Chapter 49
"You Draco will kill Albus Dumbledore!"
"B-But"
"Is there a problem?" the Dark Lord demanded, flicking Narcissa to the ground as she protested silently. Calypso glanced around at her mum who was standing silently in the doorway, her lips pressed together in a grim line.
"N-n-no. But how?", Draco asked.
The Dark Lord laughed coldly, so loud it woke Calypso up.
She quickly looked around, she was still in bed and judging by the sun's positions, it was just past dawn.
Calypso sat up, rubbed her eyes, and called "Willy!"
With a crack, the house-elf appeared at her doorway. "What can Willy do for you miss?"
"Is my mum home?"
Calypso needed to know if her dream was true. If Draco really was going to be tasked with killing Dumbledore.
"Yes miss," the house-elf said earnestly. "I've just been to bring her breakfast"
"Oh! Well that's great I guess"
Calypso should have waited a bit later to say that. Because as soon as she got dressed and went downstairs, her mum grabbed her hand.
"There you are- we have got to go already! I told you yesterday to expect it!"
"W-wait what?"
Her mum frowned. "Oops!- Oh hurry up!" she said impatiently as Calypso braided the side of her hair in a long french braid. "We're due in 5 minutes!"
"Okay, okay…." Calypso finished tying the braid off in the back. "Okay done!" She took her mum's hand and they both ran outside to apparate away to Malfoy Manor.
Once outside the gates, her mum threw the little golden peacock over, gaining them entrance in.
When they entered, a house-elf was waiting outside to collect their coats...but it was summer so?
"Hello, Calypso!"
Narcissa rushed forward to hug her and she smiled slightly, her dream still fresh in her mind. It didn't help matters that the Manor was decorated exactly how it was like in the dream.
"Is the Lord here yet?" her mum asked urgently.
"No, but you two are the last to arrive. He should be due any moment now so I should lower the gates." Narcissa whispered, then turned to Calypso. "It'll be quite a small gathering through and he's not in the best mood. Try to keep low alright?"
Calypso nodded.
"Good, Draco's just in here now, you can sit next to him…"
Surprisingly, quite a few of her classmates were in the dining room as well. Altaira was sitting just opposite of them with her parents, both with tight expressions, Theo was talking with Justin, and Crabbe and Goyle were sitting on the left of Draco with equally grumpy expressions.
They mostly sat in silence until the Dark Lord flew in.
"Ahh yes. Welcome everyone to our new headquarters, kindly offered to us by the Malfoys"
Calypso glanced at Narcissa who looked rather unkind at the moment.
"So kind of everyone to join us" the Dark Lord continued. "Now let me see. Severus?"
It surprised Calypso more than anything to see her Potions professor walk into the Manor. As surprised as one might be to see their teacher in a bar.
"My lord, Albus Dumbledore and the new Minister are at once in disagreements. I suspect that it will not be long before they split off to work alone. Additionally, he has just successfully recruited your old Potions professor, Horace Slughorn."
If the Dark Lord was troubled, he didn't show it.
"And this information comes-"
"From the source we discussed" confirmed Snape.
"Good, good. And another matter now. Bella, Sirius Black is dead isn't he?"
Her mum nodded from the Dark Lord's right-hand side.
"And have you tried entering his house yet?"
"Yes. But my lord, I was not able to locate it-"
"That's unfortunate-"
"Yes my lord, but I have, with great difficulty, acquired his will"
The Dark Lord looked mildly surprised. "Who has given it to you?"
"The house-elf my lord."
"Very well then, and do you have it now?"
"No, but I have it memorized"
"Go on then. Who has possession of the house?"
"Harry Potter my lord"
"We shall make plans then"
Calypso intently listened to the way the Dark Lord spoke. He made it sound as if they were all apart of the plans like each one of them was important and valuable to him. She could see why so many would follow him. Calypso, not so much. Sure, she respected him, he was a great wizard, but he was still a power-hungry liar.
He wasn't even pureblood for Salazar's sake.
Calypso vaguely wondered if the whole 'pureblood supremacy' act was just a hoax for power, and if it was, he certainly couldn't have chosen a better rallying point. At least Grindelwald was pureblood, right?
