She was so focused on her own thoughts, that Kagome barely noticed his suddenly silence, or the distracted air that had come over him. She wanted desperately to believe in a world where love still existed, where soul mates met. A place where a girl could follow that bright red string to the other end and find the person they were meant to be with for all time.
The question was, could her heart handle a second round? Already she carried so many scars and her trust in people, though still intact, was running thin, let alone the trust in herself. What if she got hurt again? What if it was a trap? How would she know the difference between what she wanted and what was real? Wasn't the saying, 'fool me once, shame on you, twice, shame on me?'
So lost in her thoughts, she nearly jumped when he was suddenly beside her, his hand held out to her. The suddenness of it, the distraction his presence presented completely derailed her train of thought. Glancing from his hand, to his face and then to the dance floor, she gladly pushed those depressing thoughts away and stood, taking his hand.
She would enjoy the evening; enjoy a dance with a handsome man and save depressing thoughts for another night. "I would love to," she said softly.
