Chapter 91

.

Note: Katniss is from the "Hunger Games" book series, Tris is from the "Divergent" series. Both from the books, not the movies.

.

During the planning session Katniss brought her new friend, Beatrice Prior, to help.

.

Tris: Nice to meet you all.

Buffy: Same here. Katniss says you're also concerned about your sibling?

Tris: Yeah, my brother. In our world, the ruins of Chicago, we were in seperate factions, we both made our share of mistakes. In the end I sacrificed my life to save his, even that wasn't enough to earn Heaven, frankly it seems unlikely he made it up there either. Haven't seen him yet but, figure it doesn't hurt to have allies.

Buffy: Makes sense. Can you ahndle yourself in a fight?

Tris: I was born in Abnegation, but defected over to Dauntless.

Anakin: Explain what that means.

Tris: The Abnegaion faction were the selfless, we didn't eat more than we needed to survive. Dauntless, the fearless, were the protectors, the cops and soldiers. Had to gain muscle strength, learn how to use guns and other weapons. To answer your question, I can handle myself in a fight.

Anakin: When this is over, I'd like to discuss this faction system with you.

.

The planing session went on for over two hours, they came up with the best plan they could, given the intel they had on the complex. The plan put Katniss in more danger than her teammates liked, but it was the best they could do. After this, Anakin was interested in the faction system of Tris' world and wanted to discuss it with her.

.

Tris: Our faction system developed after our world was ravaged by a long and horrible war. Everyone was expected to fit in with one of five factions. Abnegation were the selfless, Duantless the fearless. Erudite were the intelligent, they were the doctors and scientists. Candor were the honest, they ran the courts.

Anakin: Honest lawyers, that's alien to some worlds.

Tris: Amity were the kind, the peaceful. They were mainly farmers, they figured that if everyone had enough food they wouldn't feel the need to fight. Then there were the factionless, those who didn't fit in with any particular faction. They mainly did the jobs others didnt want, waste disposal, bus drivers, and so forth. Abnegation were the only faction everyone else trusted to run the government, at least at first. Over time, we became somewhat corrupt. Our leaders tried to set a good example, being noticeably thin, not even allowing their childen toys. But they were as power hungry as any dictators, a revolt was inevitable.

Anakin: When this system was in place, could anyone switch factions?

Tris: Once, when we came of age, we got to choose our own factions. 90% chose the faction they were born into. Either way you then had to pass an initiation. If you failed, you became factionless.

Anakin: You said the faction you were born into, what if the parents belonged to two different factions?

Tris: Chances are both parents would become factionless before the child was born, inter-marriage was almost unheard of. If the pregnant woman refused to identify the father, the child would just belong to the mother's faction. Factionless children were given the same choice upon coming of age.

Anakin: This system, could it have lasted longer? Could mistakes have been avoided in hindsight?

Tris: I don't know. I didn't find out until later, we were being monitored, the whole thing was an experiment. They also tried to avoid the mistakes that led to the ruin of our world. By the time I died it became obvious that this system couldn't be sustained forever. Why are you so interested in my world?

Anakin: The jedi tried something similar once. We took children who were force sensitive, when they were infants. Figured we could train them from an early age to make better choices. This just made the galaxy hate us, they thought we were nothing more than baby snatchers. We reached a compromise, came under the control of the Galactic Senate, took only those children whose parents were willing to part with them. But even this system couldn't weed out corruption, some still went to the darkside. I ask about your world because, when this is over, assuming we win, we'll need a new system in place. Some system that can help more people make better choices. I guess I'm just trying to figure out what system we should use.
