Chapter 46
'Congratulations Dr. Mitchell, Dr. Grey.' Webber said.
'Thank you sir. We weren't going to tell anyone, so if you don't mind keeping this between the three of us, that would be much appreciated.' Amber told the older man.
'You have my word. I will not tell a soul. I want to. This type of news should be shouted from the rooftops.' Webber said. 'Congratulations to you both again. Now get back to work. We have a meeting this afternoon. Don't forget!'
'Got it sir.' The women stood to leave. Amber held the door open for Lexie.
'I can't stop smiling. I'm still in shock. I still can't believe it happened.' Lexie said grabbing Amber's hand.
'I know! I'm so happy that it did though. I'm so excited for this new chapter in our lives. So, I'll see you in a little bit. I'm watching a surgery with Callie this morning and we are catching up a bit. I love you…Mommy.'
Lexie smiled at being reminded of her new favorite title. She loved being a doctor, but being Mommy was more fulfilling than she could have ever imagined. 'I love you. I'll see you later.' Lexie placed a kiss on Amber's lips. Amber turned to head to the elevator and Lexie started towards the ER. They had been smiling ever since Vegas. It was hard not to.
Amber stopped by the coffee cart before she reached the gallery where Callie was already sitting and waiting for her. They had not had too much time to really catch up. 'Hey Cal, I got us some breakfast. Gotta keep those babies fed.'
'Thank you! I am starving. I'm starving all the damn time. These two are taking a lot out of me.' Callie accepted the scone and took a huge bite out of it. She was thankful that it wasn't pumpkin.
'So what's going on?' Amber asked getting comfortable in the gallery seat.
'Tim was in town last week. We got the twins' rooms set up. All of the swings, bouncers and whatevers put together. The house really came together. He was a huge asset to us.'
'That's awesome! I've always liked Tim. He's going to make someone very happy one day. When he meets that right person.'
'Definitely. Ok, so I have to ask. It's bothering me. Look me in the eyes and answer me truthfully. Did you and Lexie get married?'
Amber had to laugh at her friend. 'What would make everyone think that? The intern at the party was dead set that we got married too.'
'Did you?' Callie probed.
Instead of responding, Amber smiled. She needed a minute to gather her thoughts. 'Marrying Lexie would be one of the easiest decisions I would ever have to make. She brought me back to life. She's given me this happiness and security that I thought I would never have again. I was nervous that she wouldn't accept that I come as a package deal. She doesn't have any kids. She is younger than me. She's different from anyone I've ever been involved with. I was hesitant to commit to a relationship at first. She broke down my walls. The walls I built up so quickly. I was hurt so badly. I didn't think I deserved love. But she kept calling and she kept coming over. She was really interested in starting something with me. She's not only built a relationship with me, but with Maci and Riley. She opened her arms and embraced all parts of me, my life. No, we didn't get married. I'm not ready to do that again. Not yet.'
'So what was with the expensive champagne and the big party?' Callie asked.
Amber's pager went off. 'We had a little more than Lexie's birthday to celebrate. We won some money in Vegas and we just splurged. I'll tell you all about it later. I gotta run. Oh! How close are you to figuring out your artificial cartilage?'
'I'm almost there.'
'Good. I believe in you, Callie. See you later.'
Callie nodded. She understood the call of the pager. She sat back in the gallery and watched the rest of the surgery.
Callie and Arizona had a thirty-two week appointment to see how their twins were growing. They were very fortunate that they worked in the hospital. Callie had also gotten paged not long after Amber for an emergency surgery. She got out just in time to rush up to the maternity floor to meet with Addison. Arizona was having an equally busy morning and they both met in the elevator slightly out of breath.
'How's your day going?' Arizona asked.
'Busy. I almost didn't make it out on time. Yours?'
'Same. I hope everything calms down a little bit. I have had enough excitement for the day. You ready to see our little angels?'
'So ready. We are so close. They'll be here before we know it.' Callie wrapped her arm around her wife and pulled her close. 'I love you.'
'I love you more.' Arizona said.
'Impossible.'
'Don't try to argue with me Calliope. I'm right and I'm awesome.'
'And so modest.' Callie chuckled.
They got off the elevator and were shown into an exam room. 'You know the drill. The gown is on the bed.' the nurse said dryly before shutting the door.
'Grumpus.' Arizona said.
'Did you just call her a grumpus? Is that even a word?' Callie asked as she changed into the gown and got up on the exam table.
'I don't know, but she was a grumpus.'
'Stop saying grumpus!'
Arizona stepped in between Callie's legs. She placed her hands on Callie's knees and leaned in close to her face like she was going to kiss her. 'Grumpus.' she whispered softly.
Addison opened the door and walked in. 'Ladies… I hope I'm not interrupting anything.'
Arizona backed out from between Callie's legs. 'Not at all Addison. I hope you are not a grumpus today too.'
'What the hell is a grumpus?' Addison asked.
'Don't ask. Can we just see our babies please?' Callie said.
'Oh yes! I wanna see! Hook it up Addison!' Arizona said excitedly.
After their appointment, Callie and Arizona had to rush down to the meeting that Webber had scheduled for the day. They were able to squeeze through and find a place near Amber and Lexie who were lost in their own world as usual. They could see the two women whispering to each other. Amber had her arm around her girlfriend and was stroking her thumb on her side.
