Welcome back! Sorry for another long delay but you know…2020 happened.
Hope everyone's doing ok. It's been hard to get writing in. I'm an essential employee so overtime has been abundant. I also got Covid myself.
A special treat though. This chapter is edited! I have a new editor so special thanks to Nova42! To show your thanks for making the chapter readable check out their stories. Highly recommend.
Also at the end of the chapter I'm taking the filter off. You will get my unfiltered (mostly) review of Frozen 2. Was it great? Was it awful? Somewhere in between?
On with the story!
The Frozen and Pierced Heart
Chapter 66
Elsa awoke with a start.
"Anna!" she called out. She gasped for air as she tried to gain her bearings. Where was she? She tried to remember how she got here. Everything was a blur. She tried to get out of the bed, but a stabbing pain in her stomach and all-encompassing ache stopped her before she could get very far.
"Don't get up your majesty!" a man rushed over. "You have been through quite the ordeal."
"Who are you?" Elsa asked cautiously.
"Dr. Adams. You're very lucky to be alive, my queen." he responded. "You were brought here just in time."
Memories rushed to the surface of her mind. The city under attack. The castle burning. A crossbow bolt striking her. Erik carrying her through the snow.
"Erik," She said, looking around. "I mean Captain Slovak, my guard. Where is he?"
"He's fine." Dr Adams raised his hands in a calming manor. "He collapsed from exhaustion soon after bringing you in. He pushed himself to exhaustion carrying you all that distance."
"Can I see him?"
"It's best if you stay off your feet for now, majesty." the doctor replied. "I will let you know the moment he wakes. For now, there are some others that wish to speak to you."
Elsa nodded and the doctor left, returning shortly with a few others. One of them she recognized.
"Governor Tippet. Good to see you're safe." She said greeting the regional governor.
The man bowed. "Same for you, your majesty. We feared the worst when we heard about the attack."
"What's the situation?" Elsa asked.
"Well, the agenda I was preparing for our upcoming meeting has changed slightly. We have evacuated most of the surrounding villages and farms inside the city walls. The port is frozen over. We still have supplies and food for the people. A month or so at least. We might be able to stretch that out if needed. Colonel Braxton here can give you the military situation." he nodded to the man in uniform that came in with him.
Elsa nodded toward the colonel. "Your majesty, the enemy has limited their movements outside the capitol. Mostly detachments and scouts. That is enough to disrupt us with our main army away though. We can hold off an attack, but if they brought their full force to bear, we could only hold them off for so long. There are several ships blockading this port as well. Probably to prevent us from sending for help."
Elsa thought for a moment. All her life she had been studying and training to lead her kingdom. Preparing for any emergency that threatened her kingdom. But she was no tactician. She would have given that responsibility to her commanders. However, most of them were deployed with the majority of her forces to assist an ally in what was clearly becoming a rouse. Those that stayed behind were dead or in other parts of the kingdom. To top it off, General Tyros led her enemy. Widely regarded as the greatest known strategic mind in the world.
"We have to get word to our fleet and get them turned toward home. They will outnumber the invasion force. Can we fight our way through the blockade?"
Braxton shook his head. "We have no naval ships. Just merchant marine. They would be no match for ships of the line. Even if they could break through any that remained wouldn't be able to fight their way out of the fjord before hitting the open sea."
Elsa sighed and rubbed her temples. "Alright. Do have any other options?"
"We are working on developing a strategy, your majesty." Braxton told her. "Our resources are limited, however. Right now, our best option is to hold out until the fleet realizes what happened."
Elsa did not like the thought of sitting around while her people were captive. But for now, she couldn't see another way.
"How long before I can leave the hospital? I have a lot of work to do." She asked.
"I can't say for certain yet." The doctor replied. "You need to rest and recover. I wouldn't recommend you try standing or walking around for several days. Possibly weeks. The arrow did significant damage. It will be some time before you fully recover.
Elsa winced, closing her eyes. How could she lead a kingdom from a hospital bed? She had been awake only a few minutes and already she was feeling fatigued. She wasn't going to be much use to anyone for a while. And she didn't even have her advisors to assist.
Suddenly her eyes snapped open as she remembered something. "Governor. I have something important to tell you."
"Elsa!"
Erik snapped awake and looked around in a panic. He had been trapped in a nightmare; he had been carrying Elsa through unending snow only for her to die in his arms. He sat up and looked around franticly for her. When he didn't see her, he got out of the bed to find her, pain shoot through his legs the moment he put weight on them sending him crashing to the ground.
As he tried to stand, a trio of men ran into the room and stopped him.
"Easy there, captain! You need to rest!" one of them said, helping him to his feet.
Erik groaned. "The queen?"
"The queen will be fine thanks to you." The man said as he helped Erik sit back in the bed. "She awoke a few hours ago."
"I need to see her." Erik ordered.
The man shook his head. "She needs to rest. As do you. Carrying a person over such a long distance was not exactly good for you. You need to heal."
"I don't have that luxury. We have a war to win." Erik argued.
"Yes, we do." The man agreed. "But we stand a better chance of that if our soldiers are in fighting shape."
Erik really couldn't argue against that. He wouldn't be much of a duelist laying on his back.
"In the meantime." The man continued motioning the other two from the room. "There are some others who would like to have a word with you."
A few moments later, the two men returned with several other people. One who he recognized as Governor Tippet.
"Captain Slovak." Tippet addressed him. "Good to see you awake. I must commend you for your actions. You have done Arendelle proud."
"Just doing my duty, Governor. What is the situation?" Erik replied.
"Straight to the point as usual." Tippets answered. The two had met several times when Elsa and Tippets met to discuss matters of state. Tippets continued to explain the situation as he had told Elsa. Colonel Braxton also explained the situation with the blockade. When he finished, he pointed to a ring on Erik's finger.
"We also need to discuss that."
