Entry 48

Today is Snoggletog, and it's unlike any previous Snoggletog in my lifetime. Of course, I knew it would be different, since a), nobody is in a celebrating mood, and b), there's no usual festivities. The traditional town feast has been, obviously, cancelled, and with it, all the drinking and dancing that accompanies it. (Well, maybe not the drinking… there's been more of that than usual, just typically behind closed doors. Don't ask me how I know.)

With everyone being so down and reclusive, I'm taking this as the perfect opportunity to go for a walk. I don't usually enjoy walking around Berk, due to being the village outcast and all, but I think some fresh air will be nice (even if it's also frigid air). And when I get back, I'm going to give my father his gift. Hopefully, it'll do SOMETHING to change the depressed mood that's captured us all.

I'm… actually surprised. After dinner (just some watery stew…), my dad did his usual gift giving to me. Another carving, as is tradition, but I was grateful nonetheless. Then, I said I had something for him too, and had him follow me upstairs (no way I was dragging that hammer to the common room). When I pulled the weapon out of the chest, his eyes widened, and he took it when I held it out.

"Did you make this?"

I nodded.

"You're getting better. With some more practice, you could rival Gobber someday."

I said nothing, just in awe of the compliments.

"Of course, you won't be able to get to the big ones until you put some meat on your bones…"

...Aaaaand the feeling was short lived.

"But still, this is quite impressive. Thank you, Hiccup."

...But it can be brought back.

"Uh, you're welcome," I replied, watching as he made his way back downstairs, hammer in hand.

So… is he happy? I'm still not sure. My father's emotions are very cryptic, unless they're anger or disappointment. But happiness or pride? I have no idea how to read those… I'm sure whatever emotion I elicited wasn't quite to the level of pride (I don't even think that's achievable to be honest), but there was definitely something.

And for me, that's good enough.

Until next time…

I'll get to the other half of your suggestion in the next one ;)
