Don had left this morning to go to Manchester and spend time with his family. The departure of her friend upset Evelyn a bit, especially since she wasn't going to see him until December. He had to spend time with his family for the remainder of July while she was going to her dad's for the whole month of August. While they had two good weeks of spending time with each other, Evelyn did crave more.
To her luck, she wasn't left alone after Don left. Sirius and James had shown up to keep her company. As much as they could be annoying at times, the two boys were the people who could make her laugh the most and always knew how to have fun.
Sirius and James had left after four while her mum and Ezra had returned from work. What pleased Evelyn, even more, was that Alphard had joined them for tea. So, now, Evelyn found herself having tea alongside her mum, her godfather and Ezra. However, the conversation wasn't going as swimmingly as it did when Alphard was around. It was because her godfather hadn't partaken much in any conversation they had.
He was too busy looking down at the floor with his eyebrows creased and his lips pouted. It didn't take a genius to see that her godfather wasn't in a good mood.
"Alphard..." She called as she put the tea on the coffee table. "Are you alright?" Her mind immediately started to wonder if his condition had worsened. Maybe the healer had told that he had less than one year and a half to live.
The man looked up to her and nodded his head. "Yes, yes. I'm fine."
"Fine?" Her mum repeated. As soon as she said those words, Alphard tensed. "You used to say that fine is the bottom line of the emotional scale. The scale goes from great, good, okay, not okay, depressed and at the end of it, was fine."
Alphard shrugged his shoulders. "Have you ever thought I could change my mind?"
"Even if you did change your mind, it's all written on your face," Evelyn spoke up making her godfather glance at her. "So, is everything alright? Is your health okay?" At the thought of Alphard's health deteriorating more, she found her chest start to ache as her heart beat fast.
"No, no, no." He mumbled. "My health is normal. Well, normal for me." Evelyn shifted. "It's just I ran into someone from my past."
Ezra frowned. "Someone from your past?" He repeated.
Alphard sat upright and sighed. "An ex of mine." He informed them. Evelyn found herself being intrigued by the information. Her mum had told her that Alphard was a bit of a womanizer.
"The one you broke up with because of your illness?"
He nodded his head. "Yes, I didn't expect to see him."
Evelyn blinked a few times. She wasn't sure that she had heard it right. "Him?" She repeated.
At her question, Alphard let out a sigh before he snapped his fingers. "Oh, right, you don't know." He turned his eyes on her. "My ex is a man."
"Yeah, I gathered that," Evelyn muttered. She would have never thought that Alphard was gay. Her mum's stories had told her that Alphard liked the company of women a lot. Maybe a bit too much. "But mum told me that you used to date a lot of girls." Had all those girls been a cover?
"Oh, yes, I did." He smiled in triumph making her mum roll her eyes. "I'm attracted to women as well." Evelyn frowned at his words. She didn't know that was possible. "I think the correct phrase is bisexual." Evelyn nodded her head as she tried to remember the phrase.
Before she could ask him more questions about his sexuality, she was reminded that he had run into his ex-boyfriend. "Why did you break up with him again?"
"Because of his illness." Her mum responded instead of Alphard. Evelyn's eyes widened and she turned them to her godfather.
"Why would you do that?" She questioned him and he shrugged. "Did he want to break up with you?"
"No, but I had to do it." Alphard breathed out. "And it wasn't just because of my illness, Rose. I could never bring him to this world. He's a muggle. It would only endanger him, especially since I have family members who have joined Voldemort."
Her mum was about to speak up, but Ezra beat her to it. "He's right." They all glanced at the man. "It would be dangerous." Alphard hummed, but his face was still one of displeasure.
Evelyn pressed her lips together. She didn't know what to think of what her godfather had done. While she understood letting this man go, she couldn't help but think of his happiness. Alphard had sacrificed his happiness. He had let go of a person who would have made his remaining years better. Evelyn was sure she wouldn't be able to do it. She would never sacrifice her happiness for someone else.
Her thoughts got interrupted by the doorbell ringing. She turned to look at the corridor and wondered who it was.
