Chapter 58

I need medication

The frantic call from Maddie sent Helen to her private library. Thumbing through the collection of worn binding and discolored parchment she realized the need for an expert.

"Maddie, this is Alice." Helen introduces the elderly woman.

The wrinkles streaming through her face along coupled with the frizzy white ponytail stopping somewhere near her midback makes it difficult to guess her age.

Maddie sits across from the frail-looking figure often sneaking a peek at Helen.

"She was recommended to me by Elizabeth. Rick's sister." Helen licks dry lips as she hopes Maddie does not get up and leave. "Remember, the woman that ran the compound."

"Yes, I remember? But why did you get her involved?"

The young woman sits bewildered by Helen's pensive expression.

"I checked my books. Maddie, this is something from the spiritual plane."

"Helen, when I told you Ben could not come tonight, I thought, you'd," her words are hushed by the almost gray colored hand lifted in her direction.

"Shh, little girl. Helen has told me what has happened to you."
"Tell you what?" The question shoots from her stern expression.

Helen explains to Maddie the little amount of information that was told to this woman.

"I am Alice, tell me all. Leave nothing out."
Maddie sits back in the metal chair, she picks up a coffee cup from the white kitchen tabletop and begins.

Helen listens with wide eyes.

Her call to Elizabeth lasted seconds before being given the woman Alice's number.

After leaving very little out, Maddie sighs. She does not enjoy this type of intervention , especially rehashing the intimate details of her last sexual escapades with Ben.

"Maddie…" Helen sees the growing anger on the young woman's face. "Please, you must listen."

Maddie's relaxed unblemished skin hides the hurricane brewing inside her.

Through clenched teeth, she hints at her feelings.

"I hope your satisfied Helen. Now, you know certain particulars about my sex life."
As Maddie stands, Alice again waves a shriveled hand.

"You are not one of us." A strong voice emits from the arched body before her. "Your father's people knew of our existence."
"What do you know of my father?" The young woman sees Helen's hand touch hers.

"Please, Maddie…please listen." Helen asks.

"I think, though you are not of his blood." She coughs. Raising a glass of water, the tremors force Maddie to reach out and steady the older woman's hand.

"His love for you is greater than any lack of blood. You have some of his spiritual nature.'

Alice thrusts her head over the table and toward Maddie.

"You are being contacted by one of us. You see it in a haze. You see it incomplete cause your father is not blood. That is why it is so jumbled."
Alice's burst of energy has caused her to lean back on her chair. A rapid set of breaths fill the kitchen.

"Contact…by who? Is it Sarge?" Maddie looks at Helen.

"No, this American agent. This person."
Maddie's attention has bee stolen. She no longer wishes to leave.

"Joe, he's trying to contact me?"
"No!" Alice snaps back with another surge of power. "His people do not believe in such things. Only the gifted or special will hear messages from the communicators of his God."
"You mean, angels?" She shakes her head. "I don't understand." Maddie bites a lower lip. Her expression is no longer one of anger or disgust. "Please, tell me what it means?"

"It is a warning. A warning about you." The elderly oracle needs to inhale. "The spirit comes to you in the form of this human." A slight cough pauses her words. "He cannot warn you, so this spirit…one of us…one of us."

In the blink of an eye, Alice becomes silent. The familiar scent of the ocean blankets the kitchen and its occupants.

"Helen, do you smell that?" Maddie asks.

"Alice, Alice," Helen moves to the unconscious woman. Placing a hand on her revives the seer.

"I can't tell cause you are not pure blood, like your father." A round of deep breaths does little to straighten the woman in her chair.

"Alice, you must lay down." Helen says.
"No, Helen…this girl is in trouble. A great danger waits for her. It is close. It is deadly."

"What waits for me? Who is trying to warn me?"
Alice's eyes begin to close. Neither woman at her side want to disturb her.

A whisper leaves her mouth.

"The one close to this human…the one that loves…this…human." A cough shakes her head.

"Alice please," Helen tries to have her stand. She wants the older woman to rest.

"Girl," being held by Helen does not stop the vision. "This human loved you."

Maddie runs to help Helen, as Alice crumples in her arms.

"Girl, the one that loved him is your messenger."

Helen retains control of the elderly visitor and guides her to the bedroom.

Maddie stands, she too finds it a strain to gain a breath.

"The one that loved this human?" She looks around Helen's living room, as if expecting to see someone.

"No, it can't be. No…" The young woman trembles at the thought.

"No! What is the danger? Close…the danger is close."

Her hand presses on her breast.

Tia?

The thought is too horrible to be spoken.

Tia!

"Oh, she must be…" Maddie sighs, regaining composure. "She doesn't know what she's talking about."

Picking up her blue-jean jacket, she calls to Helen. After being reassured that the woman is just resting and not in any danger, Maddie leaves.

"Tia, come back from the dead to help me?" A chuckle arises as she enters her SUV.

Preparing to drive away, she looks in the rear view mirror.

"I should tell Helen." A smirk takes her expression. "Next time no witch doctor."
Pulling away from the curb, "next time…a psychiatrist. That's what I need."

Nervous fingers attempt to choose a radio station. Pulling her trembling hand back

"Yes…I need medication."
