Series 2, Episode 78 ~ House of Pitfalls

Fabian had finally pulled the odd bit of flooring up and underneath was a Senet board where the rules of the game had been scratched onto the back, which was why they were all now stood around looking at it.

"so, it's a cross between snakes and ladders, and checkers?" Patricia asked as she looked at the game board.

"Chekes and Chadders?," Amber looked at Camilla in alarm as Alfie started to jump up and down frantically, "no, Leckers," Alfie ran to the two girls and waved his hand across the air in front of them whilst saying, "Snakers!"

Fabian laughed slightly at Alfie's excitement before bringing the conversation back to the point, "look, the journey across the board represents the journey from this life through the duat into the afterlife." He explained.

"Hey," Nina told them all as she wandered into the library causing them all to turn to look at her. "how's it going? We need too –" before Nina could say anything Jasper wandered into the library holding the fake mask of Anubis they had conned Rufus into thinking was real.

"isn't that?" Camilla asked trying not to sound nervous but with one look to Fabian, the boy knew having the mask back had instantly caused the girl a little fear.

"mysteriously returned..." Jasper informed them as he looked over the mask. "no note or anything, and only slightly damaged,"

The Sibuna's all looked to Camilla, Amber taking the girls hand in fear.

Rufus knew they had lied. Camilla was in danger even more so than before.

"I've managed to restore it to its original state," Jasper told them missing the glances Camilla's way.

"That mean's Rufus knows it was a fake." Nina groaned slightly in frustration.

"it would appear so, yes," Jasper agreed with the girl.

"oh great," Amber spoke up, "so he's going to be very very disappointed and sniffing around for the real one."

"which means me and Fabian are in more danger than ever," Camilla added looking to Nina whose eyes widened before looking to Fabian in a panic as if she had forgotten that Rufus would use Fabian as a means to control Camilla.

"at least it's a good thing we managed to find Roberts Senet board tonight, then," Fabian explained trying to lift the mood showing Nina the board.

"Please let it be noted that I am the one who found it," Amber added as Nina let out a triumphant noise as she saw the board in Fabian's hands.

"no way!"

"and look," Fabian turned the board so the girl could see what was written on the back.

"are these the rules?" Fabian nodded at the girl's question causing a bright smile to grace her face.

"The only person other than our family," Fabian pointed to himself and Camilla, "who would know the true ancient rules to the game would be Frobisher."

"What about the key Trudy mentioned?" Nina asked them all, "the clue from the dollhouse."

"Well..." Fabian trailed off unsure of how to tell the girl they found nothing.

"if there even is a clue," Patricia spoke up raising her eyebrows. They were hunting around for something they didn't know was from Sarah. They couldn't waste time now Rufus was back lurking.

"What if this is the key to playing Senet?" Fabian suggested tapping the board and looking at them all.

"Okay, even the Frobisher's weren't that cheesy," Camilla spoke up.

Nina looked at the board with a confused look, "why does that look all rather one-sided?"

"like pawns Vs Queens," Patricia added teasingly.

Fabian and Camilla looked at one another. The moment they had realised the game was the old one their grandfather had set up in his office they knew the truth behind the game. "Or humans Vs Gods." The two spoke as one.

"All of that sentence terrified me," Amber mumbled at the twin's ominous tone as the rest of the Sibuna's looked around at one another in fear. The twins were rarely wrong when in agreement. This time they all hoped it was the exception to that rule.

"Senkhara spoke via your gran?" Alfie asked to be quickly hushed by Nina.

The girl had told them all about a message Senkhara had given her when she was with her gran, apparently, they didn't have a lot of time left if the spirit had anything left to say. The Sibuna's where all sat in the living room, Camilla squashed between Amber and Fabian on the couch as Nina sat on an armchair Alfie on the one next to her, Patricia on the arm of Alfie's chair as they all looked to Nina.

"that is seriously scary," Amber couldn't help but comment at the thought their spirit buddy could now possess people.

"believe me it was!" Nina told the blonde before turning to the twins in desperation, if anyone could outsmart Frobisher in some ancient Egyptian game it be them, "we have to get that mask."

"Yeah, and we will," Fabian reassured the girl.

"the thing is..." Amber pipped up again, "Has anyone else wondered what Senhkara's going to do with it?" Camilla dropped her head and suppressed a groan. She had told the blonde about her and Victors chat about Senhkara and the mask over lunch that day not realising that mean the blonde would tell the whole of Sibuna. "I mean," Amber added looking to Camilla slightly before continuing, "she can hardly wear it as an accessory. She is a ghost."

Nina looked alarmed at the point Amber brought up having missed Camilla's reaction to the girl though Fabian hadn't.

"Well," Fabian decided to do damage control seeing the alarm in Nina's eyes and knowing the last thing they needed was Nina worrying about the wrong thing. "I don't think Senkhara's really interested in fashion Amber."