The main hall of the hospital was filled with doctors, nurses, and everyone in between. Webber took his place at the top of the stairs. 'If I could have your attention everyone…' he started. He waited awhile for the room to settle down. 'Thank you all for being here today. I know we are busy saving lives here so I will try to keep this as brief as possible. As you know, we are a teaching hospital. I am happy to announce that we have moved up in the rankings and are now number three in the country!' The room erupted in cheers and applause. Once the room was settled down again, the Chief was able to continue his speech. 'This is good for a few different reasons. The main reason being that the hospital will be able to get additional funding that we will use to help ensure that we are sending more doctors out into the workfield that are better equipped and have a better understanding as to what they are doing in the operating room. I have one additional announcement today that I am very excited about as well. We have recently had a very large anonymous donation come to the hospital in the amount of $20 million!'
The room once again erupted into applause. Small conversations broke out between the doctors. They all wanted a piece of the donation money. Amber and Lexie shared a big smile and a kiss between themselves. It didn't go unnoticed by Callie who had just happened to glance their way, remembering what Amber had said to her earlier that morning. 'Settle down, settle down!' the Chief bellowed from the stairs. 'This money came in with some conditions. We are to use the money for a trauma and prosthetics clinic. We will be working with the Wounded Warriors, pediatric amputees, and people who have lost a limb due to a traumatic accident, illness, whatever the case may be. Some of our trauma, pediatric, and orthopedic attendings will meet to come up with what we will need in order to get this clinic up and running. I am very excited with what this will do for our hospital. Thank you all for your time. Now get back to saving lives people!'
Callie grabbed Arizona's arm and cornered Amber and Lexie in the hall before they could leave. 'Exactly how much money did you win in Vegas?'
Amber and Lexie looked at each other and smiled. '$25 million.' Callie and Arizona's jaw dropped.
'And you didn't just want to take the money and run?' Arizona asked.
'We could have, but we are doctors. Doctors who took an oath to help people. What better way then our own clinic? We can still be surgeons. We will still be working within our specialties. We will just be running things.' Lexie explained. 'Your names are on it too.'
'What do you mean?' Callie asked.
'The owners of the clinic... Amber Mitchell, Lexie Grey, and Callie and Arizona Robbins-Torres.' Amber said pointing to each woman as she said their name.
'So you're saying that we own part of this hospital?' Arizona asked.
'Yes we do.'
'And you two are millionaires?' Callie asked.
'Yes we are.'
'Wow. This is unbelievable. This is why you asked me about my cartilage research?' Callie asked.
'Partly. Don't stress too much about it. You will figure it out. Like I said, I believe in you. We can still get the clinic running without that part being perfected. You have more important things to worry about, like babies and stuff. We still have to design and renovate the area. Webber said we could have the old free clinic. It was shut down years ago and the space is just there. We have time. It probably won't be open until after the twins are here. No rush.' Amber said.
'This is amazing!' Arizona exclaimed.
'You two come over later. We will celebrate.' Lexie told the other women. 'We have to get back to the ER before our pagers start going crazy. See you later!'
After ringing the doorbell, Callie and Arizona were greeted by a very comfortable looking Amber. She had her hair up in a messy bun and an oversized tshirt that was hanging off of her shoulder and a pair of short shorts. She had a can of whipped cream in her hand.
'Where did you go with that whipped cream?' they heard Lexie yell from the back of the house.
'Did we interrupt some sexy times?' Callie asked.
'Huh?' Amber asked before understanding how the situation could have been interpreted. 'Oh…no. We are making ice cream sundaes. Come in.'
They entered the kitchen where Lexie and the kids were sitting around the table. There was a full spread of different ice cream flavors, candies, cherries, and other ice cream toppings. A real ice cream buffet sitting out in front of them.
'Callie…Zona! I am making a sundae with Mommy and Mama!' Maci beamed.
They didn't miss the smile that Lexie had on her face as soon as Maci called her Mommy. 'It looks delicious big girl. We were invited to have some ice cream too.' Arizona said.
'Come sit! We have chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. I have strawberry. Mama has chocolate. Mommy and Riley are having vanilla.' Maci said.
The women sat down at the table. 'I like chocolate and strawberry.' Arizona told the young girl.
'Have both!' she had a solution for everything.
After both kids crashed from their sugar high, they were put to bed and the adults gathered in the living room for a drink before Callie and Arizona headed home.
'Today was really unbelievable. You two are pretty amazing for doing this for us. For the hospital.' Callie said.
'We were stunned when the alarms started going off at the casino. We put the money in the machine never in a million years thinking that we would actually win. We spent so much time just in shock. It was unreal. Then we fantasized about what we could do with the money. We talked about all the vacations that we could take. The experiences we could have with the kids. But we wanted to help people also. So, we came up with the idea of the clinic and who better to work with than our best friends?' Lexie said.
'We still have more money than we will ever need. We just wanted to give back. We didn't need all that money. We were fine living off of our salaries. I didn't grow up with a lot. It's surreal right now that I can go out and buy a damn yacht if I wanted to.' Amber said.
'Well, growing up with money isn't as great as you might think. We had to attend parties with people that thought their shit didn't stink just because they had money lining their pockets. The snooty attitudes, the fake smiles. Ugh! That was always my Dad and sister's lifestyle. I couldn't wait to get out of it.' Callie said.
'Here's to the success of our future clinic…whatever it shall be called.' the women raised their glasses and clinked them together. The future was looking pretty sweet.
Now we know the big news. I'm excited about this story arc. If you have any suggestions for the clinic's name or anything else you want to see in the story, let me know. Also, when are the babies coming? *Coughcough*nextchapter*Coughcough* Excuse me... had a little something in my throat. lol. Thank you all for reading.
