Series 2, Episode 66 ~ House of Hauntings
The Sibuna's were all crowded in the kitchen waiting for Patricia that evening as Amber explained to Alfie how they found the next reflector. Camilla using her brother's shoulder as a pillow as these days any opportunity to sleep she was taking, the bags under her eyes could be considered designer having their own bags. The boy patted her head gently causing the girl's eyes to flutter open just as Patricia wandered in looking around at them all apologetically.
"Where have you been?" Amber demanded without even taking a breath after concluding her story to Alfie.
"Amber..." Fabian hissed trying to get her to lower her voice. Vera and Victor were still up – the girls having seen the pair in Victor's office as they snuck downstairs.
"Guys we have a problem..." Patricia spoke.
Camilla groaned slightly, "you know I really hate those words all together in one sentence..."
The smallest of smiles flitted on Alfie and Amber's faces as they turned to look at Patricia – from her tone they knew whatever the issue was it was serious.
"What? Another one?" Alfie added, "I think we are reaching problem capacity!"
Patricia looked between the two who spoke before looking to Nina and Fabian as they were the only two who looked slightly worried at her words, "you will never guess who made an appearance on Joy's old video footage."
"Uhmmm..." Amber thought, taking the question as a real one and she tried to think who could appear on there genuinely. Causing Camilla and Fabian to look to one another bemused slightly.
"Senkhara!" Patricia hissed the worry in her tone evident. If she was appearing in the footage the spirit was stepping up her game which meant the Sibuna's weren't the only ones to targeted anymore – the Anubis house residents as a whole could be.
Camilla's head dropped into her hands as she let out a deep sigh computing the fact. More people were in danger and it was all their fault. She had no clue how to protect the whole house, she was barely scraping by keeping the Sibuna's in one piece.
"I would not have guessed that!" Amber spoke up as everyone around her looked shocked at the news Patricia had just broken.
Nina glanced at Camilla and saw the stress building in the female twin's expression, knowing the Camilla was taking this to heart and was going to try her best to now protect them all. "Patricia," she turned back to the girl wanting more information – the last thing they needed was The Protector spreading herself too thin, which might be why the spirit was upping her haunts. The burn out the magic-user who had thwarted her once already. "are you sure?"
"yes! I recognised her from my dream." Patricia spoke nodding her head. "you know when she stamped me..." Patricia looked at Camilla too, the girl had not lifted her head though Fabian had put a hand on her shoulder and was rubbing it reassuringly, "and Eddie's already worked out she's a ghost." This caused Camilla's head to whip up as she looked at Patricia in horror.
"What?!" she hissed at her friend in a panic.
Patricia sighed as she looked at Camilla knowing the friendship that had formed between herself and Eddie was almost sibling-like. The two really appreciating the bond and the fact he could be in danger was worrying her as much as if Fabian was in danger.
"Well she is, isn't she?" Alfie asked the group confused.
"that is exactly why we don't want to broadcast it," Fabian told Alfie as he put an arm around a now very stressed out Camilla and tried to comfort her. "can you talk him out of it?" He asked Patricia, "eh, tell him ghosts don't exist... or tell him Jerome was messing around?"
Patricia rolled her eyes at the male twins' words, knowing that would work with Eddie. One of the things that attracted her to him – other than the annoying hero complex she knew he had deep down – was his stubbornness. He kinda needed it in perusing her.
"you just need to tell him anything other than the fact that it is the ghost of Tutankhamun's murder hanging around for a mask..." Fabian concluded.
"Eh, don't you think I've tried that?" Patricia countered, "he has just spent the last two hours trolling through the DVD's, voluntarily."
This caused defeated groans from them all. Eddie was already stuck on the idea. It take a lot more than them saying ghosts don't exist to shake him now.
"Voluntarily?" Amber repeated quietly causing a nod from Patricia. "okay this is bad."
"And he's shown it to Mara..." Patricia quietly added.
