Author's Note: Ok I promise I've almost reached the bottom of y'alls prompts XD
This one is from Universebumps 24:
"You can do a double date with Alex and Kelly
Might be fun"
Indeed it might be let's give it a try.
Also, um... I may or may not have (totally) added William and Kara in, too. Oooooops...
Summary: Alex, Kelly, Brainy, Nia, William and Kara go on a triple date
Spoilers: You need to know about Alex and Kelly and William and Kara, I guess XD
"I must admit, I've never seen the point when multiple couples go on dates simultaneously and yet are not all together," Brainy said as he and Nia pushed through the Friday evening crowd at the alien bar and looked around for their friends. "Isn't the point of a date to have quality time with your significant other? Does the fact of other people being there rather... negate that?"
Nia bit back a smile, not wanting Brainy to think she was laughing at him. "When you put it like that, I guess it does," she admitted. "It's just... fun, you know? To switch things up. You could think of it like a couples hang-out instead of a date, if that's easier for you."
She spotted Alex and Kelly a few table spaces away from them and took Brainy's hand, tugging them towards the girlfriends. "Hey guys!"
"There they are," Kelly greeted with the giant smile she usually wore. "Welcome to my favorite couple."
Alex sent her a look that looked vaguely ostrich-like.
"Besides us, of course," Kelly amended, shaking her head. "Sorry honey; I kind of thought that was implied."
Nia laughed and slipped into the booth, Brainy moving in after her. They might have to rearrange seats once Kara and William arrived, because Brainy wasn't a fan of being stuck in between two people with no clear exit, even if he was with his friends.
Alex checked her watch. "William and Kara are officially late," she declared.
"New couples are always late," Kelly reminded her.
Brainy nodded thoughtfully. "Yes..." he agreed. "You two were the prime example of that not one short month ago. Well... regular length month, I suppose."
Alex and Kelly both blushed a little but the latter just shrugged and went with it. "You and Nia never hit that stage."
"No," Nia agreed. "Because Brainy is worse than my mom was when it comes to getting us out of the apartment on time."
Brainy scoffed. "I distinctly remember allowing us an entire three minutes to kiss in the hallway that day that we-"
"Whoops!" Nia cried, having 'accidentally' spilled some water out of one of the glasses that Kelly and Alex had ordered before they'd arrived. "My bad."
Brainy was quick to grab his napkin and sop up the small puddle of water before it could drip off the table. "It may be my... naturally suspicious nature, but I daresay you did that on purpose," he said, squinting at her and balling up the sopping napkin.
"You don't say," Nia rejoined, rolling her eyes a little.
"Hey guys!" The sound of Kara's voice made all of them look up. Kara and William were making their way towards the table, hand in hand.
"Is it just me," Nia said, leaning over to Kelly, "or does Kara look a bit disheveled?"
Kelly smothered a laugh behind her drink and everyone squished together to let the new couple in.
"Sorry we're late," Kara said, fixing her glasses and smiling over at William. "There was a unforeseen robbery a few blocks away and I had to go be bulletproof for a second."
"That's the story, anyway," Kelly muttered to Nia, who was unable to resist a snort of laughter.
"I'm pretty sure all robberies are unforeseen, at least for the people not doing the robbery," William commented, grinning a little. He glanced around. "Wow, this place really draws a crowd on Friday. When we came for karaoke it wasn't this full."
"It's First-Round-Free Fridays," Alex rattled off, reaching for a drink menu. "Besides, most people actually hide from karaoke night. You just happen to be a part of a group that wholeheartedly embraces it."
"I happen to remember my karaoke experience being quite a good one," William replied, smiling at Kara. She blushed happily.
A purple-skinned waitress with eyes located closer to her chin than her forehead approached them. "How's it going everybody?" she asked pleasantly. "You all thought about your order yet?"
"Round of shots, please," Alex said.
"And an order of fries," Nia added with a grin.
"A burger would be great, too. All the toppings," Kara put in.
William raised his eyebrow at her after the waitress had walked off. "We had dinner before we got here."
"Yeah, and then I fought crime," Kara reminded him blithely. "Super-speed equals super metabolism, remember?"
"And I just like fries," Nia declared happily.
Alex looked between the two of them. "We could have gotten dinner," she said slowly. "Everyone said that drinks worked better."
"Drinks do work better," Kara told her. "But eating and drinking works best."
