Running back through the door, I'm faced with a bleeding Connor, clutching his nose.
Eyebrows raised, I look around him as he spits words at me.
I don't hear, nor do I care. I'm looking for Edward.
"Get out my fucking house, bitch!" Connor calls in my direction as I brush past.
I intend to.
Edward is on the sofa, right where I left him, everyone watching him with wide eyes, terrified of his next move. He's acting as though nothing is out of the ordinary.
Stopping in front of him, I wait for him to look up, for his eyes to meet mine.
"Where did you go?" he asks, voice low.
"Outside," I answer, deciding not to tell him that I planned on leaving. Not that he bothered to chase after me. "What did you do?" I ask, but he doesn't answer verbally. Reaching out, he grabs the back of my thighs and pulls me close, opening his legs to accommodate me, dropping his head to rest against my stomach.
I'm so shocked by his display, that I indulge him. Everyone watching, no one moving.
Playing with the hair on top of his head, not wanting to touch the part of him Connor was just touching, I let him have this moment of vulnerability.
"You need to stop with the games, Edward."
He nods against my shirt, not looking up. "I'm trying," he sighs. "I'm getting better."
"You are?"
Nodding again, his hands move against the back of my thighs. I try to ignore what his touch does to me. "I elbowed him in the face."
I groan. "Why?"
"Because he was making you uncomfortable. And he wouldn't take a hint."
"Violence, Edward? Really? You could have just followed me."
"Violence is all I know …"

Is Edward always the bad guy in their story, or is Bella missing a few key signs?
