Yumi was washing the dishes while Ulrich was taking a shower. She was rinsing the last plate when random thoughts crossed her mind. Had she locked her front door? Was the window above the balcony's door closed? What were their friends doing? Would Ulrich scream if she turned off the cold water tap? She eyed the neatly placed plates, glasses and other things in the drying rack, then looked at the empty sink. Yumi had an evil grin on her face as her hand grabbed the knob for cold water and closed it, while the hot water kept running.
Sure enough Ulrich made a sound which she thought he wasn't capable of. "Well, that was a high pitch," she giggled and then started laughing out loud. Ulrich came out of the bathroom during her (still ongoing) laughing fit and stood there in his dark green sweatpants. He was drying his hair with his towel, then hung it over his shoulder afterwards. Ulrich crossed his arms. "Really?" He dryly said as he entered the kitchen.
Yumi was calmer now, but still chuckled away. She was wiping the kitchen counter with a dishcloth and wasn't looking at Ulrich. He had gone to stand behind her. "You know, I really wonder what the others are doing right now," Yumi completely ignored him. "Oh, really?" His tone changed and she could tell he wasn't taking her seriously. However, who would when it was this obvious what had happened?
She turned around when everything was clean and she had washed her hands. "I'm sor-," Yumi stopped talking when she saw he was shirtless. Empty laughter now rang in the air. "Is this payback?" She asked, trying to avert her gaze to the interesting chair behind her boyfriend. "No," he said, moving forward to get a glass from the cupboard above Yumi's head. "Oh, watch your head," he took hold of her back with his left hand and pulled her closer so the door wouldn't bump against her. His mocking tone was audible. "Are you sure?" She asked him while her face grew warmer. "Yep," he answered plainly and moved to the sink, taking Yumi with him by her waist. "I'm not convinced," she said. "Nor am I," he countered.
Ulrich stared at her for a moment before he filled his glass with cold water. "You are not planning something stupid, are you?" Yumi couldn't see what he was doing because she was trapped. "I'm only holding a glass of water, relax," he chuckled. "No, wait! It was an accident. I didn't really do that on purpose. I thought I had turned off both hot and cold water, but I guess I failed," she tried in vain. "Too bad," he commented. Yumi thought about how she would have to up her defences around this side of Ulrich.
"You're not getting out," he warned her. "Until you feel the same." Alarm bells went off in her head and she attempted to escape. In the process she knocked into his hand that held the glass. Ulrich was a little startled and couldn't avoid what happened next. The contents of his glass poured over Yumi's head and back. "That's not what I had in mind," he told her. "Ugh, that's cold," she complained. "Yes, it was cold," he snickered, referring to his own recent experience.
"Okay, so now we're even," she said, nodding to herself. "No harm done, I'll go home after you go to bed." Yumi hadn't forgotten her purpose for coming here. Ulrich laughed. "Yes, yes, ma'am. First, you take a shower. I'll give you clean clothes. Then you may go home. If you catch a cold, I'll never survive Monday," he shook his head and guided her to the bathroom. "I'll clean up the mess in the kitchen. I swear I won't pull the same trick," his voice held an honesty she was familiar with.
"I'll hit you if you do," she said anyway. "I can take a hit," he claimed and smiled innocently at her. It just made her smile. "I'll be accepting your generous offer," she said and closed the bathroom door behind her.
When that door opened again, only her head peeked out. "Uhm, you don't have any smaller sized clothes?" She asked. "No, I threw out everything that didn't fit," Ulrich, now wearing a T-shirt, convincingly told a lie from his spot on the sofa. Of course he had some older clothes, but this was more fun. "Great," she looked down. "I'm like a kid playing with her parents' clothes," Yumi assessed herself. He had picked out casual grey sports pants that she had to fold over twice at her waist with a good part of the material folding over the elastic ending of each pipe. The chosen shirt was black and had a small sword printed on it in yellow on the left side above her hip. The sleeves were too long and the shirt's neckline was on the broad side.
"The clothes suit you though," he wasn't lying about that. "I do like them," she grinned. "And your socks are adorable," she stared at her feet. Cats' ears and whiskers were visible. "Odd?" She suspected. "Yes, it was a birthday gift," he groaned. "Have you ever worn them?" Yumi asked. Ulrich just stared at the sock. "No," he responded plainly again. She chuckled. "Poor Odd."
"Thanks for the outfit. Now, go to bed," she ordered. He eyed the clock. It was 07:40PM. "Too early," he whined. She dragged him to his room. Yumi pointed to his bed. "Go," she emphasized once more. He reluctantly sat down. "I need to lock the door after you leave," he reminded her. "Oh yeah, you do." The thought of taking his keys briefly raced through her mind. "Since you can't take my keys," he slowly got up again and took his phone from the side table. Yumi's phone rang shortly afterwards.
She picked up and looked at him. "Is this going to be happening regularly?" Ulrich grinned. "If you keep talking to me, I won't have a chance to do something else, right?" He explained. Yumi was dubious about that. Ulrich softly guided her through his apartment so she could pick up her stuff on the way to the door. "Switch to video when you get home," he told her.
Thus, that is what she did when she sauntered into her room. The trip to her apartment hadn't taken long, but it had been slightly chilly outside. She was glad Ulrich had given her warm clothes. Ulrich told her a story about Odd in the time it took Yumi to get from his place to hers. A story from the past.
She stared at her bed. If she was going to keep talking to him, the bed would be more comfortable. "It's really hard to believe that Odd actually rejected a girl!" Ulrich nodded. "Yep, the girl was gorgeous but it was like there was another Sissi. Those were his words," he added. Yumi laughed as she sat down on the bed to take off her socks.
"Oh, I have something to tell you too. Hiroki told me my dad is going to be meeting his good friend tomorrow and believe it or not, they are actually going to a dojo to watch a martial arts contest. I asked him if it would be alright if we come too. He said it was fine and that he looked forward to seeing you again," she revealed. "It's in the afternoon a little after lunch. Do you want to go?" She asked.
Ulrich was interested. "That sounds great. I haven't been to one of those for years now," he admitted. Yumi was relieved. At least, he was willing to relax. "That's good, so you'll come?" She checked again. Ulrich shook his head. "It will be difficult. My mother is coming over tomorrow morning…"
Disappointment run through her. "That's too bad." She thought it a good opportunity to take his mind off the stressful things for a short period, until they had to start brainstorming about work again. Yumi fell back onto her pillow. "Her visits are always short. She is probably coming over for a reason. And it's most likely something I won't be happy with. Otherwise, she pretty much leaves me alone," he sounded depressed again. "I'll be on my way there, right after I'm done."
She noticed he was lying down, so she shuffled into a similar position. "Okay, I'll tell my dad that you might be a little later then," Yumi said. She yawned a few seconds later.
"Are you tired?" He asked.
"A little. Might be due to the cool air outside. It's not warm here either."
"I'm going to switch off the lights," he announced. She heard a 'click' and watched the screen go back to a simple caller ID screen. Yumi did the same and lay her phone next to her.
They continued their conversation. Yumi would tell a story from her past, then Ulrich would tell one of his and that repeated itself a few times. A while later they talked about times they spent together and how they wished more of those moments would follow in the future. Both of them gradually became more tired as time passed. Eventually sleep came over them like the warmth that had spread throughout their bodies. That night, Ulrich and Yumi were connected in more than one way.
