Battle for Mewni - The Takeover

In Butterfly Castle only one member of the royal family still slept. River, also known as King Butterfly.

He slept in a large messily made bed, tossing and turning as he snored. River grumbled turning in his bed as he awoke from his slumber.

"Mmm. Good morning, Moon Pie."

He opened his eyes to find the other side of his bed empty, and quickly remembered that his wife, Moon, was still absent. River sighed sadly with a whimper as he sat up staring at Moon's pillow that had an impression of her face due to her makeup. With a gloomy frown, River scoots back over to his side of the bed turning on a gramophone.

The outdated music player starts playing dance techno music featuring a harpsichord.

"Let...us...revel!" River shouted throwing up his arms.

River was taking the lack of his wife's absence to party in the castle, inviting many other Mewmans to join in on the fun. The castle was, for a lack of better words, a mess. Party lights were strewn up everywhere, various puddles and stains of soda and food littered the floors. Disco lights had been set up. All in all the castle was in a state that the current Queen would not approve of.

Several people stood around a large bucket chanting. "Jump! Jump! Jump!"

"Look out below!" River jumped wearing only his underwear and some party glasses, splashing into the bucket.

The crowd cheered as River popped back out of the bucket.

The partying continued on as River donned a cape and some glow sticks, dancing. He also had his beard dyed in a tie-dye fashion.

After the dancing River took up a spot on a throne, but he wasn't taking a break. His seat was lifted up by two people and a few feet across from him another chair was lifted, but sitting in this chair was a monkey dressed as a jester.

"Ha-ha! Forward!" River said

The monkey screeched as he and River's chairs rushed at one another like a jousting event. The two crashed into one another and the castle was filled with the sounds of loud music, monkey screeches, and River shouting.

The partying had continued late into the night but finally came to an end. The next morning River was once again snoring in his bed, but this time with the jester monkey plastered to his face. He woke with a snort and grabbed the monkey, ripping it from his face before tossing it away.

"Get away."

River slid across his bed once again turning on the gramophone.

"Keep...it...going!" River cheered but with a hint of strain in his voice.

The events of yesterday seemed to repeat themselves, River taking a cannonball dive into a bucket of water, but this time there was no water in the bucket. River landed with a heavy crash in the empty bucket but didn't seem all that phased as he stood up. However, the Mewmans around him were looking a bit more worn out, their cheering at a minimum.

"Hot tub's out of water!"

On the dance floor, one of the Mewman's was actually sprawled out on the floor looking utterly exhausted. River danced with the same enthusiasm as the other night, while those around him barely moved. There was someone dressed in a catlike mascot costume and River ran to him snatching off his costume head.

"I need this!" River exclaimed

The party continued on and the only one actually parting was River. Once again he was in his throne being lifted into the air, now donning the costume cat head.

"Ha-ha! Hyah!"

Across from him his opponent once again was the angry jester monkey, who let out a series of screeches. The two collided and the screeches of a monkey mixed with River's shouting sounded through the castle.

The next morning, like a loop, River was snoring in his messy bed. This time wearing the mascot head, with the monkey attached to that. River snorted awake and grabbed the mascot head.

"Ha-ha!"

He yanked the head off and tossed it, along with the monkey out the window.

"Oh, no. Well, you're free now, little monkey." River crawled over to his gramophone but paused seeing it covered in mashed corn. "Huh?"

He tries to turn it on but thanks to the food he's unable.

"Hey! Can someone come and fix my thing?" River said

No one is able to help the King, seeing as they were all incapacitated. Castle guards laid strewn about and the court jester was hanging limply from a chandelier. She swings from the chandler before falling off landing flat on her face, still asleep.

River frowns grumbling. "Looks like I've got to go wake somebody up." He walked over to the jester who had just hit the floor. "Foolduke! Wake up!"

Foolduke gasps waking up, a pool of drool having collected under her.

River approached the woman, finally putting clothes on. "Ah, Foolduke. Ha! My music thing isn't working. I need you to take a look at it."

"Where's my monkey?" Foolduke asked

"Oh. Oh. That was your monkey? Can't say that I've seen him. Not to be rude, but there are more pressing matters, you see," River said

A dimensional portal opens, and Marcia steps out holding a box.

"Uh, Star? Wow, this place is a mess." Marcia commented as she looked around.

"Marcia!" River cheered running over to the girl.

"Oh, hey, River," Marcia greeted

The King threw his arms around Marcia, wrapping her in a tight hug.

"Marcia, my girl! I can't believe you're here! Have you seen Foolduke's monkey?" River whispered

"Uh...no," Marcia said

River whispers, "Well, we better keep an eye out. I threw him-Uh?"

River pulls away from Marcia looking at the box she had been holding, now smashed.

"Well, what's this?"

