Chapter 59
The visitation
03:00 Hours
Ryn sits alone in the conference room of the Naval Facility. A blank expression holds the young woman captive as she digests the information presented.
A rebellion? Ga'anda attacking a whole tribe?
Taking a breath, her relief over finding Cami on the road to recovery soon is overshadowed by a file read to her my Nicole. Shaking her head does not stop the gruesome thoughts.
On good authority, a well-trained group of Russian Special Operatives will attempt to kidnap as many of the participants associated in the Bristol Cove Project as possible.
Ryn squeezes her eyelids together to the point of pain as the details of the Top Secret report ring in her ear.
There is every possibility they will dispose of any of the participants they cannot ferret out of the country.
"Little Ted…Hope…"She bends forward over the oval conference table.
"Darling," the voice she needed to hear revives her stature.
"Ben, I don't know what to do."
"We are in this together. That sea monster will be finally destroyed when it comes near land." His arm circles slender shoulders.
"Nicole is on the phone now with the Joint Chiefs."
Ryn raises her head.
"Ben, many will die. My tribe is almost all gone. And," a quaking chest freezes her words.
"What is it? The Russians? They are going to be picked up as soon as they get within a mile of Bristol Cove. Or us." His cheek presses on hers.
"Ben, that male. The one Cami told us about."
"Yes?" He asks.
"When the leader, the female has caused dissension. If she is not fit to lead…" Ryn's staccato breathing brings him closer.
"Ben, you call our way of life, a matriarchy."
"Yes." He chuckles. "Women are the leaders, the bosses."
"Ben, if there is a need for change." Her lips are pressed tightly together. "Ben," as she inhales. "A male will lead a revolt. Only males can do this."
"I don't understand."
"Ben, if a strong male leads an uprising…even the females will follow him in the rebellion."
This aspect of political life from the deep keeps the marine biologist silent. A pensive expression crawls over his face.
"He will become the mate of the new Alpha, as you call it." A slight smile rises from her lips. "Like you call me." She adds.
Ben nods.
"After all of her followers are killed." The soft grin disappears.
"And all her family too."
A lone tear runs down the distraught woman's cheek,
An eerie silence blankets the conference room.
Maddie's bedroom.
Mirroring the angst taking place at the Naval Facility, Maddie is doing no better.
Tossing and turning in her bed, the cloudy vision cannot shield the terrible ordeal of imprisonment. The glaring stares of Tia to the physical pain from being bound seep through the woman's defense mechanism reigniting the horror.
"No!" An array of tightly woven braids whip her face. For a brief moment they cover a distraught expression giving her the appearance of one of Medusa's sisters.
"It can't be. Not her."
After the incredible conversation with Alice, she had decided to sleep at her father's home.
She is unaware of Ryn and Ben's meeting with Nicole.
The scent of seawater fills the bedroom.
"That smell." The same odor that occurred at Helen's.
"What…" She clutches the white bedsheet to her bare breasts.
A milky vision emerges from the distant corner of the room.
"Maddie." The whisper floats from the mist. "Maddie, listen…"
The words come from a figure surrounded by the haze.
"Who is…who is there?"
"You know who, Doctor Bishop." A hoarse chuckle sends a cold chill streaking down her spine.
"Why are you here? You are dead. Go away."
"Bitch!" The figure shouts. "I'm sorry." A foot strides from the cloud. It is Tia.
Standing in the nude, her taut skin looks unblemished, except for the slit running across her neck.
"What? You're sorry?" Maddie slides to the other side of the bed. She reaches for a sweatshirt on the night table.
"I can see why, my darling loved you as he did. You are very beautiful." Tia smiles with her words.
"What do you want. Is Joe with you?"
"Joe! You whore!" A thunderous roar from Tia sends the frightened young woman to the backwall.
"I must apologize again." Waving her hand, "I am here for Joe's sake."
Maddie controls her irregular breathing and speaks.
"I know I'm dreaming. So, I will not be afraid."
She swallows to moisten a dry throat.
"What do you mean…Joe's sake."
"It's been explained already from that funny looking old hag." Tia chuckles. "These Hybrids don't age well." Another snicker leaves her lips.
"Anyway, you are in danger." Tia takes a step toward Maddie.
The shaken young woman puts her back to the wall.
"Not scared?" Snorting several mild laughs, "Real danger. And it will develop soon."
Tia raises her hand and speaks.
"I know Joe must be thinking of me. Wherever his people go." A dim expression takes over Tia's face.
As Maddie squints she is surprised to see moistening eyelids on the apparent ghost.
"I think of him constantly. Being in the afterlife, well…in our afterlife, with the things I have done to my own people." Tia sighs. "Maddie, I don't have many friends where I am."
"Tia, just say what you need to say. What is the danger?" The words are softly spoken.
"You will realize tomorrow morning." A hint of a smile eases the troubled apparition's expression.
"Consider it a," the smile broadens. "A bittersweet message from me."
In a flash, Tia disappears.
With the same speed, Maddie wakes up.
"Oh, thank the stars. It was a dream." She leaves the bed, not noticing the Seahawk sweatshirt she is wearing.
As she steps one foot into the bathroom, she clutches her stomach. The girl drops to her knees and vomits into the bowl.
