Series 2, Episode 87 ~ House of Missions

Anubis house was its normal bustling self once again.

Both Camilla and Nina enjoyed long refreshing showers the moment they could, neither Alfie nor Fabian complaining when Camilla raced into their bathroom to do so. The girl finally pulling on a fresh pair of clothes, though she had lent to more comfortable clothing than fashionable ones; pulling Fabian's t-shirt on before following it with one of Jerome's hoodies as she chewed on a sandwich so large that even Eddie would be impressed with it. Nina smiled over at her having finally blown dried her hair after Camilla. The two girls were feeling so much better after their showers but Camilla was still deadly pale with dark circles under her eyes. It be a while before the girl was back to 100% but Nina wished she'd never see Camilla in the state she had been in within the tunnels.

"I see the Chosen One has returned with her Protector..."

An audible groan of annoyance left Camilla's mouth as she and Nina glanced to Amber's side of the room where the Spirit of Senkhara had decided to show up. Their day was going so well and then that bitch had to make an entrance to remind them all of their task still at hand.

Senkhara's lip curled as she heard Camilla's groan, the spirit was as happy to see the unpleasant and unrespectful Protector as the Protector was to see her. "I see you do not have the mask." She cordially told them in disgust.

"We will get it," Nina promised her glad Camilla had stuffed her mouth so she couldn't sass the spirit though from the furious chewing the female twin was doing she it wouldn't be long before Camilla could start talking back. "I promise."

"Your friends had the key and they disregarded it." The spirit hissed at the pair.

"That's because they chose to save us!" Camilla turned on the spirit taking a step forward, Nina watching in shock as the spirit took a step back. At the start of this madness, the two girls would have been afraid of the power of the spirit, but now as they were close to the end Camilla had managed to do so much that the spirit was in fear of the girl's power.

"The Mask is Unique... The Chosen One is not," The Spirit told the pair.

"Say that again..." Camilla growled the lights in the room flashing dangerously causing Nina to step forward and put a hand on Camilla to try to calm her down noticing the blood coming down from her nose. The girl was not in the state to be using magic, she was looking better but Nina had seen how badly she had been affected by the magic sapping. It would be a very long time before Camilla was back to full capacity to do magic once again. "I dare you," the challenge hung in the air between the Protector and the Spirit like a rogue icicle that could fall and impale anyone at any second.

"The Chosen One isn't the only one needed. It appears that the old powers are true about the new dynasty..." the woman hissed at the pair.

"You found The Osirian," Camilla spoke causing Nina to look between the Spirit and Camilla in curiosity. Something about what the girl said caused something in her to awaken almost. A warmth flooding her. Why did that name sound so familiar and comforting to her? Of course right then and there was not the time for Nina to ask Camilla these questions especially with Senkhara with them.

"Yes... The Osirian," Senkhara agreed with Camilla nodding her head, looking impressed at the girl's knowledge. She might be a pain but the girl knew of the myths of old apparently. "my patience has run dry with your little team." The spirit told the pair, "the old one will die first, at sundown tomorrow." She bluntly spoke.

"Gran?!" Nina asked in a panic, painfully grabbing Camilla's arm. they couldn't let her gran die. "No!"

The Spirit ignored the girl's pleas to look to her determined protector, "then who will I take next? The pretty girl or the clown? Or the angry one? Or the Chosen One's precious lover? Whoever it is be sure to know I will strike you down last Birkh, you shall see your friends fall and not be able to do anything!"

"Don't you dare! If you hurt any of them you will wish you had never been born," Camilla hissed; she was not to be tested at the moment. She was slowly getting more and more annoyed with the spirit and she just wanted the bitch to go die in the duat like she should have done years before.

"the boy may be too important to perish," the spirit told the pair looking at the protector with fear in her eyes.

"What Fabian?" Nina whispered, "what do you mean?"