"Who cares what she wants with it!" Nina told them all causing Camilla to look up at her confused. Eh, if the bitch wanted to somehow use the mask to end the world or something then they kinda needed to care about why she wanted it. "she's asked for the mask and we're going to give it to her."

"and forever go down in history as the idiots who did," Camilla mumbled knowing only Fabian and Amber could hear her.

Mara watched a little amused from the sink where she was doing the washing up as Jerome next to her burst out laughing at Camilla and Alfie as the pair started to throw sweets at one another in the living room much to the annoyance of Nina and Fabian. Where the two had snuck sweets from was a question she didn't even bother to ask because when Alfie and Camilla were determined enough, they could get their hands on pretty much anything... The now-legendary goose incident was proof of that.

"You know," Mara spoke up to the boy next to her, his eyes lingering on Camilla causing Jealousy to flare up in her in a way she knew she shouldn't feel but she just couldn't help it.

Jerome's attention turned back to her and the jealous subsided, "what for?" Jerome couldn't help but ask the girl trying to wrack his brain for what he had done to cause the girls thanks.

"going to see Sweetie, like that, and getting my ban lifted." She explained, "though it's a shame it came with the cost of Jack Jackal."

Jerome smiled slightly and shook his head, "most of that was Camilla honestly, whichever Jack wrote the article about her being a bitch with power and money... well it was true." Jerome looked to Mara and saw her confused look, "one treat of her parents caused Sweetie to permanently deleted the site, there is enough on her plate at the moment that cutting off Jack from becoming Gossip girl Amun in that way was the easiest and most direct way."

Mara frowned slightly at Jerome's words and glanced at Camilla in the other room with slightly conflicting feelings. The girl in question was gathering armfuls of bags of sweets with Alfie before they ran out of the room after their friends. Camilla had been the one to get her ban lifted? But why would she do that? It wasn't unknown knowledge that the two girls weren't the best of friends so why would she do something like that for her.

"Oh, talking of the article..." Jerome looked to Mara as he took the next plate to dry down, "it wasn't you... that wrote that on Camilla."

"No! No way!" Mara instantly responded though she looked away from the boy and to the soapy dishwater, "I only sent in articles anyway... or I did for Jack. I had no control over what was posted."

Jerome nodded his head a relief flooding him hearing that Mara hadn't written it, "good... good."

"Why do you ask?"

"I just needed to hear you say it wasn't you," Jerome told the girl honestly, "I know Camilla has an idea of who did but she's kept that close to her chest."

Mara bit her lip at this news but didn't say anything. The conversation was approaching territory she couldn't control and she needed to find a way to bring it away from that.

"either way," Jerome shrugged with a smile at the girl next to him, "you deserve to be unbanned, your columns are great and the last piece you did on Father's and Son's... well..."

"you liked it?" Mara asked a smile on her face.

"I hardly recognised myself," Jerome told her honestly before he took glanced up at the now-empty living room as he put the dishcloth down a conversation Amber had had with him filling his brain.

The blonde goddess had all but confronted him in a hissed whisper during art, the pair having been put together to draw the other. The girl wanted to know what was going on with him, Camilla and Mara. This, of course, caused alarm in Jerome as he didn't know what was going on there with him and either of the girls which in an oddly unJerome way he proceeded to tell the girl – knowing full well Alfie would be informed by the blonde as the two were growing increasingly closer once again. Amber's advice had been simple, choose one and choose one soon because this little game of uncertainty was going to cause someone to be hurt.

The advice had plagued him for the rest of the day mainly because it had caused him to finally have to try to put some sort of label onto whatever was going on with him and Camilla. With Mara, he knew where he stood. He liked her; he had a crush on her. But with Camilla... everything felt so complicated because he was drawn to her in a way he'd never been drawn to her before, and the feelings that came with that were muddled and hard to pin down. As a pair, they were more than friends and less than a couple. Honestly, everything about the ever-growing feelings and the depths of them scared him tenfold. He'd never felt anything like that or seen anyone else with feelings like that. If he tried to peruse something with Camilla with the life she led and knowing her powers would lead one day would there be room for him in it?

He wasn't magical. He wasn't special. He was just human.

So, he knew it was weak of him, but he was going to try to choose Mara. She was safe, easy, and wouldn't cause him to worry while she battled some evil or protected her friends as they did that.

"that article, is that really how you see me?" Jerome asked the girl next to him softly.

"as a human being?" Mara teased slightly, "with emotions and a conscience? I like that Jerome; I wish he'd shown up sooner."

Jerome wasn't stupid he could read between the lines of the words Mara had said which just confused him even more with the girl. She had Mick, why was she perusing him so much but then backing out at the last minute. Like she liked knowing she had some kind of back up.

