Hey guys, Liz here. Last we left off, Trunks and Vegeta finally showed up, and now it's about time for the Son family to enter the time chamber. How will this training go? Is the group ready to be cooped up together for nearly a year? Find out now.

The Son Squad Ch.48

Not long after that awkward moment between Chibiko and Trunks, the group got back on track. They wanted to press Trunks and Vegeta on their time inside, but Vegeta had Trunks keep quiet on their training. Why should he have to share that information with everyone else? He wasn't just going to tell all of them what he had up his sleeves, not if he was still gunning to take down Kakarot after Cell and the androids were taken care of.

"So basically, it went well," Goku stated after Vegeta had Trunks keep it down. He gave his rival a playful smirk, and Vegeta matched it back with a grimace of his own. Goku expected nothing less from Vegeta. He knew Vegeta wouldn't have taken so long in the chamber if there wasn't a good reason behind it.

"You'll see," Vegeta stated with his arms crossed over his chest. He's just always gotta be cocky. "Let's just say it'd be a waste of time for you and your brood to go and train. I'll deal with Cell and the androids all on my own."

"You can't be serious!" Tien proclaimed after hearing Vegeta say this. How could he think that he could do that? Vegeta had no idea how bad things had gotten within the past few hours. Tien honestly wanted to charge at Vegeta and shake him by his shoulders or something. He had seen Vegeta become cocky all too often and end up crawling off the battlefield with his head hung low. What made this time any different?

"Listen, Vegeta, it would be a mistake to underestimate these opponents," Piccolo jumped in, placing an arm up to prevent Tien from charging at Vegeta. He could sense the anger welling up inside Tien, and he knew that infighting would be a bad idea right now. (It was honestly the Kami in him trying to keep peace).

"It's pretty bad," Daichi spoke up, looking Vegeta right in the eyes as he spoke. "Cell absorbed one of the androids and got a few more cities while you guys were training. His power is off the charts."

"They're not wrong," Goku added in, trying to get Vegeta to understand just how dire things were. He wasn't worried about him, but Goku wanted Vegeta to know what he was in for by going to fight Cell. "I got a look for myself on the new Cell, and he's not like any other foe we've fought before."

Vegeta scoffed and rolled his eyes at these "warnings." He was certain that he could handle Cell. Besides, absorbing one of the androids meant he had one last piece of scrap metal to deal with. Fine by him. He had no quarrels about Cell getting the androids; it just meant less mess for him to clean up—the fewer opponents in his way, the better.

Meanwhile, at the edge of the Lookout, Chibi was pacing back and forth in an attempt to calm herself down from her interaction with Trunks. Her face was no longer tomato red, and her heart rate was coming down from its earlier excessive beating. She had to pull herself together. Now wasn't the time to be off in LaLa land thinking about Trunks. They had come to Lookout to train, not get lost in gorgeous blue eyes. "Get it together, Chibi," She muttered to herself as she finally stopped pacing. She took in a deep breath and slowly let it out. "Right now, you gotta focus on the training. Go past super saiyan, and help save this timeline and your own. No time to think about boys."

As she took in another set of deep breaths, Chibi heard what sounded like an engine coming from below the Lookout. She looked over the structure's edge to find a Capsule Corp plane rushing to the top. The young woman barely had time to dodge the vehicle as it came up and circled the Lookout before landing. Chibiko watched as Bulma stepped out of the plane with a little Trunks accompanying her. "Hey, Chibi," Bulma greeted the time traveler with a wave and a smile.

"Bulma, what are you doing here?" Chibiko asked, her heart rate coming back down to an average pace again.

"Krillin told me where you guys were hiding out, so I thought I'd stop by," Bulma answered as she pulled Trunks out of his car-seat. "I gave him the remote to shut down the androids, so hopefully, that'll be a big help to you guys."

"That's great to hear, Bulma," Chibi stated, a genuine smile coming to her face. She had been dealing with nothing but bad news all day long, so finally hearing that the shutdown device was operational was perfect timing. It also helped to momentarily distract her from her recent blushing session and think about the bigger picture.

Hearing the commotion, the others soon came out to see what was up and found Bulma and Chibi talking. The young mother immediately ran over to her future son upon seeing him with his now longer hair and newly acquired height. While she spoke to him and the conversation turned to why pure-blooded saiyans never needed a haircut, Daichi went over to Chibi with a devious smirk on his face. Oh boy. "What?" Chibi grumbled, having a bad feeling where this was going.

