Adrenaline.

That's what Sakura was running on right now as her trembling fingers gripped the cellphone in her hand tighter. Only three buttons stood between her and safety. Just three measly buttons; at least, that's what she was hoping for. Her fingers slowly pressed them down, one by one, as a single tear ran down her cheek.

9-1-1...

Ring. Ring. Ring.

Holding her breath; she waited impatiently for someone to answer. It took not one, not two, but three seconds before someone finally picks up the receiver and she hears the loud click as the person on the other end finally picked up.

"9-1-1, what is your emergency."

"There's someone trying to break into my house!" Sakura was trembling as the loud and distinct sounds of glass shattering made her jump and she quickly placed her free hand over her mouth to muffle a startled gasp that threatened to give away her position to the unknown intruder.

"Alright ma'am. What is your name?"

The pink-haired woman swallows as the sound of several pairs of footsteps make their presence known in the background. "My name is S-Sakura Uchiha."

"What is the location of your emergency?"

"I... I live on 162 West Street." She glanced around her bedroom as she waited for a response before finding what she was looking for. With the silent stealth of a wild cat, Sakura grabbed the small object before making her way quickly over to the attached bathroom. She shut and locked the door behind her then slowly slide to the cold tiled floor; resting her back against the door as if she was trying to hold off anyone who might try and enter her safe haven. Sounds continued from the floor below her and she clinched her eyes tightly shut as she fought to keep her growing anxiety at bay.

"Alright then ma'am, you said that someone was breaking into your house; is that correct?"

"Yes. I think they just broke through one of the windows because I heard glass breaking and now, I can hear them moving around downstairs."

"Okay, just stay on the line with me. I'm sending someone your way now."

"Thank you so much." The sounds of someone rummaging continued as did the muffled steps as the intruders continued in their assault on her home. She wasn't exactly sure how many there were but assumed that it was at least two based on what she was hearing. Her eyes locked on the small object in her hand and she felt her heart begin to pound harder; her grip on it tightening. 'Will I have to use this? Will I be able to?'

"Are you at your home alone or is there someone else inside with you; apart from the burglars?"

"Yes, I was alone. My husband is at work and it's just the two of us that live here."

"Alright, just hang on for me okay. We have two officers in route as we speak; they should be there shortly. Can you tell me where the intruders are ma'am?"

"I... I'm not sure. I'm locked in my bathroom but it sounds like they could be in the kitchen on the first floor." She let her head fall gently backwards as she closed her eyes once again as she tried to envision the layout of their home in her mind; to figure out where they could be. She assumed she was correct when she heard a drawer clatter to the ground followed by the sounds of metal utensils being scattering across their hardwood floors.

"You said they? Do you know how many there are ma'am?"

"I think... it sounds like just two, but I'm not sure." Suddenly a sound more terrifying than she ever thought possible happened. She could hear the sounds of creaking as someone ascended their staircase. 'Damn it! I guess it's a good thing Sasuke didn't fix that stupid step yet after all...'

She waited a beat; ears straining as she tried to hear which direction the intrude was headed and luckily for her, it sounded as if he, or she, was going the opposite direction to one of their spare bedrooms. Gripping the metal within her hand she held the phone to her ear with her shoulder and inspected its contents. 'Good; fully loaded... I hope and pray that I don't have to use this...'

"Ma'am, are you still there?"

"Y-yes...," her voice was slightly muffled as she slowly clicked the safety mechanism on the small handheld pistol that her husband had gotten her last year for her birthday.

...flashback...

"You need to know how to use this," her husband insisted as he thrust the small metal object into her outstretched hands.

"But Sasuke...," she began to protest but quickly silenced herself when she saw the dark look that cross his handsome features. The man took a large step towards her and grasped the back of her neck gently; holding her close to him while she stared up at him with widened eyes.

"No buts Sakura," his voice was stern, almost cold, but his gaze had softened. "What if I'm not here? You need to know how to protect yourself."

"Is this," she asked as she lifted the gun in her hands slightly; indicating that was what she was referring to, "really necessary though?"

"Yes." Sasuke's tone gave no room for argument and Sakura sighed as she resigned herself to that fact. Even still, she did have a few concerns and couldn't help but voice some of them aloud.

"Sasuke... I've never shot a gun in my life..."

"That's why I'm going to teach you." He gave her a quick kiss before taking the gun and placing it back in the box he had retrieved it from before pulling her into a warm embrace. "Tomorrow morning," he spoke against her ear as he leaned down and pressed his cheek against the side of her head. "We are going to the training grounds."

Sakura put her arms around him and nestled into the comfort of his arms. "Alright..."

...end of flashback...

Sakura was startled from her thoughts by one of the intruders; the one who had begun to make his way back down the hallway and towards her.

Step.

Step.

Step.

"Ma'am, can you hear me? What's going on?"

"H-he's... upstairs with me...," she whispered as she leaned against the door further; pushing as much of her body weight as she could against the only barrier that stood between them.

"I can't hear you ma'am. You need to speak up."

Step.

Step.

Step.

"I... can't," Sakura hissed as she heard the steps coming closer; her heart was pounding as her knuckles turned white around the death grip she had on her gun. "He...h-he's in my bedroom..."

"Did you say he's in your bedroom?"

"Y-yes..."

Sakura's racing heart was about to leap out of her throat and her stomach twisted as nausea began to settle into her belly. The sounds of his footsteps approaching her, ever so slowly, made her absolutely terrified. She clutched the gun and phone tightly; in the hopes that somehow this would make the whole situation, less real... but the sound of the bathroom door knob shaking, proved to her that this was no mere nightmare.

Shake. Rattle. Shake.

'Pant. Huff. Pant.'

Pound. Bang. Pound.