Erik looked down at the signet Elsa had given him, denoting that she had given control of the kingdom to him.
"She gave it to me as a precaution." He replied. "Seeing as she is fine, it should be returned to her."
"Eventually, but not now." Tippets said. "The queen is going to be out of commission for a while. She told me herself that her decision to give you the signet stands. You are the current leader of Arendelle."
Erik's head swam with that notion. The burden of responsibility just placed on his shoulders was immense. Even overwhelming. He wanted to say that he couldn't do it. But he remembered Colonel Davis once telling him that a leader showing doubt was one of the fastest ways to destroy hope. Instead, he composed himself and thought carefully.
"Very well. Governor. I leave the daily running of your territory to you. Queen Elsa has always spoken highly of your leadership abilities."
He then addressed Braxton. "We need to get every available commander we can. Plus, anyone from the scouts and merchant marines. We need to come up with another way to break this siege. Tyros isn't going to let us sit and wait for help."
Kyle's attempt at a one-man army hadn't lasted long. They discovered him shortly after the enemy took the castle and the city. However, because of his youth and position as a stable boy, there was little attention paid to him. He was told to just carry on with his job and stay out of trouble. Even the mercenary soldier he had knocked unconscious didn't know it was him. They allowed him to leave the castle and venture into the city. As he walked through the streets, he noticed the people were slowly getting back to somewhat normal routines. While Arendelle was heavily patrolled by enemy troops and far more restricted it seemed, the enemy leaders didn't want to give the impression that the people were prisoners.
As he walked down a narrow and quiet street, someone suddenly grabbed him pulling him into the shadows, he tried to call out but found his mouth covered. He struggled, but his assailant was too strong. It wasn't until his attacker spoke that he stopped struggling.
"Quiet boy! Relax." A harsh voice whispered.
Kyle recognized that voice. As the grip loosened, he turned around to see a member of the royal guard.
Sergeant Falkner starred down at him with hard eyes. "How did you get out of the castle?"
Kyle shrugged. "They don't see me as a threat. They have me go about my usual chores."
Falkner grinned. "That's perfect. Well son, it may not be ideal, but you're going to have to grow up fast. We need you to pass information along."
"How would I do that?" Kyle asked nervously.
"Just keep your ears open. When you go out, report to me or other members of the guard you recognize. We'll be in this area. It would surprise you what people let slip around those that blend into the background." Falkner explained.
Kyle nodded. "I think I can do that."
Falkner patted him on the shoulder. "Good. It may not seem like it, but you may have just become the most important person in the effort to retake the castle."
As soon as Erik was able, he was up and about meeting with everyone he could and making plans. Elsa joined for limited amounts of time. Despite the doctor's insistence that she stay in bed Elsa felt she needed to be up and about as much as possible. She needed a cane to get around for the time being though. While she had never been vain, she felt somewhat embarrassed to be seen hobbling around on it. Few people actually saw her, though as some suggested she hide this limitation so not to dampen the peoples spirts further.
During the evenings she would speak to Erik alone as he brought her reports on how things were progressing. While Erik was still uncomfortable with the role, she had given him, Elsa had to admit he was exceeding her expectations. He commanded the respect of those who outranked him both military and government official. He knew how to delegate and assume responsibility. While privately questioning his abilities to her, in public he carried himself with confidence. and were more experienced. He knew how to delegate but still assume responsibility for all aspects of the effort. Despite questioning himself to her privately, he had tremendous confidence in public.
Although they came from opposite upbringings, Elsa found they worked incredibly well together. They had known each other for years. While Elsa had sought his advice on occasion and valued his insight, it was usually related to personal matters. He had always been more of an assistant in those regards then a member of a team. The last few days it was like she had been discovering a new side to him. While he heavily sought her advice, he wasn't overdependent. And when it came to tactical matters where he was more experienced, he still asked her opinion and never disregarded her suggestions. Elsa found herself wondering if there was possibly a better position for him.
She also found herself enjoying his company in these trying times. While it wasn't much, they found time to just sit and talk. It was like an island of peace amidst a sea of troubles. She worried what almost happened out in the mountains might have damaged their personal relationship. But now they seemed to be closer than ever. While this in some ways made the nature of their relationship even more confusing to her, she was happy.
She had little time to contemplate these thoughts and feelings though.
It didn't take long for Erik and the others to come up with an idea. One morning Elsa joined him and the other leaders. She noticed several others had joined them as well. She recognized the uniforms as captains of merchant marine ships.
Elsa, Erik, and some others were standing on a balcony a few feet above the gathered sailors. A railing hiding Elsa's use of the cane from view.
Erik smiled at her, then turned and walked down some stairs to address them. "Captains. Thank you for coming. We have come up with a plan and we need your help."
The merchant marine captains while professionals lacked the same discipline and protocol of the navy. A few smirked or shook their heads, and one chuckled as he answered. "If you're looking for someone to assault the blockade, you're barking up the wrong tree cap. Don't get me wrong, we'd love to take it to these bastards. But we know the difference between a good scrap and certain death. I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere for your cannon fodder."
Erik shook his head. "We have no intention of sacrificing you in a foolhardy attack. What we are looking for is to run the blockade."
This time most of the captains laughed and the same one spoke again. "So, you intend to sacrifice us in a plain stupid endeavor? At least with an attack we can die fighting."
"Look what we need are reinforcements to drive the enemy from our home. The best way we can do that is to catch the army and get them turned around home." Erik explained.
Another captain spoke up. "A fine plan in theory. But the thing is, eventually the army and navy will realize what's happening and turn around on their own. We just have to hold out. The enemy doesn't have the means to hold the entire country. Why waste lives when we can just sit tight?" She asked.
