Battle For Mewni - It Has Only Just Begun

Rafael and Angie Diaz were both asleep when the couple was aroused by a sound coming from downstairs.

Angie sat up lifting raising her sleeping mask. "Did you hear that?"

Rafael sat up nervously. "Y-Yes. Maybe we should call the police."

Angie scoffed, "Psh! Police. Hand me my nine-iron. There's only one law in this jungle: Mom's law."

With her weapon in hand, and husband right behind her as if using her as a shield, the married couple crept downstairs. They spotted the kitchen light on and tiptoed their way over keeping silent as to get the drop on the intruder.

"Aha!" Angie shouted jumping into the kitchen her golf club raised over her head.

The couple paused when they saw not an intruder but Liger. The giant cat stared at the two, peanut butter smeared on his muzzle.

"What are you guys doing?"

"Ah!"

Angie and Rafael jumped startled, turning around. There stood a confused Marcia, donning a frilly red apron.

"We should be asking you that young lady," Angie gave her daughter a stern look. "It's 3 a.m."

"It is?" Marcia looked at the kitchen clock.

"Honey, what are you doing up?" Angie asked

A ding sounded and Marcia walked over to the oven pulling out a batch of freshly made cookies.

"I couldn't sleep so I came down with Liger to make cookies, but it turns out he just wanted the peanut butter."

Marcia sighed looking at Liger who had his head jammed into an almost empty peanut butter jar.

"Marcia...What kind of cookies are those?" Angie asked

"Peanut Butter snickerdoodle," Marcia said

Angie and Rafael gasped before turning away from Marcia.

"Peanut Butter Snickerdoodle," Rafael whispered

"Marcia only makes those cookies when she's at her saddest!" Angie whispered

"This is worse than we thought," Rafael whispered

"I can hear you guys," Marcia said

"Marcia," Angie walked over to her daughter. "I know you're sad about Star having to leave so abruptly but-"

Angie stopped talking when she heard the dialing of a phone. She and Marcia turned to see Rafael using the house phone.

"Rafael, what are you doing?" Angie questioned

Rafael pointed to a flyer hanging on the refrigerator. "I was just going to call the...the Teen Sadness hotline."

"I got this," Angie narrowed her eyes determined, "Mama's got this."

Marcia had taken a seat at the kitchen table and had already devoured two cookies. Angie joined her daughter, taking a seat next to the girl

"Well, how are the cookies?" Angie asked

"Delicious. The sweetness momentarily brings me joy and blocks all other emotions," Marcia said

"Aw honey," Angie patted her daughters back. "Mama likes to drown her sadness in Salted Caramel fudge." She whispered. "But sweetie, it's not like your never gonna ever see her again."

"Yeah but...Star hasn't messaged me once. No phone call, not even a text. I'm really sad that she's gone but I'm more worried than anything. She had to leave so fast, and she hasn't contacted me so I'm worried about what's happening," Marcia said

Star was feeling about as well as Marcia. She sat huddled in the back of a carriage wearing the hoodie she had once borrowed from Marcia had never returned. Star used her wand to check in on Marcia, and she felt terrible that she was unable to contact her friend. The Princess let out a groan throwing her head back.

"Star!" Moon called out.

The Queen was upfront driving the carriage.

"We need to be quiet! We don't know who might be listening."

Star opened the carriage door. "Sorry, Mom." She paused as the door fell off. "Sorry."

"It's okay. Can you check on the Commission?" Moon asked

Star peeked around the back of the carriage. "Yeah, they seem...okay."

Omnitraxus Prime, Rhombulus, and Hekapoo floated, their eyes black, empty, and soulless. A rope had been tied around each of their waists and their unmoving floating bodies were pulled by the carriage. Their bodies were so still a bird had taken to making a nest atop of Hekapoo's head.

"Still in their stasis," Star said

There was a loud cawing as a bird flew towards the nest on Hekapoo's head.

"Oh, looks like ol' Hekapoo is gonna be an auntie!" Star looked to the front towards her mother. "So, how exactly are we going to de-balloonify them?"

"Once we're at the Sanctuary, the Well of Magic should be able to rejuvenate them," Moon said

"And Lekmet's gonna meet us there?" Star asked

Moon pauses before answering. "Yes, he'll meet us there." She nervously spoke, pushing some ash into a ram's horn resting next to her.

"Okay, great. So, what's up with that warnicorn?" Star asked

"What?"

Moon looked at the warnicorn that was pulling the carriage. The poor thing was wheezing and panting heavily and it looked like it wasn't going to last much longer. The animal only got a few more feet before it vanished in a poof of smoke, only leaving behind its warnicorn shoes. Star and Moon stare at the empty spot for a moment or two before the carriage starts to veer out of control.

