Chapter 82: The Water Dance

Katara giggled as they ran their way through the festival. Zuko trailed behind her, just happy to see her carefree and happy. They deserved that after all of this time.

Suddenly, Katara stopped and gasped, looking back at him. He gave her a confused look, intrigued at what she was so shocked about.

"This is my favorite song!" she told him, giddy with excitement. She grabbed his hand once more, "Come dance with me!"

Zuko bit his lip and looked around apprehensively, "Uhh I don't know about that Katara… You know how I feel about dancing" he despised it. Anybody who knew him knew that. The last time he danced was the party he got poisoned at, and any time before that didn't leave a great track record. It didn't leave something to be desired.

"Besides, I don't know any southern water tribe dances…" he told her, looking around at the other couples who seemed to instinctively move to the beat of the music without a second thought. It was like they knew exactly where to step and when, so they moved amongst one another in one cohesive group.

But then she looked at him with those eyes. Damn it, those eyes, he thought.

"Please Zuko… I can teach you!" she told him, slightly excited, but also putting on her best face to get what she wanted.

Zuko sighed, rubbing his temples. There was no way he wouldn't regret this.

He let her drag him out onto the dancefloor. He sighed, but he had to admit, the look on her face did make it a little worth it. But only a little, he reasoned.

Katara bowed in front of him and indicted for him to bow back to her. Every instinct in him told him to do the standard fire nation bow. It was the one he had done all his life. But then he remembered that he was trying to blend in, and not be the Fire Lord for a day.

He remembered that was easier said than done.

They each raised a hand, their hand reaching up and clasping together. They spun around each other, slowly, their eyes locked together. Zuko's eyes held every inch of uncertainty and nervousness they could possibly hold. But Katara's eyes held trust and patience, making him feel a little less nervous.

As they started to dance, his motions were stiff like a fire bender. He was harsh and bold, and everything felt tight. But Katara gave him a look and he knew what it meant, as if he were reading her mind.

Feel the music. Let your dance flow like water.

Zuko closed his eyes for just a moment, and as he let himself go. He began to mix the two. He still held the fierceness and pride of a fire bender. But his motions flowed together like water.

And then by the time the crowd gathered round, he didn't even know they were there.

He spun her in circles, her arms out to make her body spin faster and keep her balance. Katara held the grace and poise of a water tribe woman. She was proud and strong as she danced but her movements flowed gracefully.

Zuko felt the music build and if everyone was going to watch, he was going to give them a show. It was the least he could do not to embarrass himself. He didn't even have to explain to her what he was doing next, it was almost like she read his mind this time.

He grabbed her by her waist and hoisted her up and over his head. At the same time, she pulled water from the air and tied it around herself, causing her to soar above his head. She spun for a moment, before the water ribbon unraveled and she gently fell back into Zuko's arms.

The crowd erupted in cheers for their display. But the two were lost in eachother's eyes, their heavy breathing no match for the thundering of their hearts pressing against each other.

They didn't know how long they stood there but Zuko finally set her back down, but he didn't let go. For this, she was grateful as her knees threatened to give way under her weight, but he supported her and let her lean against him, just like he always did.

The crowd began to look away, going back to what had intrigued their interest before the couple started dancing. But after a moment, the bell ran out and people began to look around. The band moved aside to allow Malina and Maliq up onto the stage.

Katara watched them, thinking about her conversation with her father. She smiled slightly then looked to Zuko, "My father has been good to you…"

Zuko looked at her, confused at what she was going on about, "Since I arrived, yes he has…" he told her, "Why do you ask?"

"Maybe I should do the same for him…" she looked down slightly, a smile gracing her features. But she looked back at him, "Come on, it must be time for the speech"

They walked up to the stage but lingered in the back, allowing the village to get close to the stage. She was finally going to get to hear the name of her new nephew. She'd been trying to pry since he had been born. But the new parents were keeping it hush. Katara was secretly hoping they'd slip in front of her, but the two kept their resolve, which was strange at least for her brother.

"Good evening my brothers and sisters of the South! Are you all having a good time?" Malina riled up the crowd as they all cheered in encouragement. Malina smiled and continued, "My name is Malina, as many of you already know. My brother Maliq and I were brought here as part of the southern reconstruction project. Together with you, we are going to usher the south into a brand new era!"

The crowd cheered, but Katara only smiled, not letting her own thoughts get the best of her.

"With this factory, we'll help you make the most of your natural resources, so you can finally establish a presence for yourselves on the world stage!"

The crowd was eating at the palm of her hand, hanging on her every word. Malina seemed to love every part of it.

"But even with these new ventures, there is something we can never forget… The love of each other… We are all family, no matter what blood we may align too" she paused for a moment, "And one of our family members is sharing something exciting tonight…"

"Everyone welcome someone you all know and love… Your very own hero! Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe!"

They erupted in cheer once more as Katara watched her brother and Suki take the stage. They both seemed nervous. Sokka was never known to be good in front of a big group of people like this. But Katara could see how he hoisted himself up by his boots and stood tall. He had been practicing a lot since training their father.

Sokka cleared his throat, "Good evening everyone… I know what you all are waiting for so I'll make this brief…"

He reached down and grabbed his son from Suki's arms, with the carefulness of a new father.

"Everyone I would like you to meet…"

The crowd waited with bated breath.

"Koda of the Southern Water Tribe!"

The crowd cheered with oo's and ahh's, all clapping and cheering for the new addition, while still trying to not be too loud and alert the sleeping child.

Katara smiled, and a tear fell from her cheek. She already knew the name came from their father's, just shortened. Knowing her brother, it was probably so nobody would confuse the two. But still, she smiled and laughed slightly.

But over the roar of the crowd, she felt rumbling beneath her feet. Her face narrowed in confusion, looking underneath her. The moon was full tonight, making her acutely aware of all of the snow and water around her. But something underneath them was not made of snow or water at all.

She pressed a hand to the ground, feeling like Toph with the earth. Zuko looked down at her in worry, "What's wrong?" he asked her.

Katara shook her head, "Something's not right…"

But the crowd seems unbenouced to her worry, even those on stage, who could see the look on her face.

"Perhaps Sister Katara would like to come up and say a few words!" Malina suggested, hoping to include the younger girl.

Katara stood, "Everybody needs to get out of here!"

That's when the ground began to crack underneath them.

Dun DUN DUUNNNN! Cliff hanger I know! But stay tuned to see what happens! Until next time!
