Supergirl Lost

Chapter Sixty-One: An Unofficial End

Kara shot off like a rocket, picking up speed as she kept Thanos in her sights. She wanted him to hurt. It was the only thing she could think about as her eyes heated up to a terrifying degree before she cut loose and unleashed a torrent of heat vision across the battlefield, cutting through ever single soldier in her path to the monster in front of her.

A heavy weight slammed into her side, throwing her off course as she slammed into the ground and bounced several times. With a savage snarl, she was on her feet quickly. Okay. If Thanos' children wanted to die a second time, who was she to deny them?

She shot off once more, this time headed for the big one, the one that had hit her with his weapon. She didn't remember his name, didn't care to, and would forget about him once he was dead.

Kara slammed into the creature as hard as she dared, her fist impacting has jaw with a sickening crack that echoed over the battlefield before she suddenly stopped his backwards momentum, gripping his neck between her small fingers. She swung him like a ragdoll over her shoulder, planting him firmly in the ground. Well, more than firmly, actually. The big one was little more than a smear on the Earth.

Something impacted the back of her head. The object exploded, knocking her forward slightly in surprise. Growling, she turned bright red eyes towards the enemy, spying the horned woman from two years ago. Kara gave a wolfish grin before letting loose a blast of heat vision that cut through everything in its path towards the alien woman before it finally pierced straight through her eyes and into her brain.

Proxima Midnight died before she even knew what hit her.

Now, without anyone else in her immediate line of sight that she deemed worthy of death, Kara turned her sights to Thanos, and was pleased to see he had watched her kill one of his little followers. She bent her knees and took off once again, rocketing across the battlefield, dodging around the likes of Tony, cap, and T'Challa.

A savage war cry let itself loose from her throat as she neared her target, shouldering Thanos in his middle. She grunted as her shoulder cracked on impact with the armor surrounding his torso. Uru, the same metal Thor's hammer was made out of.

Kara shrugged off the pain as her solar batteries recharged her cells as fast as they were depleted. Thanos smirked. That damned smirk. The look that had plagued her nightmares for two years, featured prominently in every dream, every memory, every waking moment that her beloved was not beside her.

Thanos. He looked so sure of himself; so proud of all the suffering he caused. Of the trillions of lives he'd ruined with a snap of his future self's fingers. Kara hated it. Hated that look, hated the abomination in front of her.

"You took everything from me!" Kara snarled. "I won't let you do it again."

"It's destiny," Thanos gloated as he looked beyond the blond in front of him. Kara turned her head, spying T'Challa running after a gauntlet covered in glowing gems. She turned to him with her own smirk.

"Over my dead body," Kara growled as she advanced on her prey. She would never let Thanos touch those stones. She'd die first.

She threw a haymaker that Thanos caught in his large fist before her other hand lashed out like a viper, crashing into his chin and sending him flying. She flew through the air, bringing her hands together and slamming him back down to Earth before diving, feet first, and planting herself onto his chest. The Uru armor creaked and groaned under her mighty strength before her ankle was enveloped in Thanos' hand. Far quicker than a being of his size should've been able to move, he pulled Kara's feet out from under her and slammed her into the ground.

Kara's eyes lit up as she unleashed her heat vision straight into the mad titan's face, forcing him to let her go. She crashed into a pile of rubble before springing up, unleashing her heat vision once again. He blocked it with his sword, the metal beginning to glow a bright red as it heated up thanks to her relentless fury fueling her most destructive ability.

"Rain fire!" Thanos called to one of pathetic little minions.

"But sire, our troops!" Corvus Glaive called back to his master.

"Just do it!" Thanos grunted, his footing beginning to slide as the heat vision pushed him back.

Kara ceased her heat vision as missiles began to rain down from the massive ship. Several missiles impacted clusters of Asgardian and Wakadan soldiers, flinging them through the air as it they weighed nothing. Many didn't survive.

"No!" Kara shouted as she broke off her attack, watching Wanda come close to one such explosion. She shot across the battlefield and wrapped her love in a tight embrace as the missiles shook the ground. One came close and staggered the blonde, but she recovered, keeping her bullet resistant cape around Wanda.

