You're probably wondering why I interrupted this story to show a Pokémon contest between Shauna and Miette, well you might get your answer at the end of the chapter. Also, this is an opportunity for some of Serena's rivals to interact with each other. Also, I might be hinting another ship in the making.
I will give out a happy spoiler for this chapter, both Shauna and Miette will get their fifth ribbon and the coveted entry ribbon to get into the Grand Festival. One of these two will just get their fifth ribbon now.
I did say I would write the interlude and gym battle at the same time, but this interlude just took over. Interlude would've came up sooner but lost a lot of time due to shoveling snow and overtime at work. Not to mention we got a huge cold-front coming in.
I do not own Pokémon!
Viridian City-Pokémon Center
A trio has come from Kalos to tour the Kanto Region consisting of two boys and a girl. They were Trevor Zynn, Tierno Jubalie, and Shauna Florry. Trevor and Tierno were collecting badges as they were going to compete in the Pokémon League while Shauna was competing in Pokémon Contests to get into the Grand Festival.
They were in Viridian City as they all hoped to add to their collection. Trevor and Tierno already have six badges and depending, if the gym were open, they would try to get their Earth Badge. They haven't gotten their Marsh Badge in Saffron City yet as they wait to get stronger.
But the real reason they were here was for Shauna as the next contest was slated to take place tomorrow. After watching Serena get her final ribbon, Shauna was now more than determined to earn her fifth ribbon too. They were now getting their Pokémon a check-up, and Nurse Joy came out with a smile on their face holding a set of Pokeballs.
"Good news Shauna, your Pokémon are fit to compete in tomorrow's contest," Nurse Joy commented, "And as for you Trevor and Tierno, your Pokémon are doing fine."
Despite the attack Team Rocket launched on the Pokémon Center a while back, the center was still running at full operation like nothing ever happened.
"Thank you Nurse Joy!" Shauna said beaming.
"Now I don't know if you've heard the news," Nurse Joy said suddenly.
"What news?" Shauna questioned.
"That tomorrow's contest will begin the contest circuit's final run in the Kanto Region for the year meaning there is only eight contests left including this one. That means you will have eight chances to win your final ribbon," Nurse Joy explained.
This was nothing to be surprised about. The Grand Festival was drawing close and most coordinators including Serena were probably getting ready for the big stage.
"I should've known," Shauna said as she gave a sigh.
"Don't worry Shauna, if you don't win this one, then you'll have seven more chances to dance your way to the Grand Festival. Like how me and Trevor are two badges away from dancing our way to the Pokémon League!" Tierno declared putting his hands on his hips.
"Come on Shauna, you've won some, you've lost some, and watching Serena get her fifth ribbon should fire you up. You want to join her in the Grand Festival, don't you?" Trevor asked.
"Well of course," Shauna answered as he pumped her fists, "And that is what got me all pumped up!"
Trevor then turned over to Nurse Joy. As long as they were here, they needed to hear the status on the Viridian Gym. They came through Viridian City already only to find the gym closed.
"Nurse Joy, when is the Viridian Gym set to re-open?" Trevor asked.
"You're in luck, according to what we've heard, the Viridian Gym is slated to open the day after tomorrow," Nurse Joy answered, "We've already got a few trainers here at the center waiting to get in."
Somewhere in another room, a familiar purple hair boy was sitting on his bed with his arms crossed and his eyes closed trying to clear his mind. Paul was in his room clearing his mind as he was awaiting his chance to get into the Viridian Gym.
Trevor and Tierno smiled at each other. This was amazing, the Viridian Gym was about to re-open for trainers. Especially since the Pokémon League was coming close.
"That's good news, now we can get our Earth Badges!" Tierno cheered as he spun around.
"Not until I get my fifth ribbon!" Shauna declared as she had her hands on her hips.
"You mean my fifth ribbon," a voice sneered.
The group turned around to see a girl with short blue hair wearing a blue headband, blue shirt with long sleeves along with a dark blue vest, an orange scarf, a light blue skirt, high white socks, and brown loafers.
It was Miette!
"Your fifth ribbon?" Shauna questioned as it came into realization, "Oh I see you're going to take part in tomorrow's contest."
"That's right, I'm going to get my fifth ribbon and get into the Grand Festival," Miette smirked.
"I don't think so, you see I'm going to get my fifth ribbon," Shauna sneered.
"Oh really…what's your name?" Miette asked.
"Shauna," Shauna answered.
"I'm Miette," Miette said introducing herself.
Trevor and Tierno smiled with their arms crossed. This was good to see. Shauna already has some competition for tomorrow. Maybe the competition should know each other.
"Well Miette, I have to win tomorrow. Because a friend of mine just got all of her ribbons and is qualified for the Grand Festival. I promised to be there to compete against her and I'm going to keep that promise," Shauna told Miette with determination.
"Really?" Miette asked.
"Hey, I was wondering, why don't we grab a bite to eat," Trevor suggested.
"Yeah, I'm pretty hungry," Tierno said giving a chuckle.
Shauna and Miette glanced at the two boys. Guess they were in such a competition that maybe they forgot to eat.
"Okay," Shauna and Miette both said in union.
They had all of their Pokémon so now would be a good time to go out and eat.
