Chapter Fifty-Two

The walk back to the New Trollmarket entrance was quiet and tense, broken only by the occasional small, guilty sniffle made by the little magic plant lady walking along with them at Douxie's side. Though the admission of her previous actions within the Arcane Order were frustrating and infuriating, Jim could not bring himself to be angry at her; it was beyond clear that she regretted her actions, and that she was trying her best to make up for them. Jim could tell the others felt the same way, but nothing could console Nari, and she continued to silently cry as they walked.

"Well," Krel heaved a darkly amused sigh, breaking the tense silence. "I am pleased how well Akiridion tech and magic melded together."

"Yes," Douxie added, his voice cracking in a relieved tone. "We'll have to plan some other projects together, Krel. This was fun."

"I am rather unsatisfied with the lack of justice," Merlin grumbled, trailing slightly behind them as he sulked in one of his moods again.

"Yeah," Claire said sarcastically, rolling her eyes and giving Merlin an impatient glare. "Because you're all about justice and doing the right thing."

To his credit, the old man seemed to blush a little, looking down at his feet. "Oh, hush."

Jim laughed, shaking his head. "I'm just glad this danger is put to rest."

"Now, we just gotta clean out his cavern of death," Toby said with a gag, his face turning a slightly green. "Not it, by the way."

"I think we could just toss up a solid magical barrier, and then set it on fire," Archie mused, perched on Douxie's shoulder and licking obsessively at the bald patch in his tail. "Some blue bell flames ought to do the trick, eh, Doux?"

"Sounds good," Douxie agreed, nodding and reaching up to gently scratch the dragon-cat behind one of his ears. Archie purred and leaned into the touch unconsciously. "Blue bell flames burn hot, but are easily contained. Remember that nest of Shadow Mephits we took out with blue bell flames last month, Nari?"

Nari sniffled, but looked up at Douxie and gave him a shaky smile. "Yes. That was a big nest, too."

"Hm," Merlin hummed in a thoughtful and slightly suspicious sounding tone. "This influx of Shadow Mephits is unsettling. A side effect of the Draknagoth growing in power, perhaps?"

Nari let out a wail of despair and everyone turned to glare at the old wizard, who seemed utterly unfazed by his faux pas.

"Way to go, Merl," Toby said, rolling his eyes, and then reaching over to gently pat Nari on the head, between her branch-like horns. "Don't worry about it, Nar; we don't blame you. I mean, we've all made bad choices before, right? This one Halloween, I accidentally left my bag of chocolates out and—"

Before Toby could continue with his tale of feline woe, there was a deep rumbling sound that shook the Earth beneath their feet, and they stumbled and cried out in surprise as the vibrations threw them all off balance.

"Wha— what the hell was that?" Claire gasped, gripping Jim's upper arms tightly as he had caught her before she could hit the ground. He could feel her heart pounding from where her chest was pressed to his.

"An earthquake?" Jim wondered, looking around at their darkened surroundings. The ground was still again, and the air was silent, not even the sounds of the night bugs chirping to echo around them. "Are they common in New Jersey?"

"Not as common as in California," Douxie said, also looking around with a wary expression. "But that was definitely not an earthquake. It was more like… an explosion, maybe?"

"Hm…" Nari sniffled, leaning down down to press her palm to the ground. Green tendrils of magic light spread out across the ground, branching off in all directions. She closed her eyes in concentration for a few seconds, and then opened them again, her expression confused. "All is safe… there was no sudden loss of life."

"Well, that's a relief," Douxie sighed, his shoulders slumping as he relaxed. Jim felt a little of the tension leave the air around them, though Claire still clung to him, her heart continuing to pound. He could feel a suppressed swell of anxiousness coming from her, across their bond, and it made his own heart quicken with confused panic.

"What is it?" Jim whispered into his mate's ear, tightening his grip around her waist protectively. "What do you sense?"

"I…" Claire spoke softly, her gaze distant as she stared out into the darkness. "It's faint, but… there's… a strange aura." She shook her head, looking back up at Jim with a slight tremble in her shoulders. "Let's hurry and get home."

Jim nodded, bending slightly so that Claire could climb up on his back, which she did immediately, and then he turned back to the others. "We're going to go on ahead. Will you—"

"We will catch up shortly," Merlin assured him, nodding his head to indicate for Jim to go. "We will do a quick perimeter search."