Erik nodded. "I thought of that as well. But the problem is, we may not have that kind of time. No doubt the enemy already has a plan for dealing with the situation they find themselves in. General Tyros is well known for his thorough planning. So, we need to shorten their time table. Plus, when the army does arrive, they will need to know where they can land safely. So, this will be a two-part operation. We will need someone to get the message and the landing spots to the fleet. Meanwhile, the troops here at home will have to clear and secure these spots for the army to land."
"I know it's high risk," He went on. "likely whoever does this will probably not survive the attempt. But if we sat back and wait for Tyros to make his next move, we won't be able to stop him. This is our best hope. So, I'm asking for the volunteers with the fastest ships. I'll give you some time to discuss and think about it."
With that he turned and walked back up the stairs where he found Elsa giving him a troubled look.
"Captain, may I speak to you privately?"
He followed her inside. Once the door closed, she sighed and leaned on her cane without turning around.
"You realized you just asked them to volunteer to die?"
Erik nodded and answered softly. "I know"
"So why this course of action? And why not ask me first?" Her fists clenched and her voice rising.
"The others commanders and I could think of no better alternative. This decision needed to be made quickly. You entrusted me with this task."
Elsa shook her head and turned to face him. "I noticed you haven't told me about the second part of the plan. Who's going to lead that part?"
Erik straightened himself. "I can ask no one but myself to do that."
Elsa's eyes saddened. "So, you're going to risk yourself as usual. Were you hoping I wouldn't find out until it was too late?"
Erik sighed. "You're right. It was wrong to keep this from you. But I knew you would try to change my mind, and this needs to happen quickly. Lives are on the line."
"I know that," Elsa nearly spats. "But there is no reason to sacrifice lives unnecessarily. When it comes to my people, you need to consult me before you ask them to put their lives at risk."
"I already have had to do that. It's part of my job as a military commander." Erik countered.
Elsa gritted her teeth. He was right. But the entire ordeal still upset her, and with the lives already lost, she refused to give in so easily. "This is different. You're asking civilians to risk it all."
"The merchant marines are used to risk." Erik countered. "They face pirates and raiders all the time."
"You still should have told me." Elsa said angrily. "Do you really think I can't handle the tough decisions?"
Erik sighed and walked over and gently took her hands. Elsa thought about pulling back but didn't. "I'm sorry," he said. "I guess I still take my protective responsibilities to far sometimes. I knew what this would be asking and took it upon myself so you wouldn't have to. I should have let you make this call."
"No." Elsa said with conviction. "I gave you that signet for a reason. I do trust you. And we promised we do this together. So, this is a decision we make together."
She thought for a moment shifting her gaze. "You're not wrong. Sometimes when in command, a hard choice has to be made. As queen, I will probably have to ask others to make sacrifices again in the future." She turned her eyes back to his. "But that doesn't mean I'm not going to do everything in my power to minimize the risk to my people. I'll use my powers to assist the ships."
"Elsa, you're not strong enough to try that…" Erik started.
Elsa smirked and put a finger to his lips. "There's that over protectiveness we just talked about. I can't ask my people to take risks if I'm not willing to do that same."
She turned around and moved to the door. "Come, Captain. We have a kingdom to liberate."
Erik followed feeling like he just fell a little bit more in love.
Once explained Elsa would use her powers to assist the ships in running the blockade, they found themselves with three ships volunteering for the task. Elsa insisted on meeting the captains herself.
"Your majesty. May I present, Captain Angela Cuthbert of the Spearfish, Thomas Gellert of the Sea Hag, and Robin Nills of the Night Swan."
All three bowed to her, she smiled but spoke in a serious tone. "Thank you all for volunteering, but before this continues, I want to make sure you and your crews know absolutely what you're getting into."
"Seems pretty straightforward. Charge headlong into death itself, save the day, be the hero. Is there a statue being planned for me already?" Captain Gellert smirked.
"Make sure you leave your ego at the dock. It will slow you down." Captain Cuthbert growled.
"Well, I have to give you some sort of chance to catch up." Gellert grinned.
"I hope you can handle yourself out there without me. You seem to be slipping since you got your own boat." Cuthbert crossed her arms.
"Hey darling, in a way you're always with me. That's why I named my boat after you."
"They argue like an old married couple." Erik muttered to Captain Nills.
"Former old married couple." Nills responded.
"That explains a lot," Erik responded. "Is it going to be a problem?"
"No. They fight all the time but both always get the job done." Nills replied.
Once the former couple resolved their spat, Erik briefed the captains on the rest of the plan.
"…before you depart, I will give each of you a map and instructions for Admiral Hauge. In the event you believe you're going to be boarded or they disable your ship, you must burn these. They can under no circumstances fall into enemy hands. Do you understand?"
All three nodded. "Good. Get your ships prepared."
Erik and Elsa started walking back to the building they were using as a headquarters when Erik noticed several soldiers approaching on horseback. One of them he recognized.
"I'll be right back." He told Elsa as he walked back toward the riders.
The riders galloped up quickly and a young brown-haired woman in a scout corps uniform jumped off and saluted with a grin on her face.
"Captain Erik Slovak. Glad to see you're not dead despite your best efforts."
Erik smiled and returned the salute. "Hello Kara. It's been awhile. I thought you would be with the task force."
Kara relaxed her poise. "I would have. But we were up north when the order came down. So, my unit got stuck with home front patrol. Although it seems this is where the action is."
"Have you found any other military units?" Erik asked hopefully.
"Pockets here and there, but nothing significant. Right now, Jaketa seems to be largest military concentration in western Arendelle. Possibly the kingdom."
"What about Fort Helsing?" Erik asked.
"I haven't been able to get that far East." Kara shook her head. "The capitol is impassable and the mountain passes are likely being watched. I have been looking for an opening to the east side of the kingdom to establish a connection. But mostly been concentrating on this side. Limited on scouts in my command so focusing on establishing a network on this end."