Viridian City-Restaurant
Though they just met, Trevor and Tierno accompanied by Shauna took Miette to a restaurant to have dinner. While they were waiting for their food and eating, they talked about their travels in the Kanto Region.
Trevor and Tierno explained how they were going to compete in the Pokémon and that they were going to be facing the Viridian Gym leader for their seventh badge. Miette already knew that Shauna was aiming for the Grand Festival and she told her the stories about contests she competed in.
While they were speaking, a familiar set of names came up. Ash Ketchum and Serena Gabena. Miette was intrigued when she heard that name knowing that she has encountered her twice and tried to flirt with Ash. Shauna even told Miette that Serena was whom she was trying to catch up to.
Little did the group know that in the same restaurant a table or two over, a familiar looking black hair boy in a red cap was listening in. It was Calem who came to observe some of the potential candidates for the Grand Festival. Calem heard that they were talking about Serena. Looks like they know her. Shauna was then in shock when Miette told her something.
"You actually met Serena!?" Shauna asked in shock.
"Sure did, and she beat me twice," Miette sighed, "Well, once in a contest, the other came in a festival tournament."
"Still, she got the better of you both times," Tierno stated as he picked at his food, "That Serena sure is something."
"I know, I can still remember our first battle together in Cerulean City," Miette said.
Shauna can recall that Cerulean City was where Serena got her lone contest ribbon until beating her in Celadon City for her second one. Miette explains about the hot matchup on the pool between her Jigglypuff and Serena's Fennekin. She admitted to playing mind games with Serena but was pleased that she kept her head straight and bested her. Shauna rolled her eyes with a smile, looks like Serena has a rival that loves to play her.
"If I can definitely recall first seeing Fennekin back when we first met her and Ash in Pewter City," Shauna said remembering their first meeting.
"Speaking of, did you see her in the Cinnabar Island contest?" Trevor asked.
"Of course, if I recalled that Delphox she had was the same Fennekin from before," Miette thought.
"It was," Shauna uttered, "Were you shocked to see what Delphox did on stage?"
Miette was memorized by those words. She actually watched that contest and recognized Serena. She even saw her and Delphox perform the battle bond to defeat Amelia's Galarian Rapidash.
"Yeah, I wondered how Delphox did that?" Miette questioned to herself, "Maybe they were editing it to make it look fantastic."
"I don't know that contest was live," Shauna said.
"Maybe we can hear from Serena when we see her again," Trevor suggested.
"No, it might be a secret that she doesn't want anyone to know how it's done. If sweet Serena wants to talk about it, let her talk about it," Tierno told the girls.
Calem heard what they were talking about. What Miette said was not true. He saw what happened with his own eyes when Serena's Delphox transformed like that. One thing was true, how did Delphox do that?
"You're right, that's her special thing," Miette said with some respect.
"Hey, Serena is staying on Cinnabar Island until Ash gets his seventh badge. Maybe you can call her tomorrow," Trevor suggested to Shauna, "We need to know if she really knows this girl. I mean I believe her, but I just want a verification."
"Yeah, it wouldn't hurt," Shauna replied.
"Why tomorrow?" Miette questioned, "Can't we call her now?"
"She's probably tired. We can let her know before the contest. Hopefully, she can watch you two dance off," Tierno said.
Shauna looked at Miette and figured it wouldn't be a bad idea. Also, despite talking about Miette, she should try to know if she really knows her.
"That's fine," Shauna and Miette both said in union agreeing.
The Next Day
Viridian City-Pokémon Center
It was the day of the contest and Shauna and Miette were already signed up Then what a coincidence. Shauna got a call on Serena on her Pokegear to know about the contest as she might watch. Shauna mentions to Serena about someone she knew without mentioning the name Miette. She hung up and went to the video phone where Serena called her.
"Hello?" Shauna questioned to the screen.
"Shauna?" Serena questioned on the other end.
The screen showed Serena sitting at the video phone in the Pokémon Lab on Cinnabar Island. Shauna smiled as she saw her friend and rival on the other end, and she didn't mind where she was calling from.
"Hey Serena," Shauna chirped.
"Hey Shauna," Serena chirped back, "So why did you want me to move to the video phone?"
"Well as I told you, I ran into someone who's also competing in this contest. I mentioned you after you won the Cinnabar Contest, and this coordinator may have heard of you before. I wanted to bring her to the screen to see if you recognize her," Shauna explained.
"Oh," Serena stuttered as her face had an unreadable expression.
Miette was standing by Shauna. She looked at the screen to see that it was Serena. Shauna told her about this coordinator but didn't mention her name. Miette smirked and spoke.
"Serena," Miette called out.
Miette walked over to the screen and put her face in front of the screen. Serena's eyes widened in nervousness when she saw Miette right there.
"Is that you Serena," the girl said as she sneered at her.
"Miette!" Serena shrieked.
"Aw, you remember me. It's been a while," Miette said in an adoring tone.
Miette can recall how Serena acts when she plays those games on her. Then she tried to lighten her smirk and play around.
"By the way, I heard someone got their five ribbons," Miette said in a kind tone and then to a playful stern tone saying, "Is that true you got all of your ribbons?"
"Well of course I did," Serena answered as she reached into her pocket and opened up her ribbon case, "How do you like that!"
"Well that isn't nice. I'm still at four ribbons and it's not fair that you beat me," Miette pouted in a playful tone.