"Everyone's dismissed. Except for Nott and Malfoy, you two, stay."
"My lord-" her mum interrupted.
The Dark Lord sighed, "Very well Bella, you may listen in as well. Everyone else, out!"
Her mum grabbed her arm, "You're not leaving my sight. Sit right there with Cissy, got it?"
Calypso nodded and plopped herself down on the couch next to Narcissa.
She watched Theo and Draco with a gloomy expression as they shut the door behind them into the drawing-room of her dream.
"Is everything alright?" Calypso asked Narcissa with a worried expression while she twisted open the cookie jar on the top of the coffee table.
"Yes, yes. Fine, don't worry" Narcissa said frantically, getting up to pace the length of the room.
"Er…" Calypso finally opened the glass lid for the biscuits. "Would you like one?"
"Oh- no thank you."
Calypso studied Narcissa's pale face. "You look terrible, have a biscuit", she carefully dumped out a vanilla biscuit in the shape of a multi-petaled flower with a red jam heart in the middle onto a napkin.
"I rather not"
"I insist" Calypso persisted, gently shaking the cookie and napkin in Narcissa's face. "Here"
"Very well then" Narcissa carefully took the lace napkin with the pastry on it and chewed a small bite thoughtfully.
At that moment, she just happened to glance out the window to spot a few rather odd-looking wizards.
They had their wands out and seemed to be attempting to break into the Manor.
"Aunt Cissy?"
"Yes?"
"What are they doing here?"
"Oh, they've been arriving every day after 10. Trying to break in or watch us. Which is totally uncivilized, seeing as they've already searched our whole manor and confiscated half of our money! Just ignore them" she said with a tone of finality.
"What if they get in though?"
"They won't. He made sure of that", Narcissa snarled, wringing her hands together and looking at the door to the drawing-room every so often.
Just slightly, gasps, then a whooshing sound could be heard from said room.
Calypso ignored the sounds and continued, "So the Aurors won't get in no matter what?"
"Absolutely not, they won't. And even if they do- never you mind dear. They aren't even proper Aurors, just messengers."
"So they're harmless?"
"Yes," Narcissa sniffed.
Calypso shrugged, "If your sure" she muttered, and doled out a nice chocolate wafer for herself.
Strangely, she just noticed that the drawing-room door had a window where they could see everything that was going on inside.
Calypso hadn't noticed it earlier, for the curtains were drawn, but now…
But when she peered inside, she could only make out the strange silhouettes of what was happening.
"YOU'RE BEING A COWARD DRACO!", someone screamed, most likely her mum.
Narcissa jumped up. "Oh dear" she strode to the drawing-room door and slowly peaked in.
Calypso jumped back from the window. "What happened?"
"The Dark Lord just left," her mum said, walking out rather angrily and heading to the kitchen.
A second later, Theo stormed out.
"What happened?" Calypso repeated, determined for a better answer.
"He fucking wants me to become best friends with Potter", he spat.
"THEO!"
"What?"
"Look at me. Where do you think you're going?"
He froze his hands two inches from the doorknob. "Where else would I be going? I have to sleep somewhere tonight" With that, he turned to the handle.
Calypso ran forward. "There are Aurors out there Theo! How do you think it would look if you just waltzed right out."
"Oh fine" he muttered leaning against a wooden peacock that had been placed at the door for decor. "Where do you suggest I go then?"
"Guest room" Calypso answered promptly. "It's always empty"
"Actually, you can take Draco's room" interrupted Narcissa, who had just finished interrogating Draco. "He is going to Borgin and Burkes with me"
Calypso frowned, "Oh alright, Theo, come on"
She pulled him up the stairs, ignoring a house-elf in the process, (Would you like anything to drink?), and slammed the door to Draco's room shut, closing them inside. "Now what happened?"
He rolled his eyes. "I told you, I have to fucking make Potter trust me or some shit then figure out the old man's plans, etcetera, etcetera."
Calypso resisted the urge to throw a book at him. "I know that already! What about Draco?"