"Probably for the best." Erik nodded and motioned for her to follow him. "We will need to establish contact with others though. We'll have to compare maps."
"Can do." Kara smiled. "So, what's it like to be back in the action?"
"Oh, trust me, I have gotten more action as a guard then I ever dreamed." Erik murmured.
"So, I heard. A few months ago, I thought I would be attending your funeral." She turned serious. "So, after this ordeal is over, are you ready to come back to regular service? You have done more than enough to guarantee notice. I know it's a prestigious assignment. But it's supposed to be a short-term post. Any longer would just be a waste of your talents. You're meant for the front line and for command. Everyone was surprised when you left the regiment to become a member of the guard. Even more surprised that you have stayed on this long. The queen sounds like an impressive woman, I'll grant you. But you already took a bullet for her. I'd say have done your duty there."
Erik shook his head. "I'm happy where I am for now. Don't get me wrong. There are times I want to return. But this is where I belong right now."
He noticed Elsa waiting as they approached. "Your majesty. This is Lieutenant Kara Volseg. We served together in the first back in the day. She is leading a scout squad in the area."
Kara bowed. "Your majesty. It's an honor to finally meet you."
Elsa smiled. "Pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant. Glad to see you have arrived safely."
Kara grinned. "Ran into a little trouble, but these invaders don't know the countryside like I do."
A soldier came running up and saluted. "Captain. We need your input at the docks."
"Very well, I'll be right there." Erik answered.
Kara smiled. "Go ahead, I can escort the queen back for you. With your permission, your majesty."
Elsa smirked. "The Captain seems to trust you and I trust his judgment. Perhaps you can tell me some embarrassing stories."
Kara laughed. "I think I might have a few."
She smiled and waved as Erik groaned to himself.
Elsa laughed. "I have a hard time seeing Captain Slovak as a prankster."
"Oh yea. Never really crossed any lines mind you. But he had no problem causing trouble with his friends. Although he could never see a prank coming for him either," Kara replied.
"So, I'm guessing you took advantage of that?" Elsa asked.
"Perhaps," Kara smirked.
"It's strange," Elsa commented. "When he first became my guard, he was all business. It took him awhile to warm up to me or anyone else."
"After the Fernada disaster he was never quite the same," Kara paused. "But if I may Your Majesty, you have seemed to bring out his good side again."
Elsa blushed. "It wasn't me. I'm sure it was others in the castle. Besides, he has been more of a help to me. Before my…incident, Erik was one of the few who knew about my powers. He helped me confront my fears."
Kara didn't miss the fact the Elsa had used Erik's name instead of his title but didn't mention it. "Well, it sounds like you two are a good for each other."
"Yes, it is nice to have him around," Elsa said quietly.
Kara could tell the queen was becoming a little uncomfortable with this conversation, so she decided to change the subject.
"You know I may not get another chance to say this, I appreciate what you have been doing."
Elsa smiled at her. "Thank you. I do my best. I want to make sure Arendelle stands for the good of all."
"I know it can't be easy," Kara said. "I imagine the nobility is always pressuring you and testing you. I mean, I'm a common born woman who is an officer. While not uncommon anymore, there still those stuck in the past who see me as an interloper. I can only imagine how much harder it is for someone of your station."
Elsa shook her head but still smiled. "You wouldn't be wrong. Some nobles still treat me as a little girl. Even some of the women of the court think I step out of bounds. Hardly a day goes by where there isn't someone trying to pressure me to find and marry a king. Not that I'm completely opposed to the idea. Being Queen is a lot of responsibility. It would be nice to have someone share the load. But it would have to be the right person. Someone who wants to be a partner. Not someone to waltz in and work their will."
Kara smiled to herself. I think I know an excellent candidate for you. She thought.
Elsa frowned and looked out the window. "Perhaps if I had someone else, we wouldn't be in this situation. I can't help but feel like I missed something to be fooled this badly."
"This isn't your fault," Kara insisted. "From what you told me, we were betrayed by someone who is supposed to be our ally. Besides, you're not the first-person Tyros has tricked in battle."
"Perhaps," Elsa mumbled. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to unload on you. It's been a frustrating few weeks."
"Think nothing of it." Kara waved her hand. "And don't worry, anything you told me is strictly confidential."
"I appreciate that." Elsa said. "It is nice having a woman my age to talk to. Perhaps I should make you a member of the royal guard."
Kara bowed. "I'm honored. But a scout likes to run free. My place is among the mountains and valleys."
Elsa nodded, then sat in silence for a moment in contemplation before speaking again. "Lieutenant, I wonder if I might ask a personal favor."
"Of course."
"You said you know the countryside. Is it possible you could find a way to Fort Helsing and find out if my sister made it there? I have heard nothing since the attack. I need to know if she's ok." Elsa said with a hint of sadness in her voice.
Kara strode over to a map and started looking over enemy troop movements that had been marked while muttering to herself. "Let's see, most of the southern passes are being watched. I could swing up north by the barrier but that would take too long…" She studied the map for a few minutes then exclaimed. "There! It's perfect!"
Elsa grabbed her cane and hobbled over to look at the map. "I don't understand. That's Sperry Glacier. There's no pass there. You'll need to climb over the ice sheets."
"Most of the year, yes," Kara explained. "In fact, I have made that climb. But I may not have to. During the early spring when the Glacier starts to melt but is still solid enough to avoid serious movement, a cave opens up through it. The combination of your winter during the summer should give it the same effect."
"Isn't that dangerous?" Elsa asked.
Kara grinned from ear to ear. "It wouldn't be any fun if it wasn't," She whirled her pistol in her hand and holstered it in one a single motion. "Besides, I have been through that glacier several times and since it's not on any official maps, the enemy won't know about it. Few do."
"I can't ask you…" Elsa started.
"Hey if it was my sister I would want to know too. Plus, this will get us in contact with the other side of Arendelle." Kara said.
