"Okay, this is it, unit B208." Curtis announces as he and Drew flash their flashlights across the numbers painted on the wall.
Drew rushes up to the door and puts his ear up to it. He pounds his fist on it a few times.
"Jo, Jo! Are you in there?" He screams.
Curtis pulls him back and holds up a finger to his mouth.
"Drew, man c'mon. We are supposed to be covert here. We have no idea what we're walking into." Curtis chastises.
"Curtis, I don't care, let Kim come after me. Jo has been missing for days and maybe Sam too. Who knows what Kim could have already done to them!" Drew exclaims furiously.
"Okay, okay I get it. But let me do my thing here, quietly." Curtis implores. He takes his lock picking tools out of his pocket and proceeds to go to work on the lock holding the door closed.
Drew turns his back to Curtis and begins his, 'look-out,' position. Curtis was right, they were technically trespassing, they didn't want to be attracting attention. Curtis' contact wasn't working the front desk at the facility right now, so if they got caught, they would have some very complicated explaining to do that they didn't have time for. Drew fidgeted with his fingers nervously.
"Are you about done? I thought you were good at this?" Drew taunts.
"Just about there. Almost. Ahh, got it." Curtis slowly took the lock off the door and placed it on the ground. He looks back at Drew and puts his finger to his lips, signaling to be quiet. Curtis then puts up 3 fingers and slowly counts down to zero before they both go charging into the room, Curtis first, with his gun drawn.
"Jo! Sam!" Drew cries. He rushes past Curtis to the two women passed out on the far end of the room. Drew kneels down and touches each woman. First Jo and then Sam, checking to see if they were cold or had a pulse.
"Thank God," Drew quietly mutters. "They're alive."
Curtis surveys the room and sees the empty water bottles, the cracker box and cores from the apples that were eaten.
"Well, it looks like she wanted to keep them alive. At least for a little while." He surmises leaning down and flipping one of the empty bottles. He then rushes over to tend to Sam.
"Jo, hey JJ, wake up." Drew coaxes rubbing her cheek sweetly. He runs her hand through her hair gently and kisses her forehead.
Jo quietly stirs.
"Drew?" Jo softly questions. "Drew is that you?" Jo, blinked her eyes open a few times. She thought she was dreaming or hallucinating. She was just wishing Drew would come bursting in and now he was here? She couldn't believe this was real.
"Yes, JJ, it's me. Oh, thank God!" Drew exclaims with relief. He reached down and held Jo tightly, kissing her on the cheek.
"I can't believe you're here. I thought you may have been dead." Jo muttered, sleepily.
"Dead," Drew chuckles. "Why would I be dead?"
"Because you went to get Deke." Jo responded flatly. A sudden jolt of energy washed over her. Deke! She had to find out about her brother immediately. She pulled back from the hold Drew had on her so she could look him in the eyes.
"Deke? Drew, is he….." Jo couldn't bring herself to ask. She didn't think she could bare it if he was really dead.
"He's alive JJ. He's really alive." Drew told her as he pulled her back in for another hug. Tears formed in Jo's eyes at the joy that her brother was really alive. She held onto Drew tightly and then she suddenly remembered the promise she had made to herself.
Abruptly, she pulled back from Drew.
She smoothed out her clothes and brushed the hair back from her face.
"I'm okay Drew. Really, I am. You should check on Sam." Jo retorted, moving away from Drew and slowly standing up.
Drew shot Jo a perplexed look but went straight over to Sam. Curtis hadn't been able to wake her up yet.
"Sam, hey Sam, it's Drew are you okay?" Drew sweetly stroked her cheek and gave it a gentle peck. Sam slowly moved her head and let out a low groan.
"Sam, Sam, wake up, please. Scout and Danny need you."
"Drew?" Sam questioned touching his face gently.
"Yeah it's me." Drew confirmed.
"Oh Drew! You found me!" Sam cried out softly and grabbed on to his neck tightly.
Drew wrapped his arms around her, squeezed her gently and stroked her hair.
Jo watched as Drew and Sam had their reunion. She fidgeted with her fingers and crossed her arms over her chest. She had to let them be happy as much as it hurt. Jo took a couple of steps backwards toward the door to be able to breath in a bit of fresh air. Just as she did, she heard footsteps approaching. Before she could turn around to see who it was, someone grabbed her arm and held it behind her back. She also felt something being held at her neck.
