Bell

Her own phone chimed just as the flashing red and blues of the collected police and fire vehicles started to filter through the trees. "What an ass-whipping of a scene," muttered another tech as he trudged past Kagome back toward the site of the murder. He was already sweating with the effort of lugging his equipment.

Kagome leaned against the nearest trunk, bracing herself for what was sure to be a furious voicemail from the captain.

Her heart leapt to her throat when she heard the sound of running instead. A woman let out a soft cry at the same time as the distinctive sound of a phone hitting hard ground. "Shit," said a voice. It wasn't Sesshoumaru. "Come on. Leave it. They're getting close." Footsteps receded and then were followed by others. The recording rolled on and on until it went silent. An automated voice announced that it had been received three hours ago, around when she and the others had found Moryomaru's body.

Inuyasha. She started when she realized whose voice that had been. He'd been fleeing - with his pregnant wife, no less. Kagome remembered the tight grip he'd had on that battered sword when they met. He'd been hiding then at Sesshoumaru's suggestion, but he'd been ready. She only hoped Inuyasha had won his fight.

She began to climb toward the lights again. She'd call in a welfare check on them through the local department and make sure they were taken somewhere safe.

Her foot caught, and she went sprawling. Her phone skittered across the forest floor. "What the…" Kagome twisted around to see what she'd tripped on, letting out a gasp when she saw red and blue lights flickering across a pale face with laughing eyes.

"Good evening, Detective," said Byakuya as he reached for her.
