Entry 67

Something remarkable is happening.

I think… I think the Night Fury is beginning to trust me.

When I returned to the Cove this morning, I brought a fish for the dragon. I can't imagine one fish would be enough, but I also had no idea how the dragon would react, so it was all I brought.

For the first time… I was going to try and approach the Night Fury.

Unfortunately, my shield got stuck in a rock crevice at the entrance, so I had to make my way into the Cove with no defense. And, after I took a few steps in, the dragon climbed down from a rock, gazing warily at me. Slowly, I held out the fish, and it approached, seemingly just as apprehensive as I. And, when it got up to me and opened its mouth, I noticed something strange: its gums were empty. I commented on its apparent toothlessness, only for its sharp, pointy teeth to shoot out and snatch the fish from my hands. Immediately, it came closer, seemingly waiting for more, and I tripped backward, scooting up against a rock. What happened next… is gonna haunt my nightmares…

With effort, the Night Fury threw up half of the fish, right onto my lap. It sat back, looking at me expectantly. I realized what it was telling me to do… and I knew I had no choice. If I was ever going to get comfortable with this dragon, I had to appease its requests. So, I took a bite of the fish, immediately feeling sick. Never, never in my life have I tasted something so awful… fish mixed with the thick texture of the dragon's saliva and the sour taste of its stomach… I barely got it down. But it seemed like the dragon approved. I smiled at it, though inside I was dying, and… it mimicked my smile. A dopey, toothless grin… I've never seen anything like it.

Thinking this was my chance, I reached out… only for its teeth to reappear and it to growl, turning and gliding away. I followed it, noting how it burned itself a bed before laying down, and sat down nearby. Annoyed, the dragon covered its head with its tailfin. With its eyes covered, I tried again to touch it, but it must have sensed me, for it growled and left again. Still… it didn't once try to hurt me.

Is it possible? Is this dragon starting to trust me? I may have pushed my luck a bit, but I think if I give it a while, it will accept my touch. It's across the Cove now, sleeping upside down from a tree branch. Maybe I'll go give it a look, while it's asleep.

I went to go look at the dragon, and now… I can stop calling it "it". It's in fact a "he". It's funny, actually, because I never thought to refer to dragons as anything other than "it". As beasts, they seemed to have no identity… but as an animal, just like myself… I feel wrong calling him "it". It feels… disrespectful.

I watched the dragon sleep for a while, listening to his quiet snoring and dream induced movements. A couple times, he opened his mouth, and again, I saw no teeth. It's pure irony, in my eyes, that the supposed fiercest, evilest dragon of all has retractable teeth. In fact, it got me thinking… I want to refer to him by a name, rather than just "Night Fury". And the more I think about, the more it seems fitting to call him "Toothless". My own name has a cruel irony to it, so why shouldn't my dragon's?

…"my dragon"... what am I saying? He doesn't even trust me yet. But I think he just might, if I give him a little more time.

I'm going to stay here a while longer, in case he wakes up. No one will care if I'm missing, anyway… And if anything else happens, I'll be back.

Until next time…