She glared at her older brother while he leaned over to whisper to her in a way that wouldn't draw anyone else's attention; "We all saw the way you were looking at Trunks," Daichi whispered. This was such a shift from his prior mood of down-trotted and disheartened. However, this side of Daichi was no stranger to Chibi. Whenever he got the chance to, Daichi liked to joke around with his sister and mess with her. I mean, what are siblings for, you know? Besides, he had always suspected something was up between Chibi and Trunks. That little interaction between the two earlier cemented his suspicions. "I think you have a little crush on hi-"

Chibi smacked Daichi across the face before he could finish and left a handprint on her older brother's cheek. The slap was so loud that it grabbed everyone else's attention. "….There was a bug," Chibi stated in a surprisingly calm manner. Not a hint of a blush anywhere. It seemed her anger towards Daichi was more potent than being flustered.

"Thanks…." Daichi stated, pretty much getting the hint from his sister to zip it. The last thing he wanted was to face his sister's ire. (He had seen it one too many times).

"…Well, anyway, I brought those new suits to give you guys," Bulma stated as she reached into her pants pocket. She then pulled out a small capsule and pressed down on it before throwing it. When the small dust cloud settled, a small wardrobe laid on the ground. "Vegeta asked me to make him a new suit a while back, and I got so good at making it that I thought to make some for the rest of you guys."

Not wanting to look a gift-horse in the mouth, the Sons all went to try out the new suits while Tien and Piccolo stood off to the sides. The last thing they wanted to wear was armor matching Vegeta. Still, it was surprising to see Goku give it a try.

"Wow, this reminds me of the suits we wore on Namek," Gohan remarked as he picked up an outfit for himself.

"And they're actually kinda soft," Daichi stated as he felt the fabric for the suit. "Although, I feel like we'll look like those singers in an idol group that wear the same clothes."

"You wouldn't happen to have a changing room in this dresser, would you, Bulma?" Chibi asked after finding the stuff she needed for her size.

"No, sorry, Chibi," Bulma replied. She hadn't really thought about adding something like that into the wardrobe. That would be something to put down for future notice.

"Guess I can go around the building real quick," Chibi shrugged. It wasn't a big deal, but she definitely didn't want to change clothes in front of her dad, brothers, Tien, Piccolo, Vegeta, and especially Trunks!

"I'll come with you," Chiyo stated and followed after the future girl to go change. This whole thing reminded her of changing clothes back on Namek, and it slightly made her cheeks red, remembering that entire mess.

Before leaving, Chibi noticed a pair of scissors in one of the drawers and picked them up to take with her.

As the two young women went to change, Goku couldn't help but be confused by the whole thing. "What's the big deal about changing out here?" He asked as he slipped off his shirt.

"Goku, are you serious?!" Bulma shouted at him, taking the saiyan back a bit. The fact that he didn't get what was wrong with the situation just infuriated her. He should've known after all that time traveling with her that changing in front of others was completely inappropriate for girls. "Have you no tack?!"

"What did I say?" Goku questioned, genuinely confused about it all. He had no clue why he was being yelled at. He thought he had done nothing wrong by asking.

Gohan just shook his head while Daichi face palmed himself.

"I didn't realize Pops was so clueless," Daichi noted to Gohan.

"You get used to it," Gohan simply told Daichi.

Meanwhile, Chibi and Chiyo quickly were getting changed to meet back up with the others before Trunks and Vegeta decided to leave. As Chiyo was slipping her head through the blue tights, she looked over to Chibi and noticed several scars on her arms and shoulders as she took off her jacket. They looked to be old ones that were slowly healing up, with one nasty one cutting across the entirety of her upper back. It looked like it had been deep when it had been made.

I never realized how many scars Chibi had on her, Chiyo thought to herself as she found herself staring at Chibi's back. She never thought she'd see such horribly deep scars on anyone's back, let alone her younger sister from the future. I wonder if the androids did that to her.

