Author's Note: I actually got this prompt from someone on Archive Of Our Own (which I am now on)!
The prompt from CristinaCuba was (paraphrased) as follows:
'Hi! I loved this fanfic, a question, can you ask one where Nia is pregnant in Brainy, and at first she cries because she doesn't know how to tell her?'
Summary: Nia finds out she's pregnant.
Spoilers: Not exactly... but we can say that this chapter takes place before 'Psychology At 1am'
Nothing had prepared her for this. Not a single book. Not a single dream. Not a single gay fanfiction that her sister had sent her. Nothing.
Because Nia Nal was holding her first pregnancy test, and it was positive.
Positive.
Positive.
There was no. Way.
That wasn't entirely true. There was a way, thanks to Brainy and the future and, well, sex. But Nia had never thought that this could be her reality. Standing in her bathroom, holding a tiny plastic stick, knowing that her future was about to change so very, very much.
Nia took a hard seat on the toilet, letting out a slow breath to try and steady herself. If she started crying now, she might never stop, and then how would she get it together enough to be cool and collected when she told Brainy? It had been him, of course, that made all of this possible, which meant that having a child had been completely in their plans, but...
This still all felt so sudden. How could she know for sure that this was even what Brainy wanted right now?
'Don't be ridiculous, Nia,' she scolded herself. 'Brainy's the reason you can even get pregnant, in more ways than one. Of course this is what he wants!'
Nia stood up from the toilet lid and walked slowly over to the bathroom counter, taking deep breaths into the mirror. Brainy, who always got home about a half hour later than she did, should be arriving soon. She would sit him down in the living room, hand him the stick, and... that would be that. Cat outta the bag, all cards on the table.
Panic welled. Is that really how she should do it? This was their first child. What if the shock was too much? What if pregnancy tests were, like, different or something in the future, and Brainy didn't understand what the plus sign meant? Nia desperately wanted to call Kara to get her opinion and advice, but what could she say? "Asking for a friend" didn't exactly cut it in this particular situation.
When Nia blinked back out of her head, she found there were tears on her cheeks. Crap. She had really wanted to wait to start crying until Brainy was there. If he walked in and she looked even remotely tearful he would get all worked up thinking something was wrong and the blow of her pregnancy would be even worse. She had to calm down.
What could she do?
Nia didn't have any time to figure that out because at that moment she heard the sound of the door shutting. "Nia?" Brainy called, and she could almost picturing him primly hanging his coat on the hook and placing his shoes in parallel position on the mat like he had every single afternoon since they bought their apartment. "I have arrived!"
Usually, Nia would smile at his theatric announcement and head into the hallway to greet him with a hug and a long kiss hello. Today, she spent every last second trying to remove any evidences of her tears before carefully stepping out of the bathroom.
"Ah! There you are." Brainy beamed at her, but his expression faltered a moment later, eyes narrowing to peer suspiciously at her. "Have you been... crying?"
"I have something to tell you," Nia said, feeling the strangest urge to hold her breath. She glanced around, still half in the bathroom with Brainy multiple feet away. Was this really how she wanted to announce the fact that she -they- were pregnant?
"Why don't we go into the living room," she decided, making up her mind to just go with her original plan of tell Brainy by simply handing him the pregnancy test.
She started towards the couch, feeling like they should probably be sitting down for this, but Brainy caught her arm. "Nia," he said softly. "Are you alright?"
He looked concerned and worried and Nia wished that she could have somehow done this differently. This shouldn't have been a moment where either of them cried for any other reason than that they were overjoyed. This should have been happy.
Nia scrunched her face up, letting out a shuddery breath. "I have something to tell you," she said. "And it's... kind of huge."
"You're pregnant."
Nia's eyelids flew back up. "Um," she said, blinking at Brainy in astonishment. "Wait- wait, how did you know?"
Brainy's eyes went even wider than hers and he stumbled backward a step. "I am correct?" he asked faintly. "It was- it was merely a hypothesis based on our recent endeavors and the fact that I could think of no other big announcements that you might have been preparing to tell me!"
Of course this would happen. Of all the ways for him to find out... he would make an educated guess and actually get it right.
Nia tilted back her head and started to laugh. "Yes, you're right," she said through her giggles, her eyes starting to stream. She wasn't even sure if she was crying or if her eyes were just watering from mirth. "You nailed it, Wildcat. I'm... pregnant."
In a second, Brainy had swooped her up in a hug and was laughing and chattering excitedly. "You made use of a pregnancy test?" he asked in between kissing her all over her face. "To receive the results?"
"Yeah," Nia said, still giggling a little as she wound her arms around him and squeezed him just as tightly as he was holding her. He kissed her nose and her cheeks and her lips before finally pulling away to gaze in wonder at the tiny plastic stick with the even tinier plus sign that she'd been hiding in her pocket for the majority of their conversation.
"We will have to make an appointment with the doctor," he said, looking back to his wife. "To find out if the test is true. There may be... complications with getting a correct reading on your pregnancy, considering the situation. But I am confident that we will be able to take all the necessary steps to make sure you and the baby are safe."
His rambling mostly went in one ear and out the other but Nia nodded along anyway. "Okay," she whispered, winding her fingers around the back of his neck and into his hair and kissing him again, longer this time. She felt so warm and nearly all of the worry from earlier had vanished, but she still had to make sure of something. "So you- you're happy? Even if it's so sudden and we don't have anything figured out and if I didn't even get the chance to officially tell you because you guessed?"
"Nia Nal," Brainy breathed, rubbing his nose against hers. "I have never been happier."
Author's Note: Eep, sorry it's so short! I wasn't exactly sure how to draw it out because, as Nia thought through, she couldn't talk to anyone but Brainy to make the pre-telling longer and it's not like the telling itself could be all that long if I wanted to keep it interesting and moving forward.
Hopefully you still enjoyed and it was at least somewhat what you were hoping for. Thanks for the prompt! :)