"He has to kill Dumbledore"
"WHAT?!" Calypso stared at him for any sign that he was joking. "You're kidding"
"Nope"
"HOW IS HE SUPPOSED TO DO THAT?" Calypso shrieked.
Theo glared at her, "Calm down. He's got the whole year. If anything, you should be worried about me! I have to report back every week!"
"Yeah, I'll be worried about you in September" Calypso muttered offhandedly. "Draco's doomed!"
"He'll be glad to see all the faith you have in him"
"No, no, no. Don't tell him that please" Calypso begged. "He's already upset at me-"
"Why's he upset with you?"
"That's none of your business...and don't read my mind!" she snapped.
"Mhm"
"I SAID NOT TO READ MY MIND!"
"Yeah, so he's mad at you-"
"I SAID NOT TO!"
Theo raised an eyebrow, "Fine. How's your animagus process coming along?"
"Well, do you know any way to speed up the process for a thunderstorm?" Calypso asked, thankful for the change in topics.
"It's got to be a natural storm" he deadpanned.
"Ahhh. Wait, what's that?" she demanded, noticing an edge of black on Theo's forearm as he reached out for a book.
He turned away from her. "How much did you hear at the meeting?"
"I-Okay fine, only the bit when my mum yelled at Draco for being a coward"
"He was a coward" he muttered rolling up his sleeve and brandishing the dark mark.
"Theo!" Calypso shrieked, grabbing his arm. "Why didn't you refuse?"
"I didn't get the choice to" he snarled.
"Well this is fucking ridiculous then- he wants you to befriend Potter, but also gives you EXACTLY what would give you away?"
"He has his reasons."
"Fine, fine! Communication, blah blah blah, why can't you just murder Potter while you're at it anyway?"
"I'm sure you're well aware that he wants to be the one to kill him"
"HE'S RUINING HIMSELF!" Calypso shrieked. "At this point, Potter might not kill him but his pride will!"
"Yeah well, don't tell anyone that obviously"
"I know", Calypso heavily sat down on the corner of Draco's bed. "What IF he loses though? We'll all be thrown into Azkaban! FOR WANTING WHAT'S BEST FOR THE WIZARDING WORLD!"
Theo turned his wand in the sunlight, "Then we fight on, don't we? Not for him but for everyone."
"And the first step of that-"
"Is to get rid of Potter and Dumbledore" he finished.
Calypso pushed herself up. "Right, now...where did Narcissa say they were going?"
"Borgin and Burkes- WAIT!"
"What?"
"What the fuck are you doing?"
"Going to Diagon Alley" Calypso hissed, transfiguring one of Draco's old homework assignments into a train ticket. "We can't apparate obviously"
"WE?"
Calypso narrowed her eyes, "You're not coming?"
Theo took a deep breath, "I'll come. Let me get my bag"
Five minutes later, he returned with a glowing blue object hovering in front of him.
"And what is that?" Calypso demanded.
"A portkey"
"WHAT? Do you not understand that those are MINISTRY-TRACKED-"
"Calm down. Father, always had a stash for emergencies. We just need to touch it to activate it"
Calypso eyed the glowing blue jewel hesitantly before putting one finger on it.
"WHOOSH!"
When Diagon Alley swirled into existence beneath them, Calypso let go of the portkey and dropped down a few feet away from the Leaky Cauldron.
"I hate portkeys" Calypso grumbled, brushing the dust off her WHITE dress.
"Would you have rather ridden a muggle train?"
"Point taken"
Calypso peered down the street where everything was mostly abandoned beside a rather bright one, "Weasley's Wizard Wheezes"
"Really?" Calypso asked disapprovingly. "Do they think this is a laughing matter- 'You-No-Poo'?!"
"Anything to attract customers I suppose. Have you noticed the Leaky Cauldron is empty?"
Calypso glanced at the pub dismissively. "Oh right-"
"FILTH!"
Calypso whipped around to see two random strangers spit at them.
"Leave it" Theo hissed. "We should find the Malfoys"
Calypso nodded and glared at the two wizards' retreating backs. "Please? Just let me stun them at least?"