Looking over her shoulder, Chibi noticed Chiyo staring at her, and the younger girl quickly turned away, pretending like she hadn't been just staring. Chibi sighed and slipped off her tank top before slipping into the tights to put on. "17 did that to me," Chibi spoke, answering Chiyo's unconscious question. She then slipped the tights over her shoulders, covering up most of the scars. "It was a few years back. I was trying to rescue Daichi and Trunks while Chinku was distracting the androids. She didn't get very far in the distracting, and before long, 17 got me from behind with Trunks' own sword. Trunks felt kinda guilty about it, but I told him not to worry about it. All I said was to keep better watch of his sword for next time."

"…Oh…I see…Sorry for, uh, staring," Chiyo stated, fixing up her boots. It felt like she was probing into something too personal to discuss. "That…that must've been awful."

"Hey, it's nothing, really," Chibi replied. "You get used to these things."

But you shouldn't have to get used to things like that, Chiyo thought to herself. No one should.

As the duo continued to change, Chiyo started to think more about her future younger sister. Looking back on all she had seen, Chiyo noticed something that she had noticed with the other older women in her life; their constant shifting mood swings. Chibi's mood swings were especially wild. One minute she was calm and collected; the next minute, she was angry and volatile, and then she could change to being flustered and embarrassed. It was like someone flipping a switch and changing her moods. This was yet another woman she had met whose attitude seemed to shift on a dime. Seeing Chibi act this way seemed to further push this idea that she too would be just like her mother, Bulma, and younger sister in the future; good one minute and then upset the next. I don't want to ask her about it too much. Besides, we've got more important things to do than talk about that stuff.

It seemed so odd that that was what stuck out to Chiyo about Chibi in this time of crisis. Why was she so concerned about what she could possibly be like in the future? Was it because her birthday was coming up? Or was this some way for her to cope with everything going on? Maybe it was a mix of both. Either way, the oldest of the Son girls would have to push that aside for now and focus on the mission at hand.

When they were both changed into their new training gear, Chibi placed her long hair into a single ponytail behind her back. She took the scissors that she had gotten from the wardrobe out and handed them to Chiyo. "Hey, can you do me a favor real quick?"

"Sure, what is it?" Chiyo asked, confused as to what the older girl was wanting to do.

Meanwhile, back with the guys, they were already changed and ready to get started. Vegeta had already left to deal with Cell, and Trunks was about to leave when Chibi and Chiyo showed back up to wish him good luck. When he saw Chibi round the corner, he was blown away to find that her usually long hair was cut to a super short bob cut style. She always prided herself on her lengthy hair, and now she had practically cut it all off.

"You cut your hair?" Trunks asked, confused as to why his friend would do something like that.

"Yep. I figured being in the time chamber for about a year would be a hassle to have with extra-long hair, so I thought about cutting it short," Chibi answered matter-of-factly, trying to keep from blushing again. "Besides, it'll be back to its normal length by the time you see me again."

"It's just…it's been a while since I've seen you with short hair, that's all," Trunks stated. His face slightly became tinted into a red color, and he wasn't sure why. He never usually was like this around Chibi. Then again, to him, it had been a year since he had seen her. Maybe he just missed her and her snarky comebacks? "It…looks nice on you."

Chibi did her best to remain stoic as well, but she could feel the slight blush coming to her face. She started rubbing her arm a bit and looked away to avoid eye contact with Trunks. The more she looked at him, the more flustered she became. Crap, I look like an idiot right now! Say something, Chibi! "Anyway, good luck with Cell. Be careful, and don't get yourself killed, okay?"

"Don't worry. I'll be careful. And good luck with your training with your Dad and the others." Once that little goodbye was done, Trunks was off to deal with Cell. He was gone faster than anybody could blink. Even after he was gone from sight, Chibi's face felt mildly red.

"Welp, it's time to get down to business," Goku stated. "Time to start training."

Walking into the hyperbolic time chamber, Gohan, Chiyo, Daichi, and Chibiko weren't sure what to expect. They had only gotten a brief glimpse at it when Trunks and Vegeta had entered and exited the place, and even then, they couldn't quite make out what the site was all about. They were momentarily blinded by an ample light coming from inside, so none of the quartet was sure what to expect.

Once they walked entirely in, the group found what looked to be living quarters of sorts. There were five separate mattresses laid about in the room, with three on one side and two on the other; a small table was in the middle of the room with five chairs around it; to the left of the entrance was a door that possibly led to a bathroom; then there was what looked to be a storage room stacked high with jars of food; the ceiling looked to be in the style of a clock with one large hand that looked ready to move any second now, and this was just the living space! They still hadn't explored what was beyond it.

