Walking in to the living room further he could see the full extent of Kate's decorating frenzy. The tree was covered in lights and decorations. She had added a second, smaller tree in the kitchen. It was the one she normally took on to the ship if they were on patrol at any point over the festive season. There was battery operated fairy lights strung along the walls all on different twinkle modes as well as tinsel garlands wound round the banister. The whole house looked like it had come under attack by a SWAT SAS team of elves dropping glitter grenades all over the place. she had Christmas songs playing over the radio.
"um what's going on Kate" he asked stepping towards her.
"I thought I would put the Christmas decorations up" she smiled
"i can see that. But I thought the tree didn't go up until the week before Christmas"
"i know but I needed cheering up" she forced a smile.
"and did it work?" he asked
"umm" she turned picking up another bauble out of the box "I think I just need..." she began looking for an empty space.
"Kate?" he questioned taking her hands, slowly pulling her away from the tree. "i think there is enough on there" he said softly
"I...I..." she stammered "no" she crumbled in to his arms
Holding her close he sighed softly. It was killing him to see her like this.
"its okay. We will get through this" he whispered
Pulling away she looked up in to his eyes. She really hoped he was right but right now she was struggling to believe it. Smith had had a week and half to spread all these lies about her to brass and as of yet she still had not got the chance to defend herself or give her version of events for whatever he was using to say she was disobeying orders
Brushing the tears out of her eyes and off her cheeks, she forced a smile "um where are the kids?" she asked looking around as he was supposed to have picked them up from school.
"With Nikki. She offered to have them for a sleep-over so we could talk"
"there is nothing to talk about" she sighed pulling away, flopping on the sofa "its pointless Brass are clearly going to believe Smith"
Sitting next to her he sighed softly. It was killing him to see her like this. Kate Mcgregor who never took no for a answer, who came up with the cruellest punishments to punish those beneath her who always stood up for what is just and right.
"there is every point Kate and I will be there with you" he said softly
Resting her head on his shoulder "how though he has planned this he will have an answer for anything I say"
"and we will have one back. You have done nothing wrong Kate. You did right by not leaving at 11 on Sunday"
Sitting in silence Kate sighed hearing her phone buzz with an email. Nervously she pulled it towards. Opening the email her eyes scanned the content. closing her eyes, she slid the phone back on the table.
"everything alright" Mike asked seeing her reaction to whatever she had just read
"yeah. It would seem what brass want to see me at 9 am tomorrow" she forced a smile looking at him.
"that's good isn't it" Mike smiled
"not necessarily it could just be to tell me I am losing my command and my commission"
"think positively Kate." he said squeezing her hand
"easy for you to say" she said with slight annoyance "it's not the career you have worked damn hard for on the line is it"
"Kate, I didn't mean it like..." he began
"whatever I am going for a long soak" she sighed heading upstairs
"Kate" he sighed watching as she walked up the stairs. "nice one Flynn" he cursed punching the arm of the sofa.
Sliding in to bed that evening Mike tried to wrap his arm around her waist but she shuffled out of reach lying as close to the edge of the bed as she could. Sighing he leaned right over kissing her softly on the top of her head
"night Kate" he whispered.
Waking early the following morning he reached over feeling her side of the bed was cold and empty and made up. Sitting up he switched the bedside lamp on. She had left a box on her pillow with a note attached in her handwriting
'sorry'
Putting the note to one side he opened the box. It contained her medals neatly pinned on to the cushion.
"shit Kate" he sighed throwing back the covers. He had to find her and fast. In a few hours she was supposed to be in front of Brass.
so sorry its a little short but i kind of forgot what i wanted to write. seriously all my ideas seem to enter my mind just as i am about to go to sleep. anyway hope this is okay and let me know.