"I know you're in there! Open this damn door!" The violent rattling continued and tears began to slowly stream down the sides of her pale cheeks as she pressed her back as tightly against the door as she possibly could; stretching her legs out and in front of her in a feeble attempt to find purchase against the countertop across from her but she was just shy of reaching it. She thought of her husband, of her family, of his family, of her friends and coworkers... 'Will I make it out of this thing alive? Will I ever get to see them again...' A second voice on the other side of the door filled her with dread.

"What in the hell do you think you're doing man," the newcomer grumbled, though the sound of his voice was slightly muffled due to the door that stood between them.

"She's in here. I can hear that bitch; she's talking to someone. We can't have any live witnesses. I won't go back to jail."

"Come on, she hasn't even seen us yet. Let's just grab a few more things and get out of here while we still can!"

"No. I won't let there be any witnesses. I won't let her live." His tone was gravely and dark; sending cold shivers racing down Sakura's spine.

"I'm not getting involved. You do what you got to do man, but I didn't sign up for that shit. I'm out." As soon as one pair of footsteps moved away; the pounding continued. 'How did he know I was in here? Does he know who I am or is this just a coincidence...'

"I said open this damn door you stupid bitch! I'm going to fucking kill you!" He must be nuts if he thinks that threat will cause her to open the door; who in their right mind would, knowing that would be their fate.

"P-please... hurry!" Sakura cried into the phone; forgoing her attempts to remain as silent as possible when the sounds of the wooden door splintering from the pressure of the man on the other side started behind her.

Crack.

Snap.

Splinter.

"Ma'am, the police officers are right around the corner from your house. What's happening?"

"He's breaking down the bathroom door!" Sakura quickly shuffled across the tiled floor; switching her position so that she could face the man head on as soon as he entered. She lowered the phone to the ground, though she continued to hear the 9-1-1 operator speaking but she ignored it as she cocked the small gun and readied it; just like her husband had taught her. She then brought the firearm up with slightly shaky hands and took a slow, measured breath; waiting.

...flashback...

"It's okay to shoot them Sakura," he said as he caressed her cheek gently; pulling her head up so that she was forced to look him in the eyes. "The law around here states that if someone breaks into your home you have a right to defend yourself. You can't hesitate though. Seconds could mean life or death in a situation like that. Remember to aim well."

...end of flashback...

As the final pieces of their bathroom door began to fall in and the dark, sadistic face of a large male figure peered at her through the broken slats of wood; a glint of silver shining brightly as he lifted his hand towards her, (his own weapon pointed directly at her) she had lifted her weapon up and in front of her face within seconds and without thinking twice, she pulled the trigger.

BANG!

Only a single shot was fired, seconds before the cops swarmed and entered her home. The first person she saw after the ordeal was her brother-in-law who immediately scooped her small frame up and into his strong arms before carrying her out of the house and into the darkness of the night.

He carried her past the broken pieces of wood that were scattered across the floor...

...past the body that was lying only feet away from where it all happened...

...the body that was lying completely motionless on the ground. His cold dead eyes staring up at the ceiling; unblinking.

Later, the would-be robber was pronounced dead on the scene.

The single bullet she had fired, pierced directly through the center of his heart.

Sakura was shaking as Itachi wrapped his jacket around her shoulders; but she was able to give the man a soft smile as a thank you; which he responded to with a simple nodded. "Are you alright, Sakura?" His tone was full of concern as he stepped closer to her; shielding her view of the house with his tall frame.

She continued to stare ahead but respond with a whispered reply. "I-I think I will be..."

"You were very brave tonight you know."

"N-not really." Itachi gave her a quirked smile as he placed his hand on her shoulder and squeezed it reassuringly. She appreciated the gesture and returns his smile the best that she could.

"Sasuke's on his way. He was out on another call when we got the one about you being in trouble." Just as the last words left his lips, another cop car came barreling down the street; it's bright lights flashing and the siren wailing.

Sakura felt her heart leap into her throat as her husband quickly jumped from the driver's side as soon as the vehicle came to a complete stop; followed quickly by his partner. The pinkette was quickly enveloped in a strong, tight entrance and melted against him as he held her close; she could hear his heart pounding loudly as her ear pressed against his chest. "Sakura, I... I was so fucking worried about you. When I heard what happened...," his deep voice was muffled by her hair as he pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her scalp. Sakura wrapped her arms around him and held him close; her nose taking in his familiar scent and she felt comforted in every way by this strong man.

When someone cleared their throat loudly; the young couple pulled away slightly to see a lanky looking officer standing next to them. "I checked the house. We could only find one male suspect but the operator said that you informed them of two?"

Sakura nodded her head in the affirmative. "Yes. I could hear them arguing upstairs. I'm not sure what happened to the other one. He must have run off before you got here."

"Don't worry," the officer said, giving her a gentle smile. "We will find him. It seems like they broke out of jail just a few days ago and have been on the run since. Sasuke, you're one of the officers who originally arrested the deceased one and we think that maybe he could have been targeting you from the very beginning. Possibly waiting for you to leave for work before attempting to make his move." Sasuke nodded; understandingly.

"Thank you." The man gave Sakura a reassuring smile once more before quickly walking away; leaving the couple alone once more. Sasuke grasped her chin between his hands gently and pulled her face up so that he could inspect her for any sign of injury.

"I'm fine dear. They didn't touch me." She placed her palms on top of his and looked up at him; meeting his dark gaze with a silent plea. "I... I did what you said. I didn't hesitate... even though I was scared out of my wits," she tried to ease the tension with slight humor and released a nervous chuckle as she squeezed his hands.

Sasuke released her and brushed away a few stray tears that clung to her skin with his thumbs before giving her a warm, gentle smile; one that softened his harsh features. "That's my girl."
