Series 2, Episode 77 ~ House of Dreams
As Camilla stepped foot onto a red tile, there was an oddly familiar mechanical sound before all of them were flooded by a golden light opposite them causing Amber and Nina to gasp as Fabian pulled his sister back to safety.
"The Mask of Anubis..." Nina whispered in awe.
As the light dimmed, they could all finally see the prize they had all fought so hard for. Across from them in a glass case hanging was the Mask of Anubis.
"it's so pretty," Amber spoke up, "for a dog mask I mean."
"What are we waiting for?" Alfie laughed taking a few steps forward onto the board.
Is movement caused a slight shaking in the tunnel and Camilla grabbed the boy's arm and dragged him back, turning around in time to see a swirling deep purple magical vortex to appear on the ground on the tiled square in front of the mask. From it, another larger Jackal statue ascended up. Clearly, they couldn't just walk to the mask, they needed to play for it.
"The Golden prize will tempt the fool. Wise should heed this golden rule." Came the voice of Robert Frobisher-Smythe. Around them.
"Good old Frobby again..." Camilla mumbled slightly.
"This game of Senet you cannot win. If only the reckless will dare to begin. One wrong move will seal your fate and end too dark to contemplate."
"what does that mean?" Alfie asked immediately turning to the twins and Nina.
Fabian looked around the room with a worried look, "it means we need to be absolutely sure of the rules before we even think about playing."
"Guys, this is our Hogwarts giant chess game." Camilla sighed looking to the game pieces. "we have to play to win the mask."
"You two are thinking of playing?" Patricia asked in shock.
"She's right!" Nina agreed in panic, "it's far too dangerous."
"Plus, I'm pretty sure Ron almost died when they played that chess game Cam," Amber added in a tiny soft voice, "I'm not ready to actually die just yet."
"I do this task on my own."
"No!" Fabian told the American girl.
"like hell!" Camilla spoke at the same time causing the girl to look at the pair.
"What if we need other players," Fabian told her, "I will not let you do this by yourself. We won't!" Fabian gestured to himself and Camilla who crossed her arms and nodded her head in agreement to her brother's words. "come on, we all we all got the mark together," Fabian told the other Sibuna's who were looking a little unsure, "not just Nina. We can do this."
Fabian's oddly motivational speech caused nods from the others. They where Sibuna they could do this and they would do this.
"Sibuna." The three all spoke as one, right hand raised over their eye. Robert Frobisher-Smythe may have been smart but he couldn't win against Sibuna.
The twins looked to one another with a fiery determination they hadn't shared in a long time. They would complete this task. If anyone could outsmart an Egyptian spirit and the top Egyptologist of his day it was them. "Sibuna," the pair spoke as one.
They were the Rutter Twins.
Game On Frobisher.
The whole house with the exception of Joy was around the breakfast table the next morning laughing loudly and chatting excitedly as it was a Friday and they all were looking forward to the weekend.
"So, Jerome," Eddie spoke up as he sat himself back down again in the empty seat between Mara and Amber. He'd gone back into the kitchen to get more toast as Alfie had decided to make a toast fort on his plate and stolen the original batch that had been on the table.
At Eddie's call Jerome, Camilla and Alfie all looked up from their plates where they had been so focused seconds before; Camilla and Jerome helping Alfie out with his work of art by pre-jaming and peanut buttering the sides of the toast as a cement-like base for Alfie to use in sticking the toast together. It had kept them busy so none of the Anubis house residents weren't arguing much with the development. It was better they went with no toast than having salt put in their tea and coffee – morning pranks were always something small as the three were never fully awake enough for something elaborate.
"if that was you in Mara's article."
Camilla's jaw clenched slightly at the mention of articles and from soft nudge, Fabian gave her he was the only one who noticed. Both Mara and Joy were fiercely denying they wrote the hit piece on Camilla – well they denied it to those who asked neither girl had come to Camilla to say it wasn't them yet.
"then does that mean your dads like... in prison?" Eddie asked softly knowing there was no delicate way to dance around the subject.