The bombardment came to an end as the guns redirected themselves skyward. Kara took the moment to look Wanda over for injuries.

"I'm alright, my love," Wanda spoke, cupping Kara's cheek in her hand. Kara allowed herself to lean into the tender touch ever so slightly as silent tears pooled in the corners of her eyes. For the past two years, the closest she had ever felt to Wanda was in her dreams. To have her here, in her arms? The sensation threatened to overwhelm her.

A shockwave rippled through the air as Thanos' mighty warship exploded, falling to Earth in large pieces. Hovering above the corpse of the giant ship was a blonde Kara only had a vague recollection of.

"Seems I missed quite a bit," Wanda joked. "Friend of yours?" she teased, taking note of the similarities in physical appearances of the two blondes.

"Hardly. I left before I could get to know her," Kara scowled, surveying the battlefield. The bombardment now stopped, she could see that Thanos' forces had taken the momentary distraction to regroup themselves. "Go," Wanda said. "I'm right behind you." Kara hesitated, but complied as she flew towards the now grounded blonde.

"Good to have you back, Supergirl," Carol said, picking up the gauntlet from a very nervous looking Peter Parker, no doubt nervous because he had, most likely, never been surrounded by so many powerful women.

"Yeah well, couldn't pass up the chance to kill the bastard a second time," Kara shrugged before her eyes focused on the horde of aliens.

"This moment," Peter started. "This is cool and all, what with all the women here, and I am super down for it because, you know, it's awesome, but…how are you gonna get through all that?" he asked.

"You'd be surprised, Pete," Kara replied before nodding to Carol. "What's the plan? I haven't exactly been paying attention and I don't have any comms on me right now."

"Some guy, Scott, I think? Yeah, he's got a van with a quantum tunnel in the back," Carol summed up.

"Not the strangest thing to have in your van, I suppose," Kara grunted as she found the van, swarming with aliens all around it. "Okay. Well, if you're going to go through the tunnel, you'll need one of those fancy matching wristwatches." Kara took hers off (nobody had bothered, thinking she was dead) and handed it to Carol.

"That seems a bit simple for time travel," the other blonde replied. Kara snorted.

"Yeah, a bit. But I know the dates you'll need to go to return the stones to and-"

"Not all of them. Tony and Steve had to make a detour, all the way back to April fourth, nineteen seventy," Nat but in. Kara rolled her eyes.

"Yes, thank you. Now, the other dates," the black clad blonde rattled off the dates the other stones were taken. Carol committed them to her memory before turning to face the horde. "Alright. I'll cover you, you take the stones back," Kara said. Carol nodded before bending her knees.

"Let's do this," she said. Kara and Carol took off, the others fighting and killing the alien dogs behind them as the two charged into the fray.

"On your left!" Kara shouted as Thanos tried to charge Carol. The older blonde twisted and turned through the air, deftly dodging the mad titan as Kara hit him with her heat vision. He flew across the battlefield as Kara came to a halt. He wasn't getting by her. "You've lost, Titan, and I'm going to enjoy killing you a second time," she snarled as he got to his feet. He raised his spinning blades like an oversized javelin and launched it straight for her. Kara smirked and leaned to the side. "Pathetic. Now, where-"

She was cut off by an explosion, Carol flew past her, tumbling ass over tea kettle as she bounced across the field. Kara herself was blown to her knees as the shockwave rode over her broad shoulders. She had to shake her head to clear it of the ringing in her ears. When she stood back up, she turned to see that the van was nothing more than a smoldering crater. Thanos had never been aiming for her; he'd been aiming for the van. Now there was no way to get the stones back to their original time.

Kara turned back to the titan, a wild, seething look in her eyes that may have scared him just a little.

"I wanted to just kill you," she growled in a low voice. "But now, now you're going to suffer. Now, you're going to have the flesh seared from your bones after I've broken all of them. Your body will be a monument to your travesties as I write the anguish of trillions in the language of literal pain and anguish across your skin!" she exclaimed, her voice raising as the anger and hate and pain and everything she'd felt over the last two years invaded her mind. "And I'm going to enjoy every moment of it!" she shouted.

