Derek: you're right. I just don't want anything to happen to you or the baby.
Casey: neither do I.
Derek kisses the top of her head.
Dr. Sheffield (knocks on the door) may I come in?
Casey: yeah sure ( quickly wipes the tears falling down her cheeks)
Dr Sheffield: alright Casey if you're ready il going to put the monitor on you and then do the ultrasound.
Casey: ok. That's fine.
Dr Sheffield puts the strap around Caseys belly and hooks it up to the fetal heart monitor. *swoosh swoosh swoosh*
You hear that? Nice baby heart beat. (Derek smiles at Casey and he rubs her arm up and down). Ok Casey I know this next part isn't very pleasant but I just need you to try and relax ok.
Casey: ok
(The nurse helps set casey for the transvaginal ultrasound) once in position dr sheffield began the procedure and started the ultrasound.
Dr Sheffield: casey take a look at your baby. Nice and healthy. Everything looks good.
Heartbeat is nice and strong.
(Casey sits up and gets comfortable after Dr sheffield gets everything put away)
Dr:(washes her hands and walks back over to Caseys bed)your blood work i dont think i went over the results.
Casey: no i dont believe so.
Dr s: so you are definitely dehydrated. But we already started you on fluids when you got here. Um we did a cbc, cmp, hemoglobin, iron studies, A1c, and urine tests.
You are also anemic and it showed your blood sugar was also low. No infections which is a very good thing. Tonight they will do the EEG during your sleep study. Do you have any questions?
Casey: will I be able to go home tomorrow?
I have 6 children at home, one who is still nursing.
Dr Sheffield: if we don't find anything on the MRI or the sleep study and you dont have anymore extreme nausea and vomiting you should be able to go home tomorrow.
Casey: thank you doctor Sheffield.
Dr Sheffield: ill be back later to check on you before my shift ends. I'll see you tomorrow to go over test results.
Casey: thank you.
Derek: bye doctor Sheffield.
Later that evening casey had her EEG and sleep study. They put a rush on those results
Dr sheffield came by the next morning to talk to casey about being released and what the tests found
Dr sheffield: good morning Casey
Casey: morning doctor Sheffield
Dr sheffield: I hope you slept well
Casey: not really but that's to be expected right.
Dr sheffield: your test results came back from your, MRI,sleep study and EEG
Casey: did anything show up?
Dr: well your EEG was normal, your sleep study was normal. Your MRI did show a slight concussion but I dont think its anything to worry about. Your blood sugar was low and you're anemic which I believe is what caused you to pass out. Add being pregnant and its a triple combination working against you.
Casey: im going to be ok. And the baby is healthy and ok. That's all that matters to me.
Derek: are there any restrictions we need to know about? We have 6 very active kids.
Casey:(shoots Derek a look) seriously Derek, she said i was fine (she whispered in an annoyed tone)
Derek: Casey..
Dr sheffield: just take it easy, no heavy lifting, just make sure you're staying hydrated and that you are eating small frequent healthy snacks and meals to keep your sugar from bottoming out on you.
If you'll take your sugar 3 times a day and write it down that would be great too and keep a food diary. I know this is probably very overwhelming and seems like alot but this will be helpful in the long run. I'll get your discharge papers while the nurses take off all the monitors and ivs and you can go home to your babies.
Casey: thank you doctor Sheffield