They both looked up as Erik walked through the door. "Your maje—what the!" He exclaimed as a cup of water perched above the door fell on him.
Elsa covered her mouth as she burst out with laughter while Kara grinned and looked over at her. "Told you. Never knew when to expect a prank."
Once Kara had gotten her supplies, Erik walked her back to where her horse was waiting.
"It was good to see you again. Just wish it was under better circumstances." Erik told her.
"Well, how bout we save the kingdom and we can see how things are going then." She smiled at him. "I can see why you stay with the royal guard. That is one hell of a woman you found."
Erik couldn't help but blush. "She is something. But it's not like that. Protecting her is part of the job."
"Well, when your king, I'm sure your duties will change up some. I knew the castle guard could fast track someone, but you're trying to go straight to the top." She giggled.
"It's not like that," Erik protested.
Kara mounted her horse. "Oh, trust me, I know you have no desire to be king. But it comes with the girl. Does she know how you feel?"
Erik just stared up at her.
Kara shook her head. "Or perhaps you haven't admitted your feelings to yourself yet. Well, I can't tell just by watching you two that you are smitten Captain. I'm pretty sure she has feelings for you as well but just doesn't realize it yet."
She spurred her horse before he could answer. "Keep her safe. We need her. And don't forget to send me a wedding invitation!"
It was near sunset when Elsa addressed the crews of the volunteering ships.
"Sailors of the merchant marines. Arendelle is in your debt for what your about to do. Your bravery will always be remembered. God speed. And God willing we will meet again soon."
With that, the crews raced aboard their vessels. They had stripped down of all excess equipment to make them fast as possible. Elsa's job was to provide wind to speed them up. When she reminded them that any wind she could create always came with snow and cold, they scoffed and spoke of the Arendelle's sailor's familiarity with the cold.
Elsa also received a crash course in naval tactics. Any ships attempting to intercept the blockade runners Elsa would attempt to freeze into place, limiting pursuit abilities and firing angles.
She climbed to the top of the harbor lighthouse so she could get the clearest view. They launched at night, when the enemy's visibility would be limited, though that meant hers would be as well. While the others who came up with her talked about the operation, she closed her eyes and focused her energies. The lives of three ship crews would soon be in her hands.
"Your majesty, it's time." Erik told her.
Elsa nodded and summoned an icy wind to blow down the fiord. She gradually increased the intensity and range of the storm. The idea was to make it seem more of a natural occurrence rather than her powers.
As she kept this up, spotters in the tower watched the enemy ships in the fiord to see how they reacted.
"Looks like one's getting curious. It's approaching the harbor."
"If it gets too close, we have the harbor guns turn it around." Erik replied.
The harbor had a garrison and were prepared to defend itself from an attack. The enemy ships out in the fjord knew that and kept a certain distance to avoid the risk of being fired upon from shore.
After a few minutes Elsa heard Erik say. "Alright, they are getting too nosey. Signal to engage."
Moments later cannons from below roared to life, firing on the ship. Enough to send a message. It returned fire but quickly turned around, knowing a prolonged fight with the fort would be unwise.
"Is this helpful or a hindrance?" Elsa asked one of the naval officers there with them.
"Could go either way. The other ships might focus too much on the firefight. On the other hand, it draws more attention in this direction."
Erik suddenly barked out. "Signal the runners, tell them to depart."
Captain Angela Cuthbert stood on the deck of her ship, bundled against the cold as she waited for the signal.
The plan was crazy. They would sail near blind in a magical storm through an enemy blockade. While they had the magical ice cover from the queen, it had a disadvantage as well. It would limit their visibility and the enemy.
From the shore, a flag waved in a dim lamplight. The signal.
"Set sail! Helm launch straight ahead, then swing wide to port. I want some distance between us and that scrimmage." She ordered firmly yet quietly.
As the wind hit the sails, the ship launched forward. She kept her eyes scanning for all the good it did. So far it seemed their departure was undetected. Getting away from the harbor would be a critical part, but also the easiest. If detected early, the harbor guns could cover them. However, if the enemy penned them in and forced them to withdraw to the harbor, they would likely never get another chance at this.
The occasional flashes to her left were muffled in the blowing snow and fog, but it gave her an idea of the position of at least one ship.
"Hard to port." She signaled.
The ship made a hard turn, headed down the fiord. The other two runners following her lead. As the ships turned, she caught sight of the Bradford, an Arendelle warship, coming out of the harbor behind them. While it didn't have the speed to make the run, it might be able to act as bait or give them some covering fire.
The wind caught the sails flush and the ship lurched forward. This was it. While most of the enemy fleet was deployed around the capital or other ports of Arendelle, she knew there were a dozen or so warships between them and the open sea.
They were fast approaching the flashes from the enemy ship. While it was running more perpendicular to the shore rather than out further into the fjord, there was still a chance of getting hit by friendly fire from the fort.
She turned her gaze to the hills outside the city. After a few minutes she saw it. Several flashes of light. To help guide the ships, several sailors and gone out with signal lanterns into the hills and mountains around the area to attempt to give positions of enemy ships. While their visibility wouldn't be much better than hers, the queen was going to attempt to create gaps in the fog and blowing snow.
"Starboard seven degrees then hold her steady," She ordered.
She watched the coast for the signal lights. So far, nothing in her way. This crazy plan might actually work.
Then a cannon shot rang out.
"They've been spotted!"
Elsa opened her eyes and grabbed a spotting scope. Through the wind and fog, she saw the unmistakable flashes of cannon fire.
"Time to get creative, Your Majesty." Erik said.
Elsa nodded and swallowed hard. Time to really focus her energies, no holding back, no hiding. She just hoped it would be enough.
Captain Cuthbert barked orders to her crew, no longer worried about staying quiet. There was no hiding now.
"Light the signal lanterns! Helm run a zigzag pattern, keep them guessing where we are!"