Thanos stood and bolted for the stones, almost wrapping his hand around the gauntlet before Kara slammed into him, pushing him back before he was able to wrestle her off and throw her away, though with her mastery of her flight, she was back on him in an instant.

Her heat vision activated, burning the skin of his face as she grinned wickedly at him. Her fist impacted his armor so hard it sent a shockwave outward, throwing dust into the air and cracking the once thought unbreakable armor. A large fist walloped her in the stomach, knocking the wind out of her.

Was that a rib? That sounded like a rib. Possibly three of them. Oh, and she was bleeding from somewhere above her eye.

Kara could feel the power of the suit beginning to dwindle as she pressed a hand to her side. Thanos stood over the gauntlet as she snarled, her now blood covered face twisting into something unrecognizable from the once sunny Kara Danvers.

Thanos looked triumphant as he held the gauntlet in his hands before Carol was on him like a cat. She twisted as Thanos grabbed her by the ankle after she punched him the face. Thanos spat out a tooth as he threw Carol like a ragdoll. He put the gauntlet on, but Carol didn't know the meaning of the word 'quit.'

She slammed into his knee, forcing him to the ground as she grabbed the gauntlet, preventing Thanos from snapping again. Kara groaned as her last rib snapped back into place, right as Carol was sent flying by the power of the Power stone. With a furious yell, Kara unleashed her heat vision as she flew forward at Mach two, gripping around his middle section and slamming Thanos through several piles of rocks and building debris. She pushed upwards, intent on dragging the bastard into space and hurling him towards the sun. Nobody could survive that, not even him.

A massive blast of energy slammed into her back before she could get too high up, sending her rocketing back down to Earth. She laid on her back in a daze as Thanos came down beside her.

"You can't stop me," He said in proud voice. "I am inevitable!"

He was about to snap his fingers again when Tony threw himself at the titan, making one last desperate grasp for the gauntlet before he too was thrown aside.

Thanos basked in his glory for a moment before bringing down the gauntlet, allowing Kara for a brief moment to see-

Thanos snapped.

But nothing happened.

Kara heard Tony grunt. She looked to him with wide eyes as he held all six infinity stones.

"Tony," Kara groaned, crawling for him. "Don't!" she croaked. She got up on shaky feet before falling to one knee. "Whatever you're gonna do, don't! I can still kill him!" Her voice was raw and scratchy as she spoke. She saw Thanos coming out of his stupor at being bested by a human. He was walking over to where Tony knelt. "Oh no you don't!" she shouted, running over and tackling him to the ground.

"I got to, Kara. There's too many of his soldiers. We'll never be able to round em' all up," Tony panted, as he brought his fingers together.

"No!" Kara screamed as Thanos struggled out of her hold.

"Take care of Morgan and Pepper for me," Tony whispered as he closed his eyes.

And snapped his fingers.

A flash was all Kara saw right before she felt the bones in Thanos' neck break.

In another world, one similar to this one, one that didn't have Kara in it, Tony knelt alone; he made that decision alone. He was alone as he made the sacrifice to end Thanos' army for good

In this one, Tony made the sacrifice with one of his closest friends, a woman who he'd made the godmother of his only child, even if she hadn't known he'd done it (which some might say was a little inappropriate, but, he didn't really see a problem with it. Kara would love Morgan. Everyone loved Morgan).

Kara stood alone in the epicenter of the battlefield, the pile of dust at her feet scattering in the breeze. She panted as the pain finally hit her, and her powers finally went out.

The last of her energy gone, Kara fell to her knees. She heard a series of footsteps, panicked, almost, running towards her before she was caught in strong arms as she tilted forward to take a nosedive in the dirt.

"Keep your eyes open, my love," a warm voice whispered in her ear. Kara whimpered at the voice as tears began to form in her eyes. Wanda's concerned green filled her vision. "Keep your eyes open for me."

"Wanda?" Kara croaked.

"I'm here, my love," Wanda whispered, pulling Kara in close to her body.

"It hurt, Wanda," Kara whispered with a shuddering breath. "I'm sorry…I wasn't strong enough."

"No, Kara, you were strong, you beat him. He's gone," Wanda replied, running a hand through Kara's dirt caked hair. The blonde shook her head in Wanda's chest.