"Oh, well, it was a care package. Some of Star's favorite things from earth, like Captain Blanche's Sugar Seeds. Extra sparkly nail polish. Stuff you can't get in Mewni, I thought I bring her some things," Marcia said

"Marcia, you're not giving that to my daughter. It's all smashed. Probably a good thing she's not here," River said

Marcia frowns and her brows furrow with worry. "She's...not here?"

River not noticing Marcia's worry walks over to a large speaker. "Now there must be some other way to summon forth the music." He wiggled his fingers as if to use some sort of magic to make the music start. "We will rock at you!"

"Look, River, I gotta say I'm pretty worried about Star. She left Earth in kind of a hurry. She's not texting me, and her social media has gone dark. That's like a big red flag for teens. She's not in trouble or anything, right?" Marcia questioned

River is silent wearing a stunned expression akin to a dead fish before he waves everything off with a loud forced chuckle.

"No, not at all! She and her mother just took a little trip, and Moon Pie asked me to keep up morale in the kingdom until they get back. So we've been rippin' it nonstop for days!"

"I-I don't know, man. Have you looked outside?" Marcia pointed out before walking over to a balcony.

"What do you mean, 'Have I looked outside?'" River questioned walking over to the balcony with Marcia.

"What I mean is morale doesn't look so high to me," Marcia said

Out in the village, Mewman's were in a panic. Cottages were on fire and the whole place just looked like a mess.

"What are you talking about, Marcia? The people are happy if their king is happy. Let me show you." River hopped onto the railing of the balcony. "Greetings, my gleeful subjects!"

All of the panicking stops as the Mewman people look up at River.

"Ah! Funny story! My know-it-all friend Marcia Diaz here-"

Marcia gives the man a frown crossing her arms.

"-seems to think you're not having a good time. And I said, "That's impossible!" Of course, you're having a good time with all these good times I'm having. So tell me, are you not lifted?!"

The crowd of people is silent except for one man in the back who cheers.

"How's about you lift some of this garbage out of the streets?!"

"Huh? Is that what that stuff is? I thought you were all having a garage sale," River said

"What are you gonna do about the burning building?!"

"Ah, you have to let one burn every once in a while. How else will you have room for a new one?" River said

From behind River Marcia's jaw drops.

"Well, what about the monster in the cornfield?"

"There's no monster in the corn-!"

Both River and Marcia gape seeing a large mountain-sized monster hunched over in the cornfield. A force field of magic is supposed to protect the village and castle from such things but with the magic on the fritz, the force field was almost completely gone, making things like a monster in the cornfield a possibility.

"Huh. Well, I'll be dipped. Well, I should be able to take care of that." River cracked his knuckles. "Hey, you there! Move along! Scram! Get out!" He shouted at the monster.

The Monster about to eat some corn stops and turns. It can't hear what River is shouting but it can tell he's the one making noise. It drops the corn and starts to stomp its way towards the castle. The Mewman's start to quake in fear as the monster approaches them.

"Don't worry! She'll never make it past the magic shield!" River said

The monster glances down at the magic shield that was all but gone, and simply steps over what is left of it, causing the Mewman's to scream and panic.

"The beast cometh!"

"There's still the moat! Yes. She'll never make it across the magic moat!" River said

The moat was drained of all its water so the monster merely steps across it.

"The magic traffic cones?" River nervously said

The Monster just steps through the cones with no issues.

"We're about to die, y'all! Run!"

The Mewman's take off running, screaming their heads off as the Monster stomped their way to the village.

"Hey! Thanks for partyin' us all to our deaths!" A woman shouted

"She's right. I'm not fit to rule," River stammers sadly.

He takes off his crown and hands it to Marcia.

Marcia stared at the shiny head ornament and her eyes go wide. "Oooh shiny-No!" She shook her head looking out the retreating River. "Wait a minute!"

River closed the balcony doors locking them behind him.

"Hey!" Marcia exclaimed

River cried walking over to a couch taking a seat.

Marcia banged on the doors before poking her head through a small window.

"You locked me out!"

"Oh, no. Now I lock you on the balcony," River cried

"It's okay. Just unlock the door," Marcia said

River cried covering his face. "I can't do anything right! I can't do anything right!" He sobbed pulling his cape over his head.

Marcia purses her lips then sighs. She stepped back from the window and tossed River's crown inside. Then she runs to the window and jumps, diving thorough, as she lands on the floor Marcia somersaults once before standing up. She dusted herself off before picking up River's crown, approaching the sobbing man.

"Hey! Pull yourself together, man!" Marcia said, pulling away River's cape.

"Moon should never have left me in charge. "The people love you," she said. "Keep them happy and safe," she said. And now, because of me, the kingdom is defenseless!" River said

He gestures before him where two knights were laid out in a hot tub all partied out.