"Right," Jim nodded, and then he took off, his wife clinging tightly to his back, her legs gripped around his waist in a way that would normally incite his arousal. Claire's unfocused and confused panic, however, only made him run faster, pushing himself so hard that his legs ached with the force. At a walk, they had covered the distance in about 45 minutes; had he been running casually, it would have likely taken them 25 or so minutes to cross the forest; as it was, with their combined emotions pushing him beyond his limits, they reached the cavern entrance to New Trollmarket in just over 5 minutes. As they came around a large, ancient oak that half-obscured the entrance, Jim stumbled to a halt, gasping both for breath and in shock at the scene before them.

"Zadra!" Claire gasped, throwing herself off of Jim's back as he loosened his grasp on her. She ran over to the two fallen Akiridions, while he braced his arm against the tree, panting heavily as he tried to catch his breath. "Vex! Oh, God! What—"

"They're alive," Jim panted, pushing himself away from the tree, once he'd managed to calm the fire in his lungs and the ache in his legs, and moving to kneel by his mate's side. He grasped Vex by the shoulders and grunted as he turned the gigantic alien over onto his back. Both interplanetary beings were still glowing with energy, though it was significantly duller than usual. He gestured to the dim, pulsing light that shone slightly through the large man's armor; unlike Krel and Aja, Vex's and Zadra's life cores were smartly hidden, though their pulsing glow was still visible and unmistakable. "There, see? Their life cores are intact — they're just unconscious."

"What in the world could have knocked them both out like this?" Claire asked in astonishment as she turned Zadra over as well and took in the sight of her own pulsing life core with a slight sigh of relief.

"Magic…" Jim murmured, closing his eyes in concentration as he reached out with his own senses.

"Yes, but… it's twisted, or… I don't know…" Claire agreed, and Jim opened his eyes to watch her gently press a subtly glowing hand to Zadra's chest. "It's that aura again. It doesn't seem… organic?"

Zadra groaned in Claire's arms, stirring awake as her magic brought the Akiridion lieutenant out of whatever strange magic had put her under. The glowing woman blinked tiredly, still seemingly unable to snap completely out of the magically induced sleep. Under normal circumstances, Jim knew that Zadra would have reacted immediately in violent defense, before she even knew who was around her. Instead, she struggled to lift her arm, her hand hanging limp at the end, though she had one long finger stretched out in the direction of the cavern entrance. "M-M-Mor-Moran…do…"

"What?" Jim asked, frowning in confusion. "What is that?"

"I don't know," Claire shrugged, her voice lilted in a high tone as her panic increased. "…but it definitely can't be good."

"Go," Zadra gasped suddenly, a sudden, desperate strength surging through her as she reached up to grasp Claire's arm tightly. "In-inside. They're… inside."

"Stay here," Jim commanded as he stood, his armor summoning itself without thought, but Claire gently laid Zadra back to the ground, and sprung to her feet.

"No," she said, her voice so high, she was almost screaming. Not waiting for his response, she ran ahead, calling back, "Come on!"

Jim growled in frustration, but rushed after his wife, grabbing her around the waist and throwing her onto his back as gently as he could while still running. "Fine, but keep your guard up and don't put yourself in direct danger. Let me do the fighting!"

Claire scoffed, and Jim could practically feel her rolling her eyes. "I am not helpless!" Jim growled again and opened his mouth to argue, but Claire spoke over him, her tone slightly resigned. "But I promise to be cautious, okay?"

"Thank you," Jim sighed in relief, which was fairly short lived when he turned the corner that opened up into the New Trollmarket Center. "Oh, Deya…"

All around them, trolls were laid out across the floor, benches, and entryways of establishments. A few of them were even still weakly grasping fallen makeshift weapons, like they had been on their way to defend against an unexpected enemy and had grabbed whatever was at hand. Blinky was passed out in the entryway to his library, a frying pan, a snow globe, and 2 books scattered about him, no doubt his weapons of choice. Jim would have stopped, but he knew none of the trolls were dead or injured — most were even starting to stir, groaning and shifting about as the magic that had put them under slowly dissipated on its own.

"The magic is fading," Claire said, also noticing the waking trolls. "Where are—"

"Further out," Jim replied, tightening his grip on his mate's thighs. "Whoever they are, they just passed through here; they didn't fight or even break anything."