"No. I wasn't strong enough without you," she whimpered, her eyes sliding closed as she breathed in the dusty scent of her lover.

It was just like she remembered, though dulled by the scent of iron across the entire battlefield. She remembered the subtle vanilla and strawberry scent that she so loved. She wrapped her arms tight, but not enough to hurt, around Wanda as a loud sob escaped past her lips.

"Oh Rao, Wanda!" she sobbed, great heaving sobs that wracked her body.

"It's okay, my love," Wanda whispered, rubbing a hand up and down Kara's back. "It's okay, I'm right here," she continued, guiding her lovers head to her chest, right over her heart. "You were so brave, my love. So brave and so strong."

Kara sniffled pitifully, saying nothing as she focused on the strong cadence of Wanda's heartbeat.

"Come, my love, we should get off this field and find somewhere for you to rest, recharge, and clean up. You're bleeding, and your strength is nearly gone," Wanda said, gently coaxing Kara to her feet. "I like the new colors," she said with a small smile. Kara looked away ashamedly, not wanting to tell Wanda what they truly meant; the depths that she had sunken to.

"Hey," Wanda said, lightly putting her hand under Kara's chin and dragging her attention to where Kara was looking into Wanda's eyes. "I know, Kara, and there is nothing to be ashamed about. I may not know what exactly you did while I was…gone, but I know you did it with the best of intentions."

"But I-" a finger on her lips cut her off.

"None of that now. That can all be dealt with later. Right now, we need to take care of our friends, and you need to take care of yourself." Kara nodded, a jerky uneven nod, but a positive sign that she was at least not in danger of falling apart any time soon.

No, that would come later.

The cost of the battle, many would say, was not worth it. But to those who fought it, to those who knew what loss truly was, they would pay the price again and again.

For Kara Zor-El, she'd pay it over and over again if she had to. Hell, she'd gladly have given her own life (she did, it just didn't stick) if that's what it took.

For Pepper Potts, she paid a price one could only ever pay once, and it wasn't even her who had to pay it, not really. Tony paid it for everyone, so why did it feel like a part of Pepper died with him?

Clint? He had been ready to pay that price when Kara took the choice from him. Now he was glad she'd done it. Not that she'd died, that was shard to watch, but now he got to see his family again, his team back together and whole.

Natasha had wanted, no, needed to pay the price. If she could be the one to pay it, it might've made up for all the bad she'd done in her life (none of the previous avenger stuff counted in her eyes, that was just a job at that point).

Thor cleaned up the dead with the rest of his people, carrying the bodies of fallen warriors and ordinary people alike. During the snap, the Asgardians had dwindled to nearly an eighth of their original numbers. With the sacrifice of so many warriors in this hard won battle, he truly doubted that he would ever be a good king. Maybe he just wasn't meant to be one. He looked to his brother as they picked up the body of another warrior. He wandered when he and his brother had changed so much, what moment lead to this?

Kara stood at the lakeside house, alone, watching the little rose platform float out into the center of the lake. Her powers hadn't returned in full yet, but she'd heard Tony's holorecording. He must've known she'd either be there in person or listening in, because he'd left her a message as well, though not directly.

"-if you'd told me ten years ago that we weren't alone, I wouldn't have been surprised, but I mean, come on! The epic forces of darkness and light that have come into play, and those in between, for better or for worse, that's the reality that Morgan is gonna have to grow up in. But…I know she'll have a kickass mom to help her along, and a flying, laserbeam shooting, frostbreathing, super strong godmother to steer her on the right path-"

She'd stopped listening after that.

She didn't deserve to be around that kid, not one as innocent as pure as Morgan. She didn't know what Tony was thinking when he'd made her Morgan's godmother, but he was apparently out of his mind.

"Hey," a voice called. Kara turned, catching sight of red curls and green eyes.

"Hey," Kara parroted as Wanda wrapped a hand around her bicep.

"Talk to me," Wanda said, laying her head on Kara's shoulder. "What's going through that head of yours?"

Kara closed her eyes and pursed her lips. She swallowed hard, she looked anywhere but her fiancé. Anything to delay talking until she absolutely had to.

