Series 2, Episode 82 ~ House of Memory
Alfie knew when the Sibuna's found out what he was doing he'd be in hot water but right now he didn't care. He could deal with the consequences easily. Patricia would just be mad and maybe pour juice over him before getting over it, Fabian was already too busy worrying about his sister to really car and Amber... he knew he could pass it off as him trying to get Jamilla together if she really got mad with him.
Jerome was on his bed reading when Alfie entered their room, Alfie giving him a small smile as he put his bag onto his bed before turning to face Jerome, "I've been meaning to tell you something."
"You say that as if you're remotely capable of keeping secrets from me." Jerome spoke lowering the book and sitting up to look at Alfie, "But go on - surprise me."
Jerome's tone was cheerful which contrasted with a serious look on Alfie's face.
"it's about Camilla..." Alfie started.
Jerome instantly got to his feet pointing his finger at Alfie, "I knew there was something more about Camilla's disappearance. She's not with Jasper dealing with some family thing is she?"
Alfie rubbed a hand along his jaw nervously as he tried to think about how he was going to break the news to the boy, "no... she's not with Jasper."
"then, where is she?" Jerome demanded, "Is she okay?"
"Where she is... is a long story, but she is okay for now." Alfie told him causing Jerome to look at him to continue. "you know how we told you about the tunnels and the tasks?"
"To find the Mask of Anubis..." Jerome nodded his head sounding confused clearly trying to figure out what that had to do with Camilla's disappearance.
"Well... we're at the last task, and it's some weird Egyptian board game that only Frobisher-Smyth knew," Alfie explained slowly.
"Right..."
"The consequences of failing to safely cross the board is it takes a player... Camilla swapped places with Nina and was taken by the game..." Alfie whispered to the boy watching his reaction. "she's somewhere under the school and the only way we can get her back is winning the game..."
Jerome's knees gave way and he was glad he had his bed to catch his fall as he took in the boy's words. Camilla had done something stupidly Camilla and sacrificed herself for Nina and was now trapped.
"The Sibuna's are keeping it all hush but I felt you needed to know because, you know, you and Cam..." Alfie trailed off as Jerome looked up at him.
"what about me and Cam?" Jerome asked his voice barely a whisper.
Alfie's eyes widened in shock, the boy really didn't know or at least didn't want to say it out loud. "dude, its obvious to anyone with eyes... you may have some silly crush on Mara but your clearly in love with our Camilla."
There was a beat of silence that fell as the words rang out around them. The words Jerome hadn't realised the extent off until they were said out loud for the universe to hear.
They both turned as they heard the front door slam shut.
"I can't believe you told Joy!" Amber shriek was loud enough that anyone in the house could hear it. So much for a Sibuna Secret.
"I should..." Alfie pointed to the door.
Jerome simply nodded his head, his face full of thought as he mulled over the words his friend had told him. Camilla was missing but they were fighting to get her back along with Nina, and Alfie finally had told him the truth of what their housemates saw. Jerome just had to somehow compute it.
Alfie came running from his room to see Amber hitting Fabian with her hairbrush in the middle of the hallway the boy using a binder as a shield Patricia looking on behind them looking bemused but not stepping in to help either side.
"you should have checked with us first Fabian!" Amber shouted at the boy angrily. "the first rule about Sibuna is you do not talk about Sibuna!" with that and a final hit of her hairbrush the girl finally seemed to get her anger out and Fabian stood straighter to look at the group that had formed.
"I told you," Alfie pipped up looking at them all, "we should have had Mara and Joy fight it out between them. Epic chess off!" Alfie hadn't given up on his idea of the chess off and he was hoping that keeping the gang distracted would keep them from asking why he had run off to talk to Jerome... because according to Amber he too had just broken the first rule of Sibuna. "two cute girls in a brainy tournament..."
Before he could say anything, else Patricia had taken Amber's hairbrush off the blonde and thrown it at Alfie to get him to shut up about the chess tournament idea.
"We don't have time for that!" Fabian told Alfie, rather glad of Patricia's interfering to get him to shut up. "we don't have time for anything!" he added with a hiss looking to Amber. Trying to get the girl to understand he did it to save his sister. They were on a time crunch and boy was he ready to do anything in order to get her back.
"Sibuna!" Joy called from the landing.
"SHHHH!" All four Sibuna's in the hallway instantly hushed the girl looking at her with a mixture of expressions.
"Sorry..." Joy whispered to them before racing down the stairs to meet them all. "Fabian told you all then? He asked me to join the gang!"
Even Fabian had to flinch a little at the cheerful tone in Joy's voice, she didn't seem to understand the seriousness of the situation they found themselves in.
