in the middle of the lake with her legs hanging off of it. She staring at the water. She just had the most embarrassing moment in her life tonight at prom. And since she didn't know what to do, she ran out of there and teleported herself to the gazebo, ignoring Drew's call for her to stop.

May doesn't know if Drew will even like her anymore. That's why she left so suddenly. She felt embarrassed that Drew saw her covered in fruit punch. That's why she left. She felt hurt by the mean words that those girls said to her. And that's why she left. Some tears escaped her eyes. No one has ever treated her like that before. Everyone is always so friendly to her, because she's the Princess and all, but also because she's always friendly towards everyone as well.

May would never pick a fight with anyone. She would only try and stop fights. And those fangirls of Drew's made fun of her in front of the entire senior class. Her friends saw her like that. And everyone saw her. She's never ever been that embarrassed before.

May sniffles and cries some more into the lake. "How could...they say that?" May said between sniffles. "I...I...I'm not pretty enough...for Drew? And...I'm a...joke? And a laugh?" She sobbed, tears falling on her lap. "No one...is...ever that...m-mean to me."

After a moment of more crying…

"May."

May lifted her head up, hearing the voice of her fiancé coming closer to her. She could hear the footsteps on the grass path and she stands up, turning around to face Drew.

"May, can we talk?" Drew asked.

May pulled out her scepter and held it in front of her. "Don't come any closer to me."

Drew stopped at the end of the grass path. "May, I just want to comfort you."

"How did you know where I'd be?"

"The goddess told me." Drew answered.

May stared at her heart jewel. "Really, goddess?"

"Just let him talk to you." A voice in May's head said.

Drew took another step closer to May. May immediately looked up and fired a Love Beam at Drew's feet, landing it right in front of Drew. Drew froze.

"I warned you to not come any closer." May said.

"But May," Drew started. "It's me. Your fiancé. I just want to talk to you."

"Well. Well. Well I don't want to talk to you!" May cried.

Drew stared into May's eyes from where he is. "Why not?"

May didn't respond. More tears just fell out of her eyes.

"Please, May." Drew said. "I'm supposed to protect you, but those girls were too fast. I'm sorry I couldn't stop them in time. But I need to make sure you're okay."

"I'm fine!" May yelled at Drew angrily and almost instantly.

"But you're not." Drew watched more tears fall down her face. "Let me be there for you. I love you." He took another step closer to May.

"Even though I look like this!" May yelled instantly after Drew's sentence. Drew froze at May's yell. "There's punch in my hair and all over me, Drew! You're lying to me when you say that you still love me after what happened!"

"May-"

"I'm not lovable anymore, Drew! Everyone laughed at me!" May cried. "The girls said that I'm not pretty enough for you, so just go! You don't love me when I look like such a mess! Just leave me be!"

"No, May. Listen-"

"I said GO!" May cried, launching a Love Beam at Drew. Drew immediately dodged the beam by stepping to the right.

"May...if you want me to go...then I'll go." Drew said sadly. He turned around and started walking back down the grass path. "But just know that...I love you no matter what."

May watched Drew walk away and she shed more tears. ("Drew has...always loved me.") She thought. ("And I just...told him to go. I told him to leave me alone. I...pushed him away.")

("She really doesn't want to talk to me.") Drew thought. ("I just want to comfort her and make her feel safe. She should know that I would never laugh at her when something like that happens.")

("And...he would never make fun of me.")

"Drew, wait!" May called. Drew stopped walking and turned around. May's eyes widened. She could've sworn she could see his eyes watery and some tears sliding down his face. She lowered her scepter to her side. "You…" May started. "Really still love me even with punch all over me?"

Drew didn't respond for a while. Cue the music.

(This song is "True Colors" from Trolls.)

Drew started walking back towards May. "You with the sad eyes." Drew sang. "Don't be discouraged, oh I realize. It's hard to take courage. In a world full of people. You can lose sight of it all. The darkness inside you can make you feel so small."