She was about to get up, but Ezra stopped her. "I'll get it." As she saw him rush out of the room, a sinister thought crossed her mind. Could it be a Death Eater ringing their bell? WIth Ezra being an Auror and her mum's family background, it could easily be one.
Evelyn's throat went dry and she chewed on her lip. When she glanced at her mum and Alphard, she noticed that they weren't bothered at all. Were they unaware of the danger? Or was Evelyn worrying for no reason?
When she heard a familiar voice, Evelyn realized that she had been worrying for no reason. She let out a deep breath and relaxed on her chair. It took her a while to realize that the voice belonged to one of her friends.
She got up from her seat and walked in the corridor. Talking to Ezra was none other than her friend, Christina. Her friend who was supposed to be in South Korea.
"Chris?" Evelyn called.
Christina turned to her and offered a small smile. "Hey, Eve." She greeted her as she walked up to her. She noticed that her friend was holding her trunk. "I hope you don't mind me showing up earlier than planned." When Christina said those words, Evelyn couldn't help but notice her eyes flicker. She knew that her friend had come here for a good reason.
The reason for Christina's surprise appearance had been a mix of boredom, pressure and annoyance. Boredom came from being stuck in a farm where she had to work all day and not have time for Quidditch. While both pressure and annoyance came from her family constantly telling her she was too westernized. It seemed like Christina had this problem with both her Korean and Japanese families. They both thought she was becoming more British than Korean and Japanese.
"I won't lie and say that there's no truth to it. I know I'm a bit westernized, but I don't get why my family is so obsessed with it. Why can't they just let be me?" Christina had told her the night she had arrived. "I'm not going to be pressured to be someone else. Nor am I going to pretend."
Three days had passed since her friend had arrived and her mood had improved. Evelyn wanted to say it was because of her, but that would be a lie. Christina's improved mood was due to Quidditch. Since she had come here, she had been playing Quidditch with James and Sirius. Now, Remus and Peter had joined them too. This left Evelyn alone for most of the time.
She was sitting by the pool, reading the book Sirius had gifted her. As she was reading it, she heard them decide to take a break.
"I'm not going to play again," Remus grunted as he took a seat next to Evelyn. "I'm an awful Quidditch player."
"So is Peter. That doesn't stop him from playing." James pointed out. His comment made Peter scoff at him while Sirius laughed.
"Yes, but Peter enjoys it. I hate playing it." Remus stated.
Christina scoffed as she grabbed a water bottle. "How can you hate playing Quidditch?"
"People can hate things you enjoy, Chris," Evelyn spoke up as she put the book down. All the others turned to look at her. "I despise playing Quidditch too."
"Yes, I noticed that," James murmured. "I begged on my knees for you to join us and you refused." He narrowed his eyes at her. The reason why James had been so adamant was that he wanted them to be three on three. "However, it does bring up a question. What do you do for fun?"
"She probably reads, studies and researches," Sirius answered instead of her. She pressed her lips as she looked up to him. "After all, it's the average hobbies for a thirty-five-year-old." Every one of them laughed, except her.
Evelyn got up from her seat and cleared her throat. "Since you are all so curious, we can do something I do for fun." She smiled at them. "We should go to the city's cinema."
The Marauders, except Remus, frowned at her. "What is a cinema?" Peter asked.
"A cinema is a place where new films are played," Evelyn explained to them. "It's a theatre of some sorts with seats and all, but instead of a stage, there is a huge screen that plays the film."
James' eyes widened. "Aren't films those long hour moving pictures?" She nodded her head. "Then we should go!" He announced as he grinned. "It will be such an exciting experience."
Evelyn was glad of James' enthusiasm. It seemed like it was making everyone think it over. "To make it more interesting, we should watch a movie that is rated above our age."
Sirius' eyes lit up. "Now, you're speaking my language." He pointed his finger at her and she smiled.
"Is that even going to work?" Remus wondered. "I've never been to the cinema, but some muggle places are very strict."
"You never know with cinemas. Some of them are strict, some aren't." She answered him. "Don't worry though. I will convince the ticket seller."