"But…" Claire's voice panted in panic. "We… we're the only ones that live that far out."

"We have to hurry," Jim said, picking his pace up again, running as fast as he could, only slowing slightly when they came upon the narrower and rockier path that led up to their own cave. It was eerily silent throughout the caverns, not even the cave crickets chirping their rhythmic music in the darkness, and Jim's heart pounded harder and harder, the closer that they got to their home.

"Enrique!" Claire gasped when the entrance to their cave came into view. The little Changeling that was her adopted brother was passed out over a large rock to the left of their doorway, which was ripped from its hinges and hanging askew to the side. "Oh, my God…"

"Ellie!" Jim gasped, slowing just enough for his mate to jump from his back. They both rushed inside, ignoring NotEnrique when they noticed him stirring, like the others had. Inside, it was immediately clear that, here, at least, there had been a struggle. Darci was unconscious on the floor, but hers was via a more violent manner. A large bleeding gash was above her left eyebrow, one of her hands still reflexively holding onto a bent dagger that had once decorated one of the shelves carved into the living room wall. Her palm was bleeding, where the dagger had slid back when she'd obviously stabbed it against something hard, like stone… or troll skin. The rooms were trashed, books, clothes, pictures, and various objects and trinkets all strewn about.

"Darci?!" Claire called out, rushing over to her best friend's side and shaking her by the shoulder. "Darci, wake up! Darci!"

"Oooh…" Darci groaned as Claire's insistent prodding finally roused her. "My head…"

"What happened?" Claire demanded, helping Darci sit up and lifting a glowing hand to heal the gash on the injured girl's forehead.

Jim ignored them, sniffing the air, his panic building as he recognized two of the three scents lingering around them. The scents were starting to fade, already at least 10 minutes gone. Despite his nose already telling him the horrible truth, Jim darted from room to room, tearing back blankets, toys, and furniture in a desperate search for his baby. He looked in every nook and cranny he could think of, anywhere that Darci would have hidden the infant, but despite his search, and despite her scent being permeated throughout their home, her living scent was fading along with the others.

"Darci, where is Ellie?!" Jim demanded, coming back into the living room and grabbing Darci by the shoulders. Claire had helped her to her feet and was healing the cut on her hand. "Where is our baby?!"

"I…" Darci still looked dazed, her pupils blown wide, and Jim suspected that — despite her cut having been healed — she might have a mild concussion, as well. She lifted the hand that Claire wasn't healing and pressed her palm to her head, her eyes squeezing shut. "I… I don't… she was…"

"Darce?" Claire asked, trepidation in her voice, her eyes wide in horror. "P-please… Darci, please try to remember…"

"In… the crib…" Darci mumbled, shaking her head slowly. "I… put her in her crib… in her room…"

"She's not there," Jim said, his voice shaking, his hands tightening anxiously on Darci's shoulders.

"M-maybe, maybe…" Claire started, her expression and voice desperate as she finished healing Darci's hand. "Maybe she took herself out of Time?"

Jim shook his head, his throat tightening in emotion. "She had that sealing bracelet on, remember? She couldn't use her magic."

"Then, where is she?" Claire demanded, her voice shrill as her eyes started glistening with tears. She grabbed Darci's newly healed hand, tugging her closer. "Darci, where is she?! Tell me where my baby is!"

"I…" Darci shook her head again, looking startled and confused, her own tears beginning to build up. "I'm sorry… there were… trolls, and… someone else."

"Who?" Jim demanded, resisting the urge to shake Darci again. He was frustrated and beyond worried, but he also worried that Darci would have to go to the hospital if Claire's magic wasn't enough to cure her concussion. "I smell Usurna and Kalen, but I don't recognize the other scent… there's a dark magic twisted around whoever it is."

"Usurna?!" Claire gasped in shock, dropping Darci's hand from hers and staring at Jim in horror. "And… Kalen?"

"The bastard," Jim growled, his scruff rising on the back of his neck as his temper rose. "I should have known that he would go to her, that rotten—"

"It would appear that our intruders are long gone," Merlin's voice came from the entryway, and Jim turned to see him, Douxie, Nari, and Toby coming inside. Toby noticed his girlfriend's dazed expression and immediately rushed to her side, fussing over her like a mother hen. "Not without causing quite the ruckus, however. A quick, but very powerful sleeping spell took down everyone."

