Chapter 61
A house full of doubts
Sitting on the beige sofa the tall dark skinned man's expression does not reflect the defiant front once shown Cami.
"Your name will be Brother." Ryn explains. "Xander told me you liked the idea of him calling you that."
"Yes, my Queen." Poised as if asked to sit at attention, he remains stiff. The size medium t-shirt strains against well-defined chest muscles. With each supposed anxious breath an outline of bulging biceps test the stitching around his shirtsleeves.
Hope's vision has not drifted from the imposing and handsome stranger.
"Cami has reported to me that you have gathered our people together to talk of revolt." Ryn stands in the middle of the room.
"No, my Queen. It is to," he grits his teeth together as he struggles for the correct word. "point out." He raises his finger to point at the three females. "My Queen, I want all to know." He swallows before continuing. "Much suffering…you gone…much suffering."
Brother had heard Xander speak to him in the patrol car. Coupled with a little over an hour watching television before this meeting, his grasp of English has been remarkable.
"Yes, it is true. My absence has been too long. It is good, you came." Ryn puts her hand on the left side of Brother's chest. "Males can see what females cannot."
Brother smiles as Ryn and Hope join him.
Cami shows a forced grin. She remains silent as Ryn explains the use of the Human Navy to kill Ga'anda.
The kitchen
As an apparent strategy session is being conducted in the living room, two old friends sit and drink a beer.
"I feel bad for that, Brother guy." Xander expresses through a smirk. "These damn mermaids are pretty intimidating."
"Why, he was trying to start a revolt against Ryn." Ben adds.
"Wow! I flipped when you first told me that. I mean," he sips from the bottle. "I mean that takes balls." Xander's fingers grasp around the white lettering as it peeks through his grip, Goose Island Bourbon Stout is barely visible.
"Well, that'll be history once the Navy takes over. That monster won't have a chance. Nicole said they will treat it like some submarine hunt. Or whatever they can do to use their toys."
Both men try to suppress the chuckles crawling up their throats. Both fail.
"That's not what I meant, buddy." Xander smirks at Ben.
"What do you mean?" Asks Ben. "It's natural for a people to worry over their leadership when tragedy happens." He decides to wet his lips with a swig. "That giant snake or eel or whatever inflicted some serious casualties."
"Wow, my main man. You can't see the truth when it's right in front of you." Comments Xander.
The pensive expression is not noticed by his friend. He maintains his train of thought.
"Come on, these damn mermaids. I mean the ones I've seen." Xander snorts a laugh. "They do what they want. Act like all high and mighty."
"Give me an example." Ben's words.
"Well, that Katrina. Remember her?" He flashes a grin. "Talk about being a domineering bitch." He chuckles. "They all treat the guys like damn…"
"They all act like that?" Asks Ben.
Xander's words screech to a halt. So does the humorous expression.
"Ben, I didn't mean anything." The embarrassed police officer sits up on the kitchen chair.
His friend remains silent.
"I wasn't talkin' about you and Ryn." Xander waves a large hand in the air. "Come on. I mean…" A few shallow breaths slink through the man's fumbling words. "It's just that kinda society. You told me. A mother…what?"
Ben breaks his silence.
"A Matriarchal Society…where men are at the bottom of the ladder."
"Yeah!" Shrugging his shoulders, he makes light of the situation. "Us guys are always dragging behind these damn women." Oblivious to Ben's expression, he continues.
"Damn, damn Nicole. You'd think we tied the knot." He stands, finishing the bottle of beer. "She even is picking out my clothes. Imagine!" He laughs as he puts the empty into the recyclable bin. "She threatened to throw out some of my sweaters. Said they're all have," taking time to remember her description.
"Pills," Ben tells him. "Pills."
"Yeah, those things."
Ben receives a call from his mother.
Xander uses this opportunity to contact Annie on his cell. She did a drive-by at the strip of beach Brother used. He just wants to make sure if any new citizen of the deep arrives, he'll be the first to know.
As a tall man with blond hair walks across the street from the home of Ryn and Ben, a woman sits in a black Elantra eyeing the singular pedestrian, he is unaware of her presence.
"Yes, Gregor is checking out the house." She talks through her blue-tooth connection attached to a petite looking ear.
"Yes, that's right." She agrees with the voice on the other end.
"We'll have to move quickly. These guys want to take or kill the targets and get home to their families or girlfriends as soon as possible."
"What was that?" She waits for the voice to repeat his statement. "No way. These guys are Spetsnaz." She shakes a head full of curly red hair. "If they get them first forget it. We can't outgun them." She stops to listen for a moment. "Are you kidding? They can rip your guys apart with their bare hands."
The voice keeps her interest as he gives her some new information.
"Fantastic." A smile covers her fair skin. "She's the weak link." Nodding her head.
"I see, that American agent kidnapped her. Him and his freak girlfriend."
As more data concerning their plan arrives via the Bluetooth, she answers.
"Ok, that's right. Afterall, we don't want them or even kill them if they cooperate."
She smirks into the rearview mirror. The young woman pauses to brush fiery red curls from her right eye,.
"We just want that money that Russian mermaid hid." She licks her lips. "It will be a simple swap." She inhales as a name is furnished from the voice.
"The location of the money. Or, this Maddie gets it."