"I'm kind of surprised. I thought you would have five ribbons already," Serena stated.
"Well after today, I will have five ribbons," Miette smirked.
"Not unless I get my fifth ribbon today," Shauna declared.
"We'll see about that," Miette rebutted.
"So who are you going to root for today Serena?" Miette questioned in her snooty tone.
"Well Miette, I hope you both do well," Serena said sheepishly.
"But who do you want to win?" Miette questioned in her snooty tone.
"Miette, you're making Serena uncomfortable," Shauna said.
Serena gave a sigh of relief on the other end. Miette should know how uncomfortable she makes Serena.
"So when is the contest?" Serena asked.
"It's in two hours. We've already signed up," Shauna answered.
"Great, I hope I get a chance to watch you both. I'm staying here until Ash gets his seventh badge," Serena told them.
"Aw, how sweet. Serena is following her prince charming around," Miette said mockingly.
"Miette! Me and Ash have been traveling since we began our journey," Serena rebutted, "And please don't do anymore teasing involving me and Ash."
"Oh I won't tease you about Ash, but I can't say the same for him," said Miette.
"Alright, well I got to get going. Good luck in the contest both of you," Serena said.
"Don't worry Serena, I'll make sure to win it for us!" Shauna declared.
"Not unless I beat you first," Miette rebutted, "Speaking of you never told us who you wanted to win."
Serena just abruptly hung up as the screen went black. Miette should've known that Serena didn't want any part of her playful crap. Her real focus was on Shauna and that fifth ribbon, not Serena. Wait a minute…
"I just realized, we forgot to ask Serena about Delphox!" Miette exclaimed.
"You heard Tierno, that's something she can keep to herself. If she wants to share her secrets on that, that is up to her," Shauna demanded, "Now let's go, I need to hurry up and get my last ribbon."
"Not unless I get it first," Miette told Shauna.
The two ran out of the Pokémon Center and aimed for the contest hall. Little did they know, there was a man watching the two girls as they left the Pokémon Center. He sneered at the two as he just saw that conversation on the video phone with Serena.
"So they must be acquaintances of the girl," the man said as underneath his outfit was a black uniform with a red R.
Viridian City-Contest Hall
Many people flooded the area as they were trying to get in. As soon as the two girls arrived, Tierno and Trevor parted ways to look for seats while Shauna and Miette went for the dressing room.
Shauna and Miette book looked at each other with Shauna smirking and Miette just giving out a confident look. The two knew this was going to be an interesting matchup.
"Well look what we have here, friends of Serena," a voice said as the voice is revealed to be Calem.
The two girls looked at Calem with confusion. How did he know about their connection with Serena. Miette on the other hand got a look at the boy. He looked rather handsome, almost resembling Ash with that outfit. He even had black hair.
"Excuse me but did anyone teach you not to talk to strangers," Miette said placing her hands on her hips.
"True, but they're not strangers when I hear them talk about people I've met in Kanto. Like Serena Gabena," Calem said giving a wink.
Wait, how did he know about Serena? If only the girls knew that he was at the restaurant last night listening in on their conversation.
"That's right, I heard you talking about your encounters with Serena meaning you must be rivals of Serena," Calem stated.
"You know Serena?" Shauna questioned.
"I've met her a number of times. I've even beat her in a Pokémon Contest myself. In fact, this city is where I first met her," Calem explained.
"And what is your relationship with Serena?" Miette questioned as she leaned in towards Calem.
The boy was starting to get nervous. Calem couldn't put his finger on it, but this girl seem to have a charm in the tone of her voice. Was she trying to play him?
"Just a good friend and rival," Calem answered, "The name is Calem Anderson."
"Hi Calem, my name is Shauna Florry," Shauna happily said.
"Miette Henderson," Miette said introducing herself while crossing her arms, "So a rival huh. I take it you're a Pokémon coordinator too. If you are, then why aren't you taking part in this contest?"
"It's easy, I already have met my requirements to qualify for the Grand Festival. I just came to watch other contests so I can study other coordinators as I could be facing them in the Grand Festival," Calem explained.
"Well you're in luck, the two of us are going for our fifth ribbon!" Shauna declared, "But I'm going to win."
"Not unless I beat you," Miette smirked.
"Dream on, I'm winning this for Serena," Shauna smirked.
"We'll see about that," Miette shrugged.
Calem rolled his eyes, this Miette girl really was snooty. At least she was better than that rich girl from Cinnabar Island. Calem just hoped that if Miette does win, it's with her own hard work. Knowing the name Henderson, doesn't sound like the last name of a wealthy family so he shouldn't have to worry about the money part.
"As long as you two have fun, give it your all," Calem told the girls, "As I said, I'll be watching as you girls are potential opponents for the Grand Festival."
"Oh don't worry Calem, I'll win this one and you'll see I'm the better coordinator," Miette said giving a wink.
Shauna and Miette departed from Calem as they headed for the dressing room. Calem watched the two girls as Shauna proved to be fun and full of energy. Miette on the other hand sure acts like a player. It almost sounds like she wants to win a date with him. That girl was interesting.
As Miette was walking to the dressing room, a thought came to her head as her face cringed.
"Drats, if I knew I was going to meet a handsome boy I would've brought some cupcakes," Miette thought to herself.