"Ellie's gone," Claire exclaimed, falling to her knees and hugging her arms around herself tightly. Jim rushed to her side, letting his armor dissipate as he took his mate into his arms. "They took her!"

"What?" Douxie gasped, looking around as if he just noticed the utter chaos the state of Jim's and Claire's home was in. "Bloody hell, what happened…?"

"It was Morando," another familiar voice said from behind the others, in a breathless tone. Merlin, Douxie, and Nari parted to give room to the three Akiridions entering behind them. Krel was in his native form again, and he was hovering behind Zadra worriedly, despite the fact that both her and Vex looked like they had gotten over the magic that had knocked them out.

"What's a Morando?" Jim demanded, surpassing the urge to growl and bare his teeth in anger and frustration.

"Morando is a who, not a what," Krel explained in a grim voice, a slight tremble in the back of his throat. "General Morando. The former commander of the Taylon Phalanx and traitor to Akiridion-5. He's the one that deposed my family and took over our planet. He's why we had to flee our home."

"What would he be doing with the trolls?" Douxie asked with a frown. "And what would they want with Ellie?"

"Her power," Nari said simply, worrying her hands fretfully. "She is a very powerful sorceress, almost on par with one of the Arcane Order. Even we, The Firsts, have no control over Time. I was very surprised to learn of her abilities."

Jim and Claire looked at each other in horror, and then turned back to Nari. "But… she has no control over her magic; what will they do to her?!"

Nari bit her lip anxiously, an unsure expression contorting her features. "That magic… do you sense it? The Draknagoth was here, too… and it has a significant strength to it."

"What?" Toby gasped in a shrill voice, his eyes widening in panic. "No, no, no… we - it… you changed the future, right? It's not supposed to become stronger."

"Well, we did change the future by preventing it from possessing Sarah," Merlin said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "But if it's possessed Usurna or this Morando fellow… I don't know if that makes things better or worse."

"Oh, my God…" Claire moaned, burying her face into Jim's chest, her shoulders trembling with sobs. "What are they gonna do to her?"

"They can do nothing," Nari said in a reassuring voice. "My spell is not so easily broken by any common magic user."

"You mean the sealing bracelet that you put on her?" Jim asked, though he didn't know what other spell Nari could be referring to.

Nari nodded her head, opening her mouth to respond, but before she could say anything, there was a thundering sound from outside the entrance, and then Gleb, of all beings, stumbled in, pushing everyone aside angrily. Even more surprising was the sight of little NotEnrique clinging to Gleb's left horn, biting it and cursing aggressively.

"Trollhunter!" Gleb said, his voice aggravated and panicked, baring his teeth as he growled. "Let go, Impure! Trollhunter! I—"

Jim leapt to his feet and rushed forward to grab Gleb by his right horn and slamming the troll down to the floor, trusting that his little brother-in-law would get himself out of the way, which he did, bouncing off of Gleb and darting over to his sister's side.

"You bastard," Jim snarled, wrenching Gleb's head to the side, by his horn. "You knew, didn't you? You knew they were coming here!"

"No!" Gleb protested, surprisingly not fighting back, despite the sneer on his face and growl in his voice. "I… he didn't say nothin' about Usurna. He said he just wanted to cause some mischief! I… he didn't say nothin' about taking my Ani!"

"Ani?" Jim questioned, reluctantly letting Gleb go and sitting back. Gleb sat up too, rubbing the back of his neck. "What do you mean?"

"My Ani!" Gleb insisted, snarling. "He's gone! Kalen's stench was all over the place, when we came to, but Ani was gone! He took my son!"

"They took Ellie, too," Claire sobbed, grabbing her little brother up like a teddy bear and hugging him close to her chest, her face buried in his scruff as she cried. NotEnrique huffed uncomfortably from being held so tightly, but patted his sister's arm reassuringly.

"What?" Gleb asked in genuine surprise. "What in the world would they want with that mixed-blood, little—" Jim growled threateningly and, luckily, Gleb shut his mouth, looking abashed.

"Does this Ani know Ellie?" Douxie asked with a thoughtful expression on his face. "Would he know what her needs are? How to care for her?"