She looked behind them and noticed two ships they had passed turning to pursue. Before they could get turned around though, ice sheets formed under them, locking them in place. Cuthbert allowed herself a small sigh of relief. At least the queen was still watching them.
The relief was short-lived.
"Captain! Three vessels approaching on an intercept course! The Night Swan is about to be flanked!"
Angela turned and saw the Night Swan had gotten ahead but was on course to sail between two enemy ships. Right into a kill box.
Captain Howard of the Bradford got his ship into position.
"Open fire! Split your fire among the targets. We don't have the time to sink anything, just try to draw their fire away from the blockade runners!"
His ship's guns opened up. Spiting lead in multiple directions at the closing enemy ships. While his sloop was no match for multiple ships, hopefully, they could present enough of a threat that the enemy would turn their attention on them.
A few shots came in their direction, but the two ships focused on the Night Swan could not be dissuaded from their prey.
Elsa found herself trying multiple precision uses with her magic. Freezing vessels while trying to create winds blowing over a narrow space one direction and the opposite direction in another narrow band. The effect was dizzying. Her weakened state making things even more difficult.
"Your Majesty, the Night Swan!"
Elsa turned her attention to the ship that was about to be caught between two enemy vessels. It was too close to the other ships to freeze them without catching it as well. It was too late and too close to try multiple wind directions. She desperately tried to think of something, but nothing came to mind. All she could do is watch in horror as they reduced the Night Swan to splinters in a hail of cannon fire.
Angela watched helplessly, then felt even more helpless as one of the enemy ships behind hers was turned broadside, getting ready to fire. She winced and braced for the worst.
Then watched in shock as the Bradford rammed the other vessel, knocking it off course.
She had no time to relax. There were still several other ships to get by.
"Helm! Starboard thirty-five degrees!" She ordered as she saw a ship ahead angling toward them. Fortunately, Elsa was on top of things and froze it in place with its broadside turned away from them.
They could fire on them from the other side once her ship passed by, though. She would have to move further toward the opposite side of the fjord to minimize incoming fire. She was about to order her ship to swing wide when a horrific crunching sound came from stern.
"What was that?"
"Captain…they hit the rudder." A crewman answered in a defeated voice.
Angela's heart sank into her stomach. So that was it. With the control of her ship compromised, she could only run near straight, making an easy target.
More cannonballs slammed into the hull and zipped by. Her crew ran about the ship, taking cover and trying to turn.
"Captain, shall we run up the white flag?" Her first mate asked. "We haven't fired. We will probably be treated with mercy."
Angela contemplated this, she lit a match and set fire to the battle plans. That would be the sensible thing. As merchant marines, they would probably just be held until the outcome of the invasion was decided. If they tried to keep running the blockade, the enemy ships would have no choice but to keep firing until they were stopped.
Then she noticed the Sea Hag bringing up the rear. The last hope of getting the word out and the fleet turned around home. Without the other two ships, it would be the sole target and probably wouldn't survive the run.
"Reduce speed. Try to keep it matched with the Sea Hag." She ordered.
Her first mate swallowed hard, realizing what she was saying, but complied. It wasn't long before one of the crew called out. "Captain! The Sea Hag is signaling us!"
Angela ran to the side to a signal lamp and looked through her spotting glass.
"Angela, what are you doing?" The light signal coded.
Angela grabbed the lantern and worked the flaps, signaling back. "Saving your ass as usual. Now keep close as possible to the starboard shore while we screen your port."
"Don't do this. Drop Anchor and surrender!" The signal came back.
"Now at the end you don't want to be selfish? You're the last chance for this to work. Now do as I say for once and you just might live. And don't forgot who was right in the end."
With that, she turned back to her crew as the cannon shots peppered her ship as they sailed headlong into the destruction. "Keep it steady. We have to screen as long as possible. I'm sorry it has to end like this. You've been a fine crew. You make Arendelle proud and give her hope. It's been an honor to serve."
Erik sat alone, spinning the signet Elsa had given him between his fingers. The plan had worked. One ship had gotten through. The cost had been high though. Two merchant marine ships and their crews lost. Nearly half of the Bradford's killed or wounded. Several of the signalers captured or killed outside the city. During the planning of the operation, he knew the risk was high, he thought he was prepared to deal with it. Now, in the aftermath, he wasn't sure.
Elsa walked in the room and sat next to him.
"It wasn't your fault. Besides, I'm the one who was supposed to protect them with my powers."
He looked up at her. "It was my plan. I'm the one who has to live with the outcome. You did everything you could."
Elsa took his hand. "I think we both have to live with it. Did we do the right thing?"
Erik sighed. "I think we did the only thing we could do."
"Then we did the right thing. Hard as it is to admit. But if we fail, Arendelle falls to Hans. And who knows how many more will die if he takes over." Elsa said sadly. "Unfortunately, the right thing isn't always easy or even clear. In this case, the right choice feels more like the less wrong choice."
Erik gave her hand a small squeeze. "Well, perhaps after all we have been through, things will become clearer."
The forest grew darker as General Tyros and his guard rode deeper into them. The escaped ship had shortened his timetable. However, the way it had escaped had showed him that Queen Elsa was alive and well. Now he had to decide what to do with that information.
Hans, Wallace, and the Duke had all reacted differently. Hans wanted the army to storm Jaketa, and kill Elsa right now. Wallace wanted to increase the pressure on the capitol to drive Elsa out. The Duke wanted to try to increase the deception they were spreading to turn the nation against the queen.
Tyros wanted more information. Elsa was an opponent unlike any other. And he was still unsure if destroying her was the best option. There were questions on the role she could play in the state of the world. The others would never accept this reasoning. But they had their own short-sighted focus.
Hans only cared about claiming Arendelle as his own. While at one time his ability to deceive and play the part needed to achieve his goals was impressive. His obsession with Arendelle was driving him to more extreme measures.
