'Shifting' is where the fighter switches the lead foot as they deliver a punch - a fighter gets more power with a punch from the back foot (but it's slower because it has a longer way to travel). Shifting transfers that power to what would normally be the fighter's lead hand.

Shifting

"Ugh, a big mess just walked in," muttered someone. "Houshi, it's your turn. You're not doing anything anyway."

Miroku blinked out of his reverie and frowned at the tanuki that sat a couple desks away. "I was at a homicide scene half the night, Hachi."

"That means you'll just have more incentive to usher him out the door," said the demon with a grin.

He glanced over to the far end of the bullpen, where said "mess" stood, yelling something about an abduction to a group of uniformed officers that ringed him. Standing with a groan, Miroku grabbed his notepad along with his coffee before he began to wind his way across the crowded floor.

Miroku could hear him grumbling as he walked up. "Isn't there someone with two brain cells that I can talk to? How can you…" The voice broke off, and a silver-haired head popped around the shoulder of one of the patrol officers. Golden eyes narrowed at the detective.

He stopped. "I'm Detective…"

"You're not Kagome," said the man. Two soft ears twitched on top of his head, and Miroku tried not to stare at them. "You smell like her though."

He knew he was tired if he couldn't even conjure a comeback to that. "Detective Higurashi is my partner. And you are?"

"Inuyasha Taisho." He nodded as Miroku suddenly became very awake. "Yeah, Sesshoumaru's brother. Where's Kagome?"

"She's not in yet. We had a long night." He had, anyway, on account of Kagome abandoning him in the middle of the woods with a dead guy.

Inuyasha's eyes flicked up to the clock on the wall that read nine-forty. "She normally this late?"

Miroku felt a stir of concern. "Not usually, no. What's this about?"

"I was afraid of that. Listen, we got a big problem."
