His words, as quiet as they were sincere, stunned her. Despite the circumstances of her relationship, in the beginning, she had loved Jirōbō as much as her heart would allow and without effort. If she had never loved him, the marriage would not have existed and nothing that followed, either. "Then why…." She trailed off, her eyes widening as it occurred to that Sesshoumaru Tashio would not have revealed this to her if it were important, not so early in such a shaky relationship. The truth of his words hit home even harder and she stared at him uncertainly.
If he had never loved his wife and he was sharing that information with her, he must have truly not cared about the woman at all. It made her sad to think about that, to think and wonder about a man who could marry a woman and feel not a drop of emotion for her. "Why did you mate her, if you didn't love her?" she asked softly, too riveted by his revelation to even think about the food in front of her.
The derisive snort was almost unnoticeable, as quiet as it was, that it surprised her. "We were not mates," he answered honestly, taking another bite and noting that hers was still mostly full. "Eat," he ordered. She was entirely too thin for being pregnant and it bothered him both to notice, and to care.