"Mom! Mom, what is going on?" Star cried out

"It's the fritz!" Moon said

There was another proof of smoke that engulfed the carriage turning it into a wooden wagon.

"It's causing all magic to-"

Another poof and the wooden wagon turns into a small red wagon meant for children, with Butter Flyer painted on the side.

"-to weaken and-"

One more proof and the wagon was gone leaving Star and Moon with no transportation. The two skid on the ground for a couple of feet before coming to a stop. Luckily Star still had the High Commission's ropes held in her hand.

"-fade. It's okay. We're all right as long as we have this magical path to guide us." Moon gestured to some floating crystals before them.

Unfortunately, those don't last much longer, flickering before disappearing.

"I guess we're setting up camp," Moon said

Marcia sighed as she pulled her knees in closer. The young girl was sitting on the couch, a blanket wrapped around her, as a movie played on the TV.

Marcia let out another sigh. "Monster Movie Marathon...Star and I had this night planned for weeks, and now she's not here to enjoy it."

Liger strolled over to Marcia hopping on the couch before laying his head in Marcia's lap.

"Hey, Liger. Popcorn?" Marcia asked, holding a bowl out.

Liger didn't have to be told twice as he stuck his head into the bowl of salty food.

"Liger is it just me? Am I just being an overly paranoid worrywart or is something wrong with Star? I mean...Not a single text. That is so not her. I mean this is the girl who used to text to check up on me when I was in the bathroom for too long. I...What do you think Liger?"

Liger lifted his head from the bowl, several pieces of buttery popcorn stuck to his face.

"Yeah, I thought you say that. Well..this marathon isn't going to watch itself," Marcia said

She snuggled deep into the couch looking at the TV. Liger, done with the popcorn glanced up at Marcia before he snuggled up closer to the girl acting as a blanket.

Marcia gave a soft smile gently stroking Liger's head as they both watched the movie playing.

Star dropped a bundle of gathered sticks on the ground. Moon raised her hand and tried her best to use magic to start a fire. She let out some grunts producing a small flame but nothing strong enough to ignite the sticks. After a few more tries the Queen gives up, sighing in defeat.

Star smiled. "I got this one Mom."

She held up her wand and the half star gem started to glow but with an ominous green light.

"Stop!" Moon grabbed Star. "It's corrupted!"

"What?" Star pulled away from her mother. "No, no, no, it's fine!" She pulled her wand back trying to keep it out of her mother's reach. "Don't worry about it. It does this all the time. Glossaryck never cared."

Moon tried to get the wand and Star kept her mother at bay, pressing a hand against her mother's cheek.

"Glossaryck isn't here, and, ugh, and he's probably not coming back." Moon stopped reaching for the wand and held onto Star's wrist.

"Wait. What do you mean?" Star asked brows furrowed in confusion.

"Toffee has Glossaryck, and your wand seems tainted by his magic as well. It's the same magic I saw when I fought Ludo. Now let's start a fire, and we'll head for the Sanctuary in the morning."

Moon walked over to their things opening a large suitcase.

"There must be some helpful in here." She pulled out a piece of corn with a note stuck on it. "I corn't wait to see you again.'" Moon tossed it aside. "Uh, did your father pack this with nothing but…"

She pulled out a fan with a picture of her husband on it, posing while blowing a kiss. Written on the fan was Miss you! Kisses OXOX River (your husband).

"Ugh, no." Moon closes the fan before throwing it. She searched through the suitcase some more before letting out a groan closing it. She glanced to her right to see Star kneeling on the ground before the sticks.

"What are you doing?"

Star vigorously rubbed two sticks together. She got a small spark and was able to ignite the stick getting the fire going.

"Starting a fire. Duh."

"Did your father teach you that?" Moon asked

"No, Marcia did. Marcia taught me a lot, like how to mope, self-pity...painting cool designs on my fingernails." Star showed her fingers which had an array of cute designs decorating them. "Ya know all the cool teen stuff. And now that's all I have."

She stared at the fire before Moon stomped it out with her foot.

Star looked at her mother aghast. "Wha-Mom!"

Moon put a finger over her lips. "Shh-shh-shh!" She silently pointed to her left towards the dark woods near them.

Moon and Star snuck into the woods hiding behind two bushes. They poked their heads out and spotted some mice sniffing about the area.

"It looks like they're just scouts. We'll let them-!"

Moon's eye widened when she saw Star no longer by her side, but rather trying to sneak up behind the mice.

Star held up her wand. "Mom, check it out!" She whispered yelled

Moon gasped covering her mouth as Star's wand started to glow with dark green corrupted magic.