"Jerome I really like you," Mara told him quietly.

"but as a friend?" Jerome couldn't help but question, if she said yes, he could move past her if she said no... by the god's, feelings were complicated and he had to resort in Millington love advice session again.

"it's not like that..." Mara explained, "I'm still seeing Mick."

"no, you're not!" Jerome argued with her, why was trying to have a simple relationship so not simple, "he's in Australia!"

"you know what I mean, we're trying to give the long-distance thing a shot," Mara explained to him with a small apologetic smile.

"You know what...Fine." Jerome sighed. He was back to square one. So much for choosing a girl. "well when you get bored of him talking about Kangaroos, I might have moved on..." Jerome flinched slightly at the words hating he was using Camilla like that but also knowing that if choose Camilla there would be no backing out there, something about the depths of those unnamed feelings told him once he started to peruse something romantic with her there was no backing out. One of the reasons he chose Mara in the first place, he wasn't at the stage of his life to not have an escape from a situation he couldn't control.

The Sibuna's moved up to the girl's bedroom to try to learn the game of Senet. Alfie and Camilla had dragged the box she used for storage out into the middle of the room from the end of the bed and the twins were currently sitting opposite each other the senet board on it. Camilla playing the part of Gods while Fabian tried to outsmart her. According to Fabian Camilla could be the only person in the room who could outsmart him so it seemed like the best choice of partner.

The two only looking around from their game as Patricia came back in with a small sad smile. She had gone through to her, Joy and Mara's room with a 'peace' offering trying to talk to Joy but clearly, the girl in question didn't want to hear what the girl had to say.

"Hey how's it going?" she asked them all, looking at the intense game between the twins with a bemused smile.

"Yeah, yeah I think I'm getting the hang of it," Fabian told the girl moving a piece.

"Camilla's managed to killed off herself, you and Alfie already," Amber told Patricia as she sat down next to her on Nina's bed, pointing to the piece's in question, "but 'he's getting the hang of it'."

Fabian sighed and gave Amber an annoyed glance before looking to Patricia to explain the game to her, "the aim is to get past the guards of Anubis without landing on one of these danger squares." He pointed to the squares Alfie had put googly eye's on so they knew they were 'dangerous' – because they were the smallest stickers, they could find in the whole of Sibuna.

"if you land of one of those, you lose a life to me... the gods," Camilla added causing Patricia to laugh at the girl's enthusiasm as she sat down next to her.

"metaphorically speaking for our game... we hope," Nina added as the twins went back to their game.

"Fabian's only passed Camilla 2 times out of four though," Alfie added.

"Great..." Patricia couldn't help but sarcastically say, "so we have a fifty/fifty chance of suffering and end too dark to contemplate..." she mocked Frobisher's words, "well assuming Frobisher is as good as Camilla at the game."

Just then Camilla triumphantly took the token Amber had dubbed was Fabian causing the boy to look alarmed at Patricia's words.

"Or..." he spoke up trying to think positively, "a fifty/fifty chance of getting across the board and to the mask."

"I say we go down tonight," Nina spoke up as Fabian finished the game using 'her' piece with a triumphant noise of his own causing Camilla to groan slightly. Yes, there had been casualties but Fabian had technically just won the game 3 out of 5 was a good rate she had to admit.

"No way! we are not ready!" Amber immediately told the American girl trying not to eye her token in worry.

Fabian looked to Camilla who nodded slightly, "I'm sorry Amber, but we're are ready as we'll ever be."

"We're running out of time Amber!" Nina added rather bluntly until Camilla clicked her fingers with an angry look in the American's direction causing the piece that represented her's top to explode off. Nina knew that was Camilla's silent warning about the tone of voice she had used. Nina let out a sigh and approached the topic again in a calmer voice this time while Fabian mourned the queen in his chess set Camilla had just de-crowned to prove an explosive point, "for Gran, for me, for Cam... for all of us."

Camilla was practically shoved out of the upper floor door by Patricia and Alfie as a means to see if the coast was Victor clear or not – both knowing the girl was Victor's favourite and other than the whole amulet smashing thing or the house midnight feast first day back of term she hadn't been given any punishments by the man. Though Camilla was quick to grumble being made to re-learn the history of Egypt to factor in the true magic wasn't exactly a delight or her idea of fun.

After a few seconds of watching the girl's figure from through the stained glass where she just tilted her head and crossed her arms, the other Sibuna's pushed open the door assuming the coast was clear for them to sneak down.

One by one they popped their heads out the door in a very scooby doo way, causing a snigger from Camilla, all of them noticing the sleeping figure of Victor by his desk. So pushing the door open a little more they quietly snuck down the stairs, all of them expertly skipping the now squeaky stair that Nina had pried up the year before looking for clues.