Contest Hall-Main Stage
"Hello ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to the Viridian City Pokémon Contest!" Lillian announced to the crowd.
The crowd roared with applause with Lillian's enthusiastic energy coming from her voice. After the roars of cheers, Lillian continued to speak as she introduced the three judges of Mr. Contesta, Mr. Suziko, and the Viridian City Nurse Joy who all made their opening comments.
"Today thirty coordinators will be competing for this!" Lillian announced holding a contest ribbon in her hand, "This is an official Viridian City Contest Ribbon. In order to have a chance of being top coordinator, they must collect five of these and today one coordinator will leave with another to their collection!"
The crowd erupted with applause once again as the contest was about to begin. In the stands was Calem trying to get himself a seat. There were not many open seats, but he was lucky enough to find one. This contest was going to interest Calem now that he has met two of Serena's rivals who are both competing for their final ribbon.
"Now lets welcome our first coordinator of the day, Shauna!" Lillian announced as Shauna leaped onto the stage in her usual contest attire.
Trevor and Tierno both jumped up and cheered their friend on as Shauna was holding her Pokeball ready to bring out her appeal Pokémon.
"Dewgong, spotlight!" Shauna announced throwing the Pokeball in the air.
Emerging from the Pokeball was a powder white sea lion with doll eyes and looked slightly bigger than a Seel only without the noticeable tusk. It was a Dewgong meaning that her Seel evolved somewhere down the road.
Dewgong was spinning in the air and then landed on his belly in a presentable way. Dewgong made a good entrance, but now there was the appeal itself.
"Dewgong jump up in the air with Aqua Jet!" Shauna called out.
Dewgong leaped upwards and darted up with Aqua Jet.
"And Aqua Ring!" Shauna retorted.
Dewgong then summoned water rings while darting upwards to give the Aqua Jet a great sense of life and power.
"Now spin back down with an Aurora Beam on the ground!" Shauna called out.
Dewgong began to descend by using Aurora Beam. The aurora from the beam caused the remaining water from Aqua Jet and Aqua Ring to change colors and give it that beautiful north pole vibe. Dewgong was coming in closer as the crowd wondered what would become of Dewgong when he hit the ground.
Shauna was prepared for that when Dewgong got close.
"Safeguard!" Shauna retorted.
Dewgong shrouded himself with an aura right when he hit the ground. The Aurora Beam stopped and Dewgong was engulfed in it. An aurora borealis was on stage which amazed the crowd with an outline of Dewgong within not looking hurt at all. As it became clear, Dewgong was still in his Safeguard no phased by his own attack one bit.
Dewgong then ceased the move and gave a bow to the audience with Shauna giving a bow too. The entire crowd erupted with applause. Calem was watching and gave a nod of the head.
"What an amazing display by Shauna and Dewgong giving us that north pole feeling, without the cold air of course!" Lillian announced as she turned to the judges, "Judges, what did you think?"
"The combinations of moves from Dewgong were presented perfectly. It almost looked like a real aurora borealis," Mr. Contesta announced.
"The whole presentation was remarkable," Mr. Suziko announced.
"Dewgong gave us a wonderful display ending with him in wonderful condition," Nurse Joy announced.
"Thanks for your feedback judges!" Lillian announced, "Now let's get ready to meet our second coordinator of the day!"
28 appeals later
Many more coordinators took the stage giving great shows. Some were good, others were alright. There was only one coordinator left to take the stage, Miette.
"Let's give it up for our final coordinator of the day! It's Miette!" Lillian announced as Miette appeared on stage in her contest attire.
Miette smiled confidently as she took the stage holding a Pokeball in her hand. Calem took a close look at Miette. She actually looked good in that dress. Wait, why was he having thoughts of a snooty girl in a dress? He really needs to focus on her abilities as a coordinator.
"Come on out Bellossom!" Miette announced releasing her Pokémon.
Emerging from the Pokeball was a green creature with red flowers on his head and a yellow green petal skirt on the lower body. This Pokémon who appeared before the audience was a Bellossom. Bellossom began to sway his arms left and right like a hula girl.
"Now Bellossom, use Grassy Terrain," said Miette.
Bellossom summoned grass to cover the whole stage with a garden aroma spreading across the stage and into the audience. It felt relaxing.
"Now use Petal Dance," Miette called out.
Bellossom brought out the pink petals and they started to scatter all across the stage giving more of that garden tone.
"Now use Moonblast!" Miette ordered.
Bellossom unleashed a pink orb up into the air while the petals were still flowing across the stage. Then Miette added a little something else.
"Along with Moonlight," Miette responded.
Bellossom covered himself in a white light while the Moonblast exploded up in the air and unleashed a bunch of sparkles which made the stage look like it was resembling a nighttime garden on a summer eve. The entire crowd roared with applause as it was the best performance so far.
"Amazing, Bellossom created what appears to be giving everyone that beautiful summer evening feeling with the display of those grass moves and moonlight abilities," Lillian announced, "Judges what did you think?"
"A nice touch of Grassy Terrain and Petal Dance really added that beautiful nighttime feeling to me and everyone else," said Mr. Contesta.
"Everything Bellossom did was truly remarkable," Mr. Suziko replied.