"Sibuna!" Joy raised her left hand to her eye and hissed it at them all excitedly.
Alfie looked at Joy and fixed her hands as Amber glared at Fabian once more. She was not happy with this situation in the slightest.
"NO!" Amber screamed.
"As a temporary member... like someone else..." Fabian added looking to Amber and Patricia who understood he was talking about Jerome.
"Yep." Joy agreed still in the same cheerful tone, making sure to pop the 'p' in the word. " so Fabs, you wanna teach me how to play this game or what?" with that she looped her arm in his and marched him into the living room. Not giving him much of an option causing the remaining Sibuna's to look at one another. This was going to be interesting.
After getting out of their school uniforms the Sibuna's all gathered in the living room to see how Joy's progression was going with the senet board. Even Amber, though she hated to admit it, was slightly impressed by the girl. Joy picked the game up straight away and had already beaten Fabian far more times than Fabian managed to beat Camilla when they were first trying it out.
"Yes!" Patricia celebrated as Joy moved a counter with ease to the other side for the 10th time. She might not like the fact Joy could be putting herself in danger but she did like the fact Joy was now in Sibuna, less secret keeping between the best friends.
"And the human wins again!" Joy screamed victoriously, her rather competitive side coming out as she turned to Fabian and raised her hand for a high five which the boy gave excitedly. Hopefully, this was proof that bringing Joy in was the best option to save Nina and Camilla. If anyone could outsmart Robert Frobisher-Smythe at a game like this it would be Joy.
"Well done," Fabian told her with a smile as he turned to the board to reset the pieces.
"I honestly can't believe there's a whole set of tunnels down there," Joy told the other Sibuna's as Fabian reset the board. "I can't wait to see them."
"Yeah..." Amber spoke up from the first time from where she stood by the door arms crossed a seriously unimpressed expression on her face. "Well, if you've been through what we've been through you'd realise its not just one big game." She told the girl moving across to sit on the couch opposite her. She was moving passed the whole 'Joy being a Sibuna temp' thing because the damage had been done, Joy knew. The thing that was irking her was the way Joy didn't seem to understand the seriousness of the situation. Camilla willingly gave her place to save Nina's life – in a matter of speaking because they didn't know Camilla was stuck at the time. They had friends starving and stuck. Joy needed to understand that and soon.
"I thought that's exactly what it was." Joy retorted, picking a piece off the board and waving it around. "one big game."
"Eh actually..." Fabian spoke up understanding where Amber was coming from and realising, he hadn't told the Sibuna's what Joy knew and didn't know, "Amber I haven't told Joy absolutely everything. It's best we do this on a need to know basis." He told them all. Watching the Sibuna's relax a little at that news and Joy look a little put-out but didn't say anything. She knew more than she had before so she couldn't complain much.
"oh, thanks." She scoffed slightly. "but Camilla is trapped somewhere, and Nina is with her, right?" Joy asked looking to the group, getting nods. "so, if I help you win this game, we can get them back."
"yes," Patricia told her friend with a smile.
"And you really trust her to do that do you?" Amber asked Fabian in a bitchy tone not caring if Joy heard her or not. "After everything Joy's done and knowing how she feels about Nina?"
Fabian glanced to Joy who bit her lip. If it was just Nina trapped he wasn't so sure, but the turning point was Camilla. Despite everything Joy did Camilla had stuck up for her.
Joy looked to Fabian and shook her head; she could handle this. Joy looked to Amber, "Amber, are you saying id deliberately throw the game in order to leave Nina down there?"
"Yes, actually."
"Fine," Joy looked at the blonde, "do it without me," she got to her feet and walked to the door before pausing, "but you seemed to have forgotten one major fact... it's not only Nina down there but Camilla too. Camilla who has done nothing but vouch for me all term despite everything. Now take a good time to think about if I would throw the game for a girl who has proved she is my true friend..." with that Joy left the room, leaving all the Sibuna's bar Fabian with a lot to mull over. They had forgotten about Camilla and Joy's friendship as the overwhelming knowledge about the feud between Joy and Nina had overwhelmed their worries.
"Wait... Joy!" Patricia got up and ran after her friend.
Fabian looked to Amber pissed off with the girl, "What did you do that for?" he venomously asked as he started to put the game of Senet away.
"Oh, come on Fabian!" Amber scoffed, "it was what we were all thinking."
"I wasn't thinking it at all," Fabian retorted, "I was thinking that I want my sister back. I want Camilla back, we're not as good without her." Alfie let out a soft laugh at the boy's words causing Fabian to point to him, "If you tell her I said that, I will make sure she will curse your life." With that, the boy got to his feet and ran from the room senet board under his arm.