"Star! No!" She exclaimed diving out of the bush.

The mice look at Moon then to Star before quickly running off.

"Ugh! Fine!" Star groans before she took off running after the mice. She grabs a stick leaping before the mice blocking their path. One of the mice leaped at Star, but she whacked it with her makeshift weapon.

"Stick blast!"

The mice flew a few feet before landing in Moon's arms.

"Yah!" Star shouted, whacking another mouse.

"Star!" Moon shouted

Star spun her stick around about to face the last mouse. Seeing no other option the rodent picks up one of its fellow mice by the tail spinning it like a weapon. Star blinks confused before the mouse launches its pal at her. She blocked the attack hitting the mouse right back causing it to collide with the first one. The two mice tumble away landing in a heap next to the Butterfly women's things.

"Aah! I did it! I did it! Yeah! I did it!" Star cheered, raising her stick high above her head.

"Star, we need to get out of here immediately. I can't believe you would be so foolish as to-"

Loud mice chattering cut off Moon. She and Star turned to see the High Commission being untethered by the mice and floating away into the sky.

Moon gasped. "The High Commission!"

The two take off running after them, but not without Star making a face at the mice sticking her tongue out at them. The wind carried the High Commission further and further away, with Moon and Star running as fast as they can to catch up. When she's within range, Moon jumps trying to grab onto the ropes, but they just grace her fingers going out of her reach. They float off and out of her sight.

"W-Where, where did they go?" Moon panted looking around.

"Th-They're right there," Star spoke pointing to a tree.

The tree was large and spelled danger. It was littered with thorns and jagged branches and to top it off, the tree also had skulls of various people and animals hanging from it.

"Guess we're goin' up," Star said

"Ugh, fine," Moon said

Moon grumbled as she pushed aside some throwing bushes. "Ugh, never listens to her mother."

Star groaned. "C'mon, Mom! What's the big deal?"

Moon let out a grunt pulling herself up the tree. "The big deal is your recklessness has put us in harm's way."

"It's just a little danger," Star said

She passed by a skeleton wearing a purple hat. She took the hat off, placing it on her own head.

"I've been in way worse than this," Star mumbled before elbowing the skeleton like an old friend. "You know what I'm talkin' about."

The skeleton's jaw drops off its face, Star just staring at it. Muffled cries sounded behind her and Star turned around gasping as she saw her mother bound, head to toe, in thorny vines.

"Mom!" Star ran over pulling her mother free. "Are you okay?"

Moon stood up. "Let's just get the Magical High Commission and get out of here."

"Okay." Star put the hat back on the skeleton before following her mother.

The two reached the top of the tree finally retrieving the balloon-like High Commission. From their new vantage point, the mother and daughter could see all across the woods.

Moon looked out across the way and gasped. "The Sanctuary!"

Back on Earth, it was early morning. Rafael was making his way downstairs but paused when he saw Marcia. She was sitting at the kitchen table with an open book along with dozens of photos and other scraps of papers.

"Marcia, morning...Uhm what are you doing?" Rafael asked

"Scrapbooking," Marcia answered

"Oh, that's nice," Rafael said

"I'm trying to keep my mind busy," Marcia said

"That's good," Rafael said

"A lot of my summer plans involved hanging out with Star and now that she's gone...I need to fill up my time," Marcia said

"That's uh…" Rafael glanced around not sure what to say lest he upset his daughter.

He walked up behind Marcia observing her work. He smiled impressed by his daughter's creativity. He looked over some of the finished pages Marcia had laying about the kitchen table but paused noticing a particular photo.

"Marcia…" Rafael held up a photo. "Who is this boy?"

Marcia froze mid gluing of a picture. She slowly turned around to see her father holding up a picture of her and Tom.

"Uhhhhh…...What's that Mom!" Marcia suddenly exclaimed standing up. "You need me to walk the laser puppies, I'm coming!" She shouted before running away.

"Marcia Diaz you get back here young lady, and tell your papa about this boy who is too close to you in this photo!" Rafael said

Star and Moon with the High Commission in tow, made their way to The Sanctuary, which was a beautiful vast lake. As they arrived Star let out a snort and chuckled seeing a blue caiman sitting on the edge of the lake.

"Is it, like, a little Sanctuary guardian?" Star chuckled

"No, he's the gatekeeper," Moon said, kneeling next to the animal.

"Wait, wha?" Star said

"Bwah!" Moon shouted at the creature

"Bwaaah!"

And the creature repeated it back at the Queen.

"Rahh!"

"Wahh!"

Star watched confused and a bit concerned as her mother went back and forth making strange noises with the caiman.

"She's lost her marbles," Star mumbled

"Wah!"