"What's going on here?" Kim seethed. She had wrapped her arm around Jo's neck and had a scalpel jabbing at her corroded artery.
Drew jumped up from where he was crouching and stood directly in front of Sam for protection.
"Kim! Let her go!" Drew insisted. "Let her go and you and I can talk."
Kim tightened her grip on Jo's neck, causing Jo to let out a painful cry.
"Kim, please!" Drew implored. "I know you don't want to hurt her." Drew held his hands out and took a few steps forward, trying to diffuse the situation.
"Oh, that's where you're wrong Drew. I do want to hurt her!" Again, Kim tightened her grip and jabbed the scalpel into Jo's skin slightly, causing a small wound that began to bleed. Jo whimpered quietly.
"How did she know we were here?" Curtis quietly muttered to himself.
"Oh, I have my own sources." Kim retorts. Curtis' eyes went wide, surprised she had heard his complaint. "I received a call to tell me that two men were acting very suspicious and hanging around my unit."
Thinking she was slightly distracted by Curtis' comment, Drew lunged slightly toward Kim. Kim flailed Jo around and wielded the scalpel as a signal for Drew to stand back.
"Okay, okay," Drew said calmly putting his hands up. "I understand, you are the one in control of this situation. Why don't you tell me what you want?"
"What I want?" Kim shrieked. "Don't you know, after all this time, what I want? I want you Drew." Kim sobbed as the words came out of her mouth. "I want our family to be together. I want us to be happy. I could make you happy, don't you see that? You never even gave me the chance to make you happy."
Slowly Drew took a few steps toward Kim as he calmly spoke.
"Kim, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry I didn't give you a chance. You're right. I can see that we could be happy together. Just you and me and Oscar."
Jo wrinkled her face up when she heard Drew talking about being a family with Kim. What was he talking about? Then she saw his face. She could tell he was just saying what Kim wanted to hear. He was trying to get the upper hand on her. Just then, Drew and Jo locked eyes, just for a moment. He darted his eyes to the right and Jo knew exactly what she needed to do.
Kim broke through the silence.
"I don't believe you! You're just saying that because I have Jo and I could kill her with a flick of my wrist." Kim sneered.
Drew continued to speak softly.
"No, no Kim. That's not true. I've had a lot of time to think about it and I know you are right. I haven't given us a real chance and I want to. I really want to." Drew retorted convincingly.
Kim loosened her grip on Jo slightly and pulled the scalpel away from her neck a bit.
"Really? You want to give us a chance?" Kim questioned in disbelief.
Drew nodded his head slowly.
"I do I really do." As he talked, he walked, closer and closer to where Kim was holding Jo.
"Now!" Drew shouted suddenly.
Jo immediately jolted herself free from Kim. Flailing her arm up to crack Kim straight in the face. Jo flung herself to the ground and curled up into a ball. At the same time Drew lunged toward the women. Once Jo had thrusted herself free, Drew launched at Kim and grabbed both her wrists. He wrestled the scalpel out of her hands and backed her up against the wall.
Curtis sprung into action as well, helping his friend confine the crazed woman.
"Jo, you okay?!" Drew exclaims.
"I'm good, I'm good." Jo responds and throws a thumbs up in the air.
"Curtis, do you have her?" Drew urgently asks.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm good. Go check on Sam." Curtis replies confidently.
Drew strides back across the room to make sure Sam was still conscious.
He gently helps her sit up and gives her his jacket for warmth.
"We're gonna get you out of here okay. You're going to be okay now." Drew assures her.
Drew pulls out his phone and dials 911. As he's waiting for the line to answer he looks over to Jo, who has been watching him. Their eyes lock together. Drew smiles slightly and mouths, 'nice job,' for their team effort to disarm Kim. Jo quickly smiles back then looks away. She didn't want to be sending a wrong message.
Drew turned his attention back to the 911 operator and attending to Sam.
Jo got up and slowly walks over to the doorway. She pokes her head out into the night air and takes in a deep breath. She was alive. More importantly, her BROTHER was alive. Her little brother, after all this time. She couldn't wait to see him.