As he got to the hallway a voice stopped him, "Mr Rutter..." Fabian glanced up to see Victor peering down from his office, "where is your sister?" Fabian gulped this was a conversation he had been trying to avoid.
"I only said yes to Fabian because he sounded so desperate!" Joy exclaimed as she threw herself onto her bed, looking to Patricia who sighed. "But for Amber to actually-"
"he is desperate." Patricia interrupted, "we all are... we need you, Joy."
"Really?" Joy sat up and looked at her friend.
"Really, really," Patricia repeated causing Joy to give her a small smile.
There was a soft knock on the door causing the girls to look around as Fabian came in, still in his uniform, looking rather worried and guilty, though the determined look on his face told them both he was there to seek out Joy's help once again. "Hey, em, look..." he started looking to Joy, "about what Amber said..."
"it's okay," Joy told him with a smile glancing to Patricia before looking back at the boy, "I'm still in."
Fabian's expression was almost comical as his eyebrows lifted in shock turning to Patricia in awe. Having no clue what the girl said to cause Joy to agree to stay on but whatever it was he was glad it had been said. "Great!" Fabian turned back to Joy in excitement.
"But you're going to have to take me down there though," she told him getting to her feet, "I should really see those statue things for real."
"Okay, well, ehm..." Fabian glanced to Patricia understanding Joy's logic but having no clue how to go about doing what she had requested, "we'll go down... tonight."
"Okay."
"After the pin drop."
Joy smiled and took the board from Fabian, "in the meantime, I'm going to get practising some more."
"thank you..." Fabian told her honestly. "I really appreciate this."
Joy smiled at him, "well... we all need Cammie in our lives. This place is far to quiet without her," She teased.
Fabian held his arms out and gathered Joy into an awkward hug causing the girl to laugh slightly hugging him back before he let go and bumbled from the room slightly. Still in shock Joy had agreed to stay on and help them.
"well I guess there are some perks to this then," Joy added the moment the door shut looking to Patricia to laughed slightly. "you know, to this kind and helpful thing."
"aww done even start this again..." Patricia laughed at Joy.
Camilla was about to bang her head against a wall. Hours had passed in the small little room she and Nina found themselves in. Nina had woken up and decided the best way to keep her mind active was to recite the US States in alphabetical order, which was all well and good but whenever the girl messed up, she started back at the start again and Camilla was getting rather annoyed with the noise the girl was now making. As she reached Iowa Camilla went to say something but Victor Rodenmaar Senor decided to pop up and do something about the girls' noise.
"I see Your Chosen One is trying to keep busy..." the man said causing Nina to turn around to look at him in fear. Before Camilla could do so much as get to her feet Nina's eyes had rolled back into her head and the girl fainted.
"oh great... Just great." Camilla groaned as she caught the girl before gently placing her onto the ground. "next time come when she isn't awake... please."
The ghost watched the scene with interest but nodded his head in agreement to The Protectors words.
"Now you're here, tell me more about The Osirian, what is their link to me?" Camilla asked.
The man groaned and sat himself down on a box with a grunt as Camilla took up the pacing Nina had been doing moments before. Since the man's departure, she had had a lot on her mind, which was to be expected. She just had no clue how she was meant to tell it to Nina. "I'm afraid I have told you all I know, my dear," he told the girl. "My Victor might have the answers to the questions you ask. He was a Protector of course,"
"Sarah was his Chosen One," Camilla nodded as if she knew this already.
"And Rufus Zeno was her Osirian," Victor spoke in a venomous tone," Camilla put her hand over her collarbone her eyes widening. She used magic against an Osirian, that's why she was hurt. She tried to harm a fellow protector of secrets. "they were to learn the skills so one day they could guide and help you and The Paragon in your task."
"well, the gods fucked up with choosing Zeno!" Camilla bitterly laughed.
"It wasn't the god's fault it went terribly wrong," Victor Senior informed her with a sad smile, "the thing that makes you three powerful is something the gods cannot control or possess. You are human and your humanity is your greatest strength." Camilla looked at him confused, "it all simply went terribly wrong with Rufus, the power went to his head."
"no shit."
"which was when I knew I needed to find a way to protect my Victor and Sarah," Victor Senor told her, "find a way for them to stay around long enough so they could guide you."
"so you brewed the elixir..."
"and got caught doing so," the man nodded his head, "Robert never forgave me after that and broke the cup up after only one batch was made."
Camilla looked at her hands not saying anything because the cup was fully intact now.
"but it was for the better I have come to realise my dear," the man's words caused her to look up at him. the man looking tired and regretful, "Immortality isn't living forever. It's just called surviving forever."
"I don't see how dying is any better..."