Right as they were looking at everything in sight, the door closed. The way it shut seemed to solidify that there was no going back from this training. They would be here for close to a year, maybe even longer if the need arose.

"So, this is the room of spirit and time, huh?" Chiyo stated as she looked around the place. "It's…so strange."

"I feel heavier than before," Daichi remarked, flexing his hands open and closed. "It's almost hard to breathe."

"And it's pretty bright in here, too," Gohan commented as he looked out to the corridor beyond the pillars, not quite sure awaited them beyond the living space. "Maybe we should've brought some sleep masks for when we go to sleep."

"Yep, that's the room for ya," Goku said, remembering his brief time in the chamber as a young boy. He had almost forgotten what it was like to train in here for a month, but as soon as he stepped foot inside, he was instantly reminded of the grueling training he had undergone. Now, though, it didn't seem as challenging. Maybe it was because he was a young boy when he went in the first time; perhaps it was because he was stronger now than then, or maybe it was because no actual training had started yet. Who knows. Guess he'd find out soon enough. "Also, once the door is closed, we're completely cut off from the outside world. All of you try and see if you can sense Vegeta or Cell. You'll see what I mean."

Doing as their Dad asked, the four half-saiyans tried sensing for Cell or Vegeta and got nothing. Not even the tiniest acknowledgment of either fighters' energy whatsoever.

"Holy cow, it's like everything disappeared," Chibi spoke after searching for almost half a minute.

"Don't start freaking out, Chibi," Goku joked, knowing that the teen was just in shock right now. "Now, the bathroom is over there, and the food is over there. Mr. Popo almost tripled the amount of food inside, so we should be good for a year. And then outside is the training area."

"Now we're talking," Daichi commented, cracking his knuckles at the idea of finally getting down to business. Wanting to check it out for himself, he walked out of the living area to see what this place had to offer and nearly fell over at what he saw, which was nothing. Nothingness stretching for miles in every direction. "…H-H-H-H-How?"

"Daichi, what is it?" Chibi questioned, walking out to get a look for herself. When she saw the open space, she too was dumbfounded by what laid before her. "There's….there's nothing here."

The others soon joined the two future warriors, and the twins instantly became just as shocked.

"How can a place like this exist in a room?" Gohan questioned as he tried to find some discernable landmark or something like that. There had to be more to this than just empty-white space. "I mean, it's bigger than the Lookout."

"No kidding," Chiyo stated as she looked out over the vastness. "Is there anything out there at all?"

"Nope. It just goes on for miles and miles," Goku answered, a smile on his face as he looked out over everything. "It's a bad idea to wander out too far from here. There's nothing more than emptiness in every direction you go. It'll be good for all of us to train kinda close to the door. Besides, we gotta watch out for the temperature swings, too."

"Temperature swings?" the twins asked at the same time.

"Yeah. It goes on both ends of the extreme here. From over 100 degrees to below 0, this place can become brutal. The air is also twice as thin here, and the gravity is about 10x that of Earth. There's really no rhyme or reason to any of it, either, so we'll have to keep that in mind while we're training."

Daichi started to think back to a day prior and Piccolo's remarks to Goku about barely surviving this place for a month when he was a kid. Hearing all this made the young man realize why Piccolo was slightly concerned about it. Even going super saiyan here sounded like it wouldn't help much. What did we get ourselves into? This is insane!

Dropping his smile, Goku walked out ahead of his kids and onto the ground. The others soon followed after him, and just stepping out, knocked them all off their feet. Gohan and Chiyo instantly fell to their knees, and Daichi and Chibi followed soon after. None of them expected to be pushed down right away.

"Didn't see that coming," Gohan huffed as he tried to get up from off the ground.

"It's like the world pushing down on me," Chiyo panted as she tried to stand up with no luck at first.

"Well, gravity training isn't a cake-walk, Chiyo. Believe me; I know all too well," Goku said, extended his hand out for the young girl to take. As soon as she put her hand in his, he pulled Chiyo to her feet. The young girl almost fell over again, but she quickly steadied herself out before standing independently. "It's just something your body will have to get used to, that's all."