The round of shots came first, closely followed by the fries. Nia put her head on Brainy's shoulder as she munched on the fried potatoes. "Hey, you're being pretty quiet tonight," she said in a low voice. "Everything okay?"
"Indeed," Brainy confirmed, his eyes skirting between the Danvers sisters as they fell into their usual playful banter. "I am merely processing."
"Processing what?" Nia questioned, holding up a fry for him to eat.
He took it obediently and chewed for a moment. "Processing how much time has passed since we were like Kara and William, and wondering how much time will have to pass until we're like Kelly and Alex."
Kelly, overhearing, looked over and smiled. "I don't know Brainy; you and Nia have a pretty great relationship. I think you give Alex and I a run for our money. Besides, you've known each other longer."
"That's true," Nia agreed. "Though we've had our ups and downs since then."
"Indeed," Brainy repeated. He tilted his head so his eyes could fall on his girlfriend. "I would say we are currently in an 'up', however."
"And I would agree with you," Nia said with a smile.
"What about Up?" Kara asked, leaning in to catch their conversation. "I rewatched Up last week." She let out a sigh. "It didn't hold up to the test of time."
"I didn't think it was terrible," William said with a shrug. "Granted, I rather enjoy animated children's movies."
"Of course you do," Alex said, shaking her head.
William looked bemused. "What's the supposed to mean?"
"She just means that you are so perfect it's sometimes hard to believe," Kara told him with a pat on his arm. "And I would agree with her, except I completely believe it."
William gave her a quick kiss and then stood up. "Just gonna pop off to the bathroom," he excused himself. "I'll be back."
"Have fun," Kara called teasingly after him.
Brainy frowned. "That does not seem like the appropriate phrase to tell someone heading to the bathroom," he said.
"Yeah, that's what makes it funny," Alex replied with a snort, and took a shot. "Are we getting more of these or what?"
They ended up ordering some beers instead of shots in the hope that Alex might not get too drunk that evening. Kara ate her burger and Nia chomped on fries, and soon they were all digging into the lava cake with spiked chocolate fudge that the alien bar's dessert menu was so famous for. The conversation moved from superheroes, to CatCo, to a reporting project Nia was working on, to a case of Alex and J'onn's, to things at the DEO, back to superheroes, and spiraled on. It was nearly midnight when Brainy registered how much Nia was yawning and thought it might be time for them leave.
"I believe," he said, getting to his feet with ease after having moved to the end of the booth about halfway through the evening, "That it is time that we head home."
"Yeah," Nia agreed, getting up to stand next to him. "But thanks, you guys, that was really fun."
"That was fun," Kelly agreed vehemently. "Am I alone in thinking we should plan to do this again?"
"I'm down," Kara grinned. She looked over at William. "You want to head out, or...?"
He shrugged. "The night is young."
"As are we," Kara replied, smirking a little. "Pool rematch and then out for ice cream?"
He got up and held out his arm for her to take. "Sounds wonderful. My stomach may explode, though."
They waved their goodbyes to their friends before ducking into the crowd to find an empty pool table.
"We should probably head out, too," Kelly said, glancing at Alex for confirmation. "I have a few extended deadlines tomorrow so I can't be out too late."
Alex and Kelly started gathering their things, and Brainy and Nia waved their goodbyes and set off towards the exit. As they were walking back to Nia's car, the brunette glanced up at her boyfriend. "So," she began, "have you figured out why people like to go on double dates? Or... triple dates, in this case."
"I have, actually," Brainy replied promptly, sticking his finger in the air even as he grasped for Nia's hand. "I was musing on the topic all throughout dinner. See, when you spend time with a group of people in a 'hanging out' setting, you act like a couple and are mercilessly teased for it. But, if you go out with a group on the pretense of it being a date, just all together, it is not only accepted but expected for you and your partner to act like a couple."
"Huh," Nia mused. "That's an interesting take."
"For example," Brainy went on. "If I were to have kissed you tonight at the booth, there would have been smiles all around. But if I were to kiss you at game night, per say, I would probably get a Jenga block thrown at my head."
Nia broke into a laugh. "You might just be right about that." She tucked her head into his shoulder. "But, for the record... I wouldn't let them throw a Jenga block at you."
"Thank you," Brainy smiled. "I appreciate that, Nia Nal."
Author's Note: Aww, double dates are so fun!, she says, after never having gone on a double date. *facepalmmmm*