"Moon didn't even tell me where she was taking Star. What if something happened to them? No wonder I want to party all the time. I'm worried sick!" River said

"I'm worried, too. That's why I brought the care package to check up on Star. Do you have any idea when they'll be back?" Marcia asked

"It's funny you should ask, Marcia. Let me show you something. Whenever Moon goes away, she always puts together a few outfits for me, so I know what to wear while she's gone. But...But look at this!"

River points to a large closet filled with dozens upon dozens of outfits for River.

"Oh...That...That is not a good sign," Marcia mumbled

"She's got them piled up all the way to the top of the room. So it's probably she's not coming back…" River started crying again. "...anytime soon, is she, Marcia?"

"I-uhm I don't know," Marcia spoke trying to comfort the crying man. "But they can't ever come home if they don't have a home to come home to."

From outside the castle, they can hear the Monster stomping and growling as they got closer to the castle.

"Oh, right, yes. I see what you're saying. This is the end of everything," River whimpered

He sat on the ground in a fetal position and started rocking back and forth.

"No! That's not what I mean! It means you have to go lead your people," Marcia said

"But they hate me! They've never hated me before," River said

Marcia narrows her eyes in determination. She grabbed River forcing him to turn around and face her.

"It doesn't matter." Marcia held the crown out to River. "You're the only king they have."

"You sound just like my wife." River sniffles. "And that's just what I need!" River smiles, grabbing his crown putting it one. "You my dear, are one day going to make some hearty fool a better man."

Marcia smiled, "Why thank you!"

River ran back to the balcony Marcia right behind him.

"My people! Please, listen!"

The Mewman's below continue to scream and panic.

"We all-"

A man picked up a piece of corn and chucked it at River. It was about to hit him but Marcia's hand shot out catching it mere inches from River's face.

"Nice catch Marcia." River faced his people not at all upset at the corn chucking. "I deserved that. Look, if the queen were here, she'd fix all this with her magic! Well, she's not here! But that doesn't mean we should cower in fear. We still have each other, and together, we can defeat this monster!"

"No offense, King, but you're a terrible king!"

"You're right. I stink at this. But right now, I'm all you've got and you're all I've got," River said

"We can't do anything!"

"We don't have any weapons or magic!"

"We don't need magic to do extraordinary things. Dentist! Construction worker! Remember when you two worked together to dislodge that tooth-shaped rock in the road? Blacksmith! You worked with the turtle sanctuary to make iron shells for the turtles in need! And you two weirdos hold the record for the longest staring contest! We all can do something unique and helpful, and that's Mewni's greatest strength! And it's what Queen Moon loves the most about all of you!"

The Mewman's start to mumble agreeing.

"Yeah, we are pretty good!"

"Uh, I don't think any of that's gonna help us defeat the monster."

"So what do you say? Let's show that monster what happens when it messes with Mewmans!" River said

The Mewman's cheer as River hopped off the balcony.

"Huh! Foolduke, fetch us our loincloths!" River said

"What?" Marcia said

The main gates of the village are thrown open and a crowd of Mewman's shout charging out with River and Marcia in the lead. River only wore his crown with a green loincloth, along with some mud decorating his body like war paint. Marcia took the loincloth given to her but tied it over her clothes.

River got on all fours and licked the ground. "He's near."

"Yeah, he's right there," Marcia stated, pointing to her left.

River climbed a tall hill with a staff in hand. "Hey, monster!"

The Monster stopped and turned to River.

"Go away!" River said

The Monster stomped their way over to River. "Go away? But you're the one who called me over."

"What? I didn't call you over," River said perplexed

"Yes, you did. You kept motioning, 'Come here, come here,'" The Monster said

"Oh, no, I was motioning, 'Go away, go away!'" River said

"Oh, no. That's, 'Come here, come here.'" The Monster said

"No, it's, 'Go away, go away!'" River said

"Ugh. So you're telling me I came all this way for nothing? I got, like, a thousand splinters on this foot."

The Monster lifted their foot to reveal crushed rubble, a fence, and even a Mewman.

"Help!" The man whispered

"You might consider widening the streets a little. What a waste of my day." The Monster grumbled before turning and walking away.

The Mewman's start to cheer happily as the monster left. River grabbed Marcia wrapping an arm around her shoulder.

"We did it!" River cheered

"That was probably the easiest monster fight I've ever been a part of," Marcia said

"Everyone, I'm holding one final off-the-chain party at the castle in honor of all of you!" River said

"Three cheers for King River!"

"Hip, hip, hooray! Hip, hip, hooray!"

"-Hooray!"

Everyone pauses as they heard an odd voice, unfamiliar to them all. They all turn and find none other than Ludo, along with his giant spider and eagle.

"Hip, hip...hooray."

Ludo smirks lifting his hand as an army of rats swarms the area.
