Chapter 98
.
Senator Chiles had given Will Macovoy documents he had stolen. Will was investigating them, trying to verify their authenticity. It was as he waited that Chiles found an unexpected visitor in his apartment. It was another man who called himself Will, but now he preferred to be called by his former name Wilhelm. Wilhelm was young, organizing student groups against alien refugees, he was also Chiles' brother.
.
Chiles; Wilhelm, is that you?
Wilhelm: It's me brother.
Chiles: I feared they would never awaken you.
Wilhelm: Because you betrayed us.
Chiles; What are you talking about?
Wilhelm: Don't try and lie to me. We know that you talked to that american journalist. Our courts have already found you guilty and pronounced sentance.
Chiles; These courts never were sticklers for reasonabe doubt.
Wilhelm: That would be a waste of time. Tell me why did you betray everything we stood for.
Chiles: Because I no longer elieved in that garbage. That crap we were taught in the Hitler Youth, even Baldur Von Shirach repented later.
Wilhelm: Yes, to save his own worthless life. I'll admit, mistakes were made. The fuhrer should have allied with America against the Soviet Union, we could have wiped out the communists and the jews together. But Hitler was just too irrational, Hess saw what needed to be done. Had Hitler listened, the jews, gypsies, homosexuals, they'd have been wiped out long ago.
Chiles: I can not be a part of genocide.
Wilhelm: You always were weak. Even when we were children, I had to force you to join our youth group. But I saw you change, you came to believe in our cause. And yet, they chose you for this assignment before me. They saw potential in you.
Chiles: And to my eternal shame I lived up to their expectations. But I saw the light, and so can you. We can go to the press together, help save millions of innocent lives.
Wilhelm: You mean weak and parasitic lives. Did you tell them about me?
Chiles: No, I couldn't turn you in.
Wilhelm: Still weak.
Chiles: I prefer to be called compassionate.
Wilhelm: You would.
Chiles; It's not too late for you to change.
Wilhelm: I refuse to change.
.
Wilhelm took his gun and murdered his own brother. Before he died, Chiles knew that his murder might convince Will Macovoy that the conspiracy was real. At least his death might do the world some small bit of good.