"Will that work?"
Evelyn chuckled. "Of course. I'm known for always finding a way to get what I want."
Her comment made Christina snort. "No wonder you almost got sorted in Slytherin."
When Christina said those words, you would have thought that lighting struck the four other boys. They were so silent for the longest time that it made the girls look at them. When their eyes landed on the boys, they noticed that all of them had open mouths and wide eyes. It was as if Christina told them that Evelyn had killed a person.
The blonde girl found herself uncomfortable under their gazes. She looked away for a brief second before looking back. She regretted it as soon as her eyes met Sirius. There was a coldness in his grey eyes that made her shiver.
"Why are you all frozen?" Christina retorted making Evelyn drop her head down. "Did you get petrified-"
Before Christina could finish her sentence, Sirius interrupted her. "How come you were almost sorted in Slytherin?" His tone was colder than ice.
Evelyn shifted as she looked up. "Well, in the Sorting Ceremony, McGonagall put the hat on my head-"
"Don't joke around." He snapped. She blinked a few times at his words and tone.
"What the bloody hell, Sirius?" Christina got up and moved closer to her. "What do you mean by 'how come'" Christina mocked his voice. "She almost got sorted in Slytherin, but the hat thought she was a better fit for Ravenclaw."
"Why?" James asked. While his voice was softer than Sirius', it still held some harshness to it.
"Because the hat thought I had some traits of Slytherin," Evelyn informed him. Her answer made all the boys flinched. She didn't have to guess what they were thinking. They were thinking of her as evil. It hadn't gone unnoticed to her that the Marauders hated Slytherins. Although, she wouldn't have thought it ran so deep. "Is there something wrong?"
"No, of course, not." Remus jumped to answer. From the faces of three others, it definitely brought problems with them. "We were just quite shocked."
Evelyn didn't believe him, but she didn't say anything. No one said anything. The six teenagers fell into an uncomfortable silence that made Evelyn's skin crawl. She couldn't even talk about their plans in the evening. No one could.
When she heard her mum call her and Christina to eat, Evelyn wanted to jump in delight. She would have no obligation to stand in such an uncomfortable situation anymore.
"Well, we have to go." She mumbled. Remus was the only one who acknowledged her words. The other Marauders seemed to be in too deep thought. "We'll meet at six outside the gates. We have to take a bus to the city."
Remus nodded. "We'll be there." He assured her.
After Evelyn and Christina bid them goodbye, they turned around and started to walk towards the mansion. Behind her, Evelyn could hear the Marauders leave as well.
"That was awkward," Christina whispered.
"You don't say," Evelyn muttered before turning to her friend. "Did you see how Sirius looked at me? You would have thought I had murdered someone in cold blood."
Christina rolled her eyes. "Oh, please, Sirius is a bit dramatic."
While Evelyn agreed with her friend, she hardly believed that flair of dramatics played a role here. "No, Chris. I'm pretty sure that he hates me now."
"Who cares?" Her friend scoffed. "It's just one person."
"A person I consider a friend." Evelyn reminded her friend as she bit her lip. "Although, right now, he must see me as evil." She breathed out. "I wonder if I can make him like me again."
Christina stopped in her tracks and turned her body to face her. "Does that even matter now?"
"Of course, it does." She frowned at first. "I don't want to be disliked or hated."
Her friend tilted her and scrunched her lip at her answer. At that moment, Evelyn realized that she had slipped. She had let a part of her true self be revealed to Christina.
Christina hummed. "I didn't know you had such a need to be liked by people."
"I don't." Evelyn lied to her friend as fast as she could. "I just want to be liked by my friend." It was untrue of course. Evelyn enjoyed being liked by people. Being liked by people would make her image grow and it would help in her career. In politics, it was necessary to be liked by people.
"Sure, you don't." Christina drawled before she walked away. Evelyn cursed under her breath before she followed her best friend towards the house.
"Would you stop being so dramatic?"