The Jackal statues looked 100 times more deadly at night all the Sibuna's had to admit as they glanced around the large Senet board that was the final task. Camilla hung back from the entrance as Fabian paused looking at the golden throne used by the game master. "are you okay?" Camilla whispered.

"what if I'm wrong? What if I cant do this? what if you or someone else gets hurt?" Fabian whispered back.

Camilla sent him a confident smile, "I'll be there to heal us if we get hurt or need protection if those Jackals come for one of us I'm planning on blasting them." She lifted the salt shaker in her hand causing a small laugh from Fabian.

The boy grabbed her hand and squeezed it, "you protect the rest of us and I'll protect you." He told her, causing Camilla to raise her eyebrows at him watching as he nodded his head once as if he'd been mulling this over in his head for a while, "I'm your brother, I have to protect you,"

Camilla looked at him, "Fabian, you've always protected me even before Sibuna... don't worry I trust you." With that, she turned and joined the group in the triangle formation by the entrance so she was the tip of the point all of them facing a Jackal.

Fabian clambered onto the golden throne and looked across at the board, "okay it's simple, those guards are our opponents, first, we make our move then it's their turn."

"How exactly do they move?" Alfie asked eyeing up his Jackal.

"We don't know yet..." Fabian tried not to sound nervous, "I need to get you all safely to the other side of the board avoiding any pitfalls."

"I wonder what pitfalls mad Frobby has in store for us," Alfie mumbled.

"Remember an Anubis piece can only take you if you're on a danger square; which down here are the one with the Jackal marks."

"I prefer the googly eyes... less scary." Camilla leaned over to whisper to Alfie and Amber who nodded their heads in agreement as the three looked at the mark in question on the floor.

"it's like the snake in snakes and ladders," Nina spoke up, "but what happens after that?"

"Let's hope we never find out," Fabian ominously spoke.

"So not reassured." Patricia pipped up.

"Our side moves 5 squares each turn, so one square each. Just go where I say. Any more questions?"

Camilla raised her hand and, in a light, joking voice she asked, "Yes, how is it possible that you and I are related?" they all knew that she'd only spoken to break the thick tension that had filled the room the moment they'd stepped foot into the task chamber.

"Let the games begin," Fabian spoke looking to the board. "Amber... go forward one square."

"Me?" Amber squeaked in fear, "Alfie said he really wanted to go first."

"I'd never cut in front of a lady," Alfie retorted.

"Amber..." Fabian groaned slightly. "do it."

Amber looked around at them all before nervously taking the first step onto the board.

"Okay Nina, Patricia move forward one step."

The two girls looked to one another, taking each other's hands before nervously joining Amber on the board.

"Alfie, Cam... your turn."

The jokesters moved together so they were stood next to their friends. The game had truly begun.

"Okay, Robert... your move," Camilla looked to the Jackals. She and Fabian were both trying to work out their moves and weaknesses.

With a horrible screeching sound as rock moved against rock and the oddly mechanical sound, they'd all grown to love hearing but now hated the Jackal's all turned to face a danger square.

Alfie let out a laugh as he realised, they just turned on the spot, "Is that all you've got Frobisher!" he yelled at the room.

Of course, Fabian ignored the shout and went back to his game, slowly moving his friends one by one around the board. All of them holding their breath as the Jackal's had their turn. They had been playing for around 5 minutes so they where scattered around the board, "Finally Amber..." Fabian spoke up from the throne giving his last instruction of their round. Camilla was in the middle of the Jackal circle with the other's around the edges of the board, "one square forward."

Amber turned to look at Fabian in alarm, "but that's a danger square," her voice was thick and fear could be heard in it. "how come everyone else gets a safe one?"

"Look, I don't have any choice, Amber..." Fabian told her softly and apologetically.

"Amber please..." Camilla added backing up her brother.

Amber looked to the girl and nodded her head. She'd be brave like Camilla, who had tackled all the danger squares so far. She could be brave. With a deep breath, the girl took a step forward before flinching as the stone scraping could be heard.

To the horror of them all, a Jackal turned to face Nina who looked up at it in fear.

Time slowed down for them all in that moment as they knew they were about to realise the horror's Robert had ahead for them.

The floor under her slowly sliding away and the girl teetered on the edge like one breath would push her over.

The seconds were what Camilla needed as she looked at Nina, pulling a bracelet of the girls off her wrist where there was one of each Sibuna members, as she threw it and the salt to the ground the girl, "Remponera,"

It took the Sibuna's a second as smoke covered where Camilla and Nina stood before Nina appeared where Camilla had been and Camilla looked to her brother before falling down the pit that had appeared under her feet.

"CAMILLA!" Fabian's scream being the last thing she heard before she was engulfed into the darkness.

In order to save her Chosen One, the Protector had given her own life... Or so it appeared to Sibuna.