"The Pokémon was just as beautiful as the atmosphere he created, soothing and full of life," Nurse Joy commented.
"Well it looks like the judges approve of Miette's and Bellossom's appeal. Let's give them a round of applause!" Lillian announced.
The entire crowd roared as Miette and Bellossom gave a certain call. Calem sat there looking at Miette wondering how she and her Pokémon sparkled. Bellossom executed his moves brilliantly and even Calem felt relaxed from what Bellossom gave them.
He then saw how Miette was sparkling on stage with those moonlight sparkles. Wasn't sure what he was thinking about, but despite her snooty attitude, she was indeed a skilled coordinator.
"Okay Miette, you got me," Calem uttered.
Contest Hall-Waiting Area
Shauna was in the waiting room awaiting the results of the appeal rounds. While she was confident that she would be advancing, she couldn't help but envy Miette's and Bellossom's performance. Miette returned to the waiting area to spot Shauna.
"So what did you think about that?" Miette asked with a smirk.
"I'll admit, that was brilliant. I wish I were on stage to get that feeling of a nice summer eve," Shauna admitted.
"Even if it topped your north pole feel?" Miette questioned with a smirk.
"I got to respect my opponents. You didn't get four ribbons for nothing," Shauna told Miette.
"Alright everyone, the judges have made their decisions. Here are the eight coordinators who will be advancing to the next round!" Lillian announced.
Pictures were starting to appear on the screen and Miette and Shauna looked up to see where they stand. They were certain they would make the cut. And they did with Miette taking the top spot and Shauna right behind at number two.
"And there you have it! These will be the eight coordinators competing in round two!" Lillian announced.
"Looks like we made it," Shauna happily told Miette.
"Well obviously I was going to get to this round," Miette chuckled.
"And now the pictures will shuffle as it determines who will compete against who in the next round," Lillian announced.
The pictures shuffled around, and the matchups were set. Shauna would have the second match against a girl while Miette had the third match against a boy. Since they were on opposite sides of the bracket, the only way they could meet was on the final stage.
"Looks like I got the second match," Shauna said with determination.
"And I get the fourth," Miette smirked.
"Look out, because I'm going to win this contest for Serena!" Shauna declared.
"Hmph, not unless I have anything to say about it," Miette sneered.
Contest Hall-Main Stage
6 matches later
Just as expected, Shauna and Miette would appear on the final stage. Shauna was using her Farfetch'd in her contest battles while Miette used another new Pokémon. It was a green frog with a yellow belly with a green clockwise swirl. This Pokémon was known as Politoed who happened to be the same Poliwhirl that she used against Serena's Squirtle back at the Princess Day Festival.
"We had such a great display of battles, and now the Viridian City Contest will come to a close with Shauna versus Miette!" Lillian announced.
Shauna and Miette were standing on stage with each other. The two of them looked at each other with a competitive smirk.
"Listen Miette, I made a promise to Serena that we would be in the Grand Festival together. So I have to win," Shauna declared.
"Well you better give it your all because I'm not going easy on you," Miette told Shauna, "Me and Politoed can find those flaws you and Farfetch'd tend to show."
"We'll see about that," Shauna said as she shook Miette's hand.
It wouldn't be the end of the world for Shauna if she loses. She would seven more chances to get that fifth ribbon, but she would rather get it sooner than later.
Trevor and Tierno stood up and cheered Shauna on from the stands while Calem was still sitting there observing the battles. While both of Serena's rivals were decently skilled, it surprised him that Miette got his attention. Her Politoed not only overpowered his opponents but brought out the best display with his water attacks. At this rate, Politoed has the best chance of beating Farfetch'd, but the answers would come on the battlefield.
Shauna and Miette each took separate sides as they each got their Pokeballs ready. The clock was set for five minutes.
"This is it; the winner of this match will be the winner of the Viridian City Pokémon Contest! Is everybody ready!" Lillian announced as the crowd cheered with Shauna and Miette focused, "Alright, start the clock!"
The clock began to countdown.
"Showtime Farfetch'd!" Shauna exclaimed sending out Farfetch'd.
Farfetch'd stood on both of his feet spinning his leek and then pointing it towards Miette. He was awaiting his opponent.
"Politoed, spotlight!" Miette exclaimed sending out Politoed.
Politoed landed on his feet and clapped in front of Farfetch'd and the crowd. This was one of the evolved forms of Poliwhirl with Poliwrath serving as the other. With their fifth ribbon on the line, neither girl would hold back.
"Farfetch'd use Air Cutter!" Shauna called out.
"Jump up with Bounce!" Miette retorted.
Farfetch'd sent out a bunch of air blades, but Politoed evaded the attack with Bounce. It was a good strategy not only of evasion, but offense too. As Farfetch'd looked around for Politoed, he slammed down on top of the Wild Duck Pokémon.
"Perfect now use Double-Edge," Miette called out.
Politoed bounced off of Farfetch'd with Double-Edge sending both of them flying. Shauna was losing points fast as Farfetch'd needed to regain his composure.
"Now use Bubblebeam!" Miette commanded.
Politoed opened his mouth and fired off a flurry of bubbles right at Farfetch'd. Just as Farfetch'd regained his composure, Shauna countered Miette.
"Hang in there Farfetch'd, use Brave Bird!" Shauna called out to Farfetch'd.