Sirius stopped pacing and glanced at Remus. "I'm not being dramatic." He snapped at his best friend. "My reaction to this whole situation is quite rational." The four of them were in the drawing-room of the Potter Mansion. His best friends were all sitting on the sofa while he kept on pacing.
"You're making it seem like she committed a crime." Remus breathed out.
He scoffed. "Being a Slytherin should be a crime on its own." He declared making James and Peter laugh. He ignored his friend as he plopped on the armchair. "But her being an almost Slytherin is a slap on my face."
"It's quite ironic." Peter quipped. "The girl you fancy almost being sorted in Slytherin." He let out a laugh. Before it could worsen, Sirius glared at him which made Peter shut up.
"I still can't believe it," Sirius muttered as he ran his hand through his hair. "How can she even be a Slytherin?"
"What do you mean by that?" James wondered out loud as he cleaned his glasses. "Thinking about it, Lynn is quite ambitious and driven. Both those traits are associated with Slytherins."
Sirius sighed. "Being ambitious and driven are fancy words to describe blood supremacy." Remus and James both frowned at him. "And I'm talking about how she's perfect."
He had met a lot of outstanding people in his life. The Potters and Dumbledore were the first ones to come to mind right behind Evelyn. The moment he had laid eyes on Evelyn, he knew that she was different. It didn't take long for her to prove it to him and everyone else. In the first week, she had proved that she was out of this world. In the following school years, she had proven to be some sort of gift from heavens.
It was odd, but the girl had some sort of power in her. She was the perfect human being. Most of the school liked her, everyone knew her and she had friends in all the houses. She was intelligent, beautiful, kind, charming and friendly. To his surprise, she could be mischievous and funny as well. He had first seen it in the first year when she had spilt water on Damian Avery's pants. That was the day that Sirius had started crushing on her. It was also the day that it was proved to him that Evelyn Sinclair King was the perfect girl.
These past few weeks, she had been brightening his days with just her presence. Whenever she smiled, he was sure he would drown in that smile. Whenever they talked, he was sure that he could talk to her for hours and not get bored.
Yet this recent news had left a bitter taste. A bitter taste that could sour the presence of Evelyn in his life.
"You still think she's perfect?" Remus' question brought him down to earth.
"Of course. You don't."
He shook his head. "Not after finding out that Hart talked to her." Sirius shifted at the mention of the man. Their conversation still haunted him. "There must be something that she's hiding. After all, we all know that she hasn't told her friends or boyfriend. There is a reason for that."
Sirius frowned. He couldn't even think of something wrong with her. He had always had a wild imagination yet he could come with nothing.
"What if it involves her boyfriend?" James spoke out of sudden. "What if her deep secret involves Rabastan?"
"What do you think it could be?" Peter asked.
He shrugged. "Something Death Eater related. Maybe she knows he's involved or maybe she's involved as well. It will explain why she almost got sorted in Slytherin."
Remus rolled his eyes. "You too, James?" He sighed. "You have to get this notion of all Slytherins being Death Eaters."
"Well, all suspected Death Eaters are Slytherins." Peter reminded them and Sirius hummed.
"Yes, and it's rumoured that Voldemort has way more people working for him," Remus argued. "The possibility that he had people from other houses is high."
Sirius got up and started to pace again. "I don't think Lynn is a Death Eater. From what I've gathered, she's very against them." He thought about James' other guess. "I'm also not sure that she knows everything about Lestrange. Whenever she's around, he acts as if he's an angel."
"Do you really think she has no idea?" He could hear the doubt in James' voice. "Lynn is smart. She rarely missed things."
"She misses what she doesn't see," Sirius muttered. "Plus, compared to his friend, Lestrange does come off as the saint of his group." Sirius knew that it was the opposite. In school, it seemed like Avery or Rosier were the leaders of their group. However, from his childhood, Sirius recalled that Lestrange was. He was quite sure that Lestrange led while the others followed in private. "In a few of my talks with Lynn, I'm sure that she doesn't even know a quarter of his real self." He pressed his lips together. "I should warn her in these upcoming weeks."
"Warn her?" James laughed. "So, you could get with her?"
