Dany had not managed to kill Clogg, but she had driven him and his crew off for now. They had retreated back to their ship. All the pirates that had tried to enter Marshank through the tunnel had been killed by the dragons, except for the rat named Wulpp. Dany was interrogating him now, in Badrang's old office.

"Please don't kill me!" Wulpp begged.

Dany's voice was gentle. "I'm not planning to. I just need you to tell me something. Do you know what connection Captain Clogg has with Ser Jorah Mormont?"

Wulpp relaxed a bit. "Yeah. Back when Jorah lived in Westeros, he caught some poachers fishing on his family's island. Instead of turning them in to the king, he tried to sell them to Clogg, to work as galley slaves on the Seascarab. But Mormont got caught, and was banished."

"And is that the only contact he had with Clogg?"

Wulpp nodded. "Except for when he used Clogg to send those messages."

Across the room, Jorah winced. "What messages?" Dany demanded.

"I don't know what they were about, but Jorah sent a bunch of letters to Clogg, and we had to deliver them to some guy in Westeros named Varys the Spider."

"WHAT?" Dany yelled.

Jorah's neck was red with shame. "Hold on…"

Dany rounded on him. "Don't tell me to hold on! You've been spying on me and selling me to my enemies!"

"For a time." He said it grudgingly. "I stopped."

"When? When did you stop?"

"After your dragons were born."

Dany's expression was a mixture of anger and sadness. "I thought you were my friend."

"I am! I've always protected you."

"Yeah, from everyone except yourself!"

"It was me who stopped you from drinking that poisoned wine."

"And how did you know it was poisoned?" Dany's eyes were blazing. "You must have been in on the plot!"

"Daenerys, I love you!" Jorah protested.

"You sure have a funny way of showing it," Dany sneered. "You are dismissed from my service."

"No." He reached for her. "Daenerys, please, hear me…"

She slapped his hand away. "Do not ever presume to touch me again, or to speak my name. Get out of this fortress at once, and be grateful you're leaving with your life."

She couldn't sleep that night. She tossed and turned in her bed.

In the morning, Rose came into her room. "Is there anything I can do for you?"

Dany took the mousemaid's paw in her hand. "Never lie to me, Rose. Never betray me."

"I never will," Rose promised.

That day, Dany had a meeting with Martin and Ser Barristan. "So, when are we going to Westeros?" Martin asked.

"We can't leave yet," Dany explained. "We still don't have a ship to travel on. And then there are all those that can't go with us, the old uns and babes that can't fight. What are we to do with them? We can't leave them behind, or Clogg or some other pirate will snatch them up." Dany got up from her chair and went to gaze out the office window over the courtyard below. "My dragons need time to grow and test their wings, and I need the same. I will not let anybeast chain up those I've freed all over again." She turned back to look at Martin and Ser Barristan. "I will not march."

"What will you do then, your grace?" Barristan asked.

"Stay," she said. "Rule. And be a queen."

Jorah was wandering south along the shore. Marshank was getting farther and farther away in the distance behind him.

Suddenly, two rats from Clogg's crew, Bluddnose and Crableg, jumped at him from behind a boulder and grabbed his arms. "You're coming with us," they said.

They brought him to the Seascarab, where Clogg was waiting with what remained of his crew. "I've got big plans for you, bucko," Clogg said to Jorah. "I'm delivering you to the queen."

"You're bringing me back to Daenerys?" Jorah said.

Clogg shook his head. "No. Different queen."

"Are you taking me to Queen Cersei back in Westeros?" Jorah asked, not knowing she was dead.

"Not her either," said Clogg.