The gatekeeper lets out one more cry before crawling into the lake. It swam a good distance away before popping back out. Its body shakes for a second before numerous caimans burst froth from the water piled atop one another. As the pile got higher it's revealed the animals were on a large building, which was the real Sanctuary.

"Whoa," Star gasped

Moon and Star cross the water via a stepping stone path entering the Sanctuary.

As they entered Star gasped amazed as she stared up at the depictions on the ceiling.

"Whoa! Look at all the Glossarycks."

"Yes, Star. The queens of Mewni have been coming here for generations," Moon said

They entered a large chamber with two fountains, shaped like Glossaryck, that flowed water into a large pool of water.

"What now?" Star asked

Moon approached a valve before turning it. In the pool of water three flower buds arise blooming open as they settle atop the water.

"All right. Let's get the Commission into their pods, so we can revive them," Moon said

"Let's go, guys!"

Star pulled each member of the High Commission to a flower pod, tiring them down. When they were settled in, the center of the flower glowed with a soft pink light before the pods closed up, enclosing them.

"All right, I'm going to open the Wellspring. Stand clear," Moon said

Moon rotates another valve, and three troughs unfold from the center well. It took a moment before a strange liquid started to flow down the toughs. It was black and thick, akin to sludge.

"Is that stuff supposed to be all black and goopy like that?" Star questioned

Moon gasped her eyes wide. "No, it's not!"

She quickly turned the valve stopping the liquid. Star and Moon climb to the top of the Wellspring peering down inside. Inside was more of the gunk, black and bubbling.

"Oh, I feel like that's not how it's supposed to look," Star said

"It's worse than I'd feared," Moon said

"Mom?" Star questioned

"We'll have to go with plan B," Moon said

"All right, Plan B. What's plan B?" Star asked

"We'll talk about that after we get settled in. Look at you, you're covered in scratches. Let's fix you up," Moon said

She sat Star down before removing Marcia's hoodie. She grabbed the sleeve of the hoodie tearing it off.

"What are you doing?!" Star gasped

"Star, what do you want me to do? It's in tatters already," Moon said

She used the scarp of the hoodie to make it into a bandage for Star's arm. When it was securely tied Moon walked over to a curtain of leaves.

"Uh, Mom? If the well is messed up, how are we going to revive the Magic High Commission?" Star asked

"We don't need to worry about that right now, Star. This sanctuary is very well hidden." Moon pushed away the curtain of foliage revealing a vending machine. "Now, do you want creamed corn or corned cream?"

"What?" Star said

"To eat, Star. Generations of Butterflys have come here in times of danger. We'll be safe for as long as it takes. Now, do you have any change?" Moon asked

"Wait, so we're just going to hide? That's your plan B? That's a terrible plan B!" Star said

"Your safety is my priority right now," Moon said

"Uh, I didn't blow up my whole life just so you could give up! Come on, we could track those rats back to Toffee and end this whole thing!" Star said

"Even if the Magical High Commission was okay, we still wouldn't be strong enough to defeat Toffee. Our best bet is to lay low until the situation changes," Moon said

"You lied to me," Star stated before she started walking away.

"Star, what are you doing?" Moon said

"What else have you lied about, Mom? I bet Lekmet isn't even meeting us here!" Star said

"Lekmet is dead, Star. And it could happen to us too. Toffee won't stop until he finds this!" Moon pulled out a vial which contained Toffee's severed finger.

Star frowned, "Did you take that from my closet? And you're just carrying it around?"

"It's too dangerous to do anything but stay," Moon said

"No! I am not hiding here until I am old and gray like you! This has to mean something!" Star held up her wand.

"No, Star! The wands are linked! He'll find us!" Moon said

"Oh, like he won't find us with you carrying his finger around! I defeated him once! I can do it again!" Star turned to a wall. "Fantastic Exit Beam!"

"Star, stop!" Moon shouted

Star turned to her mother raising her wand high above her head. "Why?! What happened to cool warrior queen Mom?!"

"I was never a cool warrior queen, Star." Moon started tearing up. "I was a happy-go-lucky girl like you. And then Toffee and his monsters killed my mother."

Star goes still her mouth agape before she lowers her wand. Moon takes a seat covering her face.

"I thought you sent Grandma to a grandma farm to hang out with other grandmas," Star said

Moon let out a sad sigh. "Oh, Star."

Star sat down next to her mother. "Tell me."

"I was about your age when it happened. I didn't know what to do, so I spoke to Eclipsa," Moon said

"Eclipsa Eclipsa? But she's been dead for hundreds of years!" Star said

Moon looked at her daughter, her face set in a grim serious expression. "No. Eclipsa's alive. And I made a deal with her."