Sirius scowled at his best friend. "Do you think that low of me, James?"
"You don't have the best morals, Sirius," Remus muttered. "You sometimes like to bend them to achieve your means."
Sirius pressed his lips together. Out of all his best friends, Remus was the goody-two-shoes. It got in his nerves most of the time and it had led to many arguments between them. He knew well that Remus thought he was the most good-hearted while he thought Sirius was the most cruel-hearted.
"Don't worry, Remus." He assured his best friend. "When it comes to telling Lynn who her boyfriend truly is, my crush on her hardly matters."
"What does then?"
"Her life," Sirius responded. "If she continues her relationship with Lestrange, she will endanger her life."
At exact six, she and Christina had met the four boys in front of the gates. All of the boys had gone for outfits that were more muggle-looking than wizard-looking. Evelyn was sure that Remus was to be thanked for that. The other three boys didn't have much knowledge about muggles.
As they walked towards the bus stop, she noticed that James, Remus and Peter were warmer with her. They seemed to have forgotten all about the truth behind her sorting. She wished she could say the same for Sirius. The boy was doing his best to keep his distance from her.
It worried her, but it also stung her a lot. She had been enjoying Sirius' company these past few weeks. Maybe more than the other boys and Christina.
The bus ride was about ten minutes. To her luck, the Marauders kept their cool. They didn't question anything that looked strange about it. They seemed to know how to adapt to the muggle world. She wished she could say the same about other wizards and witches.
Soon enough, the six of them stood before the cinema. At that moment, James and Peter got a bit taken off guard. However, it could easily be explained that it was their first time in the cinema.
Evelyn spotted a boy behind a box, looking at some newspaper. She approached him and he looked up. He was a fair-skinned boy with mousy brown hair and browner eyes. When he looked up at her, he flashed her the best smile. It did no effect on Evelyn. He was nowhere as handsome as her boyfriend.
"Hello." She greeted him.
"Hello." He tilted his head. "What can I do for you?"
"I'm wondering what kind of films are playing tonight."
The boy leaned over the box. "Well, you have Nashville, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jaws."
"What kind of film is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?"
"About a man who is mentally ill and is taken to a mental institution." Something about his answer made Evelyn's body shiver. At first, she was confused to why she reacted that way, but she was reminded of both her grandmother and Gabriela's mother. She didn't know if she could handle a film like that.
"And Jaws?"
"A horror film about people being attacked by sharks." He answered her. "Although, it's not meant for the faint-hearted."
"Lucky for us that we aren't faint-hearted." She motioned to the five behind her.
He inspected the people behind her. "The cinema has also ruled the film to be only watched by people older than eighteen."
Evelyn tried her best not to smile. "Again, we are so lucky. All of us are eighteen."
"There's no way the short boy is eighteen." He whispered to her. She hoped that Peter hadn't heard him, especially his comment about his height.
"He is. He just had a babyface." Evelyn lied as she leaned closer to him. "How about me? Do I look younger than eighteen?"
"You, actually do." She gaped at him. "What? I thought birds liked to be told that they're young."
"Women at the age of forty or fifty liked to be told they look young, not the ones at the age of eighteen." She told him and he nodded. "So, six tickets for Jaws?" She batted her eyelashes and tilted her head.
He stared at her for a minute. His stare led her to smile at him.
"Six tickets, right?"
Evelyn beamed. "Yes."
She handed him the money and the boy handed her the six tickets. she thanked him. She walked away from him and showed the tickets to her friends.
"When does the film start?" Christina asked her.
"In fifteen minutes," Evelyn answered as they started to walk inside the cinema. "We should get some popcorns. Maybe three servings?"
James frowned. "What are popcorns?"
"Popcorns are corn kernels that expand and puff when heated." She explained to him. When they entered the cinema, she spotted the machine a few steps ahead of them. "Those are popcorns." She turned to him and saw that him, Peter and Sirius were all looking at them with interest. "I don't think I can hold three buckets on my own. So, how about four of you go to our assigned seats while someone comes with me to get the popcorn?" She was about to turn to Christina to ask her to come, but James jumped in.