The Wild Duck Pokémon darted his way towards Politoed. Bubbles were in the way, but with such elegance, Farfetch'd dissolved those bubbles into sparkles and then hit Politoed dead on. Miette lost a good chunk of points.
"Impressive," Miette smirked.
"Thanks," Shauna replied.
"But it won't be good enough, Politoed use Hyper Voice!" Miette responded.
The Frog Pokémon opened his mouth and sent out a massive sound wave that sent Farfetch'd flying across the stage. Any remaining bubbles were dissolved in result of the sound waves. Shauna lost another portion of points.
"Come on Farfetch'd use Air Slash!" Shauna yelled out.
Farfetch'd sent out a bunch of more powerful air blades and directed them towards Politoed.
"Bubblebeam!" Miette called out.
Politoed unleashed another Bubblebeam, but the Air Slash cut right through the bubbles and hit Politoed dead on. Miette would lose more points as Politoed was being knocked back.
"Perfect, now use Leaf Blade!" Shauna declared.
This felt like Shauna's trump card. Not many people knew Farfetch'd was capable of learning Leaf Blade. Farfetch'd charged right at Politoed with what could be the finishing blow, but Miette was smiling. Did she have something up her sleeve.
All answers were given when she said two words to Politoed.
"Ice Punch," Miette smirked.
Politoed let Farfetch'd come in close to deliver a massive Ice Punch. Shauna and Farfetch'd both looked on in shock as they never knew Politoed could learn such a move.
Farfetch'd was hit by the Ice Punch and Shauna lost even more points. Farfetch'd was completely frozen and unable to move. Miette was ready to finish this.
"Farfetch'd no!" Shauna cried.
"Now Politoed, throw that Farfetch'd up in the air and use Hydro Pump!" Miette told Politoed.
Politoed grabbed the frozen Farfetch'd and hurled him upwards towards the ceiling. Politoed opened his mouth and unleashed a powerful Hydro Pump right at Farfetch'd. The attack broke the ice and a bunch of tiny ice shards rained down on the stage.
Once Politoed finished, Farfetch'd plunged down onto the stage and crashed onto the floor. Shauna couldn't believe it. Farfetch'd had his guard down from Politoed's Ice Punch and it proved to be costly. The judges gave the red X's as Farfetch'd was unable to continue.
"Farfetch'd is not able to continue, meaning the winner of this final match is Miette and Politoed!" Lillian announced as the screen showed a picture of Miette and Politoed with the word WINNER underneath.
"Nice job Politoed," Miette said giving a bow.
"Politoed," Politoed responded.
Shauna recalled her fallen Farfetch'd. She was hoping to get her fifth ribbon today to join Serena, but that will have to wait another day. She gave a sad smile to her Pokeball.
"You did great Farfetch'd, we'll get'em next time," Shauna said.
"Shauna lost," Tierno said hanging his head down.
"Well Shauna has at least seven more attempts," Trevor sighed.
Calem couldn't believe it, but Miette actually won. Despite her little snooty attitude, she has proven to be a respectable opponent as she and her Pokémon knew how to beat Farfetch'd and how to present it. He knew she would be at the Grand Festival once she got her entry ribbon.
"Well Miette, I was hoping to win for Serena, but you got the better of me," Shauna said as she offered Miette her hand.
"You we're good too," Miette replied as she grabbed Shauna's hand.
The two shook hands for such a great battle.
10 minutes later
"We now would like to turn our attention to Miette as she will be presented the Viridian Ribbon!" Lillian announced.
Shauna and the other six coordinators stood on stage as Miette accepted her ribbon from Mr. Contesta. She has now won her five contests and has a chance to become top coordinator.
"Miette, I believe this is your fifth ribbon, am I correct?" Mr. Contesta proudly asked.
"It sure is," Miette answered.
Miette accepted the ribbon and presented it to the crowd as Bellossom and Politoed stood by her side. The crowd erupted in applause as Shauna applauded with her.
Backstage
After a meeting with Nurse Joy behind the scenes about her entry ribbon, Miette changed back into her regular attire and proceeded to leave the contest hall. She passed a TV which included a news report of a violent Venusaur rampaging the beaches of Cinnabar Island.
As Miette was walking down the hall, she saw someone standing in her way. It was that same boy from this morning. Calem stood there with his arms crossed with a neutral expression.
"Um, did you need something?" Miette asked.
"Yeah, I just wanted to let you know that when I first met you, you proved to be a bit stuck up," Calem sighed.
"What did you mean by that?" Miette questioned as she had her hands stuck on her hips.
"Maybe having a little mockery with your opponents like how you teased Shauna," Calem said.
"Hey, if it makes you feel better I teased Serena too when it comes to Ash," Miette said.
"You have?" Calem asked.
"Yeah, like how I told her to not keep her head in the clouds or else another boy could swipe him away, like me," Miette explained as she took a deep breath, "But despite my ways, I was trying to help her in two ways."
"Help Serena?" Calem questioned.
"Yeah, first was that if you wish to be the best that you got to clear your head of all distractions. Second was to maybe take her relationship with Ash more seriously if she didn't want to lose him to another girl," Miette explained.
"Well it worked, because she and Ash are now dating," Calem said.
"I know, and I still tended to poke that stick on Serena just to make sure she values that relationship," Miette explained.
