Scorn

"You didn't have to invite him." The comment was muttered and irritated, as the speaker glanced across the room at the person in question. She made no effort to lower her voice.

Kagome sighed and shook her head. "I know that," she murmured, leaning over the cake with the frosting bag in hand. "But I wanted to. And you need to get used to having him around, Sango. He's a part of my life now, for better, or for worse."

Sango snorted derisively. "You could always purify him." Eyeing the demon from across the room, she scowled. "No body, no murder."

It was harder to keep the laugh to herself, but she managed. "An ambassador of demon and human relations shouldn't be so easily advocating the death of one," she pointed out, setting the frosting bag to the side and standing up straight. She studied the cake and nodded to herself. "Besides, I don't want to purify him, and I don't think the pups would let me do it anyway."

"There is that." Shaking her head, she looked over her friends shoulder and smiled a little. "Beautiful, per usual. How you expect us all to eat that is beyond me, when it looks so pretty. What does Kouga think?"

Blue eyes drifted to the other man in question, and she smiled a little. "The date was interesting. And I doubt he'd actually let me get away with killing Sesshoumaru, even if I wanted to." The look he sent her from across the room was the only agreement she would get.

"He doesn't deserve you." But she shrugged, and forced herself to think of other things. "How are your barriers?"

"Strong," answered the miko, absently reaching for the blue jeweled amulet she wore constantly now. "Very strong. I think I broke the one he set on my powers, or rather, I think the pups did. I haven't felt this powerful in years."

"Do you think the purity will affect the health of the babies?"

"I don't know." Shaking her head, Kagome sighed. "If it hasn't by now, maybe it won't. But the doctors are monitoring it on a weekly basis, so there's not much I can do about it at this point. I'm not going to worry about it unless they tell me I should."