The Duke simply wanted revenge and restore Weselton's glory after Elsa had embarrassed them. His only true use was the financial and political backing he could provide.
Wallace was the only one to really see a big picture. Having slowly planned this and having contingencies in place. He wanted to make sure Arendelle's influence still spread and he held his power during that process. The problem was he was stuck in his ways, unable to adapt to the changing world. His way of thinking was why several kingdoms around the world had experienced revolts. Wallace was a cunning ally and would probably be a challenging opponent. He provided the political backing and knowledge that Tyros lacked.
Given how things were progressing in the invasion, Tyros decided he needed to take matters into his own hands. But before he decided how to do that, he needed knowledge that didn't seem to exist. Fortunately, his studies of Arendelle history and literature and pointed him to possible answers.
He held his hand up and stopped. Dismounting her addressed his guards. "Wait here. I must proceed alone."
He pulled a map out and followed it into the dark wood. What he found seemed like a legend. But there was always a bit of truth in legends.
He stopped and looked around what looked like a small natural amphitheater. To anyone who might pass through, it didn't look like much. Some small steam geysers and boulders scattered around the ground. But he knew there was more to the Valley of Living Rock than what first glance told.
"Rock trolls!" He spoke firmly as he walked around the valley. "I seek answers."
Not surprisingly nothing happened. Tyros called out several more times before changing his tactic.
"Very well. Perhaps you don't reveal yourselves to outsiders. Perhaps you don't actually exist."
He lit a torch and held it high. "But I intend to find out for sure before I leave this valley."
He strode over to a bush and slowly starting moving the torch to it. But before he lit the woods on fire, a single rock rolled up and transformed into an elderly troll.
"Stop what you are doing!" Pabbie said, holding up a hand.
Tyros smiled and extinguished the torch. "So, it's true. There is something out here."
"What do you want, General? Would you truly stoop so low to get what you desire?" Pabbie asked angrily.
"I do what is necessary for victory." Tyros said in an even voice. "Sometimes it requires doing what others would call…distasteful."
"I can not help you win your war here. Nor would I if I could. While we are not of Arendelle, we will not assist in its downfall." Pabbie insisted.
"Nor would I ask you too." Tyros assured him. "I seek information about Queen Elsa."
"I won't tell you how to defeat her."
"I don't need your help if I wish to do that," Tyros assured him. "I need to understand what she is capable of. How she can affect the state of the world. I have seen her power first hand. Yet its restricted. Almost as if she is afraid to truly use it."
He went on. "From what I have studied, you can see visions. What you may not know is the potential threat Arendelle may soon face. This threat may even find a way to use the queen for their purposes. So, knowing this, what can you see?"
Pabbie frowned as he thought, then waved his hands in the air. "I see…Arendelle's fall…but from the Queens lack of power or using it, I cannot see."
The visions faded. "Fear has always plagued the queen. But I have always suspected her powers are waiting to grow. Her fears can both enhance or restrict her powers. She is still learning to control them. If her powers were truly tested, she might hold back too much…or perhaps lose control and unleash destruction. But perhaps it could cause her to break through to greater command of her abilities." Tyros smiled slightly. "Thank you. I have what I need."
As he turned and walked away, Pabbie called after him. "What will you do?"
Tyros turned. "Put Queen Elsa to the test."
End Chapter 66
Hope it was worth the wait!
Hey at least it wasn't 2 and a half years this time.
Fun note. I used the name of a Star Wars character somewhere in the chapter (could be major or minor) I also used a real world geographical feature. Could you spot them?
The next two chapters have me highly excited. And you should be excited as well. Once again Thanks to Nova42 for editing this! Seriously go check those stories out.
Also want to recommend the story White Birds by Purplebat1. This story is very well written and barely has any followers or reviews. Please give this story that has been lost in the shuffle some love.
Again hope everyone is staying staff.
Leave those reviews after you read.
This is the way
And now for my unfiltered (mostly, gotta keep the T rating) review of Frozen 2.
So the trailers of this movie had me excited. Especially the first teaser. It had a "How to train your dragon" vibe of an epic adventure that kind of grows up with the audience.
That being said Disney has had me concerned the past few years. Focusing more on the quick cash grabs of live action remakes then creating new content. I mean look at those dumpster fires of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Lion King. (good good, I can feel your anger, strike me down in the comments, and your journey towards the dark side will be complete)
Then Disney goes and nearly runs Star Wars into the ground. Not that episodes 8, 9, and Solo are the worst things ever. But they were handled so poorly and with no plan in place.
Not that everything they put out was bad. I enjoyed Onward very much. Plus the Marvel movies have been awesome. But it seems that outside anything made by Pixar, Kevin Feige, or Dave Filoni Disney has been struggling.
So how did I enjoy Frozen 2 when I saw it on opening night last year? (little did I know that, Episode 9 and 1917 would be that last 3 movies I saw in a theater.)
Well the opening started with the same musical number that Frozen closed with. And I immediately did not like it. The first movies musical opening was calmer. Settling you in for the story you were about to see. Giving it a sense of wonder. The grander version of this song at the opening is hitting me in the face like its trying to get me to associate it with the big hit the first one was and it deserves a grander opening.
That being said it's a small thing. Just my personal taste.
The opening scene with the sisters as kids was well done. Setting up the story and expanding the world some. And if you figured out in the first scene that the mom is the one who saved the dad in the forest congratulations you passed the 1st grade. But you know it's a kids movie at heart. Ill let it slide.
We get what is my 4th favorite song in the movie as it transitions nicely to present day. And I'm thinking "ok movie your off to a good start, you got me wondering where this is going"
We then go straight to the exposition song following in the footsteps of the first movie. While decent its kinda distracting hearing Kristoff sing about trying to propose to Anna. Well maybe it will just be a single joke executed well…or drag out though the entire movie. Well that wastes valuable screen time. But that's ok that's only been done in every sitcom ever.