As the four gained their bearings, Goku laid out his plan for the training:

"Okay, first thing's first: Gohan, Chiyo, we're gonna get you two to both go super saiyan."

"What? Are you serious, Dad?" Gohan blinked in surprise. He knew that he would get in some training while here, sure, but he didn't think that his Dad's first priority in all of this would be to get him and his sister to go super saiyan. Shouldn't his Father's first priority be to get stronger himself to face Cell?

"Is it even possible for us to go super saiyan, Dad?" Chiyo questioned her father.

"Of course," Goku replied back with a smile. "You two being super saiyans will be a huge help. It'll make the training more intense. Besides, why wouldn't you both be able to? If Chibi and Daichi can do it, then so can you. I can spend some time teaching you two how to transform. Once that's done, we'll get into the real training." He then turned to Daichi and Chibiko. "You two can go ahead and train with each other while I teach these two the ropes for going super saiyan. That way, you don't have to wait for the three of us."

"You sure, Pops?" Daichi questioned, looking between himself and Chibiko. He had no objections about training with his sister, but he thought that his Dad should be the one to train to go farther beyond super saiyan while he and Chibi trained Gohan and Chiyo. "We can train the twins, and you can train on your own."

"No, you guys don't have to do that. I want you both to focus on getting stronger. With everything you both have been through, I think it'd be best to have you both help Trunks and Future Chinku take care of things in your timeline, you know what I mean?"

"Still, we can help Gohan and Chiyo with their training," Chibi chimed in, placing her hands on her hips. "After all, Daichi and I are both half-saiyans. It'd be good for us to help teach the twins since we kinda know where they're coming from."

Goku hadn't really thought of that. In all honesty, he thought that Daichi and Chibiko would've jumped at the opportunity to train by themselves while he taught Gohan and Chiyo how to go super saiyan. He meant what he said about them being able to take care of their own timeline. He and the other Z-fighters weren't there to help anymore, and these two needed to be able to take care of their world once they went back home. Besides, he wanted all his kids to take care of themselves and the world one day. He had been thinking about how he wasn't going to be around forever. Someday, his own children would probably have to step up and take care of the Earth in his absence, and he wanted them to be ready if that need ever arose. "Well, I guess it can't hurt to have you guys help me out," Goku stated after thinking it all over.

"Hold on a second," Chiyo spoke up, grabbing everyone's attention. Once she realized everyone was looking over at her, the young girl became shy and looked to the ground. "Well…it's just…this whole thing will slow you guys down. Gohan and I don't want to hinder your training."

"Hey, don't worry too much," Goku assured his daughter, adding in his smile as a way to further ensure her. "You're overthinking it." The father of five walked over to Gohan and Chiyo and got on his knees to look at both of them. He could see the hesitation in their eyes, and he wanted to assure them that this would all be for the best. "Once you two become super saiyans, the training will go a lot better for all of us."

"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's get started!" Daichi suddenly declared, a smile on his face. "We've only got a year. It'll be over before we know it."

"Still…." Gohan muttered to himself, thinking this whole thing over. "You guys said Chiyo and I went super saiyan in your time, and even then, we weren't a match for the androids."

"So what? This timeline is different from ours," Chibi pointed out to Gohan. "Dad and the others are still here, and you've got more backup with me, Daichi, and Trunks here as well. Besides, you used to tell us to never quit, even in the face of adversity. I'm not about to let you quit on me, so both of you better suck it up. Got it?"

Realizing that there was no backing out of this, the twins looked between each other. Neither of them needed a psychic conversation to know what the other was thinking; now was their time to step up to the plate and help save the world. They smiled and nodded to one another before turning to face their future siblings and Father. "Let's do it," They both said.

"All right. Let the training begin."

"That's the spirit," Goku cheered, a small grin coming to his face. "I want us all to push each other to go beyond our limits. I plan to go beyond super saiyan, and I want all of you to become stronger than me."

"Huh?!" All four siblings gasped. They turned to look at their Dad and found that he was serious about this proclamation. Or maybe they were just reading into it? Perhaps the pressure finally went to his head.

"Dad, you can't be serious," Gohan half-laughed. "There's no way we could ever be stronger than you."

"Dad, are you sure you took all the medicine for the heart virus?" Chiyo questioned her Father, concerned that he was possibly still ill.