"I guess your tactics helped her get better, and this came from a coordinator who was worthy of her five ribbons," Calem said.
"You really think I'm worthy?" Miette asked in belief.
"Hey, I met worse coordinators like one who pays a breeder to train their Pokémon and put no work in. You and your Pokémon gave a great performance and you even came up with a strategy to beat Farfetch'd," Calem explained, "You definitely are one of Serena's better rivals that's for sure."
Miette was flattered to hear that. This boy just complemented her on her skills as a coordinator and called her one of Serena's better rivals.
Despite her teasing towards Serena, deep down she sees her as a good friend and a worthy adversary. Truth is despite her snooty attitude she never had a chance to find a boy herself. She wonders if there would ever be someone like that for her like how Serena has for Ash. Well until she finds her prince charming, she might as well continue the teasing with her and Ash.
"Thanks Calem," Miette kindly said, "That's very thoughtful of you."
Calem wondered why he had some of those vibes towards a girl he just met. Miette on the other hand was amazed to see a boy complement her on her actions.
Viridian City-Outside the Contest Hall
Miette walks out with Calem only to see Shauna, Trevor, and Tierno again. Miette already mentioned to Calem where she was going to obtain her entry ribbon.
"Hey there Miette, congratulations on your win," Trevor said.
"We wished it was Shauna who won," Tierno said.
"Thanks boys," Miette replied.
Then they all look at Calem who was standing by her. Why was Calem with Miette? Was there something going on.
"Um, why is Calem with you?" Shauna asked.
"Oh, I wanted to see her to talk about how her performance went and I gave her some positive feedback," Calem answered.
"And we talked a little more about Serena," Miette chuckled.
"Well congratulations on getting your fifth ribbon once again," Shauna said, "Looks like you'll be going into the Grand Festival with Serena."
"Well not yet, I still got to get my entry ribbon," Miette said.
The three stood there in shock. An entry ribbon, what the heck was that?
"Entry ribbon?" Shauna questioned.
"Allow me to explain. It's a new method to officially gain access to the Grand Festival. When a coordinator wins their five ribbons, they will be given an official Pokémon League gym by random where they will have to face the gym leader in a full six-on-six battle. If they win, the gym leader will give them an entry ribbon to officially make them eligible for the Grand Festival," Calem explained.
"Why do coordinators have to get another ribbon like that?" Tierno asked.
"It's the best method to evaluate a coordinator knowing that they were serious and weren't just beating on novice coordinators for their five ribbons. They never know who they face, so this is the best way to know they're worthy to be in the Grand Festival," Calem explained.
They all took the words of what Calem said and let them sink in. Hearing that makes them realize it actually isn't a bad idea. Seriously, they wouldn't want to let anyone into the Pokémon League who just beat easy gyms which is why they have the eight.
"I think that's not a bad idea," Trevor said.
"Yeah, and guess what, I can get even with Serena for beating me to five ribbons," Miette told the group.
"Why's that?" Shauna questioned.
"Because the location of my entry ribbon will be right here in Viridian City," Miette declared putting her hands on her hips, "That means I can still get the entry ribbon before her!"
Guess they realized that flipped on Serena like that. Miette can beat her to the entry ribbon because her gym is right where she got her fifth ribbon.
"Well I guess we can't stop you from that," Shauna sighed.
"Hey, I got an idea Miette, since the Viridian Gym is going to open tomorrow and me and Trevor are planning to get our Earth Badges, why don't you come with us," Tierno suggested.
"Really?" Miette questioned in shock.
"Yeah, if you're going to be in the Grand Festival and you know Serena, I like to know more about you," Shauna said as she bumped her elbow to her side.
"Well I guess it makes sense, since we all have to get something important before Indigo Plateau," Miette stated as she looked at Calem, "What about you Calem?"
Calem looks down at the ground. He wants to continue surveying coordinators and training for the Grand Festival, but this Miette girl intrigues him. Not to mention she is one of Serena's rivals.
"I'll think about it," Calem said.
"Okay, we want to be there around 11 o'clock tomorrow. If you want to watch us, meet us in the gym," Trevor said.
Miette then walked up towards Calem with a confident smile. Calem's face was tensing up.
"If you come watch me tomorrow, I'll give you some cupcakes. I was a fool not to give you any today," Miette sheepishly said.
"We'll see," Calem said nodding his head.
With that, the group made their way back to the Pokémon Center. While the group would love for Calem to take some time from his schedule to visit the Viridian Gym, Miette unknowingly hopes he comes the most.
The Next Day
Viridian City-Viridian Gym
The trio of Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna arrived at the Viridian Gym. It was an orange building with stones on the base. There was a path to the door and columns were on the side of the path.
The three looked at the building and saw two men in battle armor with axes guarding the door. Maybe they were giving this gym a colosseum like feeling. The only question remains, why was this gym closed for so long.
"That must be the Viridian Gym," Trevor stuttered.
"Let's go guys, let's dance our way to our seventh badge," Tierno said doing a spin.
"Wait for me!" a voice called out.
The group turned around to see Miette rushing in from behind. She had a basket of cupcakes in her arms.
"Sorry, we must've forgot you were coming to get your entry ribbon," Shauna sheepishly said.