"I…" Jim frowned, biting his lip in thought. "I guess so, yes… in a limited capacity."

"And would this Kalen be aware that Ani would know how to care for the baby?" Douxie went on, turning to Gleb. "I'm guessing from Jim's accusation that you and Kalen are friends?"

Gleb's expression became uncomfortable, and he looked to the floor, avoiding everyone's gazes. "We were… he was my best friend. He… was cast out of the pack by the Elders a few months ago. We'd still been communicating, though… but I had no idea he was with Usurna, I swear!" Gleb hurried to add, giving Jim an earnest and honest look. "I know I've made mistakes, and my prejudices are deep set, but I swear, I would never willingly side with Usurna and her ilk!"

"But you still shared information with Kalen?" Merlin questioned, his expression shrewd.

"It was more like griping," Gleb admitted, pouting. "I… I never thought he'd take my complaints and give them as information to Usurna. He never said nothin' about bein' in contact with her, or nothin'!"

"But you knew he was coming here?" Toby demanded, glaring down the troll that was 5 times his size in fury.

"He… he only said he was gonna cause some mischief… set a Helheeti loose, or toss a couple of Dwärkstones around, that's all!" Gleb insisted.

"Has he said anything to you about where he's been?" Jim asked, trying to figure out any clue that might lead him to his child. "Where has he been staying? Where were you meeting him?"

"Not close," Gleb replied, shaking his head. "We'd been communicating by Scrying Crystals."

"Scrying Crystals?" Krel repeated, frowning in confusion. "What are those?"

"Incredibly rare magical objects," Douxie explained, crossing his arms over his chest and also glaring at Gleb. "They used to be fairly common, back when wizards were out in the open. Over the centuries, various anti-magic campaigns have resulted in their wide-spread destruction. I haven't seen one since the late 1600s — where did you get them?"

"They…" Gleb sighed, shaking his head while avoiding everyone's gazes again. "A week after Kalen was exiled, the Elders allowed me to meet up with him on the outskirts of the southern portion of the forest, to bring the rest of his belongings to him. He… had 'em; gave one to me, so that we could stay in touch. He has the other… he never said where he was, but…" Gleb looked up, a thoughtful spark in his amber eyes. "I did notice, when we were Scrying… the weather was different; the last time we were talking, 'twas clear here, the leaves just starting to change colors, but on his end, there was a thick snow everywhere, but no trees."

"So, somewhere further up North," Douxie surmised, humming thoughtfully. "Go and fetch your Scrying Crystal."

"He won't answer," Gleb choked out, sobbing miserably. "I've already tried."

"We'll try again," Jim said in determination. "Go and get it."

Gleb sniffled pathetically, but nodded, shuffling to his feet, and then barreled out of the door again.

"Hah!" NotEnrique scoffed angrily, squirming in Claire's arms, but unable to pry himself loose. "You can't trust that bastard! I bet he was in on it!"

Jim shook his, letting out a deep, frustrated sigh. "If Ani weren't missing, too, I'd agree with you, but Gleb would never put his whelp in immediate danger like this, and even if I thought he would, I know Ani definitely wouldn't have gone along with it."

"Nari, are you absolutely sure that no one can break the seal that you placed on Eleanor's powers?" Merlin demanded, his expression more worried than Jim had ever seen it. "Not even the Draknagoth?"

Nari shook her, reaching over to take Douxie's hand again, which she seemed to do when she was nervous or upset. "No, the only ones who can remove it are her parents; even I cannot remove it, though I am the being who cast it. It is biologically linked to her parents only."

"But what if they hurt her, trying to get it off?" Claire fretted, tightening her arms around her little brother. NotEnrique grunted, bis eyes bugging out a little more than usual, which would have been amusing in any other situation.

"The charm has some measure of defense in it, as well," Nari assured the worried parents, but Jim's stomach still churned with nerves. Despite her words, Nari did not appear completely unconcerned.

"They'll kill her!" Claire cried, finally letting NotEnrique go in order to cover her face with her hands and start to sob, curling in on herself on the floor.

"No!" Jim snarled, rushing back to his mate's side and pulling her into his arms. "No, they won't. If they had any intentions of… of that, they wouldn't have bothered taking someone that they knew would be able to see to her needs. They want access to her power; hurting her in any way will prevent them from ever accessing her power. That's why they took Ani, too, right? To make sure she stayed safe and healthy."