"I'm serious, guys," Goku stated. "I want you all to become stronger than me."

The next day

Gohan thought his lungs were going to give out any minute. He knew the training would be challenging, but this was just brutal. This was unlike any training he had endured before. After a day of just walking around and getting used to the chamber and its environment, Gohan and Chiyo spent hours trying to unlock the super saiyan transformation. They spent hours trying to "dig deep" like his Father and future siblings instructed, but it was easier said than done. All that seemed to come out of the whole ordeal was frustration and burning lungs.

About halfway through the "day," Gohan and Chiyo fell over due to their bodies' strain. Both laid panting on the ground, trying to catch their breaths after what felt like absolute torture.

To the sides, Goku, Daichi, and Chibi sighed and shook their heads. The twins just weren't getting it yet. The trio had explained it to them repeatedly, but it didn't seem to be doing much for the twins.

"Anything….yet?" Chiyo panted, barely able to sit up from her spot on the ground.

"Not even a small glimmer, sis," Daichi brutally stated to his sister.

Going over to the twins, Goku squatted down next to them and extended both his hands for the twins to take. "Why don't you two take a break?" He suggested.

Looking at the extended hands before them, Gohan and Chiyo briefly stared at them before refusing them and going to stand up on their own.

"There's no time for breaks," Gohan told his Father with his eyes narrowed. "We need to keep going."

"We came here to train, not have a vacation," Chiyo stated in an equally challenging manner.

"I get that, guys, but your bodies still aren't quite used to the chamber yet, and there's nothing wrong with that," Goku stated. "Why not take a small break? We still have practically a year to-"

"We can't just rest!" Gohan snapped, his muscles tensing at his Father's suggestion of a break. His eyes suddenly changed to blue right in front of everyone as he glared at Goku directly. "Everyone's in danger, so we don't have time to be resting! Chiyo and I are just wasting time because we can't go super saiyan!"

This was the first time Daichi and Chibi were ever seeing this. The Gohan they knew had anger issues, yes, but this was different. Somehow, this felt more ominous. Seeing Gohan in this state of anger was…frightening. Not to mention his eyes flashing to blue without going super saiyan was indeed odd. They had never seen anything like this before.

Goku didn't move as his son glared him down. He wasn't sure what to expect from Gohan when he was like this. This was just like back when on Namek and those last days of training before the androids showed up. He wasn't sure what it was, though. Maybe it was super saiyan, but there was also the distinct possibility that it could be something else entirely. "Gohan-"

"Why won't you listen to me?!" Gohan shouted before taking a swing at his Dad. Gohan's fist moved so fast that Goku almost didn't have time to dodge it. However, the swing didn't make contact with his face, meaning Goku was safe from an awful black eye. That didn't mean he was out of the woods, though, because Gohan looked ready to go for another swing.

Before he could, though, Chiyo rushed in and grabbed Gohan from behind. She then wrapped her arms around his neck and squeezed tightly. This wasn't any sort of chokehold, though; it was a sort-of backward hug. She hated seeing her brother's temper flare up like this. He was like a completely different person when he was like this, a person Chiyo didn't like at all.

Feeling the sudden pressure from behind, Gohan turned to look Chiyo's way, slightly glaring at her.

It's okay, Chiyo told Gohan through telepathic thought, keeping a calm expression as she hugged him less tightly now. Breathe, Gohan. Breathe.

Slightly shifting a bit in Chiyo's hold, Gohan closed his eyes and took in a slow breath of air before releasing it back out. This was followed by another deep breath and then another exhale. The third set of breathing slowly followed, and once the third set was done, Gohan opened his eyes to reveal that they were no longer blue. …It happened again, didn't it? Gohan asked his sister, feeling ashamed for what had happened.

It's all right, Chiyo reassured her brother. Let's just take a break for a minute, okay?

Chiyo released her hold on Gohan and walked back towards the chamber living space to rest without saying a word. Gohan followed after her, and by the way, he was walking, he looked like a dog with his tail caught between his legs.

Goku, meanwhile, was thinking about what happened, and one thought came to mind:. …It's just like I thought, Gohan: you're gonna be stronger than me for sure.

Training is underway for the kids and their Dad. Will Daichi and Chibi be able to help Goku teach the kids super saiyan? Or does Gohan have something he can teach all of them? Find out next time on the Son Squad!