"Sirius will come." He declared. Both she and Sirius frowned at him. She even noticed Sirius glare at him. "Won't you?" James tilted his head as he looked at his best friend.
Sirius' jaw twitched. She gulped down and cursed James. She didn't know why he thought Sirius accompanying her would be a good idea. She was sure that he disliked her now.
"Of course," Sirius said through gritted teeth. She handed Christina four tickets before she and Sirius walked towards the popcorn machine. She ordered three servings and the two of them had to wait for them.
The waiting made Evelyn want to run. Both of them remained quiet which was very awkward. Not just because of what happened during the day, but also because she and Sirius were both talkative people. They had never stayed silent in the presence of each other and Evelyn liked it that way. She liked talking with Sirius.
The silence continued even when they were making their way to the auditorium. Evelyn hated every moment of it, yet she said nothing. If he wanted silence, she would give him such. after all, there was no reason she needed to be nice with someone who was disgusted by the fact that she was almost a Slytherin.
Maybe Christina was right. Maybe she didn't need to worry about being liked by Sirius. Would it bother her not to be liked by him?
When they walked to their seats, they saw that their friends had already settled next to each other. James had taken the first seat, Peter the second, Remus the third while Christina was sitting on the fourth. She had hoped that she wouldn't be close to Sirius during the film, especially when he was acting like this.
Evelyn didn't voice her displeasure. She took her seat next to Christina while Sirius took the seat next to her. After handing the popcorn to her friends, she settled down and realized that she would also share popcorn with Sirius. It was as if she couldn't escape this.
The film started after a few minutes. It didn't take long for all of them to be wrapped in the plot. During the course of the film, there were many mentions that the film was set around Evelyn's birthday. Apparently, the boys had been unaware that the fourth of July was Independence day for the States.
As the film went on, Evelyn found herself jumping at some scenes while squirming at some others. She didn't like the death of the boy. It almost made her vomit.
The scene where Evelyn lost her cool was the one where the shark attacked the boat that had come to capture it. Seeing the shark devour one of the men on the boat, made her gasp and shudder. Without thinking, she reached out for the hand closest to her.
Sirius turned to look at her and she realized that she was holding his hand. She was about to move it, but his question stopped her. "Are you scared?" He muttered.
"A bit." She whispered. "Disgusted too."
He snorted. "You can hold my hand if it makes you feel better."
The softness in his voice took Evelyn back. Since afternoon, his tone had been cold and harsh. The contrast between his tones was so big, Evelyn didn't know what to feel. However, she knew what to say.
"Thank you," Evelyn told him and he nodded his head. After that, he turned his head towards the screen and she followed in his suit.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry." She repeated as she put the ice bag on Sirius' hand. She had bought in a store after the film had finished. He hissed as the ice touched his knuckles. "I didn't mean to squeeze it so hard." A few seconds after her and Sirius agreed on her holding his hand, there had been an explosion in the film. It had scared Evelyn so much that she had squeezed Sirius' hand tight. Tight enough to cause damage. She pressed the bag and he pressed his lips together. "I didn't expect that bloody explosion to happen."
The six of them were riding the bus back home. She had taken a seat next to Sirius. Remus and Peter were sitting together, whispering to one another while Christina and James were debating about Quidditch. Since there a few muggles, they were pretending they were debating over soccer.
"It's okay, Lynn." He assured her. "James' mum used to be a healer. She'd probably give me something to get rid of the pain."
Evelyn shook her head. "What if I broke a bone? Or what if I damaged a nerve?"
"I've broken bones before, Lynn. I can assure you that it isn't a broken bone. I doubt that you damaged my nerve too."
She sighed. "Hopefully, not. James would think I'm hurting one of the Gryffindor Beaters to win the cup."
"That would be very Slytherin of you."
When Sirius said that, she almost dropped the ice bag from her hand. She should have known that would come up again. His hand had almost made her forget all about it.
"Do you think I did it for that?" She looked up to him and met his grey eyes. She was sure that she had never seen such intensity in a pair of eyes like she saw in Sirius'.