"you have until sundown tomorrow, and then I will keep my promise and claim your lives!" the spirit threatened before disappearing with a fading laugh.

They were headed into a fight for their lives, why did Camilla get the feeling this wouldn't be the first time they would be facing something like this in their lives as team Sibuna.

Nina rushed off from the girl's bedroom to call a Sibuna meeting, they needed to tell their friends about the new time limit they had been given to get the mask. Camilla however had decided that what she needed was a huge mug of tea. Yes, the Senkhara thing was super bad, but there was no time dwelling on the inevitable doom she was going to strike upon them. They needed to think ahead and prepare themselves and in order for Camilla to be on her A-Game, she needed a huge mug of tea.

Even from the kitchen, Camilla could hear the rattle of Victor's office door as it slammed shut. The man had found something out and from the shaking of the glass panels, as Camilla wandered into the hallway holding two cups of tea, she could tell he wasn't happy.

Victor didn't look up from his desk, his head in his hands until a cup had been gently placed onto his desk. He knew from the lack of saucer under the mug that it was Camilla who was stood on the other side of his desk. The man looked up at her as he took the mug looking at the girl as she turned to the window as Amber trotted up the stairs talking to Alfie behind them Nina who was trying to frantically get the pair to move faster but it wasn't happening.

Camilla looked deathly pale, the girl's dark under-eye circles only adding to the deadly look, though a warm flush was creeping onto her cheeks from the warm drink in her hand. Victor could tell she had overdone it, she had used too much magic and become deadly close to burning up – literally.

The man let out a sigh, "when are you going to take care of yourself?" Victor asked the young girl.

"I take care of myself just fine." Camilla was quick to retort turning back to look at Victor.

The man raised an eyebrow at her, "switching places with Miss Martin during a Senet game." Was all he said causing an eye roll from Camilla.

"you said it was my job to protect them."

"How are you going to do that when you are trapped under the school."

"easy," Camilla smiled at him, "because no matter where I go I know I have you and Fabian who would go to the ends of the earth to come to find me if I was in trouble."

The man couldn't help the smile that crept onto his face at the girl's words, glancing down at Vera's phone on the table. He should have sided with the Protector from the start and now he was regretting not doing so.

"I'm sorry..." Camilla spoke softly, so softly that if it hadn't been for the comforting silence that had fallen between the pair he was sure he'd have missed it. Victor glanced at Camilla to see she was looking at the phone as well. Everyone in Anubis house would be able to recognise it instantly, due to the woman's rather iron-like grip on it. "that Vera was who I said she was." Camilla met his gaze with a small sad smile. "you know, I honestly had hoped I was wrong. You deserve some happiness."

Before Victor could say anything, thunderous footsteps could be heard and Camilla glanced around to see a panicked looking Patricia racing up the stairs. Something had happened. Camilla took one glance at Victor before putting her tea down on his desk and racing after the girl. She needed to know what she had found out.

"Bad. Bad. Bad news." Patricia spoke as she pushed open the door, not noticing Camilla on her heel slipping into the girl's bedroom behind her as she looked around at the forlorn-looking Sibuna's crowded around Nina's bed.

"Trust me," Amber started looking to the gothic girl, "nothing you could say could make this day any worse."

"Rufus has taken Jerome."

"WHAT?!" Camilla's cry from the door caused all of them to turn to face her seeing her distressed look on her face. "I need to go..." Camilla turned to race from the room but was stopped as Fabian ran over and grabbed his sister, "we need to save Jerome!" she told him trying to fight his grip but failing.

"Rufus..." Alfie muttered pretty much in the same boat as Camilla. They needed to go rescue the boy.

"And I'm wrong..." Amber muttered quietly giving her best friend a sympathetic look as she tried to battle Fabian without hurting the boy.

Eddie looked on curiously from the kitchen as Mara frantically typed away on her laptop.

"you know I don't understand what Jerome is playing at. No emails. No text's nothing." She muttered. "come on Jerome, where are you?"