Camilla's teeth clenched together as she computed this information. This was bad for two reasons. First; As much as Camilla wasn't the girl's biggest fan, it meant that the girl was in danger and Camilla wouldn't stand for that. Second; there was a reason why the girl got in trouble with Vera over the article. She was a journalist. She discovered the truth, and she was very good at doing so. Between Eddie and Mara, the Sibuna's had to now watch how they approached this situation because it needed a very find hand otherwise all their secrets would be exposed.
"Exactly..." Patricia responded to all their groans. This wasn't going to be some easy fix. This was going to need all of them working together to maybe resolve it somehow. "And she wants to write an article on it!"
"Of course, she does..." Nina groaned.
"You know what, if my day gets any worst, I think I'm gonna have to find out if hell's having some kind of exchange program," Camilla mumbled into Fabian's shoulder as she used it to lean her forehead on trying to process all the information.
Fabian knew it was the wrong time to laugh but he couldn't help it at his sister's comment. Fabian's laugh caused some of the stress to leave Camilla as she looked up at him and a smile crept onto her face. Least they were in this together and Camilla wasn't alone. It was one of the few things that were constant in their lives, no matter the problem the twins could always fix it together.
There were the sounds of people opening the living room doors and the Sibuna's dived for the kitchen cabinets to hide under.
"So, do you believe in ghosts Mara?" Came Eddie's voice. Clearly, the duo causing Camilla significant worry where on a ghost hunt that evening.
"I'm a journalist," Mara countered the boy in her no-nonsense tone, "I believe in the truth. Whatever that turns out to be." If the girl ever found out about Magic Camilla hoped she was ready with a camera on hand- she just knew it be a great photo to have. "Right...the video was shot from here," Mara sounded like she was taking charge of the situation, "over there, but I figure if we set up in the corner, we can get the whole living room and the dining room as well."
Camilla glanced to her brother to see he had in the identical look of frustration on his face. They now had to find a way to sneak around cameras because of the stupid spirit bitch. Great. Just great.
"Does this still count as human interest?" Eddie's voice came along with the creaking of a tripod.
"Absolutely. I never said they had to be alive." Was Mara's response, no one was surprised to hear the small scoff off Patricia and Camilla couldn't help but smile slightly. It did sound a little like flirting. Someone had to remind Mara she was with Mick. Though that could just be her Jealous brain talking.
"right."
"Yeah."
There was a momentary pause before they all heard the sounds of footsteps come towards the kitchen causing the Sibuna's to huddle closer knowing that they were going to be caught at any second. As if Camilla deity had heard her future mage's cry to not get caught and planted the thought in Mara's head, the girl suddenly hissed, "what are you doing?"
Causing the footsteps to stop just outside the door.
"what? Every stake out needs food." Came Eddie's response, which on a normal day would have caused a laugh from Camilla. Only Eddie could think about food whilst ghost hunting.
"Afterword's Eddie," Mara instructed, in a tone that caused the boy to know better than to argue. "set up the equipment first. I am not writing this article on superstition and conjecture."
"no, I was thinking more like chips and dip."
"Eddie!"
"Fine... who made you the boss of the world," the American boy groaned and the Sibuna's collectively let out sighs of relief as they heard his footsteps walk away from the kitchen door. That had been a close call.
"Okay, first we need to review the footage again..."
Camilla decided to take one for the team and she slowly lifted her head to see into the living room area, Fabian following her actions a few seconds later, followed by the rest of the Sibuna's. They all could see Mara and Eddie on the couch, both with headphones in looking at the footage on Mara's laptop.
"Now, let's go..." Nina whispered to them all, pushing Alfie and Fabian to the fake oven, leaving Camilla and Amber to watch a very angry looking Patricia staring at the scene.
"Trish..." Amber hissed, causing the girl to look at them both, before nodding her head and following the Sibuna's down to the cellar.
"I mean, who does she think she is?!"
Camilla had been loving Patricia's rant about Mara as the Sibuna's wandered through the tunnels. She knew she should have but honestly hearing someone say what she had been thinking (since she had figured out her feelings for Jerome) was a breath of fresh air.