"What's going on in that beautiful head of yours," Wanda whispered, her very voice causing shivers down Kara's spine.

"I shouldn't be here, Wanda," Kara confessed, turning her head to look down into emerald pools. She caught the frown on the redheads face out of the corner of her eye.

"I know what you've done, Kara, and I do not judge you for it, no shame I can give you, nor anger that I would not first direct towards myself. I would do the same things if the positions were reversed," Wanda spoke gently, twining her fingers into Kara's. "What's really bothering you though?"

Kara couldn't help but give a bitter smirk. Even now, even though it had been two years for her, for Wanda it was just yesterday that they'd fought Thanos the first time. Of course Wanda would know how to read her like an open book. Kara could also read Wanda in turn; she knew her lover wouldn't let it go, even if she asked. "Tony made me Morgan's godmother," Kara whispered.

"Yes. Is it really so surprising?" Wanda parried.

"After leaving like I did? Like a coward in the night? Yes, it is surprising, and more than a little infuriating. I don't…I-" Kara struggled to find the words to describe what she was feeling about the situation. Frustrated felt too simple, angry may have been a tad dramatic. Or could it even be described in one simple word. "I-I've been nothing but anger, and hate, and pain for the last two years of my life, Wanda," Kara confessed in a low whisper, her eyes glued to the horizon, her ears honing in on millions of humans reuniting (and some coming back to…awkward situations) all over the planet. "I have personally killed hundreds of people. I don't regret it, because I truly believe that what I've done has been for the better but…I'm tainted, Wanda. I don't deserve to be around Morgan…and maybe…maybe you shouldn't even be around me."

The two stood there for a moment, listening to the crowd of people around them as they all talked, leaving Kara and Wanda in their own little bubble.

"That isn't true, Kara," Wanda said in a soft, caressing voice. "You are still the same woman I fell in love with. And though you have broken in places, leaving jagged edges and open wounds, it does not change how I see you. My strong, confident, kind, caring, beautiful fiancé. Your jagged pieces are sharp, my love, but they do not scare me," she whispered, leaning up on the tips of her toes before capturing Kara's lips in a brief but searing kiss. "I love you, Kara, and that has not changed."

Kara sniffled before nodding, knowing there was no changing Wanda's mind. "I love you too," she whispered in a strangled choke, tears swimming in her eyes before they fell softly from her face. Wanda pulled away after a moment.

"Come, you should meet her," she said, not specifying who 'her' was, but Kara could already guess.

"No. That's-I-that's not a good idea. How do you know that she'd even want to meet me?" Kara stammered, as Wanda pulled her along.

"Look at me, my love, focus on my heartbeat," Wanda commanded. "It'll be alright. Besides, I'm right here, and so is your sister and other friends, which you still have to introduce me to."

Wanda pulled Kara through the crowd of mourners, stopping briefly to speak to people who wanted to welcome her back, to hug Kara, and in Carol's case, offer a nod of respect.

"Pepper," Wanda called. "I found her."

Kara's eyes narrowed. Wanda had planned this.

"Kara," her name fell from Peppers lips before she was engulfed in the arms of another redhead. Kara stood still, mostly from shock, before she wrapped her own arms around Pepper, burying her head in the crook of the CEO's slender neck. "It's good to have you back."

"Pepper, I-" Kara started, but Pepper put a stop to it.

"Don't…it's okay," Pepper assured, drawing herself together and holding the pieces to keep from falling apart. "I had so many good years with Tony, even before we were married. I know he wouldn't want me to be sad about this."

"Yeah," Kara said, nodding soberly.

"I know you've never met her but…" Pepper started nervously. "But would you like to meet Morgan?"

"Should I? Pepper I-" Kara tried, but Wanda cut her off.

"She would like to," Wanda answered. Pepper gave a knowing smile before looking behind her, to where Happy was standing, and behind him, a little girl.

"Morgan? Can you come over here and say hi? This is your Aunt Kara," Pepper said. Immediately Morgan's eyes lit up as she raced over, almost about to slam into Kara's legs when the blonde moved slightly, preventing Morgan from hurting herself on the strong body.

"Aunt?" Kara asked in a small voice.