"so..." Eddie couldn't help but speak up as he wandered out of the kitchen with a bag of crisps in hand. "are you and him like...a thing now?"

"What?!" Mara asked the boy, "Me and Jerome? No!"

"Good means he's still a free agent for Camilla." Eddie grinned wandering over noticing Mara frown at what he said.

"Why would you think me and Jerome...?" Mara prompted the boy.

"Well, other than Cam you are the only person who seems to have noticed the boy is missing and is worried about it. You two are always laughing together..." Eddie shrugged as he sat down. "you are one of the few people he seems to treat like a human person."

"Yeah right..." Mara teased, "well it's just I care about him, that's all. I want to know he's alright."

"so if Cam asks him out..." Eddie inquired.

"she is free to do so... because I'm with Mick..." from the raised eyebrow even Eddie didn't believe Mara as she said the words. "it's just, complicated okay..." Mara sighed slightly shutting her laptop to look at the American boy who let out a laugh.

"Trust me, I know complicated." Eddie told her kindly, "so what's the problem?"

Mara sighed slightly thinking over the boy's question. "Mick..." she honestly spoke, "and a little Camilla if I'm being honest..."

"Captain Australia?" Eddie asked Mara, "what's your glorified penpal doing?"

"Oh no, he is far more than that."

"then what's wrong with Cam?"

Mara sighed once again, "I see the way Jerome looks at her when he thinks she isn't looking." Eddie raised his eyebrows at the honestly but before he could say anything more Mara rounded on him, "while we are dishing out advice; when are you going to tell Patricia that she's actually in a relationship?"

Eddie couldn't help but laugh at that bit of advice. How was he meant to tell the most stubborn girl in the world that she had landed herself in a serious relationship? "good luck with your... complications..." he told the girl with a smile before getting to his feet and leaving Mara to dwell.

"Because I'm with Mick..." Mara repeated the words again. They felt icky in her mouth but she didn't know why. She loved Mick, but why did the idea of Camilla and Jerome annoy her so much.

"G'DAY!"

Mara's head whipped around at the sound of Mick's voice. The boy was stood in the living room, arms open looking at Mara with a wide smile on his face.

"MICK!" Mara gasped in surprise, "what are you doing here?"

"I flew over with my dad," he told her with a smile.

"I was just about to message you in Australia."

"as you can see... I'm not there." He teased Mara, the girl getting to her feet and hugging him. Her boy complication had just got far more complicated.

Nina looked around at the Sibuna's in her room. It took them a little bit of persuasion, as well as the promise they would go to rescue Jerome after they figured out a plan before Camilla would calm down but the girl was still fidgeting as if she was ready to race from the house at any moment to go save the boy from Rufus.

"alright Sibuna's here's the plan," Nina spoke up sounding a lot more confident than how she felt. "Patricia, Alfie... Twins," she looked towards Camilla's bed where the twins were sat. if it wasn't for Fabian Nina knew the girl would have charged from the house the moment Patricia had told them about Jerome. Nina also knew there was no way in hell anything would stop the girl from going to save her future boo and Fabian would be following behind her so it was better to just include them in her plans. "first thing tomorrow morning, you guys go to the barn."

"We rescue Jerome and murder Rufus for taking him." Camilla all but growled causing the lights to flicker faintly. She had gotten better with her emotions and magic but every now and then she still slipped up.

"Murder...?" Nina repeated quietly causing Camilla to look her way with a determined look in her eye. "anyway, while you guys do that Amber and I will go see if we can find a way to open that mask cabinet."

Amber rolled her eyes. Her friends got to go see Camilla be badass and she was on Mask duty. Lame. She wanted to be there to cheer on the Jamilla reunion. "Pity Frobisher-Smythe couldn't leave a spare key under the mat like any normal person."