"I'm the one who order's him to work for me!" Patricia continued to tell them all. Missing the look between Nina and Fabian but seeing the grin on Camilla's as the girl took her arm. "not her!"
"Ghost hunting is kind of romantic," Amber admitted as they walked into the task chamber, "It did bring Alfie and Me together." She added with a smile to the boy in question. "isn't that right Alfie?"
"yeah, but it also drove us apart!" Alfie, being the boy he was missed the subtle hint of Ambers as he tried to reassure Patricia that nothing was the matter with the scene happening in the living room.
"Mara is in the wrong, she has a boyfriend. Admittedly half-way across the world, but she still is with Mick," Camilla told her friend who smiled at her. Glad someone was on her side.
Nina and Fabian were placing the next reflector onto the hand as the group were having this conversation, amused looks on their faces. "Cam..." Fabian spoke up causing them all to look towards the pair. "magic light?"
"Coming right up," Camilla smiled, holding her hand to Nina who looked at her strangely, "I have a hunch I want to figure out..." Nina shrugged and took the girls hand before the two looked up at the ball in the centre of the room, "repeat after me," Camilla instructed holding her free hand up to the ball, "Cum in tenebris, lucem detrahet me,"
Nina slowly raised her own hand and copied Camilla's words, "Cum in tenebris, lucem detrahet me,"
As the two chanted Fabian couldn't help but let out a small excited laugh as he saw their joint hands have an orange glow, before looking to the two extended hands of the girls, it was almost as if Nina was borrowing magic from Camilla. The ball in the centre of the room glowed before a concentrated beam of light fell down onto the first reflector before bouncing onto the second.
The two stopped their chanting and broke their connection causing the light on the ceiling to slowly disappear as well.
"It works!" Nina excitedly spoke up as she turned to look at the Sibuna's with Camilla by her side. "but we're defiantly going to have to do this during the day when there's more light,"
"We can't rely entirely on Camilla." Fabian agreed with her causing Camilla to pull a face at her brother who laughed slightly.
"is it me or is the moon moving?" Nina asked as she looked at the wall opposite her, causing them all to look her way with confused looks as to what she was on about.
On the wall was what they had all thought was just a mural of a moon and stars, to go with the constellation theme, but the moon itself seemed to be on some kind of mechanism and had defiantly moved since they had first come into the task chamber.
Fabian pulled out his phone as they all wandered to the wall for a closer look, "yeah, yeah it's moved." He told them all as he showed the picture on his phone of the wall from their initial trip into the task chamber. "it's like the moon is moving to eclipse the sun..."
"What happens then?" Patricia asked them all, "we lose?"
"Whatever happens it means we have to find all the reflectors and fast," Nina told them missing the glance between the twins. Eclipses weren't a good thing in Egyptian mythology and this wasn't just put here by Frobisher for no reason.
Amber pulled out her phone to look at the photo of the zodiac once again, "what's this one with the mutant lollypop?" she asked turning to show it to Nina, Fabian and Camilla.
"that's the symbol for a child," Nina told the girl.
"No –"Fabian corrected her instantly, "its doll."
"really?" Nina said not appreciating Fabian's correction, "I thought since it was opposite the eye it meant like a child's glasses or something."
"No," Fabian shook his head slightly looking to Camilla to back him up. Camilla glanced at the symbol and nodded her head. With the help of her fancy new hieroglyph tattoo, she read it as a doll.
"it means doll, for sure." Camilla agreed with her brother causing an irritated eye roll from Nina but other than that the girl didn't say anything. This was practically what the twins grew up around they did have a slight advantage.
"but the reflector can't be a doll," Fabian sounded confused as he looked around at the Sibuna's, "they are plastic, or the ones Cam had anyway where..."
"plastic but could still do some damage," Camilla teased causing a laugh from Patricia as Fabian put his hand to the back of his head as if remembering some long-forgotten argument where Camilla had thrown one of her dolls at him.
"so," Fabian continued, "maybe it means dollhouse windows?" he suggested.