Sirius scoffed. "No. It was just a jest."
"Was your behaviour today towards me a jest?" He puckered his lips at her question, but he didn't answer her. "Are you that disturbed about me almost being sorted there? Do you dislike me now?"
"Of course not." He told her. Her shoulders relaxed at his answer. At least now, she knew that he didn't dislike. "I'm just generally wary of Slytherins."
"Why?"
"Because of recent events." He answered.
Evelyn didn't believe him. There was something about Sirius' behaviour towards Slytherin that indicated a different reason. A reason regarding his family. All of the Black family had been sorted in Slytherin. All of them, except Sirius.
"I understand that, but that still doesn't mean they are all bad." She whispered to him. "For example, do you think Lucinda and Emma are bad people?"
"To be honest, I don't know them at all and they are Quidditch rivals."
"Alphard?"
"The exception, not the rule." He quipped as he looked out of the window.
"My mum?"
"Same as Alphard."
"Merlin?"
"A man with such power must have dome horrible things." Evelyn rolled her eyes. She could see that Sirius was stubborn. It made Christina look compliant compared to him. She had to play other cards to convince Sirius about this. "It's funny though."
"What's funny?"
"You mentioned Merlin and two girls in our year and yet you said nothing about Rabastan. Why is that?"
She shrugged. "Because I know you don't like him." It was the truth. With other people, she would have mentioned Rabastan. She was aware that there was no fondness between Sirius and Rabastan. They always hated each other. Rabastan had told her it had been like that from a young age. "Why would I try to prove my point by mentioning him?"
The bus stopped and Evelyn realized that they had arrived in their destination. She let go of the ice bag and Sirius kept it on his knuckles with his right hand. The two of them exited the bus with their friends. After entering their neighbourhood, Evelyn turned to him.
"So, what do you think of Slytherin?"
"The house of evil."
Evelyn scolded at him. "So, you think evil resides in all Slytherin house?" As she thought more about his words, she realized that Sirius thought that his family was evil as well. She guessed that it was all that blood supremacist and bigotry that made him so disdain towards them. "That's a short-sighted thought."
The two of them were close to the Potter gate. His friends had already entered the estate and Christina had approached their gate. "Why?" They stopped walking.
"If you think Slytherins are only capable of evil, you don't know much about our history." She turned to face him. "You can find goodness in Slytherins just as much as you can find evilness in the other houses."
"You really think that?"
"I know that." She stated as she raised her chin. "After all, it's written all over our history books."
Sirius looked at her but didn't say anything. It seemed like he was mulling over what she said.
"Eve! Hurry up!" Chris called from the gate.
"I'll be there in a second!" She informed her friend before she turned her attention to Sirius. "I hope I didn't cause any long-term damage."
"If you did, you owe me a favour." He told her and she smiled. "Goodnight, Lynn."
"Goodnight, Sirius."
The two of them separated after their goodbyes. Sirius entered his best friend's estate and Evelyn hurried towards the gate. As soon as she approached Christina, her friend started to talk about the film as if Evelyn hadn't been there. Evelyn half-listened her as she thought about her conversation with Sirius.
While she could be quite convincing at times, she doubted that her words dug deep with Sirius. It was clear to her that his issue with Slytherin was more about his family than anything else. She doubted that a few words would change his mind., especially with how stubborn he was.
She and Christina entered the house. When they did, Evelyn heard her mum whisper to Ezra. "They're here." She gripped her best friend's arm and Christina turned to her. "What am I going to tell them?"
"The truth, Rose," Ezra mumbled. "They need to be there for their friend."
As soon as those words left the man, Evelyn's heart leapt. She walked towards the living room where she found her mum and Ezra on their feet. She noticed that her mum was shaking. It didn't take long for Evelyn to shake as well.
"What happened? Why do we need to be there for our friend?"
Her mum breathed out. "A letter arrived when you two left." At that moment, Evelyn noticed her mum was holding the letter. "Apparently, last night, Gabriela's mum passed away."