Nina looked thoughtful. The girl's words sparking an idea in her mind. "Wait, what if he did?" she looked around the room at the Sibuna's who were either leaning on Camilla and Amber's beds or sat on top of them to see blank looks from all. "Remember Trudy's dollhouse clue?"

"About a key in the seat of learning," Fabian answered not fully understanding the American girls thought process, though he was focusing more on his sister at that moment. The last thing they needed was Camilla doing something heroically stupid like running into a trap set up by Rufus.

"Well, what if it meant a real key all along?" Nina posed.

"So..." Amber spoke up confusion laced into her words, "you think there might be a spare key hidden somewhere in the library?"

"If there is we need to get it before anyone else does." Fabian quickly spoke up causing the Sibuna's to look to one another. They had a plan. It was about as thought out as any of their plans. Which meant they had the bare bones but with little time left to them they had to manage with what they had.

The Sibuna's were a bundle of nerves the next day, and the sudden arrival of Mick Campbell back in their ranks did nothing to lift Camilla's spirits as she watched her brother eat his toast with a look in her eye which simply told him to hurry the fuck up. Her knee bouncing under the table and the fact the girl refused to wear her uniform that day at all, was enough to inform all the Sibuna's Camilla wanted to save Jerome and save him now.

"Okay, other than Cam who is ready to go break out Jerome?" Alfie asked as he came through with a full plate, Nina going to take one of the muffins but Alfie avoided her hand. This was his nervous food. He needed it. For all, he knew his best friend was in danger. He deserved a little stress eating, especially seeing as Camilla hadn't eaten anything but had downed 3 huge mugs of tea instead for her breakfast.

"We need to go now." Camilla urged, looking to her brother, "it's already been far too long!"

"If Jerome is at the barn, he'll still be there," Fabian reassured his sister, before looking across the table to share a look with Amber. "Rufus kept Trudy alive, I promise he will have kept Jerome alive too."

His words did nothing to reassure Camilla at all.

Fabian let out a sigh knowing nothing he could say would cause Camilla to calm down until Jerome was safe. The boy turned to Nina, "I've been thinking, we have Cam with us so you two should take Joy with you," he told the girl looking between her and Amber.

"Good idea. There is safety in numbers." Camilla instantly agreed with her brother causing a 'hmph' noise as Amber crossed her arms. There was no real arguing if both the twins were in agreement but Nina probably would try.

"The twins are right." Amber turned to look at Nina in amazement hearing the words leaving the girls lips. "we could use the extra set of eyes, she's in." Nina told the pair seeing a smile flit onto Camilla's face for the first time in 24 hours.

Eddie's arrival was announced by the boys faltering attempt at whistling, giving them all a nod at the table as he wandered around the table to sit next to Patricia who beamed at him.

"So..." Amber spoke up, "how was your gran, Nina?" she asked trying to bring the conversation to something non Sibuna.

"The same..." Nina told her in a quiet tone, all of them knowing that the spirit targeting her gran was causing the girl a lot more pain than she was letting on. "but I am hoping for a full recovery very soon." She winked to the twins causing the pair to smile slightly, "if she gets what she needs."

"Which will happen," Fabian told her in such a tone Nina couldn't help but believe him, it also helped Camilla nodded her head along with Fabian's words.

"Those two are a little optimistic," Eddie mumbled to Patricia, "the woman's in a coma, right?"

"Eddie!" Patricia hissed at the boy.

"Sorry..." Eddie turned to look at the opposite end of the table seeing the unamused looks from his peers at his blunt words.

They all took that as their cue to go, Camilla jumping to her feet and rushing to the door ushering them out. The sooner they got Jerome the better in her mind.

"Alfie... we're going," Fabian mumbled to the boy pushing his hand down as the boy went to grab the uneaten muffin from Camilla's plate.

"What but –"

"Alfie we're going!" Fabian told the boy grabbing his arm and all but pulling him from the room.