"no," this time it was Nina who corrected him with an excited smile on her face, "the riddle doll." She turned to Camilla who gasped in understanding.
"it had glass eyes..."
"It was in the attic," Nina turned to the rest of them to explain excitedly, "and then Victor took it, I think, but not the face. The face broke off when I dropped it!"
Amber let out an uneasy noise, "eh, hate to rain on the parade, but, was that right before Trudy chucked everything that was in the attic?"
"NO!" Nina dramatically spoke up in despair. "if the eyes been trashed then there's no way, we're ever going to finish the task." She hysterically spoke.
"look, we'll check the dollhouse first," Fabian spoke in a rational manner trying to calm down the girl, "then we'll proceed to panic."
Patricia looked around as if something had caught her attention, "guys... I can hear voices from in here."
They all paused as the faint muffling could be heard, "yeah..." Amber agreed as they moved closer to the sound to realise, they were hearing Eddie and Mara in the living room.
"its Eddie and Mara," Amber realised, "this must be the living room."
"what are the conditions?" Mara was heard saying.
"well, most are found in attics and cellars," Eddie answered the two clearly still talking about this ghost they where hunting for. "Fail."
"whats second?" Mara asked.
There was a pause where Camilla to literally hear Eddie's mind as it whirred to life, "they come out in the dark!"
"is that a fact?"
"How can a million movies be wrong?"
"you better stay close; I'm scared of the dark."
"Hey, she's flirting with him!" The words left Patricia's mouth before she could stop it and rightfully so. Mara might have meant it in an innocent way but boy did it not sound like it.
"She just said she's scared of the dark..." this caused all the girls to look to Alfie as Patricia said what they were all thinking.
"Subtext..."
There was a reason it took all but throwing yourself at a boy to get them to understand flirting sometimes. Boys where dumb and Alfie just proved it to them all.
"TURN THE LIGHTS BACK ON!" Patricia screamed at the pair causing very different reactions from all the Sibunas. Nina put her hand over Patricia's mouth, with Alfie and Fabian looking at each other with wide shocked eyes. Amber and Camilla however were having to cover their own mouths to stop themselves from laughing. The two understood Patricia's frustrations better than anyone else. Mara had literally gone after Amber's boyfriend the year before, and though Jerome wasn't dating Camilla – Mara wasn't exactly stopping his flirting even though she was in a relationship.
"What was that?" came the petrified voice of Mara.
"I don't know."
"It sounded as if it said to turn the light back on. So, turn the light back on!"
"you want to do what it wants?" Eddie hissed at her.
"I do, I really do!"
There was a pause as the Sibuna's all concentrated on the voices, "so do you believe me now?" Came Eddie's voice.
"Okay, but we don't have to be here though. Right?" came a panicked Mara. "the camera is running we can check it in the morning."
The only two Sibuna who weren't angry with Patricia where Amber and Camilla, and the girl was more than happy to stick next to them as they hurried into the girl's bedroom. "Real smart Trixie!" Alfie heatedly told her.
"Sorry guys," Patricia said though she didn't sound very sorry. In fact, she was rather proud of herself for scaring Mara the girl deserved it for her flirting, at least in her mind. "I honestly don't know what came over me."
"The Dollhouse!" Amber exclaimed excitedly as from inside Nina's wardrobe the house lit up giving them all a welcome distraction.
Nina let out a gasp as she ran to the doors, grabbing the key from on top and unlocking it, "please Sarah!" she spoke up, "tell me that the doll is still here."
Fabian helped her open the house and they all looked inside. The dolls had moved once again. "the entrance hall..." Fabian observed.
Nina didn't need to be told twice and she was out the door, Camilla on her heels after an exasperated look to her brother. The American girl was on a mission and Camilla was hating all the running around.
They weren't alone as they wandered into the entrance hall, Camilla being the first to notice Jerome lurking by the front door. Jerome turned as Nina spoke up though his eyes landed on Camilla who was giving him a curious look.
"Okay, everyone spread out. It has to be here somewhere." Nina instructed before pausing as she followed Camilla's eye line to where Jerome stood by the front door, "Hey Jerome... are you okay?"