Drew stood in front of May. He cupped her cheek and lifted her head up. "Show me a smile then. Don't be unhappy. Can't remember when I last saw you laughing. This world makes you crazy. And you've taken all you can bear. Just call me up," Drew used his thumb to wipe away some tears. "Cause I will always be there."

"And I see your true colors shining through." Drew sang and May's heart jewel glowed. "I see your true colors and that's why I love you." May gave Drew a small smile.

"So don't be afraid to let them show." Drew continued as his hand slid down from her cheek to her arm. "Your true colors, true colors are beautiful." He sang as his hand gently slid down May's arm slowly. Drew gave a slight smile. "I see your true colors shining through." Pink strings of lights came out of May's scepter jewel and started circling around them. "I see your true colors and that's why I love you." He took May's left hand in his. "So don't be afraid to let them show. Your true colors, true colors are beautiful."

"Like a rainbow." Drew sang. "Oh oh oh oh oh like a rainbow."

Drew slowly twirled May while singing, "Ooh can't remember when I last saw you laughing." May finished the twirl and faced Drew. "Ooh oh oh oh. This world makes you crazy. And you've taken all you can bear. Just call me up, cause I will always be there."

May's smile grew bigger. "And I see your true colors shining through." Drew sang, lifting his left hand and brushing May's cheek, tucking strands of hair behind her ear. "I see your true colors and that's why I love you. So don't be afraid to let them show." He sang as his thumb wiped underneath May's eye, wiping her tears. "Your true colors, true colors are beautiful. Like a rainbow. Oh oh oh oh oh like a rainbow." He sang, finishing the song and wiping all of May's tears away. The pink strings of light vanished into thin air.

"Drew, I-"

"Shhhh…" Drew placed a finger on May's mouth, hushing her and cutting her off. "Me first."

Drew lowered his hand to May's other hand, holding both of them. "I've told you this a lot of times before and I'll say it again. You mean everything to me. I would never ever make fun of you or laugh when something happens that everyone else laughs at. I wouldn't make a good husband if I did that." May blushed and smiled. "I always want to stay by your side. And I always want to protect you. What those girls did to you made me furious. And they actually thought that I'd change my feelings for you when they poured that fruit punch on you. But I didn't. If anything, I love you more today than I did yesterday."

"W-why is that?"

"Because you're beautiful on the inside and out. And I love you more with each day. That's something you can be sure will never change. I'll never stop loving you. The kindhearted, generous, lovable, caring, beautiful soul that stands before me."

May blushed. Drew lifted up her right hand and he placed a kiss on it, his mouth staying there for a few seconds. He lowered her hand and stared into her eyes. "I hope that you'll still want to be marry me." He said.

May smiled. "Of course I do." Drew smiled. "And now it's my turn. I want to apologize for yelling at you to leave when...I didn't want you to." Her smile faded. "I was just...so embarrassed for you to see me like this, a mess, that I wanted you to leave."

"I understand."

"I've never been so embarrassed in my entire life." May said. "What happened at prom...I felt so embarrassed and I saw everyone laughing at me and...that's why I left so suddenly. No one has ever been so mean to me before. And...I just didn't know what to do when they were all laughing at me like that…" her voice trailed off.

Drew wrapped his arms around her back and pulled her to him in an embrace. May felt Drew's warmth around her and she wrapped her arms around Drew's neck, enjoying the hug that Drew provided her. "It's gonna be okay." Drew said quietly. "I'll give those girls a piece of my mind. With your permission of course."

May smiled. "I'll allow you to do that this time."

"Thanks. I really want to tell them to not mess with my fiancé." Drew loosened his grip, letting May know that he's going to end the hug, but he felt May bring him even closer to her by tightening her grip on his neck.

"Please." May said quietly. "I'm not ready to let go."

Drew smiled and hugged her tighter again. "Then I won't let go."

May smiled and enjoyed the warmth of Drew's body on her. Whenever Drew is with her, she feels safe and protected. She knows that he'll always be there for her when she needs him.