Jerome paused for a second, he knew this day would come but he had hoped it come on his own terms not because he had to force his schoolmates to know the truth. "yes, he is..." Jerome spoke up stiffly waiting for the judgemental words his housemates were going to throw his way.
However, they didn't come.
"I mean, we're all cool with that man," Eddie spoke up with a smile at the boy, causing Jerome to look around slightly shocked but relieved to see the supportive faces of his friends.
"you could have just told us," Fabian added simply no judgement in his tone causing Camilla to smile from next to him.
"Yeah, maybe." Jerome awkwardly agreed with the male twin, looking at him over the smaller female twin's head before looking around the table at his housemates, "sorry..."
"whoa..." Alfie couldn't help the noise as it left his mouth, "did I just hear that right? Did you just... apologise?" Alfie sounded shocked but he was overly dramatic about it causing all the tension in the room to fade away as they all couldn't help but laugh at the boy's words.
"shame Joy couldn't apologise to you or Cam, eh Mara?" Amber spoke up causing Mara to look nervously towards the blonde.
"she won't even come down to breakfast." Patricia told them all in worry causing Camilla to frown a little. "she feels really bad."
"What did she expect? I mean what with all the bad-mouthing and the lying and the plagiarism,"
"not to mention the two scathing articles on Nina and Milly," Jerome agreed with Eddie.
Camilla and Amber turning their heads to look at Mara who shifted slightly in her seat at the boy's words.
The pair hadn't been sure before but now they knew for certain.
Amber's eyes widening as she glanced at Camilla who rolled her eyes and glanced to the heavens with a shake of her head.
She knew it! Mara had written the article on her, not Joy.
What the bloody hell had she done to offend the girl in such a way she'd do something like that.
No one else at the table noticed the silent realisation of the two beauty's as Mara pipped up to defend Joy, probably because she felt guilty, she had added the Camilla article to the girls apparent writing, "Hey, no Joy bashing."
"I do have to admit," Patricia sighed, "she has been pretty out of order lately."
"the articles she wrote on Nina and Camilla, they were just..." Fabian trailed off all of them understand what the boy was saying.
"but then to take credit for everything else that Mara's written..." Nina shook her head slightly.
"yeah but you all just assumed she had written them," Mara pointed out looking at the table.
"Have any of us stopped to question why Joy has lashed out like this?" Camilla asked looking around the table, "she had a bad year last year and we all kind of forgot about it. The girl's been playing catch up with all of us doing nothing to help her."
"Why are you defending her on this anyway?" Mara asked looking to Camilla oddly. "I know Joy isn't all bad but you have to admit..."
Camilla interrupted the girl as she got to her feet, "if there is anything I have learned in my time at this house, nothing is as simple as people try to make us believe." Camilla looked around at the table as she pulled her rucksack over her right shoulder, "we could have done way more to include her and we didn't." with that Camilla turned around and walked from the room. She wanted to talk to Joy tell her she knew she didn't write the article, or at least tell the girl she still had an ally on her side the girl deserved that at least.
Fabian watched his sister go with a sigh; he knew she was right but he couldn't quite forgive Joy for the words she had written about Camilla. Being left, forgotten, never truly belonging was something Camilla would always be struggling with in life and he knew it as he was dealing with the same insecurity along with many others. The girl had tapped into that and broadcast it to the school. Camilla might be ready to take the moral high ground with Joy but he wasn't quite there yet.
"Oh, Trudy!" Amber's voices broke the boy's thoughts as he noticed the table was empty apart from the Sibuna's – bar Camilla. He turned to see Trudy bustling out from the kitchen with a small book in her hand smiling around at them all. "you're looking better."
"I feel better," Trudy told them all with a bright smile, "I think I might be getting my memory back."
"Best... news ever!" Amber said though the enthusiasm in her tone didn't match the forced smile that was now on her face. This wasn't good news at all. If Trudy got her memory back the woman would once again be in trouble and none of them wanted that.