"Make it quick"
"Stupefy!"
"Come on now!" Theo dragged her into the looming archway that stood as the entrance to Knockturn Alley. "Borgin and Burkes right?"
Calypso nodded with a hurried glance back to where ministry officials were swarming the scene of the stupefied man. Dramatic much?
"They're right in here," Theo said, interrupting her thought process and leading her into the rickety old shop.
When they entered through the dark door which gave a ring, Draco and Narcissa came into view. Narcissa was arguing in hushed whispers with Draco while he talked to Burkes, (That's got to be annoying).
"Draco- no!"
"Fuck off mother!" he snarled angrily.
Narcissa glared at him and he seemed to shrink. "Sorry?"
"No Draco! I'm tired of you snapping at me, it's not my fault Lucius is in Azkaban alright? I'm trying to help you right now!"
"I don't need your help!", he sneered.
Narcissa looked at him, clearly offended, "Very well then, I'll be outside" she brushed past them angrily and vanished the second she stepped out of the door.
Draco looked around, spotted them, and strode over. "I didn't even do anything!"
"Really Draco?" Calypso shrieked. "You're being ungrateful-"
"Where's she gone?" Theo asked, with a hint of nervousness in his voice.
Calypso followed his gaze through the musty window. "Didn't she say-"
"She would be waiting outside? I know" Draco hummed nervously, striding outside as well. "MU-"
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" Theo asked angrily.
"Snap!"
Calypso slowly backs away from where a twig just snapped in midair. "What was that?"
Draco looked around nervously, "I'm sorry alright?" he yelled into the distance.
"I told you to be quiet!" Theo hissed.
"I-"
Narcissa suddenly appeared from beside them. "That's alright."
"MUM!"
"You care about poor mummy now?"
"I apologized already!"
"Yes, now I don't want any more of that attitude"
Draco crossed his arms, obviously very upset at being addressed like a three-year-old. "Fine"
"Good- oh hello Calypso. And Theo too. Did you need anything?"
"Er no." Calypso shook her head.
"I'll take you all home then" Narcissa took their hands and with a crack, they apparated to the backyard of Malfoy Manor. "Nobody else tries that though" she added. "You'll be blasted right out."
"Right", Calypso said, making a mental note to keep that in mind.
"Wonderful, the house-elves should have lunch prepared by now. I hope you don't mind bubble and squeak cakes. I haven't had the time to go out shopping yet"
Calypso shrugged hesitantly. Whatever bubble and squeak cakes were, they ought to not be that bad.
But they kind of were. For everyone wondering, a 'bubble and squeak cake' is a fried patty with mushed up leftover vegetables and cellophane noodles, topped with an egg, sunny-side up.
A few days later while she was sitting in her bedroom at the Lestrange Manor, she noticed an owl gawking rather angrily at the edge of the protective charms.
"Go get the letter it has please" she directed to one of the house-elves, careful not to leave the Manor as the last time she did, her mum had completely lost it.
Calypso watched as the house-elf approached the owl who tried to hop away which led to quite the game of tag.
Eventually, her house-elf remembered that he could use magic and accio'd the letter from the owl.
Soon, with a crack, it apparated back to deliver the letter.
It had the Hogwarts emblem on it, which gave Calypso quite the hunch about what was inside. Her OWLs.
"MUM!"
Today was one of the few rare occasions that her mum was home.
"WHAT'S WRONG?"
"My OWL results came!"
"That's wonderful honey!" her mum screamed back and in the distance, Calypso could hear her climbing the stairs.
Calypso waited for her mum to arrive, (Because she was so nice), to open the letter.
"Well, what did you get?"
Calypso's eyes scanned over the letter. "Not bad I suppose. I only failed Care of Magical Creatures"
"Bah! I don't care about that! How about everything else"
"Well for Ancient Runes-"
"Just show me the letter" her mum snapped impatiently.
"Here"

"See? Not that bad" Calypso said after her mum finished reading.
"Yes, what happened in Defense?"
"I almost murdered an examiner"
Her mum patted her back sympathetically like that was a totally normal occurrence, "That happens"