Leaving Eddie alone at the table, watching them leave with a curious look in his eye.

Jerome had been working on the safe for most of the night and as he heard the last barrel drop he couldn't help but take a step back in awe. Had he just cracked open a safe? Well, there was one way to know for certain. He put his hand on the handle and lifted it up before pulling on the door, watching as the metal creaked open.

The boy couldn't help the triumphant cry that left his mouth as he watched the door open. "I've actually cracked a safe!" he couldn't help but whisper in glee, "I've been spending way to much time with my dad."

With that, he focused on the task at hand. Finding his gem.

The inside of the safe was littered with papers and odd trinkets he assumed were significant but he pushed past them until he saw the purple/pink small gem that had caused him far to much trouble that year. "Gotcha..." he whispered holding it to the light.

His head turning away from the beautiful stone as a car could be heard pulling up outside the barn. Rufus was back.

In a rush, Jerome quickly shut the safe and locked it again before rushing over to the seat Rufus had brought for him, the gem clutched in his hand. He was not letting it out of his sight until he knew he could hand it to someone he trusted. Someone Rufus would never suspect. That was the only way he could get the bloody thing off the man.

Rufus looked slightly amused as he entered the room to see the bored face of Jerome look his way. The small flash of fear that crossed the boy's face always brought him a little joy. "just checking you're not getting up to anything," he informed the boy looking around the room cautiously.

"in a barn, what could I do?"

"I'm sure you could think of something."

"Why are you keeping me anyway?" Jerome asked in confusion.

"You are marsat alhami," Rufus told the boy with a knowing smile, "The Anchor of The Protector." Jerome's eyes widened as he took in the man's words. "she will come for you and when she does, I'll be waiting."

Rufus held a hand up and silenced the boy with a two-finger swipe, literally, Jerome felt as if his lips had been sewn shut or something. The man's focus was on his phone as it started to ring, "Vera finally!" he answered, "what have you got to report?"

Outside the barn, The Protector was stood with her brother and friends trying to figure out how they were going to get Jerome from inside. Rufus's car was parked there so they knew their friend was going to be inside.

"That is Rufus's car," Patricia confirmed to them all as they crouched behind a wall.

"He's still inside then," Fabian sighed, glancing at his sister. They needed to be careful. If Rufus wanted Camilla then whatever they did now they had to do carefully. They couldn't lose their most powerful piece in this chess match.

"We outnumber Rufus, 4 to one," Alfie enthusiastically spoke up missing the hazardous looks the twins were sharing. "so when I give the signal we attack!"

"NO!" Camilla hissed grabbing the boy who looked like he was about to charge headfirst.

"No," Fabian repeated. "we need to stake the place out... the one thing he wants more than the mask is Cam, we need to be careful with how we approach this."

"we see if Rufus leaves. If he does, we break in and grab Jerome then," Camilla said simply causing nods from the others. it was a simple plan. Easy to follow.

"I guess for the sake of Cam's life we can do this the boring way," Alfie grumbled as they stealthy moved off into a side barn where there was more cover for them to stake out the place.

None of them seeing the figure who was racing up the road behind them.

"my cover's been blown," Jerome heard Vera say over the phone, "Victor choose that brat of a girls side!"

"no!" Rufus groaned loudly.

Jerome smiled at the mention of Camilla and suddenly he felt the spell Rufus put on him wash away. He glanced at the man and decided to do something reckless. He tackled the man, pushing him to one side before racing to the door and making an escape. He ran over to a pile of haybales and crouched behind them, turning just in time to see Camilla, Alfie, Patricia and Fabian all in the doorway to the barn Rufus had kept Trudy in.

Camilla had come for him. they had all come for him. the smallest of smiles crept onto his face but that vanished as Rufus came racing from the office and the Sibuna's and Jerome ducked into their respective hiding spots. It wasn't the time to be celebrating just yet, they still weren't clear of all the hurdles in front of them.