"I decided," Trudy explained looking at Nina as Fabian shot worried looks with Amber, Patricia and Alfie before they all looked back at Trudy with forced smiles, "to start a dream journal," the woman held up the little book in her hand, "and its unlocking something listen to this;" the woman paused to open a page before reading aloud, "first there's this figure in a black hood. I can hear some sort of bell's chiming, and then I'm looking at Anubis house and the lights start to go on but when I go towards it I'm a giant. And the house is really small. Then I open the door and I can just make out some tiny writing on the wall..."
The Sibuna's all looked at one another as the woman spoke trying not to look as if they could read between the woman's dreams when they all really could.
"What did the words say?" Nina couldn't help but ask.
"I don't know." Trudy sighed closing the book. "that's when I woke up, but it was all so real. I think I'm going to go tell Jasper..." she added before leaving the room leaving the Sibuna's with a whole load of information.
So Amber caught Camilla up on the Trudy dream situation as they walked arm in arm down the corridor during lunch, the girl explaining that Nina and Fabian were going to talk Trudy about it more at that current moment. As they walked down to the Student lounge, they passed an annoyed Eddie grumbling towards them.
"Dad issues?" Camilla guessed as she and Amber turned to look at him.
"for want of a better word."
"want to chat about it?"
Eddie smiled at Camilla and shook his head slightly, "I'll see what the old man wants first and then maybe I'll come find you to talk about it." He told his friend who shrugged and knew not to push. The two girls waving at him before turning and heading back towards the student lounge Eddie not even bothering to knock as he sauntered into his dad's office.
"you called?" he asked looking at his grinning father who was sat behind his desk. "and can we just make a deal that you will never do that again," Eddie looked to the microphone his father had used to summon him to his office.
"Ah, we promised each other we'd make more of an effort," Mr Sweet told Eddie before patting the Microphone, "this is me, 'Making an effort'."
"Effort appreciated." Eddie sarcastically told the man, "you couldn't have just texted me?"
Mr Sweet shrugged that would have been too easy. "Please," he gestured to the seat in front of him and with a sigh Eddie took it. "some of the things that Mara touched on in her article... did you really write me letters?"
Eddie wasn't sure what his dad had called him to talk about but the letters weren't on the list he'd formed in his head, "for the first couple of years, yeah," Eddie honestly told the man, "addressed too 'Eric Sweet. Teacher. UK'. I see you never really got those huh...?"
Mr Sweet shook his head wiping at his eyes a little, "no... I, eh, I had my reasons." He told his son, "for leaving you in America."
"Yeah, I know. Elderly Parents over here, Visa's... blah blah blah." Eddie shrugged it off as if it wasn't as big a deal as the two men knew it was.
Mr Sweet shook his head at the boy. "they were all excuses."
"Yeah, tell me about it."
"But I will... soon." He promised causing Eddie to look at him confused. "when you're ready."
"what does that even mean?! I am ready now!" Eddie demanded.
"well, it's just that sometimes these things aren't quite as black and white as they seem," Mr Sweet told the boy. he might be ready to know the truth about his true self but Mr Sweet wasn't ready to tell him. "Eddie... eh... now shouldn't you be getting back to class?"
Eddie's face fell at his dad's words. "you call me by intercom, talk to me in code about why you couldn't be there and then you just tell me to get to class?!" he knew the angry outburst wasn't helping but he couldn't help it. His dad was a confusing thing in his life he just desperately wished wasn't.
"I'm sorry Eddie..." Mr Sweet looked at him begging him to understand but knowing the boy wouldn't and couldn't. not just yet. "I made a mistake. Its too soon... none of you know the truth yet."
"What's too soon? None of who?!" Eddie demanded but only got silence as a response causing him to scoff, "Nice effort dad." With that, the boy got up from his seat and stormed from the room. He needed to find Patricia or Camilla. One of the girls who'd listen and let him rant to them about the shocking effort his dad was putting in.