Drew will not let anyone hurt May. He plans on keeping her safe for as long as they live. And that's a promise that he will never break.

Drew tightens his grip on May. "I love you." He said quietly.

"I love you too." May said softly.

It's now the first Monday of May after the prom that was the last Saturday of April. Drew decided to meet May at her castle before she left for school. And so Drew, May, and Kiara all rode in a carriage to school. When they exited the carriage and it left, they found themselves being stared at by many eyes.

"Umm...I think they're staring at me." May said.

Drew glanced at May and took her hand. "Let's go."

May looked up at Drew. "R-right."

May, Drew, and Kiara started walking towards the gang with many eyes on them. They all assume that it's because of what happened at prom. May looks around and sees some glaring eyes from girls.

May tightens her grip on Drew's hand. Drew could feel May's hand shaking. He glances at her. "Please calm down, May. I'm right here."

May looked up at Drew and smiled shyly. "Right…" she faced forward.

Drew looked around them at the many glaring eyes and he glared back at them. The girls got intimidated by Drew and they all looked away. Drew, May, and Kiara made it to the gang.

"You're here." Gary said. "Are you okay from what happened at prom?"

"Umm...yeah, I'm fine." May said.

"Well, just know that we have your back." Dawn said.

May smiled. "Thanks."

"Hi, Princess May." A voice said from behind May.

The gang all looked at who the voice belonged to. A familiar female to all of them.

"G-Gabriella?" May questioned, a little scared, thinking back to what Gabriella tried to do to get Drew together with her.

Drew pulled May close to him, wrapping an arm around her waist. "What do you want, Gabriella?"

"I just came to talk to May." Gabriella said. "Alone."

"If you need to talk to her, then you can talk to us too." Drew said. "She's not leaving with you somewhere."

"Fine. I just came to warn you, May. Drew will be mine and there'll be nothing you can do about it."

May stepped back a little bit in fear of the warning. Drew tightened his hold on May. "Just go, Gabriella. I'm staying with May and that's that."

"Oh, Drewy Bear, you just don't know the difference between beautiful...and ugly." She finished, looking directly at May.

May whimpered a little. Drew released May and walked towards Gabriella. He started getting more and more mad at her as he says, "You listen here, Gabriella. I'll never date a fan. I'll never go out with you. And I'll never think that May is ugly." Drew's voice kept rising as he walked forward with Gabriella walking backwards. All eyes turned their attention to Drew. Drew continued. "So you better leave May alone. She is more beautiful than anyone else who goes to this school. She is more talented and kindhearted than you'll ever be. And she is not a joke or a good laugh!" Drew yelled at Gabriella. "So you better stop bullying my fiancé. Stop calling me 'Drewy Bear'. And stop threatening May!" With that yelled, Drew stopped walking. Gabriella stopped afterward.

Gabriella never thought that she'd see the day when Drew would yell at anyone. Part of her felt hurt, part of her wanted to do what Drew said and leave them alone, but yet a bigger part of her wants to still steal Drew away from May.

"Do I make myself clear?" Drew asked angrily.

"Y-yes, Drew." Gabriella said.

"Good." With that said, Drew walked back to the gang. Everyone who just witnessed that all had their eyes wide at the end of Drew's yelling. One thing's for sure, they'll all be nicer to May after watching the show that Drew put on for everyone, because Drew heard some applause. He looked around and saw boys and girls alike, clapping and cheering for the way Drew stood up for May. The only person that didn't applaud was Gabriella. She just walked away angrily.

Drew walked to May and May opened her mouth to speak, but Drew pulled her into a hug before she could say anything. May decided to speak while they're hugging. "That was...amazing, Drew. I had no idea that you could get that mad at someone."

"I told you that I'd give the people that mess with you a piece of my mind." Drew said. He tightened his grip on May. "I won't let anyone else hurt you."

May blushed and wrapped her arms around Drew's neck. "Thank you."
