90s
It's the middle of the night in a sleeping village. A cow moos loudly after which a truck rides away. The inhabitants of the house turn on the lights and head outside. The man of the house is devastated seeing all of his large livestock missing. The narrator starts: "If you ever wandered what can happen to the minority group when their police and military leave. Here is a short example."
Next scene: The police station. The man from before explains his situation to the local police officer who nods and takes notes.
"Alright, we will look into it and call you if we find anything" the officer says coldly not even looking at him. The man is angry but does not say anything. He leaves with a bad feeling in his gut.
Next scene: His neighbor puts a sign 'For sale' on two languages. The man looks at him disappointed. "Are you planing to leave? Just like that?" he criticises the neighbor.
"What else am I supposed to do. My wood is cut without permission, my animals keep disappearing one by one and, from time to time, I hear strange men entering my yard in the night. What am I supposed to do? Shoot them? My family would be massacred...I got the message. I am taking them somewhere safe before they get hurt to" the neighbour says bluntly. The man makes a face but ask no more questions.
Next scene: A few days later, a soldier from the other side shakes hands with the neigbor. As he is given the keys to the house, the soldier gives him a large stack of bills. The man observes from his yard. His neighbor comes over to show him the money. "I got a fair price" he says smiling.
The man is not impressed. "Did you ask how he got so much money all of a sudden?" he says bitter. The neighbor shushes him because the soldier is still in the yard.
"Go ahead...Ask him how he managed to acquire so much money in such a short amount of time" the man yells louder making his neihbor flinch and whisper: "Do you want to get us killed?"
Next scene: After a few months. The village has changed dramatically. Many families sold everything they had and left. The new owners of their houses speak a different language and look at the ones that stayed as intruders. The man sighs. The police never found out who took his cows, or vandalised his car, or destroyed his father's grave stone. And yet he stayed, despite the desperate pleadings of his wife.
The man walks with his gardening equipment to tend to his fields. On the way there, he glances at another new villager a little too long. This person stares back at him frowning.
Next scene: Once in the field, the man is ambushed by a group of young men. He struggles but they hit him so hard, he loses consciousness. Everything goes dark. He wakes up in a strange truck, with his hands tied. Around him, he sees other men in the same position. Terrified, he asks what is happening but none of them really know. We see the truck trailer from behind taking them down the dusty road God knows where.
The narrator starts again: "A person left without protection is no more than pray for the stronger. There are rare examples, where the mighty showed pity to such poor souls... This is not one of those examples." As she talks, we see a line of refugees in vehicles or all kinds. They seem to be carrying large amounts of household items.
A group of soldiers watches them smug. One of them takes his gun and aims. At first he toys with the notion but after a moment he aims it with a superior smile. The first shot is heard making the poor refugees scream and hide. Amused by the sight, other soldiers start firing. The scattering of people on the road only enhances their zest. The weapons fire while they run, leaving a large number of dead bodies lying where they fell.
Back in Belgrade
"What do you mean you don't want to hire foreign experts?" we see Serbia yelling terrified at someone. The person in question is her then boss, Slobodan Milošević (Слободан Милошевић).
"I'm saying that we do not need some modern day expense when we clearly got the truth on our side" he says with conviction.
"Modern day?" she says amused by his naivety. "It's a tale as old as time. Experts from renowned countries were paid to come and report the events ever since WWI. How do you think Archibald Reiss ended up here? He was paid for his services."
"I assure you, we do not need another biased fake-friend to pat us on the back...Not after all the evidence we have against our enemies" the boss continues. He opens his drawer and shows her a huge pile of papers. "There, it's all in black and white. Very soon I will file a lawsuit against them."
Serbia looks at him baffled. "Are you crazy?! Do you know who you are up against? What kind of politician are you?"
"I'm a lawyer first, and a damn good one! I know the situation seems grim but lies and fabrications cannot last forever. This will show the entire world what exactly happened" her boss says pressing the large, heavy folder. She facepalms herself, exhausted from arguint.
Her boss sits down and looks at her empathetic. "You look tired, why don't you take a break. You haven't had a vacation since the Yugoslav wars started."
She looks at him and with a heavy sigh agrees.
Next scene: At Greece's place. Serbia is on the beach. She is lying on the beach chair in her swimming suit and glasses. Greece, dressed for the beach approaches her.
"How are you feeling?" he asks sitting down on the chair next to her.
"Bad" she blurts and takes off her sunglasses.
"Trouble at home?" he says hesitant to start this conversation.
"You can say that. I think NATO is out to get me" she continues.
Greece turns away not saying a word. She looks at him worried. "This is your cue to say 'Of course not..." or "Here's what you need to do to stop it..." she says jokingly imitating his voice but is in fact dead serious.
Greece looks at her again holding back his emotions. "Don't worry about ti for now. Enjoy your vacation. There will be plenty of time to talk about it later" he says and pats her on the shoulder.
"But" she manages to utter before he interrupts: "Do you like your room? How about I upgrade it to an all-inclusive?"
Seeing his face, she hides her anxiety with a smile and a nod. He then stands up and walks away, leaving her to dread in silence.
