When a fighter has someone in their 'guard', it means they're on their back and have their opponent wrapped up in their limbs. Usually, this is 'closed guard', where the fighter's legs are wrapped around his opponent's torso, but there are a number of variations. Some of them are set-ups for another move, but in general, the fighter doesn't want to be on their back and has used the guard to prevent or limit attacks.
