I'm Just Really Glad You're Here
Very SuperCat. Very PG. Very short.
I know I haven't updated this series in ages. I've posted a bunch of other stuff though if you haven't seen it
Kara was almost asleep, curled up under the heavy blanket she only used to keep warm when her powers were out. Her latest fight had been brutal, and she was exhausted and hurting, despite the bright smile and lies about being perfectly ok she'd offered Alex before her sister had reluctantly let her go. Kara had just wanted to get away from the sterile, militant environment of the DEO to relax and just sleep. She'd been genuinely scared to death during the fight and she'd been reminded once more of just how fragile she could actually become when her powers deserted her. She'd barely defeated her opponent and had dropped to her knees, immediately feeling the discomfort of the bruises spread liberally across her face and torso.
Then there was a knock on the door. Kara barely heard it and she raised her head from her pillow to listen. Normally, she would have just peered through the walls but… She heard it again, a sharp rap of knuckles and she groaned as she pushed back the covers and dragged herself out of the warmth to walk to the door and pull it open. "Alex, I'm fine…" she began exasperatedly but her voice broke and her eyes widened when she realized that it wasn't her sister coming to check up on her.
Cat smiled slightly and tilted her head. "The fact that you didn't know it was me means you're not fine, Supergirl," she said quietly. Then she stepped forward and gently held Kara's chin to tilt her head and examine her face. "Jesus, Kara," she added unhappily. "That's an impressive black eye."
The younger woman let out a breath as a soft smile rose to her lips. "No powers right now but it's ok. I'll live." Then her smile widened. "I didn't think you knew where I live," she said.
For a moment, her friend looked slightly sheepish, but she dropped her hand and shrugged lightly. "I looked it up in that HR tool we use," she admitted. Their eyes met for a long moment and Kara almost drowned in Cat's shimmering green.
"Coming in?" she asked softly as she stepped back with raised eyebrows.
Cat seemed to think about that for a moment, but then nodded. She stepped in and to the side as Kara closed the door and then headed for the kitchen to make coffee, fully expecting her friend to follow.
"You haven't asked me why I'm here. Especially this late," the older woman said hesitantly as she wandered into the kitchen and took a seat at the high top. She watched as Kara's hands slowed for a moment, then went back to their task.
"It doesn't matter," the hero replied. She turned her head to look back over her shoulder, a smile firmly on her face. "I'm just really glad you're here." Kara automatically prepared Cat's coffee the way she'd liked it when she was her assistant but chuckled as she set the mug in front of her. "Sorry… I just did what I used to do. I can make you another if you'd prefer something different?"
But Cat just smiled and pulled the mug closer. "It's perfect. Thank you."
Kara nodded and took the seat opposite her. "I know what I just said about not caring why you're here… but is something wrong, Cat?"
The older woman let out a breath and looked down. Kara immediately straightened in her seat. "Yes… Yes, something's wrong."
The hero slid her hand across the table, covering Cat's and caressing gently. "Talk to me."
Green eyes lifted. "I watched you get hurt on TV and be taken away by Alex and your team in a helicopter. It was terrifying and I didn't know if you'd want me to call your sister to make sure you were ok. So, I just… I came here not knowing if you'd be here…" She swallowed hard. "Or if you were even alive."
"Oh…" Kara said very softly, looking down. When she looked back up, her blue eyes were full of regret.
"I… I know I'm not family, or even someone who's special to you, but do you think that maybe you could let me know you're ok in the future? Just so I don't worry? I c-care about you… a lot."
"How…" Kara began, tone high and way too loud. She stopped and took a breath, gentling her voice. "How can you think you're not someone special to me, Cat?"
"Kara…" Cat chuckled with a little shake of her head.
"I'm serious," the younger woman replied.
It was Cat's turn to drown in Kara's eyes. "I… you left… I thought it was just…" She bit her bottom lip, insecurity crashing over her.
The hero slowly got up and rounded the table to take Cat's face between her hands. "You thought it was just sex," she said softly. "I'm so sorry. I thought that my leaving was what you wanted… because of Carter being home. That's on me."
The older woman's eyes lowered. "There are a hundred reasons why it should be just sex."
Kara nodded slowly but then a little smile quirked her lips and she suddenly felt braver than she ever had before, even with her powers fully intact. "Maybe if you name them all, I'll stop loving you." She threaded her fingers into Cat's hair. "But I doubt it." She leaned in to kiss her gently and felt Cat smile into it. The older woman drew her closer then to kiss her deeply. When they finally eased apart, Kara held out her hand in an invitation. "I'm basically an exhausted, walking bruise so I'm not in any condition for sex," she admitted. "But I'd really love you to stay, if you can."
This time there was no hesitation from Cat. She took Kara's hand and followed willingly. And as they snuggled together in the center of Kara's bed, Cat whispered softly. "I'm really glad I'm here too."