"It's okay, I was baking for the occasion," Miette said, "Say did Calem show up?"
"No, we haven't seen him," Tierno answered giving a shrug.
"Oh," Miette sighed.
Miette was a little sad that Calem didn't come. She baked those cupcakes especially for him if he was going to come. Turns out his training may be more important than possibly rooting her on.
"Well let's hurry up, if we act too slow, the gym could close again," Trevor stated as he ran for the door.
Trevor approached the door, and the men tilted their axes blocking the entrance to the Viridian Gym. What was that about?
"I wish to challenge the Viridian Gym," Trevor uttered.
"Sorry, only one challenger at a time. We already have one inside the gym right now," the guard told Trevor.
Dang it, someone was already taking on the gym leader. Guess the gym leader doesn't want other potential challengers to see their Pokémon or strategy is they could get an idea on what to do. Tierno, Shauna, and Miette followed him to the door. Trevor gave a disapproving look to the group.
"Someone is challenging the gym leader right now," Trevor told the group.
"Well, did you ask if you can go in next?" Shauna asked.
Well why didn't he think of that. Sure he can't enter until the challenger is done with their battle, but never hurts to book the next visit. Trevor then turned to the guards.
"If it's okay, can me and my friends come in after this challenger is done? My name is Trevor Zynn, and this is Tierno Jubalie and we wish to challenge the gym leader for the Earth Badge," Trevor declared as Miette stepped in.
"And my name is Miette Henderson, I also wish to challenge the gym leader for my entry ribbon," Miette said as she presented the paper to the guard indicating that she has won five ribbons and is told to challenge this gym.
"We will let you all in after this battle," the guard told them, "Under one condition!"
All of them gulped.
"All three of you will have to challenge the gym leader at the same time. We can't potential outside challengers witness the battles inside in fears that they could gain a strategy," the other guard explained.
The group turned and looked at each other. So all three of them would challenge the gym leader at the same time. This was something new. Miette was wondering how this would play out. They said a six-on-six battle, but now she may be battling with these two boys.
"I accept," Trevor confirmed.
"Same here," Tierno confirmed.
"Me too," Miette confirmed.
"Very well," the guard replied, "Just wait until the battle is over."
So the four would have to wait until this challenger was finished with their battle. Shauna would just sit in there and watch. She wondered to herself that if she were competing in the Grand Festival, what would happen if she got the Viridian Gym? She was coming in to watch, and this gym could be a potential landing spot for her. No, she wasn't going to worry about that unless that becomes a reality.
10 minutes later
They were still waiting on the challenger to finish their battle. They actually had some of the cupcakes Miette baked. The trio found those cupcakes to be lavishly delicious.
"These are good Miette," Tierno happily said.
"Why thank you, I baked them myself," Miette said.
"You are a talented baker I see," Shauna complemented.
Miette gave a slight chuckle. She was glad that they loved her cupcakes. If only Calem were here to have a cupcake.
"Mind if I have one?" a voice asked.
Miette turned around to see who that was. She was flattered to see Calem standing there with a smile on his face. She couldn't believe it, he decided to come after all.
"Sure," Miette said as she handed him a cupcake, "And thanks for coming."
"Well I was thinking about it, and we'll you are going to be my rival, so why not come in and watch you get that ribbon," Calem said as he took a bite of the cupcake, "By the way these are amazing."
"You really like them!" Miette exclaimed in joy.
"Yeah, they're the best cupcakes I've had," Calem complemented.
Wait, why did Miette get ecstatic like that? She knew it was a boy, but why? Maybe she wanted to forge a friendly rivalry. It didn't matter, what mattered was he came.
"Thanks Calem," Miette replied.
One of the guards was listening to something in their helmet like an earpiece. He then turned to the group.
"The match is over, the challenger has won," the guard announced, "Once he exits the gym, you may enter."
Everyone finished their cupcakes and looked at the door. The guards moved their axes as the door opened. The trainer who just came out victorious was exiting the gym with his hands in his pockets and a scowl on his face.
The group of five doesn't know who this purple hair trainer was, but it was Paul. The cold boy has just gotten his last badge that now allows him to compete in the Pokémon League.
Trevor looks at the boy as he walks down the path and away from the gym.
"So what was the gym leader like?" Tierno asked.
"None of your business," Paul muttered as he just continued walking, "I got my eighth badge already. I'm off to do some training."
The group watched as Paul walked further away. Looks like that trainer didn't want to share anything about the gym leader or what Pokémon the leader would use. Maybe he wasn't allowed to say anything.
The group then turned back to the guards who had their axes standing vertically on the ground. The guards looked at Trevor, Tierno, Shauna, Calem, and Miette.
"You may all enter," the guard announced as the group proceeded to enter the gym.
I will stop right there! You'll know soon how their visit to the Viridian Gym went.
Yes, I decided to have Miette win this contest, but fear not Shauna will eventually win her fifth ribbon and entry ribbon. I just won't write that part.
What did you guys think of the interactions between Trevor, Tierno, Shauna, Miette, and Calem? Maybe it seems rushed, but it does look like a shipping could be in the making for Calem and Miette.
Now stayed tuned as we get back to the story as we'll finally get to see Ash's Cinnabar Island Gym Battle. After that…another interlude will take place, and then dark force number two. Don't forget to review and see you next time.