"I am very concerned about Morando's involvement in this," Zadra said, punching her fist into her opposite palm in a very take charge gesture. "For him to have personally left Akiridion-5 suggests that our people are under a suppression extreme enough that he is not concerned of rebellion while he is away."

"And to suggest that he has bound himself to this dark magical being…" Vex muttered, shuttering in a fearful way that Jim had never seen the warrior exude. "This is not good."

"Yes," Zadra agreed, a deep frown on her face as she stroked her chin thoughtfully. "That is concerning, but also…" she turned toward Vex, and they shared a worried expression. "Are the legends true?"

Vex sighed, even his body glow dimming with his mood. "It would seem so. There's more going on here than just a war between trolls. All of the Universe is now at stake."

"What do you mean?" Krel demanded, looking between his Military Commander and Lieutenant. Zadra and Vex shared another look, and Jim recognized it as the look two adults usually shared when silently discussing whether or not to divulge information to a child. Krel recognized it, too, and straightened his back, glaring back at them. "I am your King, and I demand that you tell me what you know."

Zadra sighed, and then turned to face Krel and the others in the room. "Gaylen's Core is hidden somewhere on Earth. If Morando came here, it was — at least, initially — in an attempt to obtain it. If he gets that Life Core… he will declare himself Supreme Ruler of the Universe."

"Oh, great!" Toby laughed in a hysterical tone, rolling his eyes. "So… we're all gonna die — that's what you're saying?"

"Only if you resist," Zadra replied sarcastically. "He can't call himself ruler of anything, if he kills all of his subjects."

"Well, news to you, maybe, but Usurna, the Draknagoth, and the Arcane Order want to wipe out all humans," Douxie said angrily, letting Nari's hand go and crossing his arms over his chest. "So, yes, we will be massacred; especially with all of these evildoers joining forces."

"We won't side with Ursurna or Morando," Jim declared, gently pushing his wife back out of his embrace and standing to his feet to glare defiantly back at Zadra. "We will not give into subjugation."

"Hm," Krel hummed in a determined and defiant tone, and then he turned to give Zadra a hard glare. "I will fight to defend the humans."

This seemed to shock both Zadra and Vex, who started sputtering and arguing.

"No, my liege—!"

"Don't be so stupid—!"

"This is our chance to go home—!"

"We can take Akiridion-5 back—!"

"Stop!" Krel shouted, holding up a hand to stem the tide of arguments.

"Your sister, as the eldest and the Queen, has the final say," Zadra went on, ignoring Krel's command and speaking over him with a haughty look on her face, a slight smirk on her lips. "And she will agree that we should take this opportunity to take back Akiridion-5. With Morando occupied with the Trolls here, you can perfect your Worm Hole Transporter, and we can use it to go home. With the planet back under control—"

"If Aja wishes to go back to Akiridion-5, then she can," Krel interrupted, both his voice and expression hard. "But I will stay here, and—"

"My Liege—!"

"And," Krel raised his voice more, riding over Zadra's objections. "I had already decided that I will be staying on Earth. I belong here."

"Y-you be serious, Krel!" Vex stuttered, an astonished look on his face. "Now, I know that you have friends here, but—"

"Do you want to leave Nancy?" Krel asked Vex, a knowing look on his face. Vex stuttered again, his glow brightening considerably. Before anyone could break the award silence that followed, Gleb stumbled back in, a large crystal orb clutched in his hands that seemed to be swirling with dark storm clouds, sparks of lightning included.

"I - I have it," the large, green troll panted, passing the crystal over to Douxie, who had reached out for the object. "But Kalen won' answer!"

"Perhaps that's because it's not you they wish to speak to," Douxie said, waling over to Jim and handing him the crystal.

"What am I—?" Jim started, taking the crystal from his friend, but then gasping in surprise as the clouds within the globe began to clear as soon as he touched the crystal. Everyone rushed forward to gather around Jim, all of them trying to see the change happening within the crystal. The lightning dissipated, and the clouds lightened from dark and ominous to white and fluffy, almost innocent looking. Then, there was one, single strike of lightning within the globe and when the light cleared, Usurna was there, smiling her evil and smug smile.

"Well met, Trollhunter."