"what has to be here somewhere?" Jerome countered as Nina, Fabian and Camilla moved down the stairs.
"my... nothing..." Nina went to lie but gave up knowing whatever she was going to say Jerome would see right through it. "where are you going?"
"Nowhere." Jerome instantly spoke up. Causing all of them to give him suspicious looks this time as the rest of the Sibuna's made their way down the stairs, all of them gathered at the bottom with Camilla stood in front of them all. "just a casual stroll around the school grounds."
"dude it's a little late for an evening stroll," Alfie spoke up.
"I agree," Jerome smiled a little forcefully at him. "which is why I can't spend another second speaking to you people. Good night." With that, he walked out the door.
"Let's just find that doll..." Nina moved past Camilla whose eyes were on the door.
From behind her Fabian gave her a small push towards it causing her to turn to him. "somethings up... he'll talk to you." The boy whispered.
Camilla glanced at her friends then back to her brother, "5 minutes max, I promise." She told them before running to the front door and slipping after the boy.
Jerome hadn't made it far. In fact, he paused as he heard the running on the stones behind him, turning to see Camilla as she ran up to him panting. Her breath seen in the cold night – she wasn't dressed for being out in the evening weather so he hoped she didn't manage to worm her way into going with him.
"Jerome..." she gasped glad he stopped so she could catch up.
"Milly, I really have to get –"
"What are you really up too?" the girl interrupted him getting to the point.
Jerome looked at the girl, drinking her in. everything he was doing he was doing to protect her from whoever this Collector was.
She was small, so small that's why she always wore heels in some way to give her some hight, with a now tamed mane of dark chocolate brown hair, thanks to Amber, who's natural curls flowed down her back though her hair still grew frizzy in humid weather (if her summer holiday pictures where anything to go by). Her nose was off centre and her eyebrows were thick when she came back to the school after the hols due to the fact, she always forgot to maintain them when Amber wasn't around. She chewed her lip when she was nervous, she went silent when she was hurt and she always had a foot was tapping, as if there was always something to do or somewhere to be and she was ready to get going. But she smiled from her heart and that smile made all the difference in Jerome's mind. The girl who stood in front of him was lion hearted and unique in her own way – his feelings for her were so muddled that even he didn't know how to pinpoint them. The only thing he knew for certain was he couldn't lose her; he didn't think he would be able to handle it.
He took a step forward and cupped her cheek in his hand as he whispered, his voice breaking as he did, "I really wish I could tell you... but right now I need you to trust me, in the way that I trust you."
Camilla looked up at the boy as she put her hand on his. In the moonlight, she could see his eyes gloss over as tears threatened to fall but she knew they wouldn't. She didn't have to say anything as she nodded her head, for once not pushing the boy even though every fibre in her body was telling her to do so, she didn't. Jerome asked her to trust him and trust him she did.
"go back inside, your shivering with the cold Mills," Jerome told her softly before stepping back and turning.
Camilla's hand dropping to her side as she watched his retreating figure almost blend with the darkness before she called, "wait, J!"
The boy instantly turned at her call, looking at her intently.
"I'd better see you at breakfast, or there will be hell to pay."
Jerome let out a small laugh, though in the quiet of the night Camilla could hear it from where she was. "I promise to have your tea ready, Lady Milly," he told her.
She let out a small weak chuckle but nodded her head as the boy gave her one last look, eyes darting over her face as if memorising it before turning and letting the darkness take him from her sight.
Fabian looked up as a shivering Camilla slipped in through the front door, shaking her head before shrugging as if to say 'whatever it is he's up too, its nothing to worry about'.
"enough guys..." Nina sighed missing Fabian and Camilla's exchange, and calling off the search. "there's nothing here."
"Nina's right." Patricia agreed as Fabian pulled off his jumper and threw it at his shivering twin who gladly accepted the warmth as she pulled it over her head. "there is zilch, zero..."
This caused them all to sigh as they tried to understand why the dollhouse told them to search there. What exactly where they missing?