"Joy!" Camilla smiled at the girl as she walked into the living room hoping it was enough to tell her that she wasn't here to yell or belittle the girl like everyone else seems to be doing as a default these days.
"Cam..." Joy breathed in relief slightly seeing the smile on the girl's face.
"I've been trying to catch you all day," Camilla told the girl as she sat down on the coffee table crossing her legs as she looked at the girl curled up on the couch.
"well, I don't know if you've noticed but I've been trying to avoid everyone for obvious reasons." Joy told the girl who shrugged in understanding.
"Joy I want you to know –"
"I didn't write that article on you!" Joy spoke quickly.
"I know you didn't write that... article on me..." Camilla finished causing Joy to sit up straighter in realisation.
"you know..."
"I know."
For the first time all day a small genuine smile crept onto Joy's face, she had an ally on her side in all this. "I have to ask..." Joy whispered, "what did you do to piss off Mara so much?"
Camilla opened her mouth to answer but then closed it again with a shrug, "honestly, I have no clue..."
"Cam, what are you doing talking to her?"
Camilla closed her eyes as Nina's voice came ringing across the room from where their housemates had all come bustling in for dinner. She understood Nina and Joy would never become the best of friends but the bitchyness in the comment was not needed.
"I'm being a friend," Camilla replied back in a no-nonsense tone as she looked across the room at their housemates.
"Why?"
"Because You guys haven't given a shit about me all year!" Joy screamed getting to her feet and letting the tears show in her eyes as she looked over the Anubis housemate's faces, taking a cruel delight in the shocked faces before her. "I have lost everything this term; I left school and I was terrified and alone and thinking that, just maybe, I still would have a group of people I belong with if I ever could come back to school. Then I come back and everything was different. I tried! I tried so hard! I tried everything I could to be friends with you lot again. All I wanted was my friends back." With that Joy left the room crying. Camilla glanced at Patricia who nodded her head and the two girls raced after their friend.
"I shouldn't have questioned you, Cam." Was Nina's apology to the two Sibuna girls who had run after Joy before dinner before she ran out of the house to get her taxi to her gran.
Patricia and Camilla were in the library on a hunt for something Trudy had found in her dream? Camilla wasn't quite sure; Alfie was on a sugar high when he explained it to her and was rather hyperactive so she got the bullet points but that was it.
"Well, no shit Sherlock." Patricia couldn't help but comment watching the girl's taxi drive off before the pair entered the library, crossing her arms before looking to Fabian who immediately gestured to the drawers on Jasper's desk for the girl to go looking through "so Trudy defiantly said a key?" she asked the boy as they all spread out to look for this 'key'. Though in a huge library/exhibition and knowing Robert it could mean anything.
"yeah, but the key might not be an actual Key..." Fabian told them causing Camilla to raise her hands silently behind him in exasperation.
"maybe Trudy's dreams are just that," Alfie groaned as he leaned his head on a bookcase having a serious sugar crash, "dreams..."
"you're not helping Alfie." Fabian told the boy before he turned to look at Amber who'd run up the stairs glancing to Camilla with concern as she sat on the steps halfway up. "found anything up there, Amber?"
"big fat zero on anything on the book of Senet." Amber sighed looking down at them all.
"I promised I'd find Nina something before she'd get back from the hospital" Fabian groaned slightly causing Camilla to bit her lip. A phrase from the article coming back to haunt her at Fabian's words; Even her own twin brother would choose his American ex-girlfriend over her.
Amber let out a gasp as she looked down at them all once again, "Cam..." she called causing the girl to look up at her friend, "I think I see something." Camilla got to her feet and ran up the metal steps to see what Amber was looking at.
The blondes focus was on the ground where Fabian stood, on the ground, there was a pattern in the middle of the room.
"do you see it Cam?" the girl pointed to the middle of the pattern, "the tile on the floor is different than all the others."
"your right." Camilla agreed causing the Sibuna's who were down the stairs to look at where Amber was pointing. Fabian getting to his knees and starting to pry up the different area, they needed to find something and soon.