"She came up with it. Tony would talk about you a lot at night, told her stories about the adventures of Supergirl. When he told Morgan you were her godmother, she just went with Aunt and never looked back. You were always Aunt Kara to her," Pepper explained. Kara nodded, a little misty eyed, before she gently pried Morgan from around her legs.

"Hi," Kara said, getting down to sit on her haunches. Morgan stared at her with wide eyed wonderment. "I'm Kara. You must be Morgan?"

"Mm-hm! I'm five! Is it true you can fly really really fast?" Morgan asked excitedly. Kara gave the best smile she could muster.

"Yup. Last I measured was Mach ten. That's pretty fast by human standards."

"So you really are an alien!" Morgan exclaimed, her mouth falling open in shock. Kara gave a small laugh and nodded.

"Yup. I'm not even from this dimension though. So, not only am I an alien, I'm an interdimensional alien from a whole other world," Kara explained.

"Wow," Morgan whispered, obviously too shocked to say anything else. Her childlike wonderment though allowed her to move on from one subject to the next. "Mommy, can we go see Aunt Kara's Earth?" Kara froze, something that didn't go unnoticed by those present.

"Maybe someday," Pepper obliged, trying to steer Morgan from something that appeared to be an uncomfortable topic. Pepper knew Kara didn't want to talk about it, certainly not with Morgan. Thankfully she'd been warned by Alex ahead of time about how different Kara was. "For now, why don't we go see what we can wrangle up for lunch, huh pumpkin? What do you say?" Pepper asked, holding her hand out for Morgan to take. Her daughter took the offered hand, just barely reaching it, before the two started to head to the house. "Oh, you and your friends are welcome to stay in the tower," Pepper added. "And I'm sure you two would like to have a bed tonight to sleep on." With that, Pepper led her daughter into the lake house for some much-needed food.

"That sounds like a good idea," Wanda murmured. Kara nodded.

"Yeah. I could go for some food, maybe a nap," she agreed. "We'll go find Alex and the rest, wrangle em' up and send them to the tower."

Searching didn't take long, it never really did when you could pick out a specific heartbeat in a crowd, but they found Alex, Harley, Pamela, Rose, Helena, and Daisy all bunched together far away from everyone else. They'd all stayed far away from the funeral, they didn't really know Tony, and they didn't feel like intruding. Mostly they were there for emotional support.

"Pepper offered the tower for us to stay in," Kara said in leu of greeting.

"Sounds good. Anyone else coming with us?" Alex asked.

"Probably not. It's going to take some time to get everything together, clean up, figure out what was destroyed. We're not getting back to Earth-38 for a little bit though, I can tell you that. They took a lot of stuff from the portal generator in my fortress to here. Gotta rebuild the old one now," Kara explained.

"Wait a minute, if you had already built one, why did you need the Legends?" Daisy asked in realization. Kara sighed and ran a hand through her hair.

"I needed it because…because the one I built was unstable. I'm honestly lucky that it didn't kill me the moment I stepped through, or, you know, rip me into a million different multi-verses at the same time," she explained sheepishly. She hadn't been in a good place when she'd built that first version, but she hadn't cared if it killed her. By the dawning realization on everyone's faces, they'd come to the same conclusion.

"None of this talk right now, my love," Wanda jumped in, sensing her lovers growing distress and discomfort. "For now, let's go home."

"Yeah," Kara whispered, taking Wanda by the waist. The two flew off towards the tower, leaving everyone behind.

"Yeah, no, it's cool!" Alex shouted sarcastically. "We'll…get a cab, or something?"

AN: So, this is the final official chapter of 'Supergirl Lost,' and I just want to say it has been a fantastic journey. Thank you to everyone who read, to everyone who was patient with me and dealt with my absence from this story. I feel like a I owe a small explanation on that, and here it is. I burned myself out on Supergirl and I didn't know how I wanted to finish the story without it feeling too much like Endgame. I ultimately decided on what you've just read, and then focused on our two lovebirds reuniting.

Thank you all so much for the love and support. I can't tell you how much it all meant to me.

Who know, maybe I will do a sequel, but that'll be a long time coming, I think. I'm having fun writing other fanfictions right now.

Anyway, take care.