While this song is going on I am writing in my head and I knew exactly where in the timeline of my story the Frozen 2 events are going
One thing I like early is Elsa showing some shyness and uncertainty telling us that old habits are hard to break and she's still growing as a character. To bad that idea is thrown out the window early.
Then the song into the unknown comes along. And while I like the song Disney seemed to be hyping it as the "let it go" of the movie. But personally its my number 3. Can you guess what 1 and 2 are?
I also have to wonder. Does Elsa often belt out ballads from the balcony in the middle of the night?
"Into the unnnknnoooowwwwnnnnnnnn…"
"SHUT UP! ITS 3AM!"
The scenes where they are driven from the city and go to the forest are all fine. Thankfully it's the only time the butt ugly trolls show up. Although this is where I was getting the idea that while Olaf was tolerable in the first movie I was going to want to melt him with a blow torch in this one.
When they enter the barrier and the forest Elsa remarks how beautiful the forest is. And I mean its nice but the hills around Arendelle seem way better. In fact after this point much of the shot of the movie turn ugly. The trailer showed sweeping fall colors and theres barely any of that. Mostly shedding leaves and dying trees. I think the swamp of sadness looked more lively.
After Olaf holds the movie hostage the spirits of the forest assault our heroes. Elsa somehow uses ice to stop the wind (because physics?)
We then meet the Northaldra and some Arendelle. They are mostly pointless but they look great on stickers.
After some arguing and exposition Elsa and Anna figure out who their mother is and reveal that their mother was Northaldra. The northaldra accept this without question. But that's ok they listen to nature despite it seeming to say "You're f&*"
We then get a pretty awesome scene with firefighter Elsa who finds a salamander is a fire spirt. And the thing is just so darn cute although it seems kinda pointless but you can buy a plush one now for 19.99.
Also have to wonder what the Northaldra are thinking while Elsa is talking to this thing. Oh good the woman who promised to save us is nuts.
From there Elsa spends a moment with whats her face. Why her instead of the matriarch of the group? To shut up twitter of course. This character has no other purpose. Even in the offical Disney toy set for the movie she's not included. And if you're looking for chemistry I think Kristoff and Ryder have the most romantic chemistry in the movie.
Speaking of which those two ru off when the rock biters trailer trash cousins wander by. Anna and Elsa decide not to look for him or wait a few minutes and assume he just abandoned them. (Maybe he just had to go take a dump?)
At this point my large cherry Pepsi was starting to affect me. I literally had not eaten all day so had nothing in my stomach to absorb it. So after racing to the bathroom and back I return to see Singing reindeer. And I thought "funny…I don't remember dropping acid in the bathroom."
Ok to be fair (to be faaaaiiiirrrrr) this song has grown on me some. Still haven't downloaded it, but its grown on me a little. Execpt when he sings into a friggin pinecone. &%$* you movie.
Elsa and Anna stumble on their parents ship, surprisingly free of any human remains. And we see Elsa manipulate water…I feel like this is something that should be addressed further.
We then see Elsa not wanting to put her sister in danger send her flying at high speeds down a hill. "Don't worry you have ice for your shattered bones"
We then get that awesome scene of Elsa trying to cross the sea and fighting a water horse that tried to curb stomp her ass into the ocean floor. The spirts of the forest are kinda dicks.
Then comes my number 2 song in the movie "Show yourself" (number 1 if just the soundtrack)
From here things get…confusing.
Elsa is revealed to be the 5th spirit (No S&!) and needed to go to attolhoan to…level up. Because apparently this started as a video game.
She goes to far though. Despite the memories she needs luring her there. Thus she is frozen an sacrifices herself to send the message via ice to Anna.
We see Olaf die (Hallelujah!) and Anna sing my favorite song in the movie (or second if just on the soundtrack)
She realizes the dam must fall and gets the rock things to do it for her (raises so many questions) claiming Arendelle was evacuated so the people will be safe. You know except the harsh northern winter is almost on you and you just destroyed their shelter, food and supplies. But hey I bet only 90% of them will die slow miserable deaths in the cold. You're gonna be a great queen!
However before the wave destroys the city Elsa arrives to block the wave. And this point I almost stood up n and yelled "Oh come on! Show some f$%&king balls!"
So Arendelle is saved. Olaf is back. Anna is queen. And Elsa finally succeeds in running away like she tried in the first movie. Only now she gets to be the whitest of white girls that saves the native people and now presumably rules them (great message Disney!)
But who needs all that pesky responsibility when you can ride a magic horse?
"Ok Ryder im gonna go play while you suckers do the work. And so help me if my dinner isn't ready by 6 sharp I'll put your testicles in such a deep freeze your grandkids will be born shivering"
So if you can't tell I found this movie disappointing. It wasn't terrible. There was effort put into it. The music is great and when they focused on Elsa's journey there was a good story there.
But the whole thing reeks of studio interference. Olaf is a pain in the ass. Anna is there to just be supportive and Kristoff is basically useless.
Then there was the man plot. So Elsa's grandfather kills the Northaldra leader which starts a battle where he is killed and presumably many other Arendelle and Northaldra people. Yet the spirts, who are never clearly defined, punish the forest and give Elsa powers so she can sacrifice herself and her kingdom to free the forest? All the while while nearly killing her along the way.
This movie needed added run time to fit the story and characters in. Then let it grow up a little with the audience. Hopefully if there are future frozen projects Disney treats the fans intelligence with a little more respect.
But that's just my take. If you liked the movie you're more then welcome to be wrong. Just kidding if you liked it more power to you. And now its time for me to put the filter back in. Hope you didn't mind a slightly edgier side.
On the plus side this Trailer for the live action Mulan looks awesome. Time to check this out.