The man shook his head with a knowing smile, "Do not fear death, my dear, death is the reason why the things you do have weight in this world. It is why you have meaning. When you have meaning, then you live."
"God your worse than Vicky." Camilla groaned at his sceptic words leaning against the wall to look at him. She knew he was giving her advice but whatever it was she wasn't quite ready to understand it in full yet.
"he gave me this memory box," Trudy explained to the students that evening as they sat around the table for dinner. Mara had asked about Trudy's mind theory that day and the woman was more than happy to tell them all about it.
Fabian not missing the looks passed between Amber and Alfie at the mention of the box as he put roast potatoes onto his plate.
"and then he asked me too close my eyes," Trudy said passing the bowl she had in her hand to Jerome, "and relax and empty all my thoughts into the box. And then we just put them all back again in the right order."
"but did it work?" Mara asked.
"Yes!" Trudy excitedly exclaimed. "I remember absolutely everything."
"really?" Fabian asked trying not to sound worried but boy he was worried. "really?!" he corrected himself to put a smile on his face as Trudy looked his way.
"I remember the beach and the hotel..." Trudy listed off causing the Sibuna's to glance to one another in confusion. What beach? "oh and the food... the food was to die for."
"the beach?!" Jerome demanded, glancing to Fabian. It was one thing Rufus had kidnapped Trudy now something had happened to her memories.
"a hotel?!" Patricia also questioned.
"yes! My vacation!" Trudy laughed at their responses, "such a shame to let a branch falling on my head blackout the holiday of a lifetime." With that, she happily wandered back into the kitchen to help Vera once again.
The moment Trudy was in the kitchen Alfie got to his feet as did Amber.
"Eh, where are you too off too." Came Vera's voice but it was ignored by the pair.
"Fabian, you need to come and help," Alfie demanded of the male twin looking alarmed and failing at not sounding alarmed too.
"Help with what?" Vera asked again as Fabian pushed out his chair. "Can't it wait?"
"I'm afraid not," Amber told the woman in a vague sort of way. "Alfie's eh, science experiment malfunctioned..."
"Oh," Mara went to get to her feet, "let me have a look."
"NO!" Alfie screamed looking to Jerome who grabbed Mara's arm and forced her to sit back down. "just Patricia and Fabian..." with that Alfie and Amber ran from the room with Fabian and Patricia following behind them after a glance to the adults in the kitchen.
The two burst into Alfie and Jerome's room knowing their fellow Sibuna's were on their tail.
"the signs say this has nothing to do with a science experiment," Patricia spoke up as she watched Alfie close the door and then barricade it with Jerome's desk chair.
"Has Vera handed either of you two a box?" Alfie asked them.
"or started chanting over the potatoes?" Amber added.
"Eh no..." Patricia asked looking at the pair in confusion, a feeling mirrored on Fabian's expression too. What were these two on about?
Alfie and Amber let out breaths of relief as they looked to one another. That didn't answer any of the questions coming to Patricia or Fabian's minds.
"w-what's this about?" Fabian asked the pair.
"Trudy's memory guy isn't a doctor at all," Amber informed them in a panicked voice. "he's a crook, a fake, a cheat, a fraud, a!"
"I think they get it, Amber," Alfie interrupted Amber's ever dramatic listing. "Vera wants to control us. She said so."
Patricia scoffed, "I'd like to see her try."
"We don't know why," Amber added in a quiet tone.
Fabian looked at them all, "when I was in Victor's office, I saw a Senet board set up, from where the pieces are it looked like he was good."
"why were you in Victors..." Amber trailed off as her eyes widened in realisation. Victor had finally come calling about Camilla's whereabouts.
Fabian nodded his head at the girl's unasked question, he told Victor the truth about where Camilla was. He had too. "He knows about Cam... He apparently has asked Vera to leave which is why Trudy is back in the house but the woman is refusing to leave. We could use his knowledge to bring Cam back..."
"so?" Alfie asked bring the conversation back to senet. "what we fire Joy and hire Victor... I know Cam trusts the dude but come on Fabian."
"it doesn't matter how good Victor is," Patricia argued, "he can't play on his own." There was a silence that fell as suddenly vera's control plan clicked into everyone's head. "Vera is looking for a way to get victor Pawns."
"well excuse me but I'm nobody's pawn." Amber commented. "they said the memory box worked on Trudy."
"It did," Patricia gestured to the door where they had all heard Trudy's talk about her holiday. "she is totally reprogramed."
"and they want to do the same to us." Alfie quietly mumbled.
"so, we find the loophole," Fabian responded, "Cam is always saying Magic always has a loophole, we just need to find this one... and fast."
